Automating Photoshop's Crop & Straighten Tool

Does anyone know of a way in which I can automate Photoshop's "Crop & Straighten" tool?
I don't think this is as simple as simply creating an Action or a Droplet to perform this task, because running the "Crop & Straighten" tool on an image results in the creation of multiple new images, all of which need to be saved out at some point (either before running the tool again on a subsequent image; or before ending up with hundreds of new/unsaved images open at one time within Photoshop)...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Ok, If you want to try the above method here is the script.
Run it when you have the layers created.
#target photoshop
if(documents.length){
var docPath = activeDocument.path;
var docName = activeDocument.name.slice(0,-4);
var Directory = decodeURI(docPath+'/Edited');
if(activeDocument.artLayers.length >1) CreateDirectory(Directory);
for(var a=0;a<activeDocument.artLayers.length;a++){
   activeDocument.activeLayer = activeDocument.artLayers[a];
   if(!activeDocument.activeLayer.isBackgroundLayer){
         dupLayer("#"+(a+1));
         activeDocument.trim(TrimType.TRANSPARENT);
         //comment/uncomment SaveJPEG or SaveTIFF
         //SaveJPEG(File(Directory+"/"+docName+activeDocument.name+".jpg"), 10);
         SaveTIFF(File(Directory+"/"+docName+activeDocument.name+".tif"));
         activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
         activeDocument = documents[0];
activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
function dupLayer(newName) {
    var desc111 = new ActionDescriptor();
        var ref52 = new ActionReference();
        ref52.putClass( charIDToTypeID('Dcmn') );
    desc111.putReference( charIDToTypeID('null'), ref52 );
    desc111.putString( charIDToTypeID('Nm  '), newName );
        var ref53 = new ActionReference();
        ref53.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('Lyr '), charIDToTypeID('Ordn'), charIDToTypeID('Trgt') );
    desc111.putReference( charIDToTypeID('Usng'), ref53 );
    executeAction( charIDToTypeID('Mk  '), desc111, DialogModes.NO );
function SaveJPEG(saveFile, jpegQuality){
jpgSaveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
jpgSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
jpgSaveOptions.formatOptions = FormatOptions.STANDARDBASELINE;
jpgSaveOptions.matte = MatteType.NONE;
jpgSaveOptions.quality = jpegQuality; //1-12
activeDocument.saveAs(saveFile, jpgSaveOptions, true,Extension.LOWERCASE);
function SaveTIFF(saveFile){
tiffSaveOptions = new TiffSaveOptions();
tiffSaveOptions.embedColorProfile = true;
tiffSaveOptions.alphaChannels = true;
tiffSaveOptions.imageCompression = TIFFEncoding.TIFFLZW;
activeDocument.saveAs(saveFile, tiffSaveOptions, true, Extension.LOWERCASE);
function CreateDirectory(Directory){
var PathFold = new Folder(Directory);
if (PathFold.exists == false) PathFold.create();

  • Crop & Straighten tool missing from Automate menu

    I'm using CS3, Extended
    The Crop & Straighten tool doesn't show up under the Automate menu.
    I've gone to Edit > Menus > Automate and it doesn't show up there either.
    I have quite a large amount of multiple scans that need to be cropped and separated.
    I never had this problem with CS2.
    The following are listed under the Automate menu:
    Batch
    PDF Create
    Create Droplet
    Pro Canvas (twice)
    Photo Tools Batch
    Photo Tools
    Conditional Mode Change
    Fit Image
    Merge to HDR
    Photo Merge
    I've tried opting for the no-show in the Edit > Menus thinking that there may be too many selections, but that didn't help. Also, like I said, Crop and Straighten doesn't show up there at all.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    imjohn

    Is it hidden behind the Slice tool?   Any tools with a little triangle in the bottom right corner, have move tools behind them.
    You could use the keyboard short cut 'c', but if the Crop tool is hidden, keep pressing Shift c until you see it.

  • Photoshop CC crop image size & resolution dialog box

    In previous versions of Photoshop the "R" button displays the Crop Image Size & Resolution dialog box.  Is this feature completely gone is CC? I can't find anything the even references this dialog box.  Anyone out there have this issue?

    In photoshop cc 2014, the size and resolution boxes will actually show on the tool options bar instead of a separate dialog window, by choosing W x H x Resolution from the drop-down menu.

  • Straighten tool isn't visible

    Up to recently my Photoshop Elements 11 straighten tool worked OK but now I can't see the line I am dragging.  Is there a way to make it more visible again?  I can see the start but not the line and sometimes I can see the X at the end but it is difficult.
    This seemed to become a problem after I used Image, rotate, straighten image.
    Now I am also having problem with the clone tool.  It acts more like a spot healing brush.
    What's the answer?  Pay customer support $39?  Reinstall the program?  I tried Chat and the person didn't know anything so he told me to call support and it would be free (which it isn't).

    I just did that write before I read this post.  I was going on here too delete this, but saw you answered it!  That's exactly what I did.  I've been watching tutorials and they show it as if it automatically shows up in Effect Controls...

  • Straighten tool horizon line

    I am having problems with the horizon line on the crop straighten tool. Sometimes I have one and sometimes not. Is there a setting I need to be aware of? I can't find one and nothing I find on line addresses this problem.

    They've moved it to the Crop tool.  There's a ''level'' button you can click in there, then set the horizon or whatever, then click Straighten and it will automatically rotate and crop, much as the straighten tool did.
    I think they should have just left a button that worked the way it did before in the Ruler Tool options too.  It's not evil to be able to do things multiple ways!
    I was told it may be possible to alter the script that drives that Ruler Tool button, so that maybe it could be made to work the way it did if a key is held down.
    But, after a while you learn to using the Crop Tool to do the rotate and crop, so I guess it's not so terribly bad.  Learning new things keeps us young!

  • Straighten tool in Photoshop Elements 12

    When I use the straighten tool in Photoshop Elements 12 and click on the "Grow and Shrink" and then check the "autofill" my picture is straightened but it is not autofilling.  Instead I see the black and white checkered background in the areas where it should have autofilled.  I do not know what I am doing wrong?

  • Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool

    In both Lightroom 4 and 5 my program constantly freezes while using the crop and straighten tool with horizontal images. Im running Lightroom on a Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac with 32 GB of memory with OS 10.8.4, this problem has gotten worse and worse to the point where the crop tool is unusable. Please help!

    Alright,
    no replies so far! Anyways, here's some more information which is leading me to the conclusion that the bug causing the effect described above is a combination of Apple's SMB implementation of Mavericks and the way Lightroom is actually using SMB network access:
    I did another trial by connecting a USB hard drive to the USB port of my router (Netgear). The connection is quite slow, but moving one of the folders in question (see my 1st post above) to the shared drive connected to the Router made Lightroom on my Windows machine to see the photos again, when I told Lightroom where to find the moved folder!
    Everything was working as expected, on the Windows machine again! Moving the folder back again to the Mac Mini fileshare was causing Lightroom on the PC to get blind again for the pictures trying to sync or import. However, accessing and modifying a photo was possible again, like it was before the trial. So it's only the sync and import function having a problem!
    I also did some trial in re-building ACLs and access rights on the file server with no luck. So there's got to be a functionality in sync and import of Lightroom which is using a certain SMB feature which is not supported by Apple's SMB implementation!
    Any thoughts or hints?
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop (cc) crop tool overly sharpens image after crop??

    I have just noticed something really interesting and quite annoying about the photoshop cc crop tool.
    It seems to slightly over sharpen an image after cropping. Does anyone know if there is a way to disable this?
    I did the same crop with the same image in CS4 and looks fine. It's pretty nasty and makes images look very digital.
    Has anyone else noticed this?
    Thanks, Dan

    This might have to do with a change that was made to the default resizing technique in Photoshop between CS4 and now.
    Try this: Open the Preferences dialog box, and in the General panel, change Image Interpolation to "Bicubic (best for smooth gradients)". Then run the same preset.
    If that change makes a Crop tool resize work like it did in CS4, then the reason you saw a change is because in more recent versions of Photoshop the default technique for resampling was changed to "Bicubic Automatic" which tries to pick the right algorithm based on whether you're resampling up or down. It applies to resizing in general (for example, transformations), and you're seeing it because a crop resulted in resampling.
    You can test various settings there to see which one is best for your work.

  • Straighten tool Adobe Camera Raw

    I am using CS4 and Photoshop is up to date.
    When I use the straighten tool in ACR it crashes approx 50% of the time.
    I am currently using Windows 7 but had the same problem with Vista.
    I have the scratchpad on my D drive and OpenGL is selected.
    My video card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS amd the PC is a dual core
    AMD 6000+ with 3Gb Ram
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
    If you open an image in camera raw, draw out the crop tool and then press the Esc key, what happens?
    I just messed with it further tonight.  It looks like it is working correctly with the 'Crop' tool.  However, it is not working correct with the Straighten tool.  I use the straighten tool, click enter to straighten the image.  If the image does not look correct to me, I click on the straighten tool again and hit the ESC key to revert it back to the original.  As soon as I hit the ESC key (while clicked on the straighten tool) it closes out of Adobe Camera RAW and goes back to Adobe Bridge.
    Which operating system are you using?
    I am using OS X 10.10.1 (Yosemite)
    Which version of camera raw are you using?
    I am on Adobe Camera RAW Ver. 6.7
    Both Photoshop and Bridge are CS5.1
    You can see the version listed at the top of the camera raw dialog when not in full screen mode.

  • Straighten tool repeatedly crashing ACR

    I havn't seen this issue reported anywhere else, but I can't get it to go away.
    I am using CS4 with everything updated. I shoot using a 5dmkii and canon 40d. I never had this problem in CS3
    I'll load up some raw files (doesn't seem to be affected by how many images I load at once) and go to use the straigten tool. Sometimes I'm good for a 20+ straigtening adjustments before it crashes, but then ususally once it crashes if I load them up again it will crash within one or two uses of the straightining tool.
    reseting tool preferences in photoshop and resting preferences in bridge will help it work for awhile, but inevitbly it will crash again while using this tool.
    No other tools have any problems, and if I don't use the straighten tool my computer can load 400+ 5dmkii raw images make adjustments and crops with no trouble.
    Anybody have any thoughts?

    I am also having this problem.  Here is the info of what I'm using:
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (Final Release - with all updates installed)
    HP Compaq 6710b
    Processor: Intel Core2Duo 2.1ghz
    Memory: 4GB Ram
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 11.0.1 (11.0.1x20090218 [20090218.r.523 2009/02/18:02:00:00 cutoff; r branch]) X64
    Bridge CS4 3.0.0.464
    Camera RAW 5.4
    Camera - Canon 40D shooting L JPG + RAW
    The staighten tool seems to be the cause of my Camera RAW (or Bridge?) crashing.  Like the previous poster mentioned, it is sporadic, but once it happens, it seems to stick each time I try.  It also doesn't seem to matter how many RAW files are open.  I tried going through the first few steps in an Adobe Bridge CS4 troubleshooting article, which included clearing the preference and cache, etc.  Also, it was mentioned that I should try without having other programs open. I tried this as well, and it didn't help.
    Any new insight into this issue?

  • Straighten tool reduces image sharpness

    Has anyone else found that when rotating JPEG images using the straighten tool, there is a loss in sharpness in the rotated image? I am using the straighten tool on a 100% zoomed image, so this isn't an artifact of cropping/resizing. Even at 100% zoom, any image that has been 'straightened' appears softer compared to the master (when I'm clicking 'M' to switch back and forth between master and straightened image).
    This does NOT have something to do with how Aperture simply DISPLAYS 'straightened' images in real time, because if you open the straightened image in an external editor (Photoshop), it STILL appears soft! However, if you perform the same rotation on the original image withing Photoshop, the image remains sharp!
    Aperture's rotation/straighten algorithm is seriously flawed?!

    This is true. Rotation DOES result in loss of sharpness because of interpolation, etc.
    HOWEVER, the loss in sharpness under Aperture is UNACCEPTABLE. The loss of sharpness under Adobe Photoshop, on the other hand, is ACCEPTABLE.
    Here is a self-explanatory image showing the UNACCEPTABLE loss of sharpness upon rotation of images under Aperture vs. Photoshop.
    http://web.mac.com/rishisanyal/iWeb/Homepage/Sharpness.jpg
    Apple, step it up. Or else I want my money back. Aperture, in my eyes, is no longer valid software for a 'professional photographer'.

  • CS5 Ruler and straighten tool

    I had been working on a large amount of photos using the ruler and straighten tool with no problems. Then, with no reason that I could determine, although the images were still being straightened, they were no longer being cropped. I would very much appreciate it if anyone has a solution for this. I know I can still crop manually with the crop tool but it's so much more time consuming.
    Thanks in advance.

    That's what would happen if you were holding down the Alt key
    when pressing the straighten button, so unless your holding the alt key or the alt key
    is stuck or being stolen by another program, resetting the photoshop cs5
    preferences would seem in order.
    Reset the photoshop preferences by holding down the Alt+Ctrl+Shift keys while starting
    photoshop and release the keys when a dialog appears asking to delete the
    photoshop settings file, click yes.

  • Ruler and straighten tool

    I had been using the ruler and straighten tool with out any problems when suddenly the straighten button stopped cropping the image. Anybody have any ideas why it might have stopped cropping or what i can do to rectify it?

    Interesting.
    That button seems to run something like an Automation Plug-in.  I say this because it actually creates two steps in the History:  Rotate Canvas and Crop.  Do you see both of these steps when it is done (even though it doesn't actually crop)?

  • Batch Crop & Straighten Photos...? Please, Help.

    I have several hundred photos that have been scanned and they all need to be cropped and straightened. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts at being able to create and run a action or script to batch this automated feature in Photoshop CS4. Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Thanks.
