  • How to find a lost file in Microsoft Office Autorecovery

Hi - This isn't really a question, though it would have been a couple of hours ago.
After saving all his files, closing them and closing all apps, my husband rebooted his Mac Pro (Lion).  When it restarted, his key Excel file wasn't there.  There was no trace of it in Finder, and no trace in Time Machine.  A search by Date Modified or File Name didn't show the file anywhere, either.  It was like it had been sucked out of the computer and the Time Machine hard drive completely.
Cheering as that thought is, there is another answer.
Microsoft Office has an Autorecovery function that saves files when, for example, there's a power failure.  These files are located on the home drive, in the Library (press Option when you click "GO" in the Finder command line at the top of the screen, otherwise Library is invisible).  In Library, there is a folder called Application Support.  In that folder are folders for a number of applications, one of which is Microsoft.  In the Microsoft folder, there is a folder called Office.  In that folder are a number of folders, one of which is Office 2011 AutoRecovery.  Click that, and any files saved by the autorecovery function will appear.
    Hierarchically:
         Finder
              Go
                   Library
                        Application Support
                             Microsoft
                                  Office
                                       Office 2011 AutoRecovery
The key thing to realize here is that a file which gets saved in Autorecovery DOES NOT appear in any searches by date modified, name of file, etc.  It's as if it is hidden completely after being saved.  When you turn the computer back on after a power failure, the file pops up and does say something about recovery, but if you're not looking for it, it's easy to miss.  As long as you have the file open and keep saving, there's no problem - it's just that when you close it, it seems to have disappeared completely!
I found this information on the Microsoft help pages under a slightly different heading:
    http://http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2650066#Method3
So for what it's worth, that's the story, and I hope it saves someone the sheer panic of not being able to find a file in Office.

I kept getting this error message when I was working in Word 2011 and searching for answers:
"This is not a valid file name. Try one or more of the following: Check the path to make sure it was typed correctly. Select a firle from the list of files and folders."
It started about 3 weeks ago. I was driving me bonkers. I found this posting that let me find the hieracy for the AutoRecovery files and reloacted them to Office 2011 >Office folder. I don't know how it got moved to another location (actually the file was in the trash when I found it. When I went to (Word>Preference>File Location>AutoRecovery) it showed the location of the file as being in the trash - Weird.  I moved the file to Office and clicked Modify and the AutoRecovery link in Location showed the change that the file was now in Office. It seems that all is well again-at least for now.
According to some sources I found, I thought I was going to have to reload Word 2011. I did not have to go through that hassel. Thanks so much for the response given by margb that helped me solve this annoying issue.

  • Autorecovery in Photoshop CS6

    I use PS CS6 on a Win7 64bit machine.
I noticed several users having issues with the autorecovery in PS. I had some too in the past, and just yesterday I had a PS crashing a couple of times too. The error seemed to be related to the facial recognizing .dll  Searching the forum, I had hoped that in the mean time this issue would have been solved, but I couldn't find any satisfying answers.
So I ran a bit of a test with a new file and noticed that in the file's history in bridge, it says the file is being autosaved to the correct folder. However, the PSAutorecovery folder is empty.
So is the one found under the User/AppData path.
I have full access to the folder (admin as well as user), it's safe to say that can't be the problem either.
When opening PS there is a big temp file on the D:/ drive (designated scratch drive). This file disappears when PS is closed. I have no clue if this interferes with the autosaving too.
    Hereafter two screenshots :
    1. Bridge history on the file as explained
    2. Empty PSAutorecover on D:/
After I did these, I deleted the PSAutoRecover file on D:/. I set the scratch disc to C:/, closed PS, reopened it and set the scratch disc back to D:/. The PSAutoRecover folder reapeared with today's date.
I started a file from scratch, added colour, text etc. Again the Bridge history claims to have saved to the D:/PSAutoRecover file, again the folder is empty.  I also watched my screen for like 10 minutes and no saving seems to be going on in the background whatsoever. But... when I save manually, suddenly the history in bridge is updated with a list of .psb files. Alas, still nothing shows in the recovery folder.
Am I missing something, because if I am, I really would like to know what that could be. Did some of the updates mess the system up ? Because I do remember it working a long long time ago, when I first had CS6. And then it stopped.

    @Curt
I think you misunderstand what I'm trying to say. In Photoshop preferences, you get a choice where you want your scratch drive to be. By default it would be the C: system drive. When your scratchfile is on C: the autorecover file is placed in the  user's AppData path (see screenshots below). Bridge seems to keep a history of what is happening to the file opened in Photoshop, hence that's what you see under the bridge history tab (which only appears while working on the file and having saved it manually at least once).
If I understand correctly, your secondary drive is called O:/  and in the preferences you point PS towards it to use as a scratch drive. Hence it's normal that you will not find a saved file under the AppData path on C:/ since you point PS to the O:/ drive as a scratchdrive. My second drive is D:/ but could as well be called X, Y or Z, that depends on how you set your drives up. But when I point PS to go and make the autosaves on D:/ it doesn't work, not for me in any case.
    @Noel
As I said I set the scratch file to C:/ again and this morning while working, I kept track of the changes. Again, the history in Bridge showed that the file was being saved,  to the User/AppData path.
    Screenshot with path highlighted :
When I opened the Autorecover file under that path, the autorecover file was indeed present :
I didn't think of terminating PS at that point to check if the autorecovery would work, but the fact that the file was there, makes me assume it would.
Next I returned the settings to D:/ , closed PS and restarted. And ... yup, Bridge history tells me it's being saved but the PSAutoRecover file is dead empty. Terminating PS via Task Panel didn't issue any recovery.

  • AutoRecovery Microsoft Word 2008 - no auto recovery files?

    Hi everyone,
Let me know if I'm missing something here...
I am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.
    Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks.

    jwaldron91 wrote:
I guess I was expecting more than four.
    Why? How many?
files I have recently written, and then not saved, have not autosaved, and the file I just lost is not recoving itself either.
As Microsoft tells you any chance it gets, AutoRecover is not a "substitute for regularly saving your files […]. Saving your files often is the best way to preserve your work." (That's from Word 2008 Help.)
An AutoRecovery file is deleted automatically when the respective Word file is opened and saved, or opened and closed without any changes. Barring bugs or other errors, the four files you found presumably correspond to four Word files which did not meet those conditions.
And thanks for this tip, but neither worked.
    Then restore from Time Machine.

  • CS6 is opening Autorecovery file even when program had been shut down properly

I have successfully saved my file, shut down Photoshop without incident, and yet upon opening  CS6 it starts opening the latest autorecovery file. I need to have autorecovery on for the work loss protection it provides, but it can get confusing to have an Autorecovery file open instead of the file I had meant to open. ( This is also happening on a colleague's computer.)
    I'm running Mac OS X version 10.8.3
    2x2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    CS6 Version 13.0.4
It's happened several times with a variety of files. They are all Grayscale layered PSB's, in the 1.5 - 3 GB range.

It should delete the file when PS is closed but computers don't always act rational.  Go into the autorecovery file location and delete file.  It should a a folder on your scratch disk.

  • Why does Office 2011 autorecovery work so crappy? Who is responsible?  Apple or Mircosoft?

    Hi all,
May be this is old question, but my Mac just have crushed and, as always, autorecovery has not saved any files.
There are no hidden files in Library directory as well.
I agree that my Windows notebook crushes much more often than Mac, but at Windows all files are always available after autorcovery.
So, I have very theoretical question -
Why does autorecovery work different at Mac and PC and why Mac Office does not have normal autorecovery instead of completely useless function?
Does this situation change in Yosimitee and will it change in the next Office?
    Vlad

That is a very good question. I've just learned to never trust it and save my work periodically as I go. Then I only lose what I haven't saved between that last save and a crash. Though I also can't remember the last time any Office app crashed on me.
There is a fairly recent topic around here that describes how to find the recovery file. Word, for whatever reason, won't open the file or even let you know it's there, but you can manually get it. I'll have to see if I can dig that topic up.
Edit: Ah! That didn't take long. Read through this topic.

  • Tiger Server Panther Clients Word v.X problem saving autorecovery

Dear All, We were running 10.3.9 server and clients untill this weekend when I updated to 10.4.3, now amungst the other problems we had that I fixed is one I cannot fix. Word keeps running into problems saving it's autorecovery information when using either 10.3.9 clients or 10.4.3 clients. We use remote home directories, bu they spend most of their time in our general "Shared" file. The exact wording of the first window is "Word cannot complete the operation because too many files are open." Then in parenthases(sp) is the name of the temp file (something like Word Work File A_2). Then the second window is "Saving AutoRecovery File is postponed for (and the file name). Any help would be apreciated.

Hi all, I've been suffering from the same issue and finally found something that works for me with Word v.X. (Server 10.4.4 (8G32)) YMMV.
Creating the .TemporaryItems didn't help, although it's being used by something, so maybe it's helping with some other issue.
Deleting Work preferences working, but only for the initial launch. Second time did not work.
Isolated the problem to the "Office Registration Cache X" file. With it deleted, Word launched each time. After some experimenting, I found that replacing it with a locked document file (in particular a .wpd file - maybe because the app isn't on the computer) of the same name kept it from creating a new file and Word will now open each time.
If any one want's to experiment to find out why that file is causing the problem (assuming the fix works for you), I'd be grateful. Otherwise I will be putting the replacement file in each users account (User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Registration Cache X). (Well each user that has the problem in the first place. As noted in other posts it's not a problem for everyone.)

  • Help!! I can't find Microsoft 2011 AutoRecovery File

I went to save my paper yesterday without looking at which folding it was going into and I saved it into "Microsoft 2011 AutoRecovery" and now I cannot find that file anywhere!!

Try looking in your Documents folder

  • Arrrghhh saved over the top - autorecovery??

Something I've not done for YEARS! But had an action that creats a duplicate file which was spitting the dummy on saving - so had to stop creating a dupe, and then forgot that I'd done that.  So I've just saved a low res flat version over the top of my high res layered work file.  Theres an several hours rectouching there I'd rather not do.  Now theres no autorecovery file in the usual location:
my question is is it possible the autorecovery file is still there on the disk and could be recovered?  Any other suggestions?

Please tell me you still have Photoshop with the recently saved file 'Open' with no further changes made. If that is the case, a simple 'Undo' will work!
If not, I doubt there is a way.
AFAIK, Autorecovery is recreated and reset everytime you manually 'save' the file.
Well, unless you had a Time Machine drive or some similar real-time backup enabled, I don't think there is a possibility to recover.
There are disk recovery tools that recover data for you - as when you save over a file you don't delete old data - you're just creating incremental data to your file partition. But, this is a 50:50 probability. Depends on what activity your disk has gone through since the last save and lot of other aspects.
    Sorry, tough luck.

  • Any way of doing autorecovery in Keynote?

Just lost 2.5 hours of work in Keynote after a crash. Is there any way of setting an autorecovery process going, e.g. every 5 minutes, as you can in Powerpoint?

Keynote is a shame. Enormous possibilities but bugs reported on the forum for months and absolutey nothing to help from Apple.Selling iPhone is probably the priority.
Presenting on a podium with a mac is becoming a nightmare. Powerpoint 2008 is as bad as 2004, takes minutes to open a large file so if it crashes during a lecture, you might as well go to the gents while is rebooting...
Keynote crashes or will not save modified lectures. Although some users have reported the issue with ms word spelling messages months ago, no patch has been issued. No answer is given to users so I can only see 2 options: Present with a PC or go back to V06 which was stable, at least with tiger.
Making an automatic recovery every 5mn should no be a big problem for Apple but Keynote users don't seem to be a priority for Apple. For a long time, we laughed at PC users presenting with powerpoint crashing or unable to hook up. Now I've experienced crashes in front of hundreds of people and that will not encourage them to buy a Mac.

  • Office 2011 AutoRecovery

My Macbook Air suggested me to save my Word document in "Office 2011 AutoRecovery".
By mistake I accepted. What do I now do to find it again?
    Thanks,

    Hi LousyFool
Thanks for taking the time to answer. The only thing in that folder, however, is called "Office 2011 Identities" which then allows me to go to "Main Identity". There is no such thing as "Office 2011 AutoRecovery".
    What can I do?

  • Disable autoRecovery in CS6

How can I completely disable autorecovery?
So far it has caused me more problems than simply saving my own backups frequently.
I can't find any way of doing this.

So what do you do if that doesnt work and you cant turn off any auto recovery in CS6. At work, I use the 32bit version of cs6 on a win XP machine. Now, not only can't i turn off CS6 but CS5.5 has started doing autorecovery.
