Autorun from CD

Hi all,
Thanks in advance for your help with this one. I know it is
quite an elementary problem but I just plain don't know the
answers.
I need to create a website that will be stored / run from a
CD rather than online and will be used to browse the contents of
the CD. My queries are:
1) How do I set the webpage to autoload by default so that
after the CD is inserted into the drive, the user is greeted by the
webpage rather than by the usual Windows' window? I assume it is a
script of some kind. Can anyone advise?
2) I've seen examples on CD/DVDs that autorun in a window
that doesn't look like a browser window because all the usual
browser menus at the top are omitted. (Although, I assume that it
is a browser window). Can anyone advise how that is done?
3) Are there likely to be problems with broken hyperlinks on
the CD? I assume I can create a local site directory and then
seamlessly transfer it to CD without compromising hyperlink
integrity. Is that right or should I expect problems with
hyperlinks / how do I resolve them if so?
Thanks again for your help with that.
D.

Google AutoRun Pro.
It consists of an .exe file and .inf file -- both of which
you add to the
DVD or CD at burn. When disk is inserted, autorun.exe
launches and opens
the page or application and file you specified in the .inf
file.

• Publisher not specified error during autorun from cd

Hello,
I am trying get rid of the publisher not specified when launching ADOBE PDF Doc from a CD. Can you please tell me how to get this option removed?
The autorun.inf is as follows
[AutoRun]
Open=c:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Acrord32.exe
shellexecute="Blah.pdf"
icon=SC_Reader.ico
label=blah blah..

I guess I had to try something here.
Apparently when you use the autorun.inf you have to call the actual Adobe Acrobat reader program instead of the PDF File itself. Now I am no longer getting the "Publisher Not Specified" error message but when I click on the Adobe program to run I am now getting "adobe reader core dll failed to load".
How can I call the Adobe Acrobat program from the source location on the hard drive. If you load the pdf file on the same CD you get the "publisher not specified" error. Now I am trying to figure out how to call any of the installed versions of Adobe Reader. I am currently running Adobe Reader X but some customers might have Version 8 or 9. Does anyone know how to call any version of Adobe Reader from the autorun.inf file?
I called Adobe Support but they didn't answer my question. So maybe they know how to fix a pretty standard error based on the Google Searches.
Thanks,
Calvin Grier, Jr.

• JRE autorun from a CD

I tried an experiment... I took the jre directory from the j2sdk
install area, added some java application classes, a windows bat
file (run script), autorun inf+exe files and burned a CD with them.
The goal was to try to auto run a java application from a CD that
was inserted into a Windows PC that didn't already have Java
installed (a requirement). I wanted to get the system to run the
JRE off of the CD itself...
The script set JAVA_HOME, PATH and CLASSPATH and then tried to run
the application. Everything starts up ok and then fails with the
error "Java has caused an error in JVM.DLL".
Any ideas on how to get this to work?
Thanks!
Craig.

Hi,
Im doing exactly the same thing. I have developed a software that needs jre and jmf (Java Media Framework) to run now i need to distribute it to clients who may not have java installed.
i tried to burn a cd with the jre and the jmf directory.
added a batch file within the bin folder of the j2sdk (where my classes are) and it read:
set JAVA_HOME= d:\j2sdk1.4.2_02
set CLASSPATH = d:\JMF21~1.1E\lib\sound.jar;d:\JMF21~1.1E\lib\jmf.jar;d:\JMF21~1.1E\lib;d:\java\classes;.
java MainClass
pause
but it wont work can you please tell me how and if you have managed to sort your problem.....
if you have any intersting website for this i would very much appreciate this.
if not can anyone point out where im going wrong.
Thank you in advance.

• How do you autorun a Flash Projector (Windows) from a USB drive?

I got a Windows Flash Projector (.exe) that I need to autorun from a USB drive. I just want the user to be able to plug in the USB drive to their machine and have it start running without any menus. I've been using the following with no luck:
[autorun]
open=KSF_USB_main.exe
The project is composed of a number of .swf files that load into the "KSF_USB_main.swf" file. There are also PDF and FLV links within some of the movies.
I have the "autorun.inf" file and all other files (including the .exe Projector file) on the USB drive. When I plug it in to a PC it brings up the "What Do You Want To Do?" window and doesn't autorun.
I've tried some 3rd party software that creates a menu file with no luck.
Any suggestions?

This feature may have been disabled in some versions of Windows and some types of USB drives:

• Skype 7.6 disabling autorun startup without signing in

With the new 7.6 skype you cannot disable autorun from the install options, you cannot disable autorun from msconfig, you cannot disable autorun unless you log in and disable. As a technician I install Skype on every machine I format, but I have it disabled to keep startup times slow. So now, it's either adding back the feature to disable autorun in the installer, or me not installing it altogether anymore, unless there's a way to disable it that I missed, that *does not involve signing in*.

• What software is best to use to create an interactive CD?

Hi
I'm creating an interactive cd rom. I have made several interactive CDs already using a really basic bit of software called Autoplay Menu Builder (made by a company called Linasoft) but it has several limitations.
Basically it needs to be an easy to navigate menu with thumbnails of images that users can click on to open and print however many images they like (one at a time). The images will be pdfs as I will distribute a copy of Adobe Reader on the CD (yes I do have a license to do so!)
The main problem I am having with my current software is that each menu program I create can only handle opening 10 or so pdfs and so I need to have lots of menus linking to one another in order to be able to open all of the pdf files on the cd (usually several hundred files). Each menu program is an .exe file with autorun feature. Each .exe file is named 'autorun.exe' by default and I cant change the name without encountering problems. Therefore the CD ends up containing 100s of .exe files with exactly the same name and users are having problems with their virus checker software thinking that the CD contains a trojan virus.
So I need to come up with a new way of making these CDs.
Things I need my interactive CD project to do...
* Autorun from disc without prompt from the user
* Run from disc only - I don't want the user to have to install anything or need an Internet connection to use the CD
* Not to have issues with the most commonly used anti virus software (I know this might be an impossible task)
* Have a customisable interface and buttons etc.
* Enable the user to quickly and easily open and print 100s of pdfs one at a time
* It needs to work on older home computers - and if possible to work on both mac and pc platforms
I would rather not have it open in an Internet browser window - but would go for this option if I could remove/disable the navigation bar and give it some kind of skin (so that users don't think that they have to be online to use the CD - I know that sounds daft but it's quite important to the project I am trying to create).
After reading around the forums I think that Director seems the logical way to go but thought it was worth asking for any advice on the matter before diving in at the deep end - I'm not familiar with Director or Flash... but always willing to learn something new!
Any advice or comments very much appreciated!
Thanks, Emma.

Director will definitely do what you want, but, you will have to program the functions you need yourself. If you have programming experience from another programming language other than lingo (directors programming language) it's relatively easy to get the hang of lingo, most later director versions also supports java script. In addition you're going to need a few plugins (called xtras in director) to get all the functionality you need, specifically BuddyAPI to be able to load or open the pdf's and get a list of the files on the cd, and if you don't want to use the adobe reader you will need Impressario to view and print the pdfs.
Also, there are probably quite a few director users that have done something similar already so if you need help you can go to www.director-online.com or http://www.directorforum.com/ and search the forums (or ask for help).

• Error: "Authorware Runtime has stopped working"

I'm trying to fix a problem our students are having with an
instructional CD that was made by Ivy Software. I'm getting an
error "Authorware Runtime has stopped working". I have spent a
considerable amount of time trying to diagnose and fix this
problem.
So far we have been unsuccessful getting it to work on a
Lenovo factory (OEM) HDD image. It works fine on all other PCs
running any OS and any version of IE. I’m providing some
links to documentation I found that may be of help with the
diagnosis, although none of these documents have solved the
problem. I have also noticed that the web installation, the first
link below, for the newest version of the Authorware Player errors
out on the Lenovo image but works on other PCs. I have put a call
into Adobe to get the distributable installer for this updated
version, as described in the 13295 "Technote", but I'm not holding
my breath. The Adobe support rep. said they would mail me an FTP
location to dl this installer, "if they can find it". :-P
It appears that there is no installation, the entire module
runs directly from the CD and does not install anything to the HDD.
The files on the CD utilize the Macormedia product called
Authorware which comes as both a development program and an add-in
for browsers. The error message we get when we autorun the CD is
"Authorware Runtime has stopped working". It isn't clear to me
exactally what it is running from the CD and or from the OS when
displaying this Macromedia Authorware software CD, since the Task
manager shows only "start.exe" running from the CD. Start.exe shows
it is Macromedia Authorware 7.02 in its file properties.

Update:
We fixed the problem. If we add the AW7.ini file the program
runs fine. We created a batch file to do this automatically. Here

@echo .

Normally, when the authorware exe file (start.exe) autoruns
from the Ivy CD it writes the AW7.ini file to the
"C:\Users\%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Authorware 7"
folder. On our systems that file does not get created. I've checked
the permissions on the parent directories, even created these
directories manually, and then copied the AW7.ini file to that
location but the program still fails.
Hope this helps someone else in the future.

• Can't install Oracle 9i ... why?

Hello,
I am trying to install Oracle that I downloaded from the official website (learning purpose). The problem is that, when I click on 'setup.exe' from disk1, it loads the CD for some seconds, then nothing more happens.
The Oracle version is 9i R2 (9.2.0.1.0). Total of 3 disks.
I burned each disk to CD-ROM.
(I also tried to copy the contents of disk1 to the HD and clicked 'setup.exe', but again, nothing happened).
My system:
Windows XP Professional, Sp1 with all the Windows Updates (US version).
Athlon XP 1800+, 512 RAM, 25gb free of disk space
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem where setup.exe was not working. I launched it and NOTHING happened. I have the following setup.
Windows 2000 Professional SP4
AMD Athlon 800 Mhz
768 MB RAM
Diamond FireGL 1000 (Permedia2) 8MB video card.
7.76 GB Free Hard disk space
Oracle 9i Client (CD)
I tried renaming symcjit.dll, tried running from CMD, tried all the suggestions I found on various forums to no avail.
What I found that works is to do the following:
Open a command (cmd.exe) prompt.
Clear out the "classpath" setting
set classpath=
Launch the autorun from the command prompt.
d:\>autorun\autorun.exe (assuming your Oracle CD is in the d:\ drive)
Oracle Universal Installer fired right up after that!
It looks like if you have garbage in your CLASSPATH, the OUI gets confused and can't run.

• Itunes 100 percent CPU

I am running Itunes and my CPU is running at 100% also when trying to go onto the iTunes Store it just says "accessing iTunes Store" and hangs there. There was an update available so I tried to update which resulted in getting an error when installing saying that MSVCR80.dll was missing. I then uninstalled itunes following all the steps removing :
Itunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
I downloaded the latest version of Itunes and installed it. I still have the same problem. I then tried using command prompt and netsh winsock reset. Restarting the computer but this hasn't helped either. I then tried Autoruns from Microsoft Website to see if there was any other programs using Winsock, but the only one that is showing is Bonjour.
Please can anyone help? I'm running out of ideas
I am running itunes on Windows XP SP3. I've only just started to get this problem and I haven't installed anything new for a while (not counting itunes-which I only updated to try and fix the problem)

Close your iTunes,
Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
(Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
netsh winsock reset
Hit "ENTER" key
Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if CPU problem is fixed now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

I am unable to connect with the iTunes store. ITunes keeps "accessing", but that can go on for an hour. No error messages. It just never connects. How can I overcome this?

The question for me becomes what motivation do I (Apple's customer) have to download Autoruns from Windows, open a compressed folder, try to determine which Winsock Provider is mine, check for updates and then run whatever it is I need to run to fix this. All these steps just so I can access the Itunes Store and buy from Apple. It would seem that Apple would find a fix on their side so their customers don't have to do this. Is anyone from Apple listening???

• Open pdf in ie on cd

I’m trying to make a quick cd for a portfolio
I have only 2 buttons, one opens a pdf and the other opens a

I used set nav bar image in the behaviors to create the

tried linking in fireworks.
I will be putting the file on cd with a autorun
from what I read the only way it works is if you upload to

Thanks for any help

Hi Deepak,
I'm afraid, it is not that easy. I read the forum beforehand and tried TabPocGroth, different versions of Crystal Reports, VCRuntime and Java.
Disabling enhenced security in IE, lowering the secZone settings didn't help either.
The ProcMon Log doesn't show anything special and the FusionLog gives me a hr=0x80070002 (unrecoverable error occurred during pre-download check)

• Multiple Qs- Boot camp, Force running a CD, VM Fusion

I will first apologize for what is going to be a fairly long post but would be grateful if you experts out there could help me out.
1. I just got a MAC after just getting using a PC after I was persuaded it would be an easier system to grapple with. I am trying to run a CD textbook that would usually autorun from my PC but is not running on my MAC. On a PC I would go to the Run function to make it run but I am not sure what to do in MAC. When I checked it out on "About this MAC" it said OS9 Drivers NO and S.M.A.R.T. status unsupported. What can I do as it is a major textbook of mine and I can't afford to buy another copy.
2.I got my machine 2 months before the Leopard was launched and have the Tiger OS. When I tried to install Office CD I had it would not install. I did a search and decided maybe I needed Bootcamp but all the links are taking me to the Leopard software. Will I still be able to get Bootcamp without buying Leopard, or can I install Office without it.
3. My friend persuaded to buy VWFusion but it turns out it is a partition software and I don't think I'll be savvy enough to go back and forth without harming my computer. Is it neccesary to install it if I can't get Boot Camp
As I said, very long post but I'll be grateful for answers to my Qs.

You want to run a PC application, you need to use a VM like Fusion or Parallels and a copy of XP or Vista, which should be able to handle most office apps.
If you want to run Windows natively, you have to partition one of your drives and install Windows. That can be done without BootCamp in order to install Vista. No idea if XP will work.
I'd try the VM approach first, don't activate until you've had a chance to get it working, whichever route you go, skip that for 30 days.

• How can I stop Adobe's updater?

No matter what I do, C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\AdobeUpdater.dll keeps on launching in the background.
Thank you,

This is one way to disable some of the Adobe software from running, though probably not the best or only way. It also shows you how to survey everything that's running and deal with it:
This assumes you're running Photoshop CS5:
1. Download the program Autoruns from Microsoft: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902
2. Run Autoruns and look in the Logon tab.
3. Uncheck the AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0 entry.
4. Look in the Services tab.
5. If you don't use Bridge, disable the SwitchBoard entry.
As you can see, Autoruns is a tool you can use to determine everything that's being run on your computer, and to disable items you don't want running.
Out of curiosity, what is the Adobe updater doing that you don't want?

• Photoshop CS5 Eating up my system

I'm sorry for using such a broad term but it's the first thing that popped in my head. I really can't figure out what went wrong... One day everything was fine now everything is just completely off the charts.. Naturally this is most likely a user (me) error... Here's what has happened up to this point. I found some old pictures and I was scanning them in and I didn't notice what PPI I had them at, when I realized it was taking entirely too long I looked back and the PPI was set at 2400... I stopped it as soon as I could, but sense that day it seems like Photoshop just wants to take up every resource available.... I usually use 2 scratch disks, my main C: drive and an alternate, I know the golden rule of not using the C: drive but I usually have plenty of space for Photoshop to work... I have sense then taken the scratch disk off of C and put it on my F drive completely... since then it has taken up almost 35-50 gigs of my F drive and it's still using 40-50 % of my physical memory on something as simple as cropping a small 10 megapixel photo... I've never had a problem like this in the past... That's why I find this so puzzling... I can't even finish the photo crop that I'm trying to do it seems like it would just end up taking forever... Any help would be apprciated, and thank you for your time... here's my specs...
Intel Core 2 Duo
Windows 7 64-bit Enterprise Edition
GeForce 9800 GS 512 MB
4GB RAM
Photoshop CS5 (I prefer running 32-bit because I run a lot of plugins and like I've said, none of that has changed)

Chris tells it like it is, and makes the (very valid) point that if you want to whiz through editing, having more resources in your computer is a good idea.
Photoshop uses up to the amount of memory you allow it. It does so since its memory management "takes over" from Windows, because Adobe has found it to be more efficient to do so. It may be that your choice of its limits is not the best one for your particular system.
In this particular case, you did something that caused Photoshop to allocate the max RAM, and I suspect it's just not running well with Photoshop using its max amount of memory and the type of tasks that your system or other apps are doing in the background - you have some choices:
1. Reconfigure Photoshop - e.g., reduce the max RAM you allow it to use - and hope that you can divide up the system resources better to avoid such thrashing.
2. Reconfigure your operating system to keep it from doing so much background stuff (e.g., disable indexing).
3. Do fewer things at the same time - e.g., don't run as many applications when you try to run Photoshop. Also review all the stuff you have installed and running with a tool like AutoRuns from SysInternals to make sure you haven't loaded it up with junkware.
4. Populate your computer with more resources - e.g., add another 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM. This is listed as item 4 here, but may well be the most important thing you can do to help with a situation like this.
5. Use the 64 bit version of Photoshop for large tasks.
You may think your computer is well-endowed, but in all seriousness today a 2 core laptop with 4 GB of RAM and an old 512 MB video card is a pretty mimimal PC for plowing through Photoshop work. I use an 8 core 16 GB system with a 1 GB video card, and there are still some things I wait on.

since then it has taken up almost 35-50 gigs of my F drive and it's still using 40-50 % of my physical memory on something as simple as cropping a small 10 megapixel photo... I've never had a problem like this in the past...
I believe your recollection is flawed. As you use it, Photoshop has always expanded its memory usage up to the max limit you give it.
And Photoshop is not supposed to permanently use up scratch space, but occasionally it can be seen to leave temporary files around... Check the root folder of your F: drive and see if there are any Photoshop Temp* files there. If so, and Photoshop is not running, you can delete them.
