AVCHD cameras CCD or CMOS

First thanks for take your time and read my question. So I'm not a Pro I edit for my self and my friends. That being said I film most of the time Action Sports (BMX) and I want to buy a camcorder under $800 I saw two panasonic camcorders both capture in AVCHD format but one is 3CCD and the other CMOS. So the question is CCD or CMOS witch is best for Action Sports? and If CMOS is ok with a single 1/6 CMOS or a 3MOS?
Thanks for your time.

Hi thanks both for the replys I agree with you guys the rolling shutter in the CMOS cameras can cause problems in a fast motion enviorment for waht I read. I have an old Panasonic with a Leica Dicomar lens and a 3CCD sensor and to me it looks good. So I will search the internet for a good and reliable store where to buy a Panasonic HDC-SD9 any store recomendations are welcome. Also if I can't find a reliable store on the internert where to buy the camera,
What in your is better a sigle CMOS chip or a 3MOS sensor or you think that for my needs I will not see the difference?
Again thanks guys

  • AVCHD camera suggestions?

We want to purchase some AVCHD cameras that will be used with FCP 6 and eventually FCPX when we upgrade. The cameras will be used by community college students to create basic footage that they will be able to ingest into FCP and edit, to be placed on YouTube, Vimeo, etc.
I think we would like to stay around $1,500 a camera (we will buy tripods, mics cases for each camera separately), though we are open to spending more if necessary. We would like the cameras to have at least one XLR port for a mic, and video quality and zoom are most important.
    1. Can anyone make any recommendations for AVCHD cameras?
    Thanks.

Okay I'll jump in.  I have been researching HD camcorders for months now, and I have a list of the top six contenders (in my opinion of course) here on my desk.  I'm suggesting to the boss to go with the HMC150 but it's still up in the air.  I'll share my list and maybe it will be of some help to you.
    1. JVC GY-HM100U. $2,395.00. Only camera that requires no transcoding to play with FCP.  10x zoom. 3-CCD 1/4", so no worries about the jello effect or rolling shutter like with CMOS sensors.  Comes with shotgun mic, but some say it's not as good as one you could buy separately. 2 SDHC slots.
    2. Sony AX2000. $3,495.00.  Best zoom available I've seen at 20x. 1/3" CMOS, so possible jello/rolling shutter issues.  No native progressive, no 720p60. Res and sharpness suppose to be really great. 2 SDHC/MS slots.
    3. Canon XA10. $1,999.00. Least expensive of the bunch, but suppose to be a great camera. 10x zoom. 64 GB internal memory plus 2 SDCH slots. 1/3" CMOS, but Canon says "with normal recording" shouldn't have issues.
    4. Panasonic HMC150. $2,995.00. 3-CCD 1/3".  13x zoom.  One of the most popular and widely acclaimed cameras. Wider lens than Sony but slightly lower res say some. If I get this one I think I'll get a Rode mic.
    5. Sony NX70u. $2,799.00.  1/2" CMOS. 10x zoom. 96 GB internal memory plus 2 MS/SDHC slots. I added this to my list when I saw it was certified rain and dust proof. Comes with shotgun mic.
    6. Canon XF100. $2,999.00.  Pretty much just like the XA10, but with 50Mbps 4:2:2 color sampling -- the only one I found in its class.  (Good for post work, effects, greenscreen, etc.)
Oh, on the cheaper end there is the Sony XR550 at around $1,200.  No ext. mic, no XLR input. Smaller sensor.  10x zoom.  240 GB internal memory. Might be better than what you currently have.  Might be perfect for you.
    FWIW...

  • Importing "24p Cinema" footage from Canon AVCHD camera ?

    Hi all,
I have bought a CANON HFS10 Vixia AVCHD camera, I`ve made some footage using the "24p cinema" mode.
When using media browser in PPCS5 and importing it, it still indicates (like in CS4) under "properties", that the footage is "29.97 fps", as CS5 is compatible with this camera specifically, shouldn`t CS5 indicate something like "24 cinema Canon mode" or so ?
It`s my understanding that the Canon camera produces a 24 fps footage "wrapped" in a 29.97 container; it`s also my understanding that, as CS4 is not compatible with this camera, it looked ONLY at the wrapper and said under properties "29.97 fps", that sounds reasonable for me.
But what about CS5 ? How do I know if it is really "seeing" the 24p footage wrapped in a 29.97 fps wrapper if it still says "29.97 fps" ? Will it perform the editing and exporting correctly even though ?
    Thank you very much,
    RK

I was wondering though.....shouldn`t I just NOT DO Anything ?
Well, that would be ideal... but you know how THAT goes
There`s an Adobe document at its web site talking specifically about the
Canon cameras, it mentions specifically my camera and the so-called "24p
    cinema" format.
Can you post a link? I'm just curious what it says. The biggest issue is that Canon actually has (at least) two different 24p "formats," and your camcorder records to the not-so-easy-to-deal-with version. It's what Canon deems "24pf," which means that it records 18 progressive frames and 12 interlaced frames, but it doesn't flag which are which, so programs that are not able to determine the pulldown cadence can't remove the necessary frames to create a true 24p clip. After Effects (and a number of other methods) can determine the cadence, but that's an extra step, obviously.
It says that I can use Media Browser to import the files and...that`s
all, it doesn`t go any further. The option Interpret footage -> remove
pulldown is greyed out for me (?)
Yeah, that makes sense, given the above. Do you have a really short clip you wouldn't mind uploading somewhere for a test? I can't find one anywhere online...
I wonder if I could just edit it normally (labelled as 29.97fps
though..) and export the timeline as 23.976p....?
Which results would I achieve ? I`m trying to avoid  spending some
    expensive blu-ray medias doing tests;
You could, technically speaking, but aesthetically, you'd be pretty displeased with the results. The export process isn't any smarter than the import process, so unless you do the necessary steps, you won't get a good, clean 24p encode.

  • Log and Transfer not working with Sony AVCHD camera

Hi, I have a new Sony AVCHD camera. The HDR-XR200 120GB hard drive model. It captures in 1920x1080i, and connects to Mac via USB.
FCP does not recognize the camera when I open the log and transfer window.
Can someone help me with seq setting and easy set up setting or other setting for it to work.
I am happy to import footage into FCP with AIC or prores 422. Just want to edit all the footage I have of my so's international soccer tournament held in Australia last week. I also have Final Cut Express on my Mac if that works better. This is very frustrating trying to get it to work.
    Cheers
    Bryan

I use a Panasonic AVCHD, which FCP doesn't recognise. Anyway I've spent months playing around because this little camera blows my Sony V1 out of the water in sheer quality.
Best thing is just get hold of a copy of Toast 10, you can then simply drag your .mts files into this and encode to whatever you want, I edit in pro res LT, but Toast will even encode it to HDV if you want to end up on tape(Even this result still blows the Sony HDV apart)
FCP is very fussy about even noticing the very existance of .mts files, so I wouldn't waste my time, scratching my head.
By the way, I use Firewire 800 drives, not USB 2 and also in the name of God BACK UP YOUR MTS FILES ON A NEW HARD DISC CALLED "BACKUP OF .MTS FILES!" LOL

  • How to add handles on .mov clips from an AVCHD camera

    Hi
I am trying to put transitions between the clips I have just logged and transferred from my AVCHD camera. They are imported as finite .mov files, without any in and out points. I know that I have to add handles to insert transitions. How do I change the in and out points? When I open the clip in the Viewer window and play with the little slider towards the bottom, it seems to change the overall length of the clip. Is this correct?
    thanks!
    Terri

Thanks. It does make them shorter. Next time I will do that from the start so there is less messing around on the timeline!

  • Better AVCHD camera than Canon Vixia HFS 200?

About 6 months ago, we got approval at our small newspaper to spend about $1,000 on a Final Cut 4.1-friendly camera. From looking around here for advice, we picked the Canon Vixia HFS 200. They are finally getting around to buying a camera (welcome to the world of beancounters). S the question: Is there a better, more current AVCHD model camera in that range we should consider?  This will be for shooting interviews and features and editing them on a MacBook Pro in Final Cut Express 4.1. Thanks,
    Doug

And, being a newbie, I am just getting up to speed on AVCHD cameras. So, you just log and transfer the footage from the Panasonic and FCE tranfers it into Apple Intermediate Codec and you are ready to edit wihtout having to render, right? Thanks for the help

  • FCE-4 ingestion set up for material from a Sony TG3E AVCHD camera?

    Hi
I have a Sony TG3E PAL AVCHD camera and want to cut my material with FCE4 on my intel macbook pro. How should I set up easy set up to ingest the material? There are 3 record settings I can use on the camera: HD FH (1920 x 1080), HD HQ and HD LP (1440 x 1080 and lowest quality). All are AVCHD.
    Do I ingest at:
HD - 25 fps- HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 or
    HD - 25 fps - AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1440 x 1080i50 or finally
    HD -25 fps - AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i50?
The camera generates 5.1 surround sound but says nothing about what KHz sampling rate the sound is.
    Many thanks for any help
    John

    Thank you.
In Easy set up I am confused about which format to click.
In the camera manual it says the video compression format is AVCHD HD, recording format AVCHD 1080i50 and video signal PAL.
Now that you have told me I can shoot on 1920X1080 which format should I choose:
apple intermediate codec (my vote) or PAL or HD?
I put 25fps in rate - is that correct?
    Many thanks.

  • AVCHD Camera/Import Questions

    1. Can video shot with a AVCHD camera be transferred to a mac using a high capacity card reader or does the camera have to be connected to the mac and imported using Log and Capture?
    2. I need to get a small AVCHD camera. I know they vary greatly in quality based on compression for the camera. Can anyone recommend anything specific that I should look for when buying one?
    Thanks!

Apple has just updated final cut pro x to use the AVCHD2 standard, and lets one import 60P without prior transcoding. It will take a while for them to also do the same for iMovie.
They didn't announce the change, one had to discover it, so I imagine we will have to keep an eagle eye on every update to iMovie.

  • AVCHD Cams and FC Studio 5?

I did a search on AVCHD cam workflow and the questions I see here deal with FCP 6. We are still on FC Studio 5, and are looking at some canons, like the HG21.
I am getting the idea that capturing footage from an AVCHD cam is different than with our old Mini DV cam, but I can't tell if it's possible, or even worth it to try...maybe we should look at simply getting a replacement Mini DV cam.
The weak economy isn't exactly helping matters, so upgrading all of our hardware and software isn't an option right now.
    Thank you for any thoughts/opinions.
    r

I had the same questions recently, and received some great info here. Hopefully, I can pass on what I learned.
I too have FCS (fcp 5). I am running on 10.5.5 with a G5 dual 2ghz tower. I recently picked up a canon HG 20. They can all work together well, but there are some things you need to be aware of.
As noted you will need a 3rd party converter such as toast 9. I picked up a copy for 49.99. Without this (or Votaic) you will need an intel machine and fcp 6.x. With that, you will still convert the avchd to apple pro RES.
Toast gives you many conversion options. I connected the hg20 via USB. After confirming the connection it mounted on the desktop as a USB drive. I copied the video files to my hd. I then had toast convert to DC pro 1080i. Converted files were about 3x size of original. Time wasn't bad. About 20 minutes for 15 gb of avchd if memory serves.
Resulting files imported into fcp5 without problem. Just make sure to set your fcp project sequence settings to same as the converted footage.
Fcp is a little slow for me with many filter in use, but that is to be expected working in that resolution on it machine.
    Hope this helps.

  • Transfer files from AVCHD camera

Can anyone tell me what is the best way move info off of my Sony AVCHD camera to my iMac?  I use FCE4 and the files are not normal .avi or .mpeg4 files.  If I copy them over to my hard drive, will FCE be able to import them later?

    Doesn't this require two things:
    1. a camcorder on the compatibility list for FCE4
    2. an intel core duo processor
I recently purchased a Sony HXR-NX5U and have not been able to import 1080/60i AVCHD to Apple Intermediate Codec when Easy Set Up is HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 and the preferences in Log and Transfer is set to any combination of Apple ProRes 422/ Apple Intermediate Codec Matrix Stereo/Plain Stereo.
I can see and play the files but when I add clips/selections to the queue I get the turning wheel then a red exclamation mark saying the there is no data in the file.
Am guessing the Sony HXR-NX5U is not fully compatible with FCE4.
Anyone have a good work around besides having to learn a different software program?

  • Does Final Cut Pro X import AC3 sound from an SONY AVCHD  Camera?

    Hi
    I have a Sony AVCHD camera HDR-XR200.
I have been using Vegas Platinum in a PC. Surround sound 5.1 is supported.
I purchased FCPX for its "64 bit processing. better use of cores and threads, and 5.1 sound (which iMovie does not support).
However, when I use FCPX to import from the camera, i only get stereo  channels.
I have set the properties to 5.1 sound.
Can anyone shed light on why this does not work?
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks Daniel for the reply and the URL.
I have sent the following to the Apple Feedback site.
"I have FCPX which claims to support AVCHD and Surround Sound AC3.
When I import toFCPX from my HDR-XR200 handicam, the audio is down mixed to stereo. I cannot get the 5.1 sound recorded in the camera to accompany the video.
Is this advertised feature missing, is this a bug or should I be doing something that is not immediately apparent to the application."
It seems that many of us who have great expectations for FCPX whould like some feedback from Apple.

  • What should I get, HDV or AVCHD camera.

I'm looking to get a new camera and I'm looking at most likely getting a Sony camera. I'm wondering which will work better and easier with Final Cut. I'm just stuck in deciding between a Hard disk drive camera that will record in AVCHD or one that records on mini DV tape in HDV. Im mainly looking for which has higher quality and greater ease of use.
    Thanks

What version of FCP are you running? AVCHD support is officially limited to FCP 6.0.1 and I'd be wary until the accepted wisdom is that this is a straightforward workflow with no quality loss.
You state that your primary objectives are output to the web as video podcast or to DVD. As such I believe you're wasting your time looking at both proposed formats.
AVCHD workflow is unproven IMHO, HDV is wasted on video podcast/web output and you'll struggle to find a Blu Ray burner to output BluRay DVDs and the red dye HD DVDs you can output will only work in 1 player.
HDV editing brings it's own difficulties as stated and suggesting the HVX-200 with its associated P2 cost is plainly ridiculous for your budget.
    I ain't impressed with 3 x 1/5" CCDs either - whatever the camera.
Get a 3 x 1/4.7" CCD Panasonic PV-GS500 (or GS400 if you can find one) or Sony DCR-HC96 for straightforward Standard Def workflow unless you want no inexpensive external monitoring or long render times (without converting to a more editing friendly codec via capture card = more expense).
There's life left in Standard Def and you'll still get decent quality if you're on a tight budget and wait till HDV/HD/AVCHD or whatever becomes cheaper/easier to work with in the future.
Camera technique is more important than format - don't forget, if you're shooting hi-def for large screen viewing (and it's pretty pointless if you aren't), focus is so much more critical for one thing - I'd much rather work with and watch stuff shot by someone who knows one end of their DVX100 from the other, rather than some eejit who knows nowt but is using an expensive all-singing, all-dancing Hi-Def offering.
    IMHO, of course.

  • How do download using 7 from AVCHD camera to computer?

    Hi,
Got Cannon VIXIA HG 20 camera and have installed Premiere Elements 7. Its a hard drive 60 GB camera I tried using GET Media, used the AVCHD button but the only drive that shows when I go to pull it off is the SDHC card. The hard disk drive does not show up to pull the video off of. When I use the ImageMixer3 softweare both drives show up.
Is there something I need to do to have the hard disk drive show up? tks

    > The more I read about AVCHD the more I realize it's a lemon design.
It's not as bad as it sounds. The design gives way cheaper cameras with very good quality images. For example, the Canon HF-10 (under $600) is a memory-based model with an SDHC slot. The downside is that the internal memory (15Gb) will hold only two hours at the highest resolution, but that's more than I had on some tape-based DV camcorders. With a certain class of SDHC card, you can extend that to whatever the card can hold (I think 32Gn is the largest SDHC card so far?). It's a small and light (soda can size) camera with no moving parts and nice extras like a mic-in plug.
The pain with PE7 is that it doesn't see the camera's built-in memory - only the SDHC card, even though the OS sees both. So what I have to do is use the supplied software (Pixela SE) to download the files to my PC, or use the camera menus to move the files from the internal memory to the SDHC card, from where PE7 can pull it (or I can yank the card froim the camera and stick it directly into my PC card reader).
I've used camcorders for almost 30 years (Panasonic VHS, JVC VHS-C, Sony Eight) and liked my last - a JVC mini-DV model, but realized when I shot my daughters wedding last year and saw it on the big screen that it was time to move up to a higher-def camera. I'm not wealthy, so I was looking closely at price v. performance and that seemed to fall squarely in the AVCHD camp. Personally, I like the Canon form and wase of use as a camcorder, and can only hope that it isn't obsolete before Adobe get their act together.

  • Why Doesn't Premiere Elements 12 Recognize My Sony AVCHD Camera?

This is my first attempt at using Premiere Elements 12.  Unfortunately, it is not recognizing my Sony HDR AVCHD format camera.  It uses a san disk.  I get a message "No supported devices detected".  It does find the jpg photos, though.
So I directly loaded the MTS files onto my iMac and created a DVD.  It looked pretty good, but not as good as playing the camera directly on a TV.  I found something on another Adobe site that indicated if there were problems with Premiere reading from the card that the files could be loaded to the hard drive.  It said "Be sure to copy the entire file structure of the card instead if just the clips".  I'm not sure what that means.  All I did was download the MTS files.
So I really have 2 questions here -
1 - why doesn't Premiere recognize my camera
2- Is there something on the san card I missed downloading that could improve the quality of the DVD being created?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply and your additional comments and results.
I think that we need to make distinctions between Quality (how good or bad the results looks or sounds to you) and Resolution (Frame Size, Display Size). Often the two can go side by side.
What you are seeing at the camera level is 1080i which is interlaced video at 1920 x 1080 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second. What you are seeing when you play back your finished DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc is based on 720 x 480 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second (if standard 4:3) and 720 x 480 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second accompanied by a 16:9 flag to stretch the 720 x 480 to 856 x 480 for display after encoding. Another factor is what the TV or computer player is doing to your interlaced video for viewing purposes - deinterlacing or not and with what method. Some TV's come with technology to enhance the DVD-VIDEO display. Most TVs larger than 32 to 42 in tend to show the differences between higher and lower resolution more readily.
Since you have interlaced video source, each frame has two fields, with either Upper or Lower Field First. Your source probably is interlaced video with Upper Field First. Consequently, in the project, you may have to adjust that to Lower Field First if your destination is DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc which is characterized by Field Order Lower Field First. Something to look into for the "better" aspects considerations.
Now if you decide to take your Timeline content to AVCHD format on DVD disc, note that the format of AVCHD format on DVD disc is different from that of the DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc (Instead of OpenDVD and VIDEO_TS Folder, you have the BDMV Folder). Your AVCHD on DVD disc will have resolution (Frame Size, Display Size) of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Under these circumstances, the capacity of the DVD disc can become a problem with larger projects. When you burn your Timeline content to AVCHD format on DVD disc, what is on the disc will be an 29.97 interlaced frames per second characterized by Upper Field First. So, if your interlaced source and the destination product both use Field Order Upper Field First, then no need for Field Options adjusts. However you do have one opportunity for a progressive frame rate for the AVCHD on DVD. It is not 29.97, rather 24. See Presets = H.264 1920 x 1080p NTSC Dolby in the AVCHD on DVD set up in Publish+Share/Disc AVCHD disc.
I have generated some very great looking DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc (standard and widescreen) and have been very pleased with the results and how my viewers received them. The thought is getting the best possible DVD-VIDEO on DVD and enjoying it without laboring on how it might have looked as Blu-ray or AVCHD if you do not have Blu-ray and do not have a player for AVCHD on DVD disc.
If you need clarification on any of the above, please let me know.
    Thanks.
