AVCHD to DVD: Export Options?

Hi
I'm currently editing a school show in FCE, shot on a multi-cam, AVCHD camcorder set-up. I'm editing the files in native format because a few copies on Blu-Ray will be needed. My problem is this; what export settings do I need to apply to the finished edit to optimise it for DVD burning, as 95% of required copies are on this format? I've tried the standard Export/Quicktime Movie option, and whereas I can burn lovely, pristine Blu-Ray copies from this file, (using Toast 10 Titanium), when I try to burn the file as a DVD, (using Toast's DVD burn option), the disc when viewed is of a pretty low quality and horribly interlaced on anything that moves even slightly. I'v tried customising the settings in Toast, specifically selecting "progressive" in the "Field Dominance" option, but the burn still looks crap!
I'm wondering whether my problem starts within Final Cut Express somewhere. If so, what is the optimum export setting with a view to creating decent-looking DVDs?
Thanks

The mismatch is probably the root cause of the problem. You are in a PAL country; if you shot 1080i50 then you should be using a matching Easy Setup in FCE, not 1080i60. I don't know how this would affect bluray, but it would cause issues for standard def.
Try this -
Make a backup copy of your FCE project file. +(Very important. Don't skip this. Always make a backup before experimenting.)+
Then, control-click your sequence in the FCE Browser. In the window that opens, click Settings. In the next window click Load Sequence Preset. Select AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50. This will change your sequence to 1080i50.
Then export to QT Movie; import into iDVD or Toast and burn a DVD. You may want to try this with a short video segment first just to see what the results may be.

  • Anyone got any good AVCHD FOR DVD Presets they can share for AME CC Latest Version when exporting from Premiere Pro CC Latest Version?

Just wondering if anyone has for download or can share some templates or settings that I can use to create a One Stop Encode that will suit both AVCHD HD DVD Disc and be good as a Computer MP4 File for PC and Android Mobile Playback and maybe even good enough for Full Bluray Mastering.
Currently I am using mostly HDV 50i Material with a bit of 1080 30p and Mobile phone type MP4 files thrown in.
I typically Encode to for DVD SD and HD BD. However I would like to be able to take advantage of putting some of the short HD Video to AVCHD DVD-R Discs.
I understand that the maximum bit rate is gonna be 18mbs? for AVCHD on DVD but am unsure what Profile settings I need to be compliant and as I say if create a good one MP4 that will be good for all formats
whether it be AVCHD DVD, Blu-ray Disc and good for YouTube uploading with possibility of compatibility with some of the Android Mobile Phones and Tablets.
    Thanks in Advance

Agreed about the roses but alas my next project always calls. Actually, I think what happens is I give each project SO much love that when it comes to exporting, I've run out of time.

Then it would not be a default...it would be an option and you already have that option.
Semantics aside, I would love to be able to have it at least default to whatever option was last chosen. Or, perhaps I shouldn't use the word default again...I'd love it to simply remember my preferred setting. That's all.

  • Best export options in QuickTime Pro to burn a dvd with?

I'm trying without luck to establish a workflow where i edit original content (combine image and sound, add credits) in QuickTime Pro then i need to burn the resulting movie to a dvd. This seems near to impossible.
I have finally figured out i need third party software to do more converting before it can be burned (i worry that every conversion robs a bit more quality - i had to do conversions initially to get my content from dvd given to me by the videographer or from my VHS-to-DVD converter into QT Pro, what a pain!). So i've got something called DVDFlick to convert into ISO image containing VOB structure, then use ImgBurn to actually burn the ISO image to cd, to get a playable dvd.
What i can't figure out is what is the proper format to export out of QT Pro? I tried DV/DVPRO and AVI both, but those resulted ultimately in audio skips on my commercial dvd players, as well as a movie that won't play the audio in Windows Media Player, but will in other DVD software players.
I was under the impression i needed to export as MPEG-2, but i can't find that anywhere in QT Pro export options. I notice there is an MPEG-2 add-on for Windows from Apple Store, but it only talks about playback from dvd, not going in the opposite direction like i am, where i want to save as MPEG-2 from Quicktime Pro. Please help make sense of all this
    -steve

Sorry, but you cannot export from QuickTime as MPEG-2. As you discovered, the MPEG-2 Playback Component is, as the name implies, for playback only. You'll need to work with the developer of your DVD creation software to determine why you're getting audio skips. Normally a DV export works well, but as they say, your mileage may vary. Any export will depend on the quality of the source media. You may need to look into different software for creating and burning your DVDs if DVDFlick continues to give you problems.

  • AVCHD to DVD revisited

I am shooting 1080i 29.97 AVCHD footage using the Sony NX5U.  I have followed the advice in this video for converting the footage to MPEG-2 for DVD authoring, but I'm not happy with the results:
    http://bellunevideo.com/tutvideo.php?tutid=10
Has anyone come up with a different way of going from AVCHD to DVD that works beter than this?
(I'm not criticizing Jeff Bellune's video.  I appreciate that he took the time to make the tutorial, and this may in fact be the best that can be done)
    J. D.

"Also, I'm curious - how were you viewing the MPEG2 DVD results when you decided the quality wasn't good enough?"
Funny you should ask this.  I was planning on waiting until tomorrow to respond to most of these suggestions because I am starting to wonder if it's my television that is the problem.  I am authoring a DVD with the Mpeg2 DVD file in Encore CS5, then burning the DVD and viewing it on a Viewsonic 20" widescreen TV from an upconverting DVD player with an HDMI cable (I've tried two different models of player).  I've already discovered that unless the sharpening on this TV is set to absolute minimum, the sharpening artifacts are very noticeable.  Even after this adjustment, I still see a thin halo around people with light-colored clothing against a dark background.  Also, the video is of a children's dance recital (yeah, I get the big time gigs, don't I), so there are a lot of artifacts when there is a lot of motion.  I've tried playing the footage straight from the camera to the TV via HDMI, and I don't see any of these problems.
I'm going to take my DVD home tonight and watch on a different widescreen TV.  I'll let you all know tomorrow if I see the same issues or not.
"If you want to try Pr again, make sure Use Maximum Render Quality is checked in the Export Settings dialog."
Interetsingly, the Premiere manual reads "Maximum Render Quality often makes highly compressed image formats, or those containing compression artifacts, look worse because of sharpening."  I've been using MRQ, but since AVCHD is a highly compressed format, maybe this shouldn't be used?  I tried converting a bit without MRQ checked, and it didn't seem to make much of a difference.

    Thanks for the follow up.
From what you wrote, you have Premiere Elements 10. Is that on Windows 7 64 bit or other. For now I will assume Windows 7 64 bit. If version 10 is on Windows 7 or 8 64 bit it is a 64 bit application running in the 64 bit system which makes it possible for full use of the 64 bit resources. That is good news especially when you are trying to take a large project to completion.
You set up the project preset in the new project dialog to match the properties of your source media. That setting directs the program to establish the right space in the Edit Mode Monitor for editing purposes. That project preset also directs the program as to what disc menu set (s, w, or hd) will be available to you in the disc menu section. The project preset also has more subtle effects on the project settings.
What is you plan for exporting your Timeline, export to file saved to the computer hard drive or burn to disc DVD or Blu-ray? Keep in mind that the setting for the project preset do not prohibit variations in the export choice under most conditions. If you post a description of your source media and how you would like to export it, I will offer some very specific guidelines on that.
If you do go the purchased book route, please try for one which is specific to your version 10. There has been a marked change in interface starting with version 11. Often principles remain the same from version to version, but features do not. And, I always write "It is very frustrating to be armed with principles when you cannot find a feature."
I suggest that you start with the Premiere Elements 10 Help PDF and then decide what next.

A lot of these links that say version 10, roll over to 11.
Steve Grisetti, the moderator of this forum, writes books on Premiere Elements if you are interested in the purchased book route.
Hope the information above is helpful. Above all do not hesitate to ask if you have questions on your Premiere Elements workflow or need clarification on anything written.

  • Where can I find explanations for all the export options?

[ Re-posting this from the iPhoto & iDVD branches ]
When I export a slideshow in iPhoto 9, choose 'Custom export' and then hit the 'Options' button, a dialog pops up with Video & Sounds options that can further be explored. In the Video section, I can click on the 'Settings' button, amongst others, to reveal lots of things that can be tweaked (Compressor Type, Motion, Data Rate & Compressor).
Where can I find help and explanations of what all these settings do, when to change them, why they should be changed, to what values and what effects these all have on the overall output?
Apple has a user manual for FCE4 on their web-site and I recognise some of these iPhoto slideshow export settings from similar dialog boxes from within FCE4. Does a user manual for iPhoto 9 exist also? I can't find it on Apple's web-site.
It has been suggested to me that these are all standard QT settings/options - hence the re-post to this forum.

It's always been up to each user to find all of the "hidden gems" in any OS software. Most of us experiment, test, try, fail and try again with all the options. Along the way we learn what works, what doesn't. I've played, poked and prodded QuickTime Pro for the last ten years and even wrote a "book" about it. I have over 200 bookmarks to resources and links that help me sort things out.
    Onto some answers:
    1. on your list is actually a three part question. Since you probably can't burn a true "HD" DVD we'll leave that part out.
You can easily "share" your iPhoto files with iDVD and burn in SD 16:9 format. You need to learn nothing about the compression options as iDVD will do all of the work. The Web based file formats (from the same source file) are an easy "trick" in QuickTime Pro.
QuickTime Pro includes an export option "Export for Web" that will make up to 4 "versions" of your source file and even write the html code for you to copy/paste into your Web pages. It creates up to 4 versions (iPhone, iPod, Desktop and cell phone) with just one export and writes html page code that can "read" your connected visitors "speed" to serve up just the right file for the device.
Your number 2 question is answered by your SD DVD media device. Can't make a sow's ear into a silk purse. But you could use QuickTime Pro export options to create a "true" HD file and display it on your HD TV. If your HD TV includes HDMI connections (and all should) you could either connect your camera directly to the TV (via cables) to display the "raw" video captures or use iTunes (free) application to export HD video to an appliance like Apple TV.
My "book" (a downloadable PDF) does include an explanation about nearly all of the QuickTime available codecs but it's probably not needed for your particular workflow. The built-in preset exports are all you probably need to use.
Compression type = file format (AVI, MP3, MOV, etc.).
Motion = frame rate allows you to change the source frame rate to meet the restrictions of your delivery media (nearly always adjusted to reduce file size for Web delivery). E.G source is 30 fps and delivery is 15 fps (reduces file size).
Key frames = "special" frames of the video that either "predict" or "optimize" for the delivery media format. The Export for Web feature of QuickTime Pro defaults should be all you need.
Quality slider = is "optional" but usually defaults to "medium". In most cases this is best left at the default setting.
Dimensions = file size dimensions. Well crafted, H.264 video codec QuickTime files will look very good when displayed at up to twice the file export dimension. This means you can display a Web based 640X480 file at "Full Screen" size (display resolution) without much degradation of video quality. Older codecs will not look as good when doubled in size.
Preserve Aspect ratio = just what it says. Widescreen source = widescreen display.
    De-interlace source = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinterlacing
Hope this helps you sort things out.
Data rate = the amount of compression (data limit)

  • Edited AVCHD video to export in AVCHD codec

I transfer AVCHD material from the Panasonic HDC-SD300 camcorder to Final Cut Express to edit the video. After editing in HD I would like to export the finished HD video (including audio) in AVCHD Codec to a SDHC card. The content of the SDHC card could be transfered with an AVCHD compatible SDHC tool (BD player with SDHC card reader or directly HD TV set with SDHC reader) to a HD TV set.
Any proposal, how to get the edited HD exported in AVCHD codec/format ?

    Hello skalicki,
thank you for your answer. May the difficulty is AIC. To transcode AIC to AVCHD is surely not the best way. As long as Apple is using AIC for FCE, it will be certainly not easy to get an AVCHD export option. I understand you have also an AVCHD camcorder. I think it will make sense to get after editing the option to export the video material in AVCHD. You could load the video material to a SDHC card and than you are able to transfer the AVCHD material via a SDHC reader (BD player with card slot or even directly a LCD TV set with card slot from Panasonic) to the HD TV set.
I am still hoping, somebody has a solution..............

  • No export option in QT10?

I've been working with QT7 Pro on a PC for years, and am used to using a host of export options that it comes bundled with, like the animation codec, being able to export a still, or to change the video size to whatever I wanted..
I've just bought a Mac and am shocked to find the only option available in QT10 is the 'save as' and what's there is really limited.
Have they completely hobbled Quicktime? Why? Or has it always been so on a Mac?
    Is there a workaround?

Snow Leopard includes QuickTime X (Applications folder). It has limited features compared to QuickTime Player Pro.
QuickTime Player will be found in the Applications/Utilities folder or you can install it from the Snow Leopard DVD. Only QuickTime Player can be upgraded to "Pro".

  • Best export option for Sound Designer

    Hi everyone,
I am working on a new short film and I am working with a Sound Designer and composer.  We want to create a 5.1 mix for the film (which I have never done before).  So I am trying to figure out what would be the best export option for him to work with to make his life easier.
Providing him with just a ProRes export won't help him match up to my cuts in the time line since he doesn't use FCP X.  So my thought is that we will have matching files and folder structure for both video and audio before I start editing.  But what I am not understanding is once I have a complete rough cut, how do I get him a cut list so that he can totally match up my cuts with the same audio files on his system?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

See this pic for an example of how my exports turn out:
    http://www.brettmichaelwiesman.com/temp/qtexport.jpg
First off, the titling style is not ideal for DV (or DVD). That is, your font should be a bit fatter (or, at least, bold) and perhaps 1-2 point sizes larger. (This is all because the DV codec makes titles look like s--t if the font size is small and narrow)
Also, for your LiveType files, make sure FCP is interpreting your alpha channel correctly. For every LiveType file placed in your timeline, select it, then press Command-9 to bring up the Item Properties dialog. In the column for Alpha, make sure it says it says Black. If, for instance, it reads Straight, Control-click [right-click] on Straight, then select Black from the contextual menu. You should notice your text 'popping out' a little more. You'll have to re-render, of course.
Also, in QuickTime Player, press Command-, (that's  + comma) to bring up QT's preferences. Make sure that the box for Use High Quality Video Setting when available is checked. (In order to get this working, it's probably best to set this, then restart QT - or close, then open, all movies). With the High Quality flag always used, your titling should always look better in QT player. (That is, there is no change made to your actual file, but at least when previewing, you'll get a better idea of things)
After you've made these changes, export as you were (Current Settings) and let us know if you see any improvements.

  • Limited Export Options?

    Hello,
I am trying to make a simple video for YouTube.
I saw a tutorial where the list of export options was a lot longer than my options.  There was an option for YouTube.  My list does not show that.
What types of actions cause the export list to become limited?  I am shot the video in full HD with 1920 x 1080 with a Canon HF20.  I then choose the preset AVCHD 1080p30.
    Thanks for your help,
    Robby

Thanks for the quick reply and sorry for the silly question.  I should have been able to figure that one out.

  • Chapters now working with all export options

iMovie '09 chapters used to work only with Share > iDVD. Don't know when it has been changed, but it appears that Apple has quietly improved the feature and chapters are now transfered with all export options (Apple presets and Export using Quicktime). I guess it happened with Snow Leopard.
So now it's possible to create higher quality DVDs with chapters. iDVD preset scales all videos to 960x540 (in case of 16:9) in interim file. Then iDVD has to scale it to correct NTSC or PAL size, and at least in case of PAL the output isn't very nice. There are aliasing artifacts, as vertically 540 lines have to be upscaled to 576 lines. Now it's possible with Export using Quicktime to output the video from iMovie in correct frame size with chapters and make DVDs with much better quality from that.
With SD source material you still lose a field, but from HD it's now easier to get higher quality DVDs. iMovie scales progressive video very well. From 720P content iMovie output in both 960x540 and 1024x576 sizes is really good, but iDVD can't scale the first one so well.

There is a bug. MacElk found it. His post is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2147921&tstart=0
My projects now export w. chapters intact. I file a bug report w. Apple.

  • NO DVD burn option in LR3.5!?

Ok, so using 64bit LR3 and without a DVD burn option. Anyone have a work around for this? I enjoy the convience of rating my photos and doing an immediate burn. Is there a fix in the near future here??

As far as I know, Lightroom has never been able to burn DVDs on 64-bit Windows. Evidently it's a driver problem. If you're on Windows you'll have to export to hard disk and use some other software to burn to DVD.

  • Pre12 – unable to burn AVCHD to DVD media

I'm using Pre 12 with Windows 8, editing AVCHD video, and want to burn AVCHD to DVD disk media (to play on a Blu-ray player).  However, whenever I try Pre12 shows “media not present” as status, despite having a blank DVD in the drive.  But, simply changing from AVCHD to DVD works fine.
Some background:  I’ve been a Premiere Elements user since V1 and after purchasing a HD camera several years ago I’ve burned many short HD videos on DVD media s using Pre 10 and 11 AVCHD format option.  However, that was before converting to a new computer and installing Pre12.
My new computer is a Dell XPS 8700, Win dows 8 64 bit, with an internal Blu-ray Combo Drive (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD). The drive shows in Windows Devices as “HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CH20N”.  It claims to read and write DVD media in either the plus or minus types.  I’ve been using TDK single side DVD + media. I've reported the problem to Dell Technical Support without success.
So, I don’t know if the problem is with my hardware, media, or a bug in Pre12, and would greatly appreciate advice.
    Thanks in advance

    1. Yes, HD or SD video will burn (in DVD format) to DVD media on either internal or external optical drive.  The reinstall of Pre 12.0 solved that problem.
    2. There was no change to results when attempting to burn AVCHD to DVD media.  The internal optical drive continues to show "media not present", while the external drive shows "ready"
    3. There was no change to results when burning to Blu-ray which continutes to operate correctly - the external drive shows "ready" (and burns are still successful).  Note that the internal drive can only write DVD media so isn't shown by Pre 12 for this task.
Below is revised table of results:

  • Problems in Limiting Export option in Web Analysis shortcut menu options

    Hi everyone,
i'm trying to limit the shortcut menù option in Web Analysis studio following the instructions in the WA 9.3.1 user guide: "Limiting Web Analysis Studio Shortcut Menu Options" page 293. Exactly i would hyde the Export to some users (an user with Viewer and Expoler permissions).
The problem is that the solution does not work.
    Resuming:
First, I have created the WAMenu.xml file, with restrictions for the roles: Viewer and Explorer (using the same tags of the Sample XML File in the guide)
Second, I have modified the WebAnalysis.properties file removing the # ahead this two lines:
    "WAStudioMenuControl= C:/Hyperion/Analyzer/conf/WAMenu.xml
    ModuleName=WebAnalysisStudio"
and modified the path with the correct location of the XML file.
At last, i have restart the services regarding Workspace and Web Analysis.
But, it does not work. The user can still see the export options in the shortcut menu..I don't understand what is wrong..
I really hope that someone can help me!!

    Hi Iain,
    thanks for answering.
Unfortunately it doesn't restrict neither in the workspace nor in the WA studio.
I made a lot of attempts, not only with export but also with other option, and there are no changes!!
Do you remember if you made the same steps descripted above, or there is something that i did not make (or made wrong)??
    Cheers,
