Avoiding pixelation with image resizing

i just redesigned my site (with a ton of help from many people on this forum--thank you nancy riki osgood
Sudarshan!!)
i have my thumbnails resizing (using max width: 100%) in a gallery but on a large browser window like my 32" monitor they get pixelated when they scale up, particularly the text..
is there  a way to start with a higher resolution image and display them at a smaller display size so when they scale up they stay crisp?

Hello mate, Welcome back!
Ideally, I wouldn't do a 100% width for your images on the site for enlarging them. No matter what plug-in you use, you'll definitely end up pixelating the image at least to some extent.
However, if you're definitely looking at achieving this, try this: http://archive.plugins.jquery.com/project/aeImageResize
And, start with a higher resolution of the image. The plug-in will scale it down proportionately depending on the screen dimension you're displaying it on, rather the DIV dimension that holds the image inside.
Also, it is to be noted that usage of multiple jQuery will lead to a performance issue on your site. You should keep this in mind.
One last thing: having said that you should start with a higher image resolution, your load time for the site will considerably increase as the plug-in only scales down the image visually, it doesn't load differently sized images!
If I were you, I'll keep the thumbnail images to zoom in to one optimal size and then provide a link inside my fancybox/ lightbox to a much fuller, bigger size image - if someone is interested in seeing them/ downloading the big size image.

  • PSE newbie frustrated, please help with image resizing

    Hi!
Tutorials aren't helping me, nor is trial and error. I just want to resize some photos I downloaded to my computer, then upload them to a website to use as my avatar or signature. There are specific pixel dimensions I must adhere to. I want to keep the photo in it's entirety, but when I resize it, it distorts a bit, looks fuzzy...
I can't figure out what the heck I am doing wrong. Some pictures turn out just fine and others look really bad. I know it can be done because I've seen the same pictures I'm trying to size, being used for the same thing I want to use them for, but theirs are clear, absolutely no distortion whatsoever. The pixel dimensions I have to work with are either 100x100, or 450 pixels wide by 90 pixels high.
I hope this made sense, I'm not sure how else to word it. Please forgive my ignorance, I've really been trying.
    Thank-you
    B

For an avatar it’s possibly best to crop to begin with so you get a true square.
Open the image and select the crop tool and change the aspect ratio to 1 x 1 or 5 x 5 then drag out a square and move the image around inside it or drag the bounding box borders until you have it looking as you want. Then click the green check mark.
On the top menu click Image > Resize > Image Size and in either the height or width box type 100 px (you only need to type the dimension once the other box will change to 100 automatically. Make sure you have the bottom three boxes checked:
    Scale Styles
    Constrain Proportions
    Resample Image
With all three checked set the bottom dropdown to Bicubic and then hit OK.
If you want to apply some sharpening select Enhance on the top menu and choose Unsharp Mask.
Make sure the Radius is no more than 1.5 and use the amount slider to get the image looking as you want it then save.

  • Importing causes pixelation and image resize doesn't work - Elements 13 Macbook Pro

As I import any photos, from any place, when I open them, they appear pixelated. I watched some tutorials and used image resize, which doesn't do anything but change the size, even if the resolution is turned up. I also saw something about preferences, which didn't do anything, all versions are up to date. What is the problem? Why will it never change?

    Hello Smis,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand you are having issues with your HP Monitor on your MAC. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Updating a Monitor Driver, where it states under the sub-heading Using HP monitors on a Mac "HP monitors are not supported in a Mac environment. However, newer Macs use graphics with VESA modes and can display to most HP LCD monitors. To do this, connect the monitor to the Mac while the Mac is off, and then turn on the MAC. The monitor should operate at 60Hz. The INF and software for the HP monitor are for Microsoft Windows and cannot be run in a standard MAC OS environment."
This being said all I can advise is that you check to see that the monitor is set to operat at 60Hz and contact Apple for assistance if that does not get your monitor displaying correctly.

  • [CS3][JS] Help with image resizing

I'm still a newbie of ID scripting.
I'm using js scripting in Indesign CS3 to make an auto-impaginator and I have a problem with images.
I charged my contents from an xml set of tables, that I put into a fixed textFrame of the master page.
Because of the table needs to fill multiple pages, I made a function that keep creating pages and link the textFrames so that the table continues in various pages.
In this whole process I have some images too, that I need to resize them to fill the cell, because now they pass the parent cell.
I found a method that looks at the bounds and resizes the image and the rectangle too, but it doesn't work always, because if a image is overflowing, it hasn't any bound and it fails, and this causes other problems in my process, so I would find another method.
    So:
Is there another way to resize an image on-the-way while importing it? Some xml attribute or preference?
Or some method that works also if the image is overflowing?

These forums are pointless. Adobe must believe that other users will cut the mustard. Absolutely a waste of effort for everyone. Adobe should PAY at least a junior developer involved in the projects to monitor and help with these posts. FLEX rules yeah and thousands more do scripting than develop plug ins...

  • Permissions issue with image resize

Ok I'm hoping someone may be able to help with this because it is really frustrating.
I realise this issue has already been posted in these forums however there was no solution offered that has rectified it for me.  I am getting an error when trying to display thumbnails        "Error converting image (create thumbnail). The "" folder has no write permissions".  And this error when trying to upload and resize images "Image upload error. Error resizing image: Error converting image (image resize). The "" folder has no write permissions. (IMG_RESIZE)". All folders on server have full read, write and execute permissions, so I am really confused why this happenning.  I have removed and updated the includes folder on the server with no joy.  I altered the tNG_custom.class.php, tNG_insert.class.php, tNG_update.class.php files to remove the tNG_fields line to just tNG as this was throwing errors with PHP5.3.  I also changed everything else per http://forums.adobe.com/message/2357443#2357443.
This is the tNG execution trace (why the tNGUNKNOWN??):-

Is it the preg_split() that is causing the issues here??
    Any Ideas?

    Hello BoarderLineLtd
I have noticed that on some servers when you upload the first image to the images folder using the ADDT image upload function the thumbnail directory that gets written to the images directory is written but the permissions are not set.
If you use an FTP program such as CuteFTP or WSFTP to login to your web site you can manually set the permissions for the thumbnail directory.
This should eliminate the permissions error.

  • Having problems with image resizing?

Since my upgrade to LR 3.2, I have detected a problem when resizing images at export.  When I select "long edge" at 1500 pixels, I'm getting vertical images at 1500 H x 1000 W (which is correct), but horizontals are exporting at 1500 H x 2250 W, so it's reading the "long edge" selection as "height". Same problem when selecting "short edge" also exporting as image height.

Works fine for me with 3.2 under both OS/X and win7.

  • Problem with image resize after canvas resize in CS6

In previous versions I have been able to resize the canvas and then resize the image.  For example resize the canvas to 250px x 250 px.  Then resize the image to the same.
Here is the process I am using:
Duplicate the layer and then hide it.
Resize the canvas (Image > Canvas Size) to 250px x 250 px.
Un-hide the layer and then resize the image (Image > Image Size).  When I go into Image>Image Size it says that the image is already 250px x 250px.  However if I try to transform the scale the image is the original size and not 250px x 250px
The reason for needing this is I resize image size (in bulk) and the canvas size using the batch process (file>automate>batch) and actions.   I loaded the actions file I used in previous versions, but that did not work correctly.  I then went in to do this manually and got the same results.
    Any ideas??

Please post the Action set *.atn file and name of the action in the set.
What you wrote seems like normal operation.
There is no reason to hide and unhide the layer.
When you change Canvas Size the only layer the may actually get changed is the "Background Layer" for the bankground layer does not suppoty tranparency so Pixels of some color will be added to the background layer if your increasing canvas size or Pixels will be cropped off the background layer if you decreasing canvas size.  Canvas Size = Document Size = Image size.  Canvas size change does not change the size of other layer.  Only their position over the canvas may change.  Layers other then the background layer can be any size. They can be the same size as the canvas size or they may be larger or smaler then the canvas size and they can have any aspect ratio and any shape.  As you saw when you ise free transform on your layer.

  • URGENT: Heap space problems with image resizing

I'm creating a Swing program, with an InternalFrame-type interface. One of the frames contains a .gif file background and then primitive G2D objects are drawn on top of it.

  • Working with images – Resizing, Add arrow & text boxes etc

I am using RH HTML for updating our Web application Help from
RoboHelp V3 to V6. It involves lot of images. I found the picture
quality good only using Word in the combination of
    RoboScreenCapture.
I need to confirm that the method and steps for capturing
images using Word & RoboScreenCapture will work reliably for
both WebHelp and Printable output in Word. Please review my
detailed steps as listed below and give me your suggestions.
Here are the detailed steps I took for each method:
    Starting with Resize & RoboScreenCapture:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Resize tool and resized it.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Resize tool
and by using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured
the region. The captured screen popped up in the RoboScreenCapture
    tool.
    4. I drew an arrow on the image and the text box and also
entered the text in the text box. Then I saved the image in the
    RoboScreenCapture.
    5. Opened up the RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
The image was not very clear looking in wysiwyg.
    In Paint:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Paint, stretch the image form
100% to 80%. The quality of the image reduced dramatically.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Paint and
by using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured the
region. The captured screen popped up in the RoboScreenCapture
    tool.
    4. I drew an arrow on the image and the text box and entered
the text in the text box. Then I saved the image in
    RoboScreenCapture.
    5. Opened up RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
The image was not very clear looking in wysiwyg.
    Finally, with Word:
    1. From our Web application I took the screenshot.
    2. I pasted the screenshot in Word, resized it. While in Word
I can draw an arrow on the image and the text box and entered the
    text in the text box.
    3. Opened the RoboScreenCapture, went back to the Word and by
using the Screen Capture Hot key - Cntrl+Shift+R, I captured the
region. The captured image popped up in the RoboScreenCapture tool.
Then I saved the image in RoboScreenCapture.
    4. Opened up RH Html. Opened up the Web Help project file
which I am updating and pasted an image in wysiwyg.
    Result
    Nice & Clear

There's a topic about this on my site that might interest
    you.
I recently tried the Microsoft Fax and Image viewer (the
freebie with XP) and reduced the window size dramatically. With a
photographic image it was very good. A quick test suggests it might
be good with text as well.

  • Can't scale effects with image resize in Photoshop CC, why?

I'm trying to resize an image, size it down from the 600ppi I work in
to a preview 300ppi size. But I can't get any option to resize the layer
effects to work. In that little cog, in the top right, there is a menu
item Scale Effects, but it is always greyed out and unselectable.
I've tried just scaling it in different ways, percentages, the actual
size rather then the ppi. No luck. Anyone know why?
I'm desperate to get this file (which has a tonne of layer comps in it) to print.
    Thanks!

Adobe hid the option in its new dialog making it inconvenient you have no idea of how it is currently set till you click on the gear to see the status of the check-mark.

  • Problem with image resizing. Lightroom 5.7.

Hi, i've got Lightroom 5.7 and have the following problem. When i export photos in the jpg format with custom image sizing 4600 x 3000, it produces 4500 x 3000. How can I fix it? Thank you.

    hi, dj_paige!
i tried and it worked. but then i created a new collection with different photos and also wanted to crop them 23x15. but when i chosed from the list of custom crops, first it was no available, so then i created again the same custom crop 23x15 and lightroom didn't create it, instead it chooses 6.5x10. it looks like that lightroom switches to the previous custom crop instead of using a new one. how can i fix it?
    thank you,

  • Images as Buttons and Image Resizing in mxml

Sorry for all the questions but I've run into a problem when trying to create buttons that are just an image in mxml. When I first tried this I couldn't find a way to get the border around the button to dissapear so it ended up looking like my image had an extra black border around it. Then someone here suggested I just set the buttonMode property of an mx:Image to true which ended up working fine to a point. The problem I'm having is that even if I make the tabEnabled property of the image (that I'm using as a button) true, I can't tab over to it. Is there a way to either get rid of the black borders of a button or to make it so I can tab over to an image I'm using as a button?
My second question has to do with image resizing. Lets say I have an image of a horizontal line that I want to put at the top of the mxml page, and I want it to extend the full length of the page, even after the user has resized the browser. Is there a way to do that? I've tried putting the width as 100% or giving the image a "left" and "right" value so that presumably it would be stretched to fit within those but nothing has worked so far. Is there no way to do this or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you for any help you guys can give.

Of course, sorry about that. So the following is a barebones example of how I currently implement buttons and images as buttons:
    <mx:Button id="facebookButton" icon="@Embed(source='image.png')" width="30"/>
    <mx:Image buttonMode="true" id="button" source="anotherimage.png" enabled="true" click="{foo()}"/>
And within the image I've tried making the tabFocusEnabled property true but to no avail.
The following is how I've tried stretching out an image across the whole page:
    <mx:Image source="yetanotherimage.png" width="100%" scaleContent="true"/>
    <mx:Image source="yetanotherimage.png" left="10" right="10" scaleContent="true"/>

  • Resizing pixel art video without affecting the pixels with blur.

    Hello everyone,
First I would like to mention that I did searched for an answer to my issue on the forum but only found a thread by Rowby Goren from Jan 4, 2010, who asked a similar pixel resize question regarding to still images in CS4. He was answered to use Photoshop for this kind of task. My issue on the other hand is for handling a video that can only be edited in Premiere. I'm using CS6. My issue is as follows:
I work a lot with pixel art animation in 320x240 resolution. Usually I'm making a 320x240 scene of background and characters and the final result should be a doubled sized. So each pixel is actually 2 times larger. Just like old adventure games from the good old days that most of us remember. It works great with old style games creation engines however when I want to make a video with my pixel art creation in Premiere, I couldn't achieve an exact and clean doubled pixel when resizing the source by 200%. It always gets blurry. Does anyone knows if Premiere has any switch off option for scalling blur?
I have created an image that describes the issue. It's just a simple pixel art image that I picked up on google search. I saved and uploaded it as PNG for best quality, I just hope it won't get compressed after the upload. Any assitance will be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Gal Shemesh

Thanks Jim, I am aware of the fact that it's a degraded image that doesn't have any antializing effect on it. And that's what I'm trying to achieve in Premiere, although it's currently impossible. Until now I'm doing exactly what you suggested, which is to double the size in Photoshop or other tool that doesn't affect any antializing on the image and then I import it into Premiere. However this also makes a problem when you want to move objects on the screen as the imported images which are doubled size, won't show well on the 1:1 pixel grid when you move them around the screen. So let's say each move on the X axis to the left or right (which represents a move by 1 pixel) should be moved twice in order to meet the doubled sized images pixel grid.
Take a look on the picture I created to see what I mean. I've duplicated the box image and I'm trying to position each box one next to another in a 3d space look. The left boxes is the original image of the 2 boxes, and the right image is the doubled sized image that was created outside of Premiere. Please note that I've the entire screenshot twice larger so you could see the difference. And please ignore the fact that there is no antializing on the right image as I made this simulation in Photoshop so the pixels will be clean to show the problem.
So, if you aware of how a pixel grid looks like, check the left image. The position of the boxes on each other is the way it should be as each pixel from each box keeps the relation of a 1:1 pixel grid. However on the right image I first doubled the original box image to prevent 'blurring' effect when scalling up in Premiere, put it on a 1:1 pixel canvas (where the image has 2:2 pixel grid by now) just like how it will be in Premiere, and tried to position the boxes one next to another. See that there's a confusion between the pixels on the 1:1 grid as they got merged one INTO another without saving the relation of a doubled pixel grid. Where if there was any option to work in doubled sized pixles in Premiere, it would have look like this:
So importing a doubled size images into Premiere like you suggested is way hard to keep tracking the moving objects in the scene, as you must remember to move them twice the times to each direction. Which means that if you want to move an object from one side of the screen to the other side, you'll have to do it frame by frame in a move of 2 pixels by frame, rather then positioning it in one place, make a keyframe, and then go to where the movement should end and place another keyframe.
Hope now my issue is clear.
    All the best,
    Gal Shemesh

  • I need an action/script for image resizing with a "special" attribute

Having a headache, nothing work so far the way I want it...
So here's the deal: I have a bunch of psd files and I need them saved as jpegs in a fixed size - 450x590px.
The filename of the jpeg should be the same as each psd and the images should be resized proportionate.
The psds have irregular sizes, some are tall, some are square, some are wide, etc.
I tried using the place function on a template, but that requires my input - choose what to place, then type the filename.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your input!

So have both Portrait and Landscape images with varying size. and want to create jpeg from them that are 450x590 pixels in size.  Can the have Portrait and Landscape orientations.  If they all must be Portraits 450px wide by 590px high  your landscape images composition will not fair well.  For cropping landscape image to portraits image normally crops away  to much image content.   Content aware scale may work somewhat better then cropping to portrait the introduced distortion may be acceptable.
If Portrait 450x590px and Landscape 590x450px is an acceptable solution.  I would go with a cropping solution for there will be no distortion and centered crop composition are usually acceptable.   It can also be done with a two step action used by an image processor script.  If you download my crafting action package. It has a plug-in script that can be recorded in an action to set a 45:59 centered aspect ratio selection which you follow with an Image Crop step.  You run the Image Processor  script have the action make the crop and the Image processor to resize the crop to fit into a 590x590px area.

This is a multi-dimensional question (he he).  I understand my problem is related to the original/developed WxH ratio.  If the pixel WxH I spec in Export-Image Resizing doesn't match that developed proportion, the results are not what I want.  In other words LR3 keeps the original/developed proportion and not what I want for that export.  Ok, so I just answered my own question - but..... please give me some library or export tips for doing what I want to do.
    What I do:
1 - I edit my images in RAW and like to keep them in their original proportions from my Canon camera as that is the proportion of HxW i use the most
2 - Later, if the image is really good (at least I like it), I may export it for different purposes and then may choose or require a different proportion.
3 - I would really like to not have to re-crop in Develop, then go back and Export, then go back to Develop and change it back to original.
Besides being tedious and time consuming, can anyone recommend a better way for me to do these "one off" exports (seems to happen more often lately) without screwing around in Develop and messing up my original work?
    Background:
One of the reasons I do this is to create wallpapers for computers, for various printing/framing proportions, and then for web site situations.  Windows XP (and I think the others) gets really slow if the program must re-size an image for wallpaper (why? go ask Mr. Gates... better get in line).  So to keep performance high, it is best to create the image in the exact pixel dimensions of the monitor.  This is always some weird number and not like anything else I do this for.  The other reason is for a quick, custom print job for someone who wants an odd matting setup for framing (don't ask).  This results in odd proportions.  Regarding the web.... well smooshing a pic into a column etc. etc...    Now while I am proud of my art and understand LR3 will expect me to re-crop to preserve my artistic brilliance, but really..... I would be happy with a proportional crop from the parallel sides of the offending dimension.
Also, when I spec a dimension, shouldn't the DPI gray out?  What am not understanding here?
One last request: please give me tips on solving for world peace... this one really bugs me.
    Thanx in advance!

    Bruce,
As you correctly noticed, the WxH ratio in export represents a canvas, into which the exported image is fit. Here are some illustrations on what the different settings mean:
For what you are trying to achieve, you have to crop the image to the correct dimensions before doing the export. If I had to do it, I would create virtual copies of the original image as the last step and give each virtual copy its own crop, then export the virtual copies.

The DPI resolution has no meaning for the size of the resulting image if you specify pixels in your export dimensions. But the resolution tag is written into the image, which might affect the way an image is printed, depending on the printing application.
But if you specify your export dimensions in inches or cm, the resolution together with the dimensions in inch/cm determine the size of the resulting image in pixels. I.e. if you specify 5x7" and 300DPI, your exported images size will be 1500x2100 pixels.
