[Awesome WM] Quickly openig console programms without opening terminal

I want to QUICKLY open console programms which are meant to be ran in terminal, for example - vim or ranger.
Right now to launch them, I do the following:
Mod4+Enter (opens terminal)
Type in command + Enter
I hate that I do have to open terminal. I want to take a shortcut. One possibility would be to:
Mod4+r (opens default launcher widget)
Type in "terminator -e ranger" (opens my terminator terminal whith "ranger" command executed)
Problem with this is that there's a lot of complicated typing in widget. What would be the best way to launch these programms quickly?

to start frequently used applications, console or otherwise, i prefer keyboard shortcuts, which you can define in your rc.lua file. another option woud be to use a menu: either the built-in right-click menu (can also be modified in rc.lua), or the new (since 3.4 or 3.5, not sure) menubar that pops up under the top panel when you hit a shortcut key. the last one i dont' like and keep disabled, so no personal experience with that. the other two options i use and modify often, due to changing applications & habits. if you're not familiar with lua, editing the config file (~/.config/awesome/rc.lua) will take some figuring out, but for this use-case at least it isn't difficult.

  • Any way to quickly add new event without opening or switching apps?

    Does anyone know of a way (or software hack) to allow me to quickly add a new event without having to either open iCal or make it the active application? Even something as simple as "add new event" to the right-click of the dockbar icon (ala "Compose new message" with Mail) would be a help. There's just so many times I want to quickly add something, but don't need to be bothered with the application taking up my screen, etc.
    Thanks.

    My MacBook get's hot really quick and then discharge's quickly without opening any program, please help.
    I have checked the cooling fan, and it's working, and I took it to an IT technician and he said my hardware is allright, so is it a problem from the OS it self??
    OS X(10.8.5)

    Restart with the Option key held down and the Mac OS X install disk inserted, provide the firmware password, click on the DVD, press the button with the straight arrow, access the firmware settings, disable the password, and use FireWire Target Disk mode. If you can't do that or it doesn't work, contact Apple.

  • How can I delete a message without opening an adjacent one?

    Before Yosemite you could delete a message from Mail.app without opening an adjacent message by holding option and clicking the garbage can.
    However, in Yosemite, there doesn't seem to be a way to delete a message without opening (and setting the message's status to "read") an adjacent message.
    I often don't have time to read all the messages in my Inbox so I'll quickly read some important ones and I'll leave the others as "unread" to get back to later in the day. Yosemite Mail doesn't seem to support this workflow anymore…
    Anyone know a workaround; short of manually setting a messages status back to "unread"?

    Ok, I'm answering my own question.  I made up a fake user name to get into my Palm Desktop and deleted profiles.  Then I went in with real user name.  All of my calendar entries were gone, but fortunately within the last month I had HotSynced and was able to HotSync again to get it back from my handheld.  I think I need a blackberry.  This stuff happens way too often.

  • Printing a document without opening it in Oracle Forms 10g

    Hi Friends,
    This is my first thread in this forum. Please any one give me a solution for my below request.
    We use oracle 10g and windows (any version). I want to print some files available in a folder without opening it (run in background) through oracle forms.
    My requirement is:
    A folder contains 10 files of word and excels documents. The client machine user (for example 3 clients’ machines who has different default printer configuration) has to trigger the print command to print the documents.
    * I have found Article "Java Bean to print a file to Local Printer" (http://forms.pjc.bean.over-blog.com/article-6621538.html). I do think it will help.
    * I have found a windows command prompt print concept.
    PRINT mytext.txt /D:LPT2
    Prints a text file.
    PRINT [D:device] [[drive:][path]filename[...]]
    /D:device specifies a print device.
    * The command prompt print syntax is used with webutil function as given below.
    CLIENT_HOST('cmd PRINT mytext.txt /D:LPT2);
    1) is the web util syntax only enough for this requirement?
    2) In this how to find the default printers in each client machines and use in the place of syntax?
    3) Or any other ways available for this requirement.
    I look forward solution for this question....!

    Hi Jeshra,
    Another option would be to find or write a Windows PowerShell script to print any file and then call that from CLIENT_HOST. Many file types, including Microsoft Office files, have a print operation registered with Windows so you can right-click on them in Windows Explorer and choose "Print." You should be able to exploit this ability with PowerShell.
    A quick Google search revealed this potential PowerShell solution:
    http://powershell.com/cs/blogs/karl-prosser/archive/2009/02/10/print_2D00_file_2D00_function.aspx
    PowerShell is installed by default only on Windows 7 so you would have to install it on older Windows clients.
    Hope that helps,
    Brian

  • Print without opening document

    So I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but I've tried doing a quick search and couldn't find anything. I would like to be able to print documents from Word, to jpg images without actually opening them to save time opening and closing them. Example in windows (although I can't stand) I'm able to right click and choose print from the drop down. How do I do that with Leopard, I have yet to figure that out.

    The printer proxies (or desktop printers) are also able to handle certain file types without opening the application. File types for some applications, such as TextEdit and Preview, are able to be printed without having the application launch. Other applications open and don't put up the print dialog, or open and do put up the print dialog. It depends on the file type and how the application responds to the request to print the document.
    Hope this helps.

  • Quick Look for files without extensions.

    I have many files without extensions that quick look does not recognize as text files. Bash shell scripts generally do not use an extension, for example (they are identified by their first line). Similarly I have a lot of text file notes w/o a ".txt" extensions.
    Is there any way to have quick look recognize these as text files? They currently have either text edit or textmate as their default "open with" app. I presume there is a config file of some sort for quick look that will let me default files with no extension to text files, but have not found it yet.

    Can't Quick Look for some text files

  • My father-in-law passed recently, leaving behind an unopened copy of CS 5.5 Master Collection Student and Teacher Edition for Macs.  How can I find out if he registered this software without opening it?

    Hello forum,
    Hopefully a simple question.  My father-in-law passed recently, leaving behind an unopened copy of CS 5.5 Master Collection Student and Teacher Edition for Macs.  How can I find out if he registered this software without opening it?  After finding out how much this software runs, I'd like to sell or return it if possible to give the money to my mother-in-law for funeral costs.
    Thank you,
    Bichonfreeze

    Mylenium,
    Thanks for the quick response!
    Thats a shame that it can't be used. Are you sure I couldn't donate the software to a university or school?  It just seems like a big waste for something so expensive.

  • CS5.5 query and programmes not opening any more

    I put CS5.5 InDesign onto a Mac yesterday (iMac 27” running 10.6.8) and
    since then machine has just about stopped working. Done lots of things like
    repair permissions (lots of times, including repair from original system
    disk as well). Most of the programmes just don’t open, they might bounce
    once and that’s it.  Yet strangely enough ID will open, but Acrobat wont
    open, lots like Safari, Entourage, Word wont open.
    Tried a new user and the same. Yet in Safe Mode it seems to open programmes
    happily. Have looked in Console (which only opens in safe mode!) and cant
    say I can see anything really obvious in errors. Have thrown away some
    preference files and for brief moment seemed to work. Have had a look on
    apple and adobe forums and cant see much obvious than always repair
    permissions again! Saw something about Suitcase Fusion which we use and auto
    activation of fonts which was turned off anyway.
    I have run out of ideas now and hoping someone might have a suggestion of
    something else to try, installed the same disk onto my iMac on 10.7.3 and
    its working fine

    Spent few more hours trying to fix my problem and it turned out
    to be some 'LaunchAgents' and LaunchDaemons' that were giving me the
    problems - not just sure which one it was as deleted a few but wasted much
    longer that I would have liked trying to fix it and read loads of forum
    messages that thankfully gave me the answers I needed !

  • Unbricking without opening

    Hi all, NEWS:I have setup a github for my experiments.So you can find all my information here:https://github.com/utessel/mycloud  Most important:This posting is about how to unbrick a MyCloud without opening it.At least: Some important steps to do this... Disclaimer:1.) It is not a complete walkthrough how to do this.2.) I cannot (and will not) explain or help how to unbrick your device.3.) I hope someone else will clean this up, improve it and create something even more useful out of it:I just wrote down the steps I did, (ok, with a little bit of cleanup already)If there is a wiki or something like that for this: feel free to use my information.4.) I will not provide any binaries I created for myself. My background:I bought a broken MyCloud (in fact to have a second one, just to be able try this) and started to "unbrick" that, and I was trying it the hard way: Not connecting the disk to anything else.So in fact my MyCloud was open: This allowed me to use a serial console to watch what is happening. But that is finally not required at all. The final result works like this:1. you need a working DHCP server that sends a TFTP Server address: I use dnsmasq for this. (don't ask me how to configure that!)2. Setup a tftp folder with two files "startup.sh" and "uImage" (more about these files below)3. Execute (my) rawping command to send the magic ICMP packet (you find it in my other posting about the serial interface)4. Power your MyCloud device (I expect you already have a working LAN connection).5. Wait a bit and you can connect via telnet to your device and you can start to repair it. So how does this work:After power on the device starts the first and the second barebox loader.The second barebox sees the "magic packet" and now tries to download startup.sh from the tftp server:Mine looks like this: startup.shecho Will boot via tftp
    timeout -c 2
    addpart /dev/mem 8M@0x3008000(uImage)
    tftp uImage /dev/mem.uImage
    bootargs="console=ttyS0,115200n8, "
    bootargs="$bootargs mac_addr=$eth0.ethaddr panic=3"
    bootm /dev/mem.uImage  This will now load the kernel (=uImage) via tftp and start it.The kernel boots and will use its "initramfs" that I compiled into it:My "initramfs" contains just the network modules, a busybox installation and a few scripts: These scripts will start the network, make a dhcp request (again) and finally start telnetd:Now I can connect via telnet to my box. The whole procedure does not need anything on the disk at all.I expect it would work even without having a disk, but I didn't try that. I now can mount partitions, communicate via network, whatever busybox allows.So it should be possible to download new images to the disk etc.Or simply repair the broken script you have changed? You now might ask "how can i create that uImage file?" For that I used two things:1) The kernel from the GPL package2) and the busybox sources (I used busybox-1.22.1 I already had from an openwrt installation). For busybox I used "defconfig", and changed (via menuconfig) to build it "static" (that is important). For the kernel I changed (via menuconfig) to use initramfs and added the path to my initramfs.cpio.gz.(in fact I tried a lot of other changes, but finally was able to remove all of them for this...) Here is my script I used to compile busybox and the kernel and generating the scripts in the initramfs:Disclaimer:I know I don't have all steps repeatable with this script. As I tried this several times, I know I copied the modules from the _bin folder (created during kernel compile) to the _install folder of busybox once.Maybe I forgot other steps I did. But I hope someone else can fill this gap. export ARCH=arm

  • Make my bookmarks list always visible even without opening Firefox

    Hi,
    After having unsuccessfully tried for years to install the bookmarks icon in the systray or in the quick launch bar, I had the good surprise sometime ago -and without knowing how it happened - to view all my bookmarked files on the left side of every windows in Firefox. I appreciated it, even if it took plenty of room and narrowed the active window... I dared not clicking the little cross ... but yesterday, in the place of my bookmark list, there stood another program which I had been consulting and was not needing on the moment... so I clicked the little cross...and have lost (for ever ?) my bookmarked list always visible. Hope I made me understood, I would like to have an easy access to my registered bookmarks, even without opening Firefox !
    Thank you for your help.

  • How can i run the example programme without hardware

    Hi,
         We are using NI-9233 for our Project. We would like to run the example programme, the NI-9233 getting started(host).vi ... I would like to ask that how can i run the Programme without Hardware.& How shall i get the input signal (simulating signal)?because we would like to test it while we are waiting for the hardware to be delivered .
    thanks
    Best regards

    As Mike indicated , " you can use MAX to simulate some (not all) DAQmx devices. There's a NI-USB-9233 device that you can probably use. Open MAX, then expand "My System", the expand "Devices and Interfaces", then right-click on "NI-DAQmx Devices" and select "Create New NI-DAQmx Device -> NI-DAQmx Simulated Device". Select the device from the list. See the online help for MAX for further help.
    If you don't see "NI-DAQmx Devices" in MAX you need to install NI-DAQmx. You can download it from NI here. "
    hi,
         the link you gave me to download is "NI-DAQmx Devices" ... There is no software to download for Labview 8.2.1. So should i use 8.1 or 8.3 instead of 8.2.1 ? If not, can you tell me the CD no. that includes the "NI-DAQmx Devices" folder of Labview 8.2.1 version? Because we can get the cd from our school's component store. Thank you so much.
    Best Regards,

  • [SOLVED]some console commands without console make gui programs killed

    I'm using openbox as WM. I think it is openbox that causes the trouble
    it seems that when I try ot execute some console application without console but the application needs user input, the problem occurs.
    when the issue arises, gui programs gets killed, leaving its window blank.
    not all of gui programs though, chromium and conky got closed but xterm didn't.
    however, they survive when they are executed with xterm.
    I could reproduce the problem with sudo or alsamixer, run by either right-click menu or gmrun.
    Is there anyone experiencing the same issue?
    sorry for my english.

    If you are trying to run a console or terminal application that needs user input, it must be run in a terminal window.  For example, to run alsamixer from the openbox menu I would have this in my ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml:
    <item label="Alsamixer">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>xterm -e alsamixer</execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    The command on the line with "<execute>" opens an xterm window and then the '-e' option tells xterm to run the next command on that line.
    Urxvt also uses the '-e' option to run commands.  To get htop to run from the open box menu in a urxvt window, I would use this:
    <item label="Htop">
    <action name="Execute">
    <execute>urxvt -e htop</execute>
    </action>
    </item>
    For gmrun, I believe you use Ctrl-Enter to have it open an app in a terminal.  At least that is what the wiki page says: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gmrun
