Back Dating to Tiger and updating to Leopard Issue

Hello. I bought an iMac nearly 3 years ago which came with Leopard preinstalled. Is that 10.5 what?
Anyway, since then I updated up until my current 10.5.8.
I have a massive problem with system privileges and my user account and really need to wipe the HD and do a clean install. This must be done using a disc as the system wont allow the user to do it from downloaded software logically as it would be on the same disk it would be trying to wipe.
I dont want any of my system back ups cause they-re all infected so all my files are safe on an external HD .
Only trouble is that although Leopard came preinstalled, the install discs that came bundled were / are actually Tiger. So my question is if I install Tiger am I going to have to pay $ to update to Leopard?

Was this a new or used computer? If a used computer and bought from a private party they may well have installed Leopard to make it more attractive to buyers, but unfortunately they are not supposed to do that unless they also give you the Leopard discs. If it was new or bought from a a certified retailer then they should have provided the Leopard upgrade disc if such exists (hard to tell without knowing exactly which iMac). Sometimes when a model comes out just as an OS version is released they already have the old version on the machine so they toss in an upgrade disc for the new version too. It's not rare but it is unusual to be in that position but that's the only one where unless the computer was supposed to come with Leopard that you can probably convince them to send you a set of Leopard discs.

  • I have a MAC Tiger and updated to a Snow Leopard,

Having trouble with Apple works 6
Just updated my Tiger to a Snow Leopard and certain pages in the Apple works 6 take to long to print.
4 to 5 minutes sometimes before the printer starts.
Not all the forme just a few. Others print very fast.
Hard drive was replaced, and all the downloads have been installed, to include Rosetta.
    Any ideas??

Print to PDF first, then open the PDF in preview.  Print from there.
You probably have some complex or large graphics on the pages that are hanging up the printer.

  • Dropbox letter ending support and use by 10.4 Tiger and  10. Leopard on May 18, 2015

    Hi everyone!  and  ChitlinsCC!
I know I owe some of you more replies in other threads....Sorry I got distracted viewing the latest posting by ChitlinsCC, in another thread so I made a new one for this new question :
I borrowed the following from your (ChitlinsCC's)  posting under "How do I do the rewards here properly for answering/helping replies to questions  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6870828
Look at the two red circles.......
I see you have "dropbox" icons, as I do, listed in all of your Screen shot images of the Finder!  (for those who don't know its the little box object with open lids)
Its useful for sharing photos among the family.
I'm sure you got their letter (if not check your inbox)
They sent a letter dated January 20, 2015,
stating (oh here is the letter in full so I don't have to paraphrase it)
    (Dropbox logo does not copy/paste)
    Hi (owner name of Dropbox),
We noticed that you're running the Dropbox desktop application (client) on an older operating system (OS X Tiger 10.4 or OS X Leopard 10.5). We're writing to let you know that as of May 18th, Dropbox will no longer support these older versions of OS X
Don't worry — your files and photos aren't going anywhere! But you'll need to update your computer to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later to access them through the Dropbox desktop application. Apple's instructions on how to update your operating system can be found here.
If you don't want to update your operating system, your files will still be available through the Dropbox website. However, on May 18th you'll be signed out of your Dropbox account on your computer and the Dropbox desktop application will no longer be accessible.
We apologize for the inconvenience. For more information, please check out our Help Center.
    Sincerely,
    - The Dropbox Team
So both TIger and Leopard users will no longer have access to this valuable photo sharing service.  (Too bad I could not post this in BOTH the Tiger and Leopard OSX discussion groups!)
The recommendation solution they provide, that we  "upgrade" to  10.6 is a joke....  I'm Re-reading that line to say "Find the money and get yourself a new machine and all new software and then you can use Dropbox again!"  (for free!)
Just anyone's comments or subsituations or  can we all write to Dropbox and persuade them to keep it going past May 18th 2015?
    Thanks all!
    Mac_Help

Replying to your Replies in the order they came!
    Hi BDAqua!
Yes, I'll post it also in Leopard section, see if I get anyone to "bite" there, and reply.
You are free to post your reply(ies) above also there as I'd copy your responses, but then you don't get credit from "me" for answering them twice you see
    Hi rccharles!
It's all the same protocol for file upload after all.   If it gives problems, you can always change the user agent string to something acceptable. The user agent string is all the server knows about your machine anyway.
Whew!  I thought I'd knew a lot about computers...  I'd have to go back to school to take night classes for a year or two to learn all that you threw out there....  What is what agent that is what changed? and how?  On a Tiger Mac?   Lots to learn (read that as many a slip twixt the cup and the lip) if I try to fool around with stuff I don't know anything about on May 18th, might lose all "user agent" contacts for the Mac, whatever they are!
Thanks for understanding that some of us here are new to the vocabulary there!!
    Hi ChitlinsCC!!
    Yes! Great message there!
I'd love to be able to read it "LITERALLY" too... but I had to post "some sort of question"  to ask to get responses and saying that I just didn't know if the message was one meaning or another might get no replies you see!
I believe as I think in the first post, that the app/application will simply cease to work...crash upon start up or  give your "bubble alert"  saying its unable to contact its server anymore----that would be a clear definition of lack of "support" for Tiger and Leopard, if you no longer can either upload photos, sort photos, send photos, etc etc using the app (except on the web, online version ----now wasn't it stupid of me to 10 years ago----to  reduce my Dropbox password and User name to "memorized" values of * *********** in the computer's  (not mine)  memory.  Someday maybe someone will figure out how to re-display a hidden password for the owner who has forgotten his and wants to link through a public computer or other device.
Thanks for trying to contact Dropbox....  Now I know what will happen if I do it (and saved me typing all of this over for the Dropbox people to "ignore".
    Thanks again!

  • Reinstalling Tiger and updates

I have the original Mac Mini with Panther disks. I bought the retail disks for Tiger and upgraded. I also installed all the updates. In the meantime, my boarder has been using my Mini. He will be leaving at the end of April. I feel that I should reformat and reinstall the OS. I already know how to reinstall from the Tiger disks and then the other software from the original disks. My question is: Will I have to install all the updates in order or just the last one for the OS and also the other software updates? Thank you.

About the boarder, he has been running an online "business" selling HDTV's and downloading a lot of files and also created some of his own. I found out that he is not completely honest in his dealings, won't pay his bills promptly, etc. And, he also owes me money. That is why I asked him to leave. I would rather reformat to get rid of all his stuff than to try to search and find everything. It's kind of like reformating and reinstall before you sell a computer.
I may just do the reinstall and let Software Update do the rest, and see what happens.
    Thank you for the responses.
PS While he has been using the computer, a lot of stuff has been changed, he has tried updates but didn't have the admin password. I would just rather do a reinstall.
And I appologize if this may seem like a rant about the boarder.

  • I cannot back up after restored and updated my iPad

First, my iPad2 ran on ios 4.3.3. Then I backed up it and kept its library and setting
Next, I restored and updated to run on ios 5.1.1.
The system (on iPad) asked me to set up as a new one or back up via icould or itune.
I surely chose the last one because of an old ios.
The picture of usb cable and itune figure then shown, so I plugged in with my PC and launched itune programme.
Wonderingly, it didnt have any buttoms which i could back up (plz see the piture below)
Q : What should I do for backing up it into my iPad?
PS : I have already followed this http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/#section_7 but it does not help!!!!!!

That is exactly what I would do with this situation. Like I said I have seen this problem before but I know that I was not able to figure out what the problem was.
Make sure that you are running the latest version of iTunes on your PC - and you could also try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes to see if that helps. I just don't know if that will work or if that is the reason that you are seeing this.

  • Cd burning issue after installing and updating snow leopard

After installing and updating snow leapard to the latest version, the cd burner for i-tunes quit working.  it says" burning disk initializing" then "burning disk finishing"  comes up with the error "the attempt to burn a disk failed.  the disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry.  Any suggestions to fix this problem?

First try other disks, brand new, then try another brand, then consider backup user files and (clean and polish then) c booting off the 10.6.3 disk and simply reinstalling OS X then updating to 10.6.8 again.
Hopefully this should fix the issue in OS X software, you may have to reinstall certain third party software again that it's kext files got kicked out of OS X by the reinstall.
If you get hung booting at any time, simply hold the shift key down and then update your software then reboot normally

  • Converting from Tiger and Panther to Leopard

I'm a relatively new Mac user and I am very impressed with what I saw in the Leopard. Because I have not had to deal with the upgrade process I do not know what I need to do for my machine. Can anyone help me out or pass on some hints and techniques possibly used when converting OS 9 to OSX?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Given the age of the iMac (Flat Panel) we cannot be sure that Apple will support Leopard on them. (As a new Mac user I suspect you actually have an Intel iMac and not an iMac (Flat Panel)).
However there is literally nothing to upgrading between versions of OS X; your Mac will do it all for you. Just insert the DVD and click "Upgrade". I would advise taking a good backup before hand just in case.
Moving between OS 9 and OS X was slightly more convoluted because Apple completely changed the OS and OS 9 software did not work natively under OS X, firmware had to be updated etc. Such architectural changes are not been made this time. The move from 10.4 to 10.5 will be very very easy.

  • Tiger and using snow leopard

If my computer is still running on Tiger, do i have to get the mac box set in order to run snow leopard on my computer? I guess my question is can i just buy the snow leopard, and have that work fine, without having to buy the mac box set?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Here are the short answers: Legally -NO, Technically -YES.
The Snow Leopard license agreement says that you must be running Leopard in order to install the regular version. Technically, the regular version will install fine.

  • Switching back&forth between Dialup and Cable Modem (Leopard)

Hey folks...I have a client who is using an iMac with Leopard (20inch titanium model from this year, 2gig coreDuo). She has cable modem, but cable service is very new to her area and thus never very reliable. For this reason, she's always had her Network preferences set up properly for both wireless and dialup. When her cable service drops out, she simply switches to dialup for a little while. The airport icon, top right of screen, can be clicked on to immediate access and choose between either of those configs. This always worked fine with Tiger, I set it up with her myself and it went swimmingly. Now that we've upgraded her to Leopard, her configs are still set up correctly, everything interfaces the same way, etc...however when she switches to the dialup method, it never connects. Nothing about the cable or dialup service has changed, and we only OSd in-place, so as i said configs and all relative information is exaclty the same. What do you think we need to correct or change? Thank you for any input!

    good stuff!

  • Ipod touch generation 2 ~ I can't send or receive emails from my gmail account.  I have gone back to factory settings and updated the device. It will not take my password.

I have not used this Touch iPod for quite some time and thought I would use it for collecting email when I am out.  I have wasted a lot of time trying to get this to work and now wonder if the 2nd generation is too old to send and receive email.

I am using imap on all my other devices.  I use a Google domain email address.  The only divice I have that will not sync is this older generation iTouch. The version without the camera. Model PB528LL.  I know my email address is correct and the password works everywhere else.

  • Logic 8 and possible Snow Leopard Issue

Ok folks, this is my first post/problem on the apple discussion boards....here it goes. Hopefully someone can tell me what my problem:
Specs: MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM: Operating on Snow Leopard.
Logic Pro 8.0.2; Lexicon Omega USB as the core audio.
Problem: First of all, I work primarily with MIDI and some vocal audio. Ever since I installed snow leopard on my computer Logic has been giving me a lot of problems. My CPU can't even handle one VST plugin with a couple effects on it now. Sometimes even just playing an instrument, one of the ram sticks will spike and either crash logic or say it's overloaded and cut out the audio. This happens either with a single instrument, or with a sequence I created, it can't play the loop back all the way through without saying "core audio overload". I primarily use Komplete 5 software instruments by Native Instruments, and I know these eat up CPU but it was never like this before I installed Snow Leopard. I tried dumbing down the I/O buffer size, and process buffer range, but none of these seem to make a difference. Why is it only one CPU bar that spikes? I'm not running anything else on the computer at the time. Is 2GB of ram not enough anymore?
One more issue that might help someone troubleshoot this...actually playing the instruments isn't as much of an obstacle as playback. Also, any session that I've made under the old operation system, if I try and open it up and play it, it either overloads IMMEDIATELY or the actual software instruments don't play, and the only way to make them play is to rewire them by taking them off and putting them back on again.
I can usually troubleshoot these things myself but for some reason I'm scared that it's a RAM issue and that I will need to buy a new computer to continue my producing. Because 2 is as high as this macbook goes, right? I hope it's just a USB thing and I need to upgrade my interface or switch to firewire.
Can anyone offer some advice or a solution to this problem?
    Thanks,
    J

    wow, thanks guys.

  • Battery update with Leopard?

Hi. I just got my MacBook Pro replacement computer in the mail and it came with Tiger and the upgrade Leopard disc.
When I turned on the machine the software update came up and the battery update was listed. I did not update anything since I was about to load Leopard on it and then do applicable updates.
When Leopard was finished installing, software update came up again with several updates (remote desktop client, itunes, quicktime and OSX 10.5.1 updates). Battery update was no longer there.
My question is, is this update not needed under Leopard? Should I look for and install this update separately?
    Thanks!
    Rob

Going by the number of problems people report after doing that "upgrade" I'd not rush to find it nor apply it to be honest. If it's not listed as a Leopard Software Update then leave well alone ...
