Backed-up GB files on server

It would appear my hard drive has tragically crashed, but I backed up a bunch of GB projects to my server here (http://makeoutmusic.knoxware.org/gossipculture/GarageBand/). They're .band files. Please tell me I did it right and can just just re-download them onto a fresh hard drive.

rsherid, here's the good news: I got one of your projects to work. The bad news: it can be complicated!
First of all, you have to download all the single files in your project (not the folders) from the server. Then, you create a new folder on your computer with the project name and replicate the file and folder structure exactly as it was on the server. Finally, you give your project folder the suffix ".band" - it will automatically turn into a GB "file" on your computer.
The catch: When I downloaded your stuff (with Firefox), some files got the wrong file extension, especially the ProjectData file came out as "ProjectData.htm" and showed a firefox logo. Deleting the ".htm" didn't help. Since I'm not very familiar with file types in OS X, I did this: I copied a ProjectData file from another GB project, opened it with TextEdit and replaced its content with the content of the downloaded file. Saving it didn't change the file type (just a blank file logo), and the project opened perfectly in GarageBand.
So if you want to go that way, it's doable with some sort of mucking around - good luck!
P.S.: All this might be a lot easier if you use an FTP program to download the complete project, you might not even have to worry about file types, but I couldn't get mine to work with your server (it didn't allow anonymous FTP login).

  • DW CS5 -- Issues with uploading files to server

Hi everyone -- I recently took over control of a website that hasn't been updated in years. I am in charge of redesigning the site, but need to keep what we have up-to-date until the new site is ready to roll out. I received the FTP info for the server and got site files into local folders so I can make changes. I've made changes to one file (index.html) and am trying to put that file back onto the server; but in the file transfer process, the dependent files do not get uploaded (I get a message saying "'fileName' - same - not transferred"). The one file that I have changed, and Dreamweaver says has been uploaded, is not updating on the web. I checked the file on both my local and remote view and both reflect the changes I have made -- just not the actual site on the web.
I'm sure that's a little confusing, so I'll try to summarize (with bulletts!):
I have correct FTP info to server
I downloaded site files from server to local folders
I edited index page, and put the file to the server
Dreamweaver indicates that the file has been successfully uploaded
Local view shows edits I have made
Remote view shows edits I have made
Other dependent files have not been uploaded ("'fileName' - same - not transferred" error message)
Actual website does not reflect changes made to index page
    What am I doing wrong????
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Filezilla is a free, open source FTP client. It's a standard desktop application. An FTP client connects to a server using the File Transfer Protocol and allows you to transfer files up to the server (upload) or download files from the server (download).
Why use a separate FTP client rather then the FTP functionality built-in to Dreamweaver? Because, in my experience, it works better the Dreamweaver's sometimes flakey FTP functionality and it's easier to troubleshoot FTP issues.
In Firefox, to clear the cache, go to Tools -> Advanced -> Click Network Tab -> Click "Clear Now" button. Hit F5 to refresh the page and see what changes (if caching was the issue). If nothing changes then for some reason your files are not being uploaded properly to the server. In that case I'd check to make sure you're loading your files to the correct directory on the server (usually a folder called "httdocs" or "www" - check with your hosting company to amke sure).
    Hope this helps.

  • Report not found in File Repository Server

I am looking for some guidance as to what to try next with this issue.
We had ran into some issues with the central management service and had to reinstall crystal. During the setup we are connecting to our mysql database and the reports and folder structure is restored in the Central Management Console but when the reports are previewed or scheduled to run they fail I receive the following message:
"File generated name.rpt not found on File Repository Server.
    Unable to retrieve Object.
File generated name.rpt not found on File Repository Server."
Has anyone came across this issue and if they could provide a solution would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

there are very many forum posts and SAp knowledge articles on this topic/error message. Please do use search before posting.
The repository that stores all your objects in Crystal is dual one part is int he DB - called CMS DB - it stores all te metadata, and second part is FRS (Input /Output servers) - they store actual physical reports and instances on the disc.
My guess is that during re-install you either wiped out original FRS location or after re-install didn't point your FRS to the right place.
If its second - all you need to do is point FRS to the right directory and you'll get your reports back.
If it's first - you just lost all your reports/universes etc.... and will need to restore from backup.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

Now to give a bit of a back story as to what happened before this. We were having a issue logging into the domain on this machine. The only way to get passed this was to unjoin and rejoin it to the domain then this happened.  When I try to go to the CMC using the admin launch page I get the following error.

I'm a bit new to business objects software as this system was setup way before I started working for this company and noone that put this system in place has worked here for a while now. So I'm hoping some of you can help me out a bit or atleast point me in the right direction.

Disregard that last post. I have gotten into Central Management Console.  My next question is, where in the CMC do I got to fix the following 2 errors I was getting?  I figure that are both talking about the samething but since this is my first time I've been in the CMC I am not sure where to go to fix it.

  • How to back up iPad files away from home?

One can obviously back up iPad files away from home by uploading them to a server in the clouds, but it appears that there is no way to back up iPad files locally when not connected to a computer. What if I'm shooting photos and video while traveling and editing them on my iPad? Uploading gigabytes of data to a web server would be really painful! When I asked this question at my local Apple Store, it was obvious that Apple had not briefed their store employees on this issue.
As far as I can see, the iPad aspires to be far more than a home entertainment unit, as well it should. But the bottom line is that you've gotta be able to back up your work. Does anyone have any thoughts on this issue?

Some aspects yes via MobileMe such as contacts, mail etc which should already be in the Cloud or on another remote server somewhere.
but it appears that there is no way to back up iPad files locally when not connected to a computer.
    Correct, subject to the above.

Remember they have had the iPad less time than you Not an excuse but something to consider. Your point is well made though. Thats why its not a replacement for a laptop and has been stressed repeatedly to be so.

Yes, its not a laptop replacement so your expectations are great, but not something that the architecture could support. Once Apple get the MobileMe/iDisk thing sorted out to allow storage on that from the iPad it will be fine. Until then, its 'just' a mobile entertainment device as advertised and it will never be a replacement for a laptop.

How do I manage open files in Server 2012 without resorting to 3rd party application?
I cannot find the Mange open files in FSRM.

Wouldn't it make sense to place it in the server manager / shares section?
I mean, second to creating or finding a share, isn't this what most users would be after?
For like 20 years we've been trained to right click to find stuff Microsoft is hiding, and right click don't do nothin' here.  You gotta go hunting under tools.   Or, forget the new half-baked interface with half of what you need and go old school,
direct to Start - Computer..Right Click.. whoops... that doesn't exist anymore.....
Drool.........drool.............Find that hiding, blinking start button in a RDP session, click start after three trys,  and TYPE IN "Computer Management" .  Right Click, Pin it to your desktop, pin it to the start screen, pin it to the taskbar, send
it to OneNote, and upload it to skydrive  so you can find it again, then get back to what you were doing....to find the cottin' pickin open files and kick your users off so you can have your way with the server.

  • Back Up iPhoto Files on CD or DVD- Correct Procedure

Can you post here or point me to the recommended Procedure for backing up iphoto files on external drive to disk (CD or DVD)? I have read many bits and pieces through various postings, but didn't see one procedure that contains all the steps.
My external hard disk crashed, along with my iphoto libraries. I do have a back up copies of my iphoto files, so I will be restoring most of the photos. However, among these disks I have one CD backup copy I did that doesn't seem to work. Not sure what I did wrong with that one.
Please advise specifically which file folders to copy (or drag? or import?) and any special settings. Also, if you could add a procedure for incremental back ups. I have read the recommendation to copy the iphoto6.library folder regularly Should I save this on the disk with the photo files or on a separate disk labeled with the same date and library name. Also, I'd like to hear your advise for handling incremental backups for new rolls added.
Finally, if I purchase SuperDuper or DejaVu, will these applications better serve me in other ways and accomplish the same goal? I do use Backup, but I am concerned that it has too many limitations.
As soon as I get my HD back, I plan to put the iphoto libraries back on the external drive and want to get a clean procedure going, after this scare.
I am learning lots from this experience...

    Hello, Sue,
Sorry about your drive crash! Nice that you did back up your photos, though.
Are you using the external drive as a backup to your computer's drive for iPhoto?
Or, are you using the external drive as the primary location for your iPhoto Library(ies)? If you are using the external as the primary location, then you will need another external drive as a backup, or burn the photos to CDs or DVDs.
Re: your previously burned CD--I am not sure why it does not work for you, but, there are two methods of burning photos to disks:
    1. Burning from WITHIN iPhoto Burn from iPhoto--this method creates a disk that appears in the Source Pane of iPhoto when the disk is inserted into the computer's drive. It will keep your photos and albums looking as they did in iPhoto, but you need to be in iPhoto to access the photos. They do not need to be reimported. This is a good method for storage and easy access. You can delete these photos from your current library and just pop in the disk when you want them.
    2. Burning from FINDER Burn from Finder--this method stores the photos for you, and can be accessed by any computer. When the disk mounts, you will have to reimport these photos into iPhoto to work with them. They will not be in albums, unless you specifically export them from iPhoto giving them the album name. (Post back if you want to do this; more instructions). This is a good method for backing up and having access to the photos on any computer that can read a disk.
I think it is a good idea to have both a backup external drive and the photos burned to disks. I have most of my photos burned to disks via method 2 just to preserve the photos. These are my old scanned-in snapshots, and I am not so worried about losing them on a drive because I have the negatives and the actual prints. (It would take a while to locate the negatives, but the prints are all in photo albums and labeled!).
I also have created iMovies and burned to DVDs, all the photos and videos of our family for a 17-year time period. (I have about 10 year's worth more to do to 2006, and probably a couple more encompassing photos from 1890s-1970s).
So, I will eventually have three backups: my external drive, the movie-DVDs, and DVD disks of the photos; in addition to the prints.
Some purists and worriers think that for the long-term archiving, we should be printing out our digital photos onto acidfree paper and placing them carefully in albums designed to preserve the photos. They think that DVDs can become damaged or obsolete and that the only way to really keep a photo is via paper prints.
Specifically, you will want to back up the entire iPhotoLibrary folder from Finder. This is the folder that by default is located in your 'Pictures' folder. Initially, you just drag the entire folder over to the external drive. (By the way, be sure that your external drive is Mac-formatted. Most are preformatted for PCs, so check).
When it has finished copying, you have backed up your library.
If you import more photos, you need to back up again. It is easiest just to drag the whole folder over again.
Some of us like to break up our library into several libraries. I have about ten or so, broken by dates. Since I have scanned in all my old photos, and edited most of them, I don't need to back up those libraries until I do some more editing. The current year's library I back up after almost every photo import. I back up the whole library--not incrementally.
Old Toad recommends making a backup copy of that Library6.iPhoto database file:
+For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.+
If you do create multiple libraries, you will need to backup this database file for EACH of them. I created a Library6.iPhoto backup folder, and I made a subfolder for each of them with that library's name on it and put the corresponding Library6.iPhoto file into its subfolder, carefully noticing which library I am backing up.
Just remember, the three rules of computer data:
    1. Backup
    2. Backup
    3. Backup
And, my favorite, "There are two types of computer users: those who have lost data, and those who will." Having been both.....lost some papers my daughter wrote when an external failed.....I am now more cautious.

  • Time machine backs up 32K files even when nothing changed.

I just received a brand new OSX Lion Server (Mac Mini). I also installed an external USB HD for backup.
Unfortunately, each Time Machine back-up eats up about 1.9GB and backs up 32K files, even if nothing changed (e.g. I leave it on over night).
Below is the log, which I received with time machine buddy (a widget).
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/backup/Backups.backupdb
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
1.93 GB required (including padding), 363.27 GB available
Copied 326275 files (64.7 MB) from volume Server HD.
1.91 GB required (including padding), 363.10 GB available
Copied 326402 files (16.8 MB) from volume Server HD.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
In this case, there were small changes, so 17 or 65MB sounds about right. What bugs me is that the backup took 2 hours(!) and required 1.91 GB. As every backup is longer than the hourly interval, in the current setup, if I switch on TM it is continuously backing up all day all night.
I have already erased the backup disk twice and have also tried to delete the .inProgress file. After such a restart, the first backup is big and real fast, and then it is just as slow as ever.
Does anybody have any idea what it could be? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Use either of these to see what it is actually being backed up?

  • Time Machine stopped backing up certain files

Hi, I am running OS X Server 10.5.4. (Yes, upgrade is planned)
Time Machine has been running fine, backing up everything, etc.
However, at some point, Time Machine stopped backing up certain files regularly. The affected files are all Frontier databases (frontierkernel.org). They are 'open' files, and I wonder if this is the cause. However, I know that they used to be backed up regularly, without problems. So, maybe Time Machine was updated in 10.5.4 to change this behavior?
If I quit Frontier and then reopen it, Time Machine will back up the files. So, this tells me that TM can back up open files... sometimes. But, if I let the machine run for days, TM often skips these files, even though they have been updated on disk.
I've checked and these files are not set to be excluded from TM.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

These aren't the cause, but might indicate a problem with, or communicating with, your TM drive. Try the things in #D2 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Everything else looks normal (assuming the files in question are on the 06-0834 drive).
Since the same files are backed-up sometimes but not others, it's probably also not something corrupted (usually, corruption will cause the backup to fail, but rarely a whole folder won't get backed-up).
So we're back to your original suspicion that they weren't backed-up because they were open. Normally, an open file will be backed-up. In the case of large databases, that's often a problem, as the entire database is backed-up if only a single small change is made, often taking up a lot of time and disk space. There are a many threads here about that.
There does appear to be an extended attribute that will prevent TM from backing up a file. XCODE seems to set that on it's "build" folders, for example. Perhaps the Frontier package sets it while the files are open, and removes it when they're closed? If so, maybe there's an option somewhere to disable that?
Can you check with the Sourceforge folks about that?
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm out of ideas.

  • Will the apple airport extreme back up a windows 2003 server?

will the apple time capsule back up a windows 2003 server?

Yes.. the TC is SMB enabled..
That means it can store files.. there is no backup in the TC.. Time Machine in the Mac has no useful equivalent in the PC.. and Microsoft backup is such rubbish as to be totally worthless. Just buy a backup package that can use network drive.. there are literally hundreds around.. if you are backing up a server.. I do hope you already have some sort of back up regeme.
TC is not fast though.. so you might consider if another type of backup would not work better for you.

  • ASP Delete File from server

I have made a file sharing app, and the description and file
name are stored in my access db, when i delete the recordset for
the file i also want to delete the actual file. i am able to delete
the file with the full path entered and the file name as a
    variable,
    with this code:
    <%
    Dim filepath
    filepath = Session("file_del")
    set filedel = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    filedel.DeleteFile("C:\localhost\CallCenter\EMPLOYEE_FILES\"&
    filepath), True
    set filedel = nothing
    %>
I put the name of the file in the file_del session variable
on the page that deletes the recordset.
But i would like to make it work on my hosted site without
having to change the path to my sites, so i have made this code:
    <%
    Dim filepath
    filepath = Session("file_del")
    strPhysicalPath = Server.MapPath(filepath)
    set filedel = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
filedel.DeleteFile strPhysicalPath , True 'Line that causes
    ERROR
    set filedel = nothing
    %>
But the error comes File Not found.
if i just display the strPhysicalPath variable on the page
without the delete action it displays the proper path.
how can i get the strPhysicalPath to be read, i have tried
all of the ways i can think of
    filedel.DeleteFile strPhysicalPath , True
    filedel.DeleteFile & strPhysicalPath & , True
    filedel.DeleteFile (strPhysicalPath) , True
    filedel.DeleteFile ("" & strPhysicalPath & "") , True
    filedel.DeleteFile ( & strPhysicalPath) , True
But none of them work ?
    Any help would be great

After some rest and a closer examination, i realized the
error was in the mappath line, it wasnt including the folder that
held the files. strPhysicalPath = Server.MapPath(filepath) was
wrong so, I added the folder name: strPhysicalPath =
Server.MapPath("EMPLOYEE_FILES/" & filepath) then the file is
    deleted. so complete code is:
    <%
    Dim filepath, strPhysicalPath
    filepath = Session("file_del")
    strPhysicalPath = Server.MapPath("EMPLOYEE_FILES/" &
    filepath)
    set filedel = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
    filedel.DeleteFile (strPhysicalPath), True
    set filedel = nothing
    %>

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

  • I recently downloaded a  bunch of songs an ringtones from Itunes on my phone. I synced up the phone to my computer to back up the files and to charge it and afterward all the new music and ringtones are gone?! Checked iTunes and they're not there either!

I recently downloaded a bunch of songs and ringtones to my iPhone 4 and when I synced my phone to my computer to back up the files and to charge the phones the ringtones and songs were gone. They disappeared from my phone and from my iTunes as well. I checked my my iTunes for downloadable items and there was nothing there. I went onto iTunes and tried to download the same things that I had previously and when I did it said I had already downloaded them? iTunes only gave me the option to purchase the music and ringtones again.  Does this happen often or is there something wrong with the software on my iPhone?

    Hi,
Did you have the music in your iTunes library on your computer when you signed up for match? How did you transfer the music from you iPhone to your computer? Do you have a back up.
