Backup drive not mounting.

Here is the scenario.
I was trying to install Leopard the other night when I ran into the HFS volume issue. or whatever. So, I already had my Tiger system backed up to the old 80 gig hard drive that was in my Macbook before I upgraded to a 200 gig model. Everything fit on there just fine, as i haven't added much since then. I went ahead and reformatted so that I could put Leopard on my machine. Everything when smoothly, after I booted up from the old drive that is in a case connected via USB and switched it to the GUID format. After Leopard was installed I could see the volume from Tiger and the Windows volume that i had on there from boot camp. However, when I let the computer do a system update, the Tiger part of the partition no longer shows up when I connect the old HD via USB. The partition for Windows shows up, but no Mac OS X.... Is there a way to retrieve the information on that partition of the drive? I have tried and tried to mount it, verify it, repair it... all with no success. I even reinstalled leopard to rid the system of the updates, but to no avail. I'm pretty lost about it and would hope that this is a fixable problem.

I am going to try to use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directories... Searched google for some forums on other situations. Sounded like a good idea.

  • Time Machine error - backup drive not mounted

Our family has 3 iMacs now running 10.5. One has a hard drive connected to it. The others are networed via a couple of Airport Extremes. The network is fine (all have internet). Time Machine is running fine on the iMac connected to the hard drive and on one of the others via the network.
But on the 3rd I keep getting an error that the backup drive is not mounted. It can mount it manually and see it (and its files) fine. The hard drive is configured so that everyone has read & write access. I've tried restarting it and resetting prams. I've tried connecting to the hard drive as a guest and as an authorized user. I still get the same error.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

It seems to be working now. I trashed the old sparsebundle file and let it start from scratch. Wish I thought of that earlier .......

  • SOLUTION - USB 3.0 External Drives Not Mounting on MBP Retinas - SOLUTION

So I have been having the same problem as everyone else who has issues with USB 3 external hard drives not mounting on their MBP Retinas. My friend told me to try unplugging the USB cord and plugging it back in instantly (like in half a second, so as to not let the power turn off on the drive).  I had my doubts but then I tried it just now, and MY DRIVE MOUNTED.
GO TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS FOR YOU!
UPDATE: I am using a powered external drive (Seagate Backup Pro 3TB).  Not sure if this will work with bus powered drives, but I think it might, as my friend might have been using a bus powered drive.
Also, I just bought two Hitachi TOURO 750GB bus powered portable drives (7200rpm/USB 3.0) and they mounted perfectly without problem as soon as I plugged it in for the first time.

Did you unplug the USB cable from the computer or from the external drive? This fix has been posted here previously but it was reported that the cable had to be unplugged from the device, not the computer. If the cable was unplugged from the computer instead, the fix didn't work.

  • 10.4.7 & FireWire drives not mounting

    Hi everyone,
since this morning my trusted LaCie FW HDs won't mount, are not seen in System Profiler and Disk Utility.
I tried almost every thing I could find, resetting vram, pram, powering everything down, waiting, disconnecting all the cables, powering back up, connecting one after another, etc. - no changes.
Every application runs fine. Except, of course, Logic because I have all my sounds and song projects on these drives.
My system.log continues to say every second again:
...-Computer kernel[0]: AppleFWOHCI_AsyncTransmit::waitForDMA - context not going inactive.
    The console.log repeats:
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "121-210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] attempt to make FSSpec for "210.cypress" failed -120\n
-Computer root[175]: [MAFL] found no firmware to load for 210\n
Does anybody know what these logs mean?
Is anybody else having this problem with 10.4.7?
I started a similar thread on A-S-D- Installation and Setup, only to find out, that a lot of people there are experiencing the same issue (FW drives not mounting, not showing).
    Would resetting the PMU help?
    Please help, I can't work

Back from the mysterious world of HDs, so easy to solve..., sometimes...
I tried the HDs on my friends older PB and all was fine.
Resetting my computers PMU did not solve the problem, after I tried everything else.
    I refrained from reinstalling 10.4.7.
All other applications (but Logic, because I could not access my files) were running smooth.
Going back to 10 a.m. yesterday, basically starting over, there was one thing I missed checking (being human): the AC to DC converters supplied by LaCie for their drives.
See, they are under my desk, like out of sight...
Voilá! Individual testing revealed, that the AC/DC converter for the first LaCie drive in my chain did not spin up any of my other six LaCie drives, which I never run all at the same time, but they still have their own power supply.
Changed power supply on the first HD and now I am back to the fast speed and glitch free system I love. Back to enjoying work as well
What a day. And I am very sorry, that I was implying to blame 10.4.7 for this. My PB has never been faster

  • Hard Drives Not Mounting - Help!

    Hello,
This is my first post, so please forgive me if I leave anything out....
I recently had to replace my hard drive. Got it all going, then I noticed when I went to put a music CD in, that it would not show up. I tried others with no luck....then I put in a cd with data, and it showed up on the desktop....
While trying to mess around, I made my 2 LaCie external hard drives go away! I have tried checking cables, and they come on when the computer does, they don't show up in system profiler....
Please let me know what information you might need to help me diagnose these problems....my computer has been so good to me, I want it back up and running...
    Powerbook G4 Ti 667 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 Ram

Hi, mcholley, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I can't suggest any remedy for your optical drive not reading audio CDs but having no trouble with data CDs, except to say it's apparently a software problem, not hardware-based.
After replacing your hard drive, did you reinstall your operating system from scratch on it, or did you restore your OS from a backup you had made?
The disappearance of your external drives (are they USB or FireWire?) may be power-related. Are they externally powered, or are you powering them from the USB or FireWire bus? If they're bus-powered, are you connecting both of them at once? That won't work: together they demand more power from the bus than it can supply, and while they may spin, they won't mount. Connect only one of them at a time. Is either of them detected by Apple System Profiler when just one is connected to the Powerbook? Does it mount on the desktop then?
If you've been able to connect both drives to the Powerbook at the same time in the past, and both have mounted OK, then there's been some hardware change recently, other than your hard drive replacement, that has caused the loss of external drive detection. Is it possible that during your recent operations you've turned off one or both of the external drives, or disconnected it/them from the Powerbook, without dismounting it from the desktop first? Depending on what, if anything, the drive was doing at the time, that can make a FireWire drive unmountable and all the data on it inaccessible. In that case it may be necessary to erase and reformat the drive. I don't know whether the same is true of USB drives.
Do you have another Mac to which you can connect the drives, to see whether they show up on it? If they do, you might have to consider the possibility that the port(s) to which you've been connecting them on your Powerbook is bad.

  • Boot drive failed; external backup drive not being seen

I've had a Windows Server 2012 Essentials machine (6 drives + 1 external USB 3TB dedicated backup) running fine for over a year now.  The system backup was configured through the Essentials Dashboard, the backup drive was found automatically by
Windows without any custom drivers, and was successfully backing up as scheduled.  A few days ago, the server rebooted for an update, and started blue-screening early on during the boot.  Using the install media, I went to the restore facility, but
the dedicated external USB backup drive isn't being found (the restore list is empty).  I tried using other USB ports (they all work, as tested with the keyboard), but the backups on it still aren't showing.  Moving the backup drive to a nearby Windows
8.1 machine, it shows up correctly in the Disk Manager (the name is correct; no drive letter assigned, as expected).  From the system-recovery command-line on the server, wbadmin get drives show it, but as [not mounted].
What should my next steps be?  Is it safe to mount it to a drive letter on the Windows 8.1 machine and share it out, or will that irreparably damage the backups?  Is there something obvious I'm missing?  Why isn't the Windows Server 2012 Essentials
install media's repair functionality finding it (this should be a no-brainer, right?)?
The drive in question is a Seagate model SRD00F2.
    Thanks!

    1. What updates has been installed. See info in WindowsUpdate.log.
    2. Hope you has not installed optional drivers. It this is true try to return back or reinstall drivers from server vendor support page (perhaps support for USB 3)

The reboot was overnight (about 4am) on Sunday, 2014-04-13.  It was for the latest updates from Microsoft at that time (so the prior Tuesday's batch; see below for the details from WindowsUpdate.log).
No optional drivers installed, other than the motherboard ones at initial system load.  They've been running great for a year or so now.  They weren't part of the update.
Not possible to check.  Trying to boot into safe mode also blue screens fairly early on during boot (about 15-20 seconds; same error).  Boot logging never generates a log because it doesn't get far enough to dump to disk.

  • Hard Drive Not Mounting After Being Magically Changed to Read Only

I was using a firewire connected, verbatim 1tb drive as a time machine. Everything had been working fine, but I walked away from my laptop for the morning and came back this afternoon to find my hard drive changed to read only. Time machine wouldn't back up to the hard drive; so, I rebooted.
Since then, I haven't been able to get the hard drive to mount. It won't show up in Drive Utility or on the desktop. I have rebooted the hard drive, unplugged it, turned it on and off.
What should I do? How do I fix this? It has my backups and my music. I'm no amused.

I've had exactly the same trouble this morning.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with my Time Machine on a portable Hard Drive. When doing my regular back up the computer froze. I force restarted the computer and the TM drive came up as 'Read Only'.
So, I rebooted again and the drive is not mounting at all. I can see it connected through System Profiler, however the drive isn't showing up in Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any ideas? Coz I don't seem to be the only one with this issue.

  • Toshiba backup drive not recognized when plugged into thunderbolt display.

My Toshiba backup drive does not mount to my MacBookPro when plugged into my Thunderbolt Display. It works beautifully when plugged directly into my MBP, and other USB devices work beautifully when plugged into the same USB ports on the Thunderbolt Display.
All my equipment is pretty new. The Toshiba is currenlty configured to be my Time Machine back up drive.
    Laptop: 15" Macbook Pro, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 100 MHz DDR3, Mac OS 10.8.5
Backup Drive: Toshiba 500GB Canvio® Basics USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive
Apple Thunderbolt Display: 2560 x 1440, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB graphics
When I plug the backup drive into the TB Display, usually nothing happens. The blue light on the drive doesn't come on, and it doesn't mount to the desktop. If I wiggle the USB back there, sometimes the blue light will come on, and sometimes it will mount for a minute then go away. This is true for all 3 USB ports. I have not had problems with any other USB devices, but the only other ones I've plugged into the Thunderbolt are my keyboard, bluetooth headset charger, and other items that probably use less power than the backup drive.

But the cable works when plugged into my laptop. Plus, the cable connection is pretty specific to the device; I'm not sure if you can buy another one seperately.

  • Time Capsule Backup Drive Not Recognized

I switched from a cable provider to Fios/Verizon.  My Apple Extreme/time capsule is connected to their modem/router with an ethernet connection, and works as a router to which I can connect with the Verizon network or the personal network previously set up on the time capsule.  The Time Capsule icon shows on the Airport Utility on my iPads and iPhones, but not on the Macbook's airport utility--just the "network" icon displays. So I have wireless connectivity on my devices, but I can't connect to the backup drive on the time capsule for my Macbook, so I can't back up my data.  I keep getting "an unexpected problem occurred" or "there was a problem connecting to the server "time capsule xxxxx".  I've restarted the time capsule, with a soft reboot and factory default reboot, but no luck.  Any suggestions/advice?

My Apple Extreme/time capsule is connected to their modem/router with an ethernet connection, and works as a router to which I can connect with the Verizon network or the personal network previously set up on the time capsule.
FIOS is a modem router.. the Time Capsule should be in bridge mode.. not router.
Please redo the setup.. this time choose bridge mode and I also recommend very short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Eg.. Base station name. TCgen4
    Wireless name TCwifi
All passwords should also comply with that.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric but can be 8-20 characters and mixed case and numbers.
When you use Mavericks or Yosemite it has issues finding the TC.. especially if you are connected to the FIOS wireless.. so make sure you connect to the TCwifi and make sure you have IPv6 set to link-local only in the computer.
If the TC disk does not show in finder.. manually mount it.
In Mavericks I think it is better to use AFP.. so Go, Connect to Server.
    AFP://TCgen4.local
In Yosemite it seems SMB works better.
    SMB://TCgen4.local
What is more in Yosemite it has issues with network names no matter how short.. try using the TC IP address.
eg SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with the IP address you will find in airport utility.. however also note it should be statically set and this can be a bit complicated)
Tell us how you go using the name first.. and what OS on the computer??

  • Existing Backup Drive re-mounted; now TM creates DMG on my desktop

What am I doing wrong? I decided to unplug my external drive that had been backing up TM for about 2 days. When I re-mounted it, although TM still recognized it as my backup drive, it started a new backup file on my desktop. Clearly I want it to not only recognize my backup drive, but also to continue to create and use the backup history from the same archive. What do I need to do?
    tia.

    webweave,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
Generally, as discussed above, having 2 mount points for the same disk in the volumes folder won't prevent a successful backup. But in your case (#15!), that's a problem. More often than not, they are being created by Time Machine because you already have one or more instances of the Time Capsule disk mounted on your desktop. Ejecting the TC disk when it is not needed is the best way to avoid creating multiple mount points.
If you have any further questions, please post them in a new thread. You can refer back to this discussion with a link if necessary.
    Cheers!

  • Seagate goflex 2TB external drive not mounting Yosemite.

    Hello:
I have been using a Seagate golfer 2TB external HD for time machine since 2012. No problem with subsequent OS X upgrades. My last backup was performed 3 months ago in an iMac with Mavericks. Today I have a new iMac with Yosemite. Due to the new iMacs does not have firewire connectors, I had to buy an Apple adaptor from FW to Thunderbolt. When I plugged in the HD it did not mount. Checked the cables, changed HD connector, tried my MBP, changed the cable to a USB that comes with the Seagate and nothing happened. Run disk utility and the disk appears, but the information related to storage, number of files is unavailable.
I checked in Seagate webpage and found a software called Seagate dashboard. I installed it and run test feature. After the test the HD finally mounted but came with a warning that says something like this: "OS X could not repair the disk. Backup your data and reformat the drive". Run disk utility and all the info appeared. However, when I run migration assistant to migrate all my data to the new mac, the app does not find the external HD. Tried to run Time machine and it is not found, either. The only thing that I could do is to double click the icon in desktop and found that the Backups.backupdb file is there with all my backups.
Considering that the external drive is having problem, my question is: Can I "move" the Backups.backupdb file to the desktop of the new iMac, repair or erase the external HD using disk utility and then move again the Backups.backupdb file to the EHD to see if it works?.
    Thanks.
    Franklin.

    Thanks Dan.
While I waited for an answer I decide to install a Seagate app called "Seagate Dashboard". This app have a feature that "test" your HD. I run it and I got a message that said something like I the disk has damaged and has to be repaired, please back up your data. After that the HD finally mounted in my desktop.
So, ok I have a dilemma: try to enter in my HD and drag the files I needed or pay a specialist to fix my problem. I chose the first one, drag and drop.
And finally I had success. I could enter in the backup the Time machine did and drag all the files I needed. As a matter of fact, I tried to use Migration Assistant and it worked perfectly.
My conclusion: I had luck, the pure one.
Now I decided to have two back-up instead of one. And accident can happen again I could not have the same fortune.

  • WD hard drive not mounting on startup...

Grrr! This is driving me nuts! I have a WD MyBook Essential 2.0T USB hard drive connected to my iMac 27" i7, and every time I reboot the iMac, the drive fails to remount. Disk Utility doesn't recognize it, either. My only option is to disconnect the USB cable and then reconnect it. The drive then shows up. But pulling a cable is so very not an acceptable solution! Don't think data can be corrupted if the drive hasn't mounted, but still....
I have four other, older WD drives and none do this. I had a more recent WD MyBook Essential drive that also wouldn't mount on startup on my old MacBook Pro, wouldn't take the updated firmware, and kept corrupting files, and I ultimately replaced it with this new 2.0T drive shortly after getting the new iMac. But even with a new drive, new iMac, and different cable, I still can't get the WD drive to mount upon reboot. Arrggghh!
Has Western Digital done something different with these newer drives? How can I get this thing to mount after a reboot?
    Thanks!

Western Digital has been playing with their firmwares for years. They keep trying to maximize power efficiency to anticipate when the computer will use the drive and shut it down when it's not required. This isn't really a good thing for Time Machine, and I don't want any vendor to constantly change their firmware for their purposes. Many other companies seem to be able to build drives that just work.
I've updated the firmwares on many of these drives for clients because they performed so flakey with both USB and Firewire. I think there are problems with the firmwares being designed to maximize power consumption at the cost of not being always ready for Time Machine. Some of the WD firmware is actually on the drive itself, not the interface chipset, so problems return when you swap out the drives in the cases...
In addition, I have no need for all of the freeware/backup programs and other features they junk up these drives with. I just want reliable drives for backing up files, without having to uninstall their embedded programs. I found this review that pretty much sums it up for me: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1FBX79QK9IR9N/ref=cmcr_prviewpnt#R1FBX79QK9IR9N
Looks like you've been burned twice by their eager, innovative engineers.

  • After Leopard upgrade external drive not mounting

Ok, after finally getting through the dead blue screen issue I have Leopard up and running.
New problem, my external USB hard drive (I/O Magic 80GB USB 2.0) will not mount. I've used this drive up to and including the day I started the upgrade as my backup drive. Now when I plug it in it does not mount, I cannot see it listed in Disk Utility and it does not show up in the System Profiler. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get this to work?

    Update:
I brought it (third time's a charm?) to the Apple Store once again: the iMac, the WD My Book, my cables, etc. They tried it; no luck. They tried the My Book in their computer (think it was a MacBook running Leopard) with my cable; showed up no prob.
One other interesting thing this tech did was look in Apple Profiler for Firewire, where there was an odd Warning in red that no Firewire devices could be found. (This while plugged in to 400 Firewire port w my cable.) Then tried it plugged in to my iMac w 800 Firewire cable; voila! It appeared! Then tried another device in the 400 slot; it showed up fine. (huh?) Tried a different 400 FW cable w My Book in iMac, no luck.
The tech looked bemused. He sold me an 800 FW cable and told me to try sending the cable back to Western Digital.
Meanwhile, twelve days after contacting WD about this problem, they responded with this link:
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support and I apologize for the delayed response.
We have seen a couple of issues with Leopard.
The following link Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time Machine
(specifically, single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in size as well as NTFS drives of any size and partition scheme). http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306907
The following link addresses the latest release updates to the Leopard operating system 10.5.1. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/11/12/latestmac_os_x_10_5_1_build_fixes_finder_data_lossissue.html
I haven't used Time Machine yet (will get different external for that if I decide to) so the second link was more applicable to my situation.
I did just install 10.5.1 a couple days ago, it didn't resolve this for me; since other devices worked in the 400 port, the tech thought perhaps it was a software issue...<grin>
Hope others have equally simple solutions..
