Backup drives keep disappearing

the back up drives that I have associated with time machine keep disappearing. just drop off of finder and the desktop and even they are still hooked up, i cant get them back so I can access them. this includes rebooting, and turning off all of the electronics. they will randomly reappear. when they do, the time machine cannot complete the backup prior to disappearing again. I really need to back up

Hello,
This problem is rather difficult to diagnose without additional clues that would - fortunately - come from your system logs.
Try to look in your system logs (Console application) for lines starting like this:
.... kernel[0]: IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00::setPowerState (....) timed out after xxxxxx ms
Other questions:
- Are you external drives powered by the Mac or with their own power pack?
- Are you certain you didn't experienced "abnormalities" (spike, surge, drop-outs) in your house main?
If you do need your external drives to be up and mounted all the time - and they are on their own power supply - better to power them through an UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply).
This is one lead to investigate on. It may not be the answer.

Thierry

  • My external Seagate 4Tb drive keeps disappearing on my Windows 8.1 Toshbia X75 laptop

I have a new Toshiba X75 laptop running Windows 8.1 64 Bit. One of my external drives keeps disappearing on me and the only way that I know of to get it back is to reboot, and this is getting old real fast.
    I have 5 external hard drives; drive 1: 500Gb, USB 2.0 western digital, drive 2: 2TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 3: 3TB, USB 3.0 seagate, drive 4: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate, and drive 5: 4TB, USB 3.0 seagate. Drives 1, 2 & 5 are connected to a powered USB 2.0
7 port hub which is plugged into one of the laptop's 4 USB 3.0 ports; the othe two drives are plugged directly into two of the other three USB 3.0 ports on the laptop.
Drive 1 has done this once before and hasn't done it since. Drive 4 is the problem child although drive 5 has done this in the past too. Both drive 4 & 5 where purchased at the same time. At first I thought that drive 4's problem was the drive it self,
so I had it replaced, but it still is a problem child. When it was replaced they gave me a newer version of the drive too.
Is there a fix via Microsoft?
I have read that there might be some sort of a fix for the registry, but when it comes to playing with the registry, I tend to make sure that I know exactly what I'm doing before hand, and right now I don't know what to do in the regestry.
    Anyone have some great ideas?
And thanks ahead of time for the help.

This is probably the article that you were referring to with the registry fix:
"Help! After installing Windows 8.1, my USB drive disappears or file transfers
    stop unexpectedly..."
This article was updated to state that the registry workaround is no longer required, as the Update has a fix in it. However, you still might want to check the power settings and make sure 'suspend' is disabled.
    Hope this helps,

  • Hard Drives Keeps Disappearing Windows 8.1

I just recently upgraded to Win 8.1. I have 3 hdds. Win is installed on Samsung SSD. The other hdds is for software and for games. The gaming hard drive keeps disappearing. I have to restart the computer to get it show again in My Computers. Also I notice
sometimes when I restart my boot order keeps changing. I have to go into the bios and change the load order back to my SSD to the 1st priority. Can someone help with this issue?

    Hi wjason777,
OS related issue please consult on MS Answers http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows
Hardware related issue please contact your provider.
For your issue, when you reboot you can press F2 or F12 to load your boot menu. However, please notice the key depends on your hardware. It migth also be F5. So you may have to contact your computer provider about this issue.
If you can open that Boot menu. Please try search for boot order. Then you will be able to change the order.
By the way, if SSD keeps disappear, I think it is poor contact. I will recommend you contact your provider for more details.

  • Why does my Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive keep disappearing?

    Hi All,
Having major problems with a Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153160).  External drive contains Western Digital 2TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136891).  I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a 2012 Mac Mini.
Basically, I can plug-in or turn the drive on, it mounts fine. Can run a Time Machine Backup.  At some point (and I think it's when the computer goes to sleep), the drive hangs and I can no longer access it.  Time Machine will hang on "Looking for backup disk".  Drive will still appear in Finder, but I cannot "Eject" it.  I've also tried to do a "umount -f" on it from the Terminal.  Disk Utility still "sees" the device and the disk (partition?), but can't run a repair.
The only way I've found to fix this problem is to reboot the machine.  I've crawled through the System log, but I don't see anything that points to a problem.
What else can I check?  I'm have no idea if it's the hard drive, the external USB enclousure, Mac OS X, or the Mac Mini that's the problem.  Please let me know if there is more information I could provide to help solve this problem.  It's really frustrating!!!
    Thanks!
    -Ben

I received an answer from Thermaltake technical support. I asked if perhaps there was a firmware upgrade to prevent their drive from disappearing. They wrote on 22/04/2013:
Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service.
No firmware to do it. Just set system to never sleep. System will cut/disconnect the USB when it into sleep mode.
I wrote back saying I have never had to do that with other USB devices. And I routinely allow my system to Sleep. Is that an issue with their drive housings? They replied on 23/04/2013:
that is issue with sleep mode.
I don't know if this occurs with other USB 3.0 drives and Time Machine. Somehow, I doubt it. Anyway, it sounds as though my Thermaltake is destined for eBay...

  • Backup drive keeps rotating after shutting down the iMac

    Hi,
since I installed Leopard, my backup drive (LaCie USB) stays in operational mode after I shut down the iMac (intel 20").
When I choose to shut down the mac, the drive starts to rotate but doesn't stop... Under Tiger this wasn't an issue.
I think the problem is that Leopard doesn't "tell" the LaCie drive to go in sleep mode before the computer shuts down.
Does anyone experience the same problem and know what the solution is?
    regards, Martijn

Actually it does open but nothing shows up. I can't use my iMac unless I use the Safari browser and I want to use Firefox! I'm at my wits end as to how to fix this. I have tried everything that troubleshooting has suggested on Mozilla support. Help!!!!!!!!

  • Time mating drive keeps disappearing, why?

macbook pro, new, just bought two months ago.
had external drive, time machine worked great.
    upgraded to lion,
got time capsule 2TB, worked fine for a while,
now can't see the time capsile drive, but still got wi-fi,
    cant do backups.
networks are fine, just no drive is seen untill i reset power to time capsule,
then ok for an hour or so, then no drive again! weird!

Hi idnna, Firstly, where am I? I was still in bed when you posted that at 6.52 a.m. local time
Secondly, if you don't mind me saying, I think you're being a bit paranoid about your disk space. That does fluctuate depending on what you are doing. If you create a document & save it, it uses up a bit of space. If you put a CD in and save it to iTunes, it uses a bit of space. Picture? ditto. Received an email? Ditto. etc etc...
Plus, if you are surfing, your browser will be creating cache files & history files. If you are using Safari you can clear the cache and history. To clear the cache, with Safari open click on 'Safari'. Then click on 'Clear Cache' in the drop down menu. Give it the OK and you'll get some disk space back. To clear History, click 'History>Clear History', you'll get space back.
If you trash something and empty the trash, you get a bit of space back.
Then there are swap files. I'm not getting into that but Google it or put 'swap files' into Mac help from a finder window.
I'm a bit mystified about your Firewall message though, I've never seen that. It could be that you have selected 'Firewall logging'. To check, go to System Preferences>Sharing and click on the Firewall tab, then Advanced. The second box down enables FW logging. If that is ticked the firewall will create log files. More space. You can un-tick that if you want.
If you see Gb instead of points of Gb of space suddenly disappearing then worry. (if you haven't just loaded a few albums or a movie that is...) Otherwise, just chill and enjoy your iBook.
    Take care.
    Adrian
p.s. Your 'Home' folder is the one with the house icon in Finder. It's where everything that is yours gets put. DON"T CHANGE ITS NAME!!

  • Backup drive keeps remounting...

I have an external USB Iomega MiniMax HD that I use with SuperDuper! for backups of my mini. My problem is this: As I'm working on my mini, the Iomega drive will automatically mount and then a dialogue will appear mid-screen informing me that the Iomega was not unmounted and ejected properly -- even though I have, in fact, unmounted and ejected the drive properly. This keeps happening repeatedly, so it's disruptive and annoying. Short of switching the power off on the Iomega, is there a way to prevent the automount/warning routine from occurring?
    Message was edited by: dlclaytor

Well, I'll tell you what. I won a nifty little 500GB G-Drive portable USB drive in a Sundance Film Festival drawing, so I connected it to my mini via an unused USB port on the back of my Cinema Dispay. And I left my Iomega attached, but I turned it OFF. Then I made a bootable backup of my mini on the G-Drive. Now everything is fine. True, I didn't exhaustively trouble-shoot the Iomega problem (no time!), but neither my G-Drive nor my LaCie Drive are mounting unless I choose to mount them with the Disk Utility or reboot the mini. So, while I didn't "solve" the problem, I managed to fix it. One of these days I'll investigate the Iomega problem more thoroughly. Thanks again.

  • HELP! 2nd Hard drive keeps disappearing. Disk Utility can't see it either!

I'm hoping 1 of you experts can help me out with a very annoying problem.
November 17th I purchased a new hard drive for my Mac, Deskstar P7K500 500GB.
I checked on 2nd Chance PC if it was compatable etc, and this was the reccommendation for the size I wanted.
*For your info my Mac specs are:*
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac9,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 600 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.2f1
After installation I wanted to use Disk Utility to format it. It didn't see anything at all.
After an hour or so of PRAM reboots and anything else I could find online it appeared. I formatted it and all seemed well.
However last Monday, whenever I double clicked on the drive it seemed to take awhile before it opened. By yesterday afternoon I was getting the spinning wheel whenever I tried opening it.
So I decided to run Disk Utility on it to see if it needed permissions repaired. It didn't show up there at all. So I restarted and it disappeared from the desktop.
System Profiler saw it, but the text was corrupted, the words were gobbledygook in the drive description. So I figured I'd check with Disk Utility again. Still wasn't there. After rebooting it had completely disappeared from System Profiler all together.
So since Sunday I have been trawling forums and Apple help for suggestions. I've tried most things apart from messing with the Terminal stuff because I figured I'd mess that up LOL.
Are there any tricks you know I can try?
Or should I just send it back to Dabs as a faulty product?
Could it be my Mac? I can't send it to Apple as I bought it from a Apple reseller 2nd hand and didn't buy additional Apple Care.
I have data on it which is unfortunate but not life threatening as it was a new drive I backed up elsewhere also.
    Thanks
    BigSteve

    Hi-
"OEM" would be Original Equipment Manufacturer, which means the drive would have firmware specifically aimed at PC/Windows users.
The description of the drive specifiactions only states "PC" in compatibility, so I would assume the drive to be OEM, though not stated specifically.
The drive should work with the Mac, though it could be a firmware version problem, or, simply a problem with the drive. The Hitachi 7K drives are generally well regarded by Mac users.
In the past, any reported problems were either a firmware problem (typically early release models) or simply a bum drive.
BTW, the Hitachi site states that all their drives have the necessary Mac drivers in the firmware (along with the Windows drivers).
A test, would be to swap the drives in your Mac. Put #1 in #2 bay, and #2 in #1 bay. If the problem with "seeing" the drive stays with a particular bay, the Mac may be at fault. If the drive doesn't show regardless of bay, I would suspect the drive.

  • Folder from Network drive keeps disappearing in favorites sidebar

I have a couple of folders from our network drive that I have dragged into my favorites sidebar. However, every now and then they randomly disappear and I have to re create the shortcut in the sidebar again. Is this just a bug in the system? Does anyone have a similar problem and/or solution? Thanks!

I have this problem with some of my Mac's in our company.  We are on OS X 10.9.4 and it seams to happen mostly with AFP shares to a Mac Server.  But I have also seen it with SMB shares on Windows servers.

  • Why does my backup drive keep burning out?

I've burned out three backup hard drives within the last year and a half  The first was a Buffalo 500G, then a Toshiba 500G and then another Buffalo 500G.  The first backup was had its own power supply but the other two got their power from my Mac. Time Machine settings were all normal but I did notice the drive's light seemed to be on a lot when Time Machine was not backing up.  The power to my Mac and the drives is stable and relatively consistent.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there a solution for it?  Losing three drives in less than 18 months makes me think it's a Mac software issue as opposed to poor quality drives.  Thanks for any insight.

That drive is bus powered, as Klaus1 suggested ONLY use EHD's that have their own power supplies.
The drive I would recommend is:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MAU4S7500G16/
    OR
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEAQ7500GB16/
Of the two I prefer the latter.

  • Firewire drives keep disappearing

Since upgrading to 10.5.2, I have noticed some problems with my external Firewire drives.
I can be working on the computer and suddenly I will get a message about "Improper Device Removal" and both icons for my drive have gone from the desktop.
They are also gone from the Disk Utility. This is particularly frustrating as I can see no obvious cause for it. I can leave the computer for hours at a time and it's fine, other times I can be gone for a short while and they've vanished. They also vanish when they are in use, my iTunes library is on one of them for sharing.
It's starting to really annoy me, so can anyone help?
Other similar topics all seem to say that only the icons have gone and the drives are still available for use and show up in Disk Utility. I have to power mine off and on again to get them back.
    Thanks,
    Pete.

  • ICloud Drive keeps disappearing from sidebar!

Hi, every time i launch finder I have to go to the finder preferences and check the iCloud drive box!
    Any ideas why?
    Many thanks

    Hi..
    Might be corrupted Finder preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and select iCloud Drive.

  • Why do my external hard drives keep disappearing?

Hi, we have 3 external harddrives plugged into the the USB ports on the computer (not keyboard) they frequently dissappear and have to be unplugged and plugged back in to get them back. This has been happening when we only had one external and then with 2 externals or now with 3. Its not a huge deal but it does become frustrating on busy work days. Is there a fix for this?

  • WD My Book backup drive disappeared from desktop running Lion

WD My Book backup drive disappeared from desktop running Lion !0.7.5. Disk Utility recognized the drive and has repaired it, but it still does not show up on desktop or Time Machine. My Book also appears to hold zero data now (I've had it running backups for a couple of years). What's the problem? How to remedy?

I tried this but it did not help.  I did confirm that the external drive is working by connecting it to another IMac computer running Mavericks.  Not sure if the recent update to Yosemite that supposedly fixed issues with time machine has messed this up or not. Trying to work with WD as well to see which side the issues is on.   I remember a similar issue with Mavericks was updated making time machine unusable with the external drive.

  • My entire iTunes library keeps disappearing from my brand new iMac. All info transferred from external hard drive. Anybody have a clue? Thanks.

My wife copied our entire iTunes library from the old imac to the new using an external hard drive. Now, every so often, the whole library, music, apps and all, just keep disappearing from the new computer. When I turn on home sharing it all shows up, because we still have the old imac working. Really weird. Can anyone give me some insight? Much appreciated.

Through home sharing I have now copied the entire library to the new iMac. My problem now is with the individual music tracks doubling themselves. I delete them all and then a few days later all the doubles are back. Random tracks at random times, but they all come back!
