Backup woes

I have a script that is run by cron to do my backups.
Everything is fine except about 3/4 the ways through the backup it says error out of space even though there is 60gigs of space left and each backup is only 20. Anyone any ideas?
Ok the backup script tars everything in the /etc/* which should be everything then it uses hdiutil to create a blak sparse image disk drive of max size 25gig, it copies the data to teh disk image, unmounts it and then compresses it using gzip.
So any ideas why it says out of disk space when there is loads of space left?

You need to provide more details. How is the backup made? Using rsync? You can supply additional 'v' to get more info about process

  • Flickr Sync / Backup Woes

    Hi there,
I have a MBA 2013 256Gb, so whilst disk space isn't a daily issue, it can quickly become a worry when downloading a trip's worth of photos from my Canon DSLR (approx 10-20Mb per photo).
Typically I'll use the easy, built-in procedure for importing photos, organise them into albums and then upload them straight to my Flickr account, all from within iPhoto. I then use the iPhoto export wizard (which can be a little hit-and-miss) to export all of said photos in their original formats (both the RAW and JPG copies) onto my network attached storage box.
The problems start when having uploaded to Flickr and safely backed up to my NAS box, I want to delete the copies of the photos from my Macbook. As I found out the first time I tried, the moment you delete an album locally in iPhoto, it deletes the twin copy on Flickr (I appreciate there are already various threads that mention this).
I appreciate that Apple are trying to make things easy by syncing them left right and centre but surely my situation can't be that rare amongst all the MBA 128-256Gb owners out there. Can anybody recommend a solution that will still allow me to take advantage of the easy iPhoto to Flickr upload functionality as well as the ability to backup my photos elsewhere, whilst being able to delete the copies on my Macbook?
I'm pretty techy (manage software support for a living) though a bit of an Apple/iPhoto noob, so apologies if I've missed something obvious.
    Thanks in advance!

Simple: use a different uploader rather than the built-in one.
    I use Flickruppa
    http://flickruppa.com
    It just uploads, not syncs.
On an utterly unrelated point... why use iPhoto at all? It's a non-destructive processor and you're quite negating that by exporting the material and deleting it. Might be simpler to just not use the app at all.

  • Oracle 10g Backup Woes

My backup attempt totally messed up my system... can anyone shed any light?
Login to the EM as System / Normal.
    Maintenance -> Schedule Backup
    Select Customized Backup: Whole Database
    Backup Type: Full Backup
    All other options are unchecked.
Backup to Disk: Disk Backup Location e:\backup
    Set backup to start immediately.
It gives me a warning that this is an offline backup and that it will shut down the database. This is ok. The RMAN script that gets generated is:
    backup device type disk tag '%TAG' database include current controlfile;
I click Submit Job and it forwards me to the Status page.
So I wait and wait. I eventually give up and goto the main page of the EM and it asks me to login.
I try to login as System and it tells me:
The applicaiton requires more database privileges than you have currently been granted.
Any ideas? I can login via SQLPLUS as System but not into the Enterprise manager.

I am just following the steps in the oracle 2dayDBA documentation. It did not specify any user and I don't know any better.
My problem now is that I cannot login to the enterprise manager. Even as SYS as SYSDBA it tells me I have insufficient priviliges.
I have previously logged on with these usernames, but now I am locked out. Do you have any ideas?

  • ICloud Backup Woes

About a month after upgrading from my iPod Touch 3rd Generation to an iPhone 4s, I decided to try and figure out what I could do with my iPod Touch.  I went on to boot it up and, after erasing it, I did a restore from my iPhone's iCloud Backup so I could copy over my newer settings.  I neglected to charge my iPod before doing this, and about halfway through copying the settings in the iPod setup screen, my iPod died.  I plugged it in and repeated the process all over again and had no troubles on that end.  I later decided to back up my iPhone to iCloud manually.  I get an error message something along the lines of "Unable to backup iPhone because another device is restoring from this backup. Try again later."  My iPod was already finished backing up at that time.  After some troubleshooting of my own without any success, I decide to contact apple support (I have AppleCare+).  They told me to do a hard reset of both of the devices.  I had no luck there and by the time I called back, they had closed.  Now I'm here.
I am almost 100% percent certain this is an iCloud thing.  The devices are not the problem in my opinion.  I think that when my iPod died during the restore, it never went back to iCloud and said it was done restoring or that it had canceled.  I have tried deleting the backup from all of my devices (iPhone, Mac, iPod) all with the same error messages.  Any help on how to get my iPhone to back up again would be greatly predicated.
If it helps I'll say that all my devices, includong my Mac, are up to date with the latest software.  I don't jailbreak or anything like that.

Contacted Apple support.  Long story short, my problem is now waiting for an Apple engineer to fix sometime during normal business hours.
What actually happened is I called and talked to the front end agent and after I said I was a member of the iOS developer program on my other Apple ID, I was transferred to his supervisor.  After a length conversation, he transferred me to the iOS Development group.  They quickly pushed me to the iCloud Development Group.  We set up a test account and on the test account backups started working again.  I switched back to my real account and backups stopped working.  So the person concluded there was a problem in my account and that not even he had the means or authority to solve the problem.  He said that he sent my case number to an Apple Engineer, who happens to only be available during Monday to Friday business hours.  I have to wait awhile and I will see what happens from there in the coming days.

  • X201s Windows Backup woes

I set up the Windows Backup, but when I attempt to backup, I get a message that the backup did not complete successfully. A message appears that states: "Windows backup encountered a problem while determining additional locations of one of the users included in the backup. Details: the parameter is incorrect."  "Error Code: 0x8100038"
The options given are to retry and to change backup settings; I have done both to no avail. I am backing up to a Samsung G2 portable drive. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? The help files are not illuminating. Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums!
Microsoft has a resolution for this. But only use this method if you are comfortable on working with the registry.
    1. Login as the user
    2. Run -> regedit.exe
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Sofware\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
    4. Observe the value of Appdata and LocalAppdata.
If it has an empty value or a value of the type %Appdata%, this is the culprit.
If so, the workaround is the following:
        a. Open a command prompt
        b. Type set Appdata / LocalAppdata depending on which registry entry has the wrong value. If Appdata is wrong, type set Appdata and if Local Appdata is wrong, type set LocalAppdata.
        c. Copy the value after the = sign. Example if the output is: APPDATA=C:\Users\John\Appdata\Roaming, copy the value C:\Users\John\Appdata\Roaming
        d. Paste the value in the wrong registry value. Either replace the %<<<>>>% value or fill the empty value.
    Cheers and regards,

  • IPhone will not back up

Trying to update to iOS4 and it sits for about 30-40 minutes with the "backing up iphone" dialogue box open. The blue bar makes minimal progress and then says "unable to back up. Would you like to proceed w/ update?" I say yes and then nothing.
Have restarted computer and iPhone and tried updating again. No dice.
    Help.
    Many thanks.
    Frank

    I HAVE FIXED IT.
I was having this problem something SUPER awful. Like, 3 hour backups that would freeze at 5/6 of the way and not complete. I have a couple fixes for you.
    1. Clear out your camera roll. Import all your existing camera roll photos to iPhoto, then delete them off your phone. I had almost 900 photos on my phone.
    2. When you first plugged in your iPhone, you had some prompts you probably breezed through. One being a crash report prompt. I will include a guide on how to reverse that damage below.
    3. APPS!! The App Store on your phone is still buggy and unstable. Your apps are clogging your backups. Guide also to follow.
If you follow these guides to a T, the process will take you several hours. It took me about a whole day to fix it, but once you do, your backups will be significantly short. Like, where mine used to take 4 hours before halting entirely and not completing, they now take 30 seconds. Hooray!
2."I've seen many posts about backups taking no time at all, and some saying they are taking a long time. I know why some are fast and some are not, it's a setting you chose when you first set up your iphone which does not normally pop up again. Here is my step by step guide to undoing what most of you with slow backups did and making your backups take about 90 seconds on average.
That's right, the actual backup only takes 90 seconds (if you haven't installed anything new since your last sync), the thing that's making everyone's backup take an hour plus is that your sending your crash reports to apple everytime you backup and apples servers are so inundated that you're having to wait for the crash reports to upload and it's taking forever. This is an option that you clicked on your very first sync that you will now undo.
Plug your iphone in so it shows up under "devices" on the left side of itunes. If it starts to sync stop it right away by clicking the x (top middle of itunes). Then go to devices click your iphone so the middle window displays the iphone info and uncheck the "automatically sync when this iphone is connected" you'll find it under the summary tab of your iphone if you're not already there.
Then unplug and re-plug your phone back in.
Now when the phone shows up under devices right click on it and a context menu will pop up, go to the bottom of this list and select "reset warnings"
Now click sync and a warning window will pop up which you probably flew by the first time you set up your phone. It is the source of your backup woes. It is the one saying apple would like to get your crash reports. Also it will have checked by default "don't show this warning again" which is why you never got a chance to undo your mistake of clicking yes last time.
UNCHECK the don't show this again, you want to see this warning window everytime you plug your phone in because you'll always want to click "DO NOT ALLOW." If you want to see why the backup takes so long then click the button where it says to show you the reports. I'll bet if your backups are taking a while this folder is just chock full of crash reports. Go ahead and empty it.
Now everytime you plug your phone in just keep selecting DO NOT SEND THE INFO TO APPLE. (please note the window will only show up if there are crash reports to be sent, so if you empty the crash report folder above then you won't see the warning window again until a new report is generated) I'll bet your backups go way faster from now on.
Also note, if you have a butload of new apps that you installed on your last sync the next backup will indeed take several minutes since this is all new data. (Remember itunes does a backup first then an install incase any of the new apps cause a major problem you'll have a backup from before you installed them. But this means the next time you plug your phone in is the first time your backup will include any apps from the last sync). For example if you sync now and you get a 90 second backup but then you install Brain Challenge (an almost 100 meg app) the your next backup will probably go up to 5 or 10 minutes since none of this is in the last backup. But that's still a far cry less than what many of you have been experiencing."
    3. "Extraordinary long backups are caused by an error when an app (or apps) was installed or updated, particularly if you have ever installed or updated using the App Store on the device itself rather than iTunes. Even if you were never aware that there was a problem, they can arise and will cause problems with the backup process. Maybe you did have a problem during an update or install. Maybe the update stalled, or the App Store crashed. These issues are very likely what have been causing your long backups and you didn't even know it. During the backup process these errors cause it to drag and pause for a very long time before it gets moving again. From your view, you just see a normal backup that is taking hours, and undoubtedly annoying you to no end. On the inside, iTunes is trying desperately to get past a roadblock that it doesn't know where it came from.
This is how to fix the problem. This is not a quick fix, but it is an effective fix. And it is a FIX, not a band aid. Depending on how many apps you have installed, this can take several hours to complete. You will also lose all game scores and any other data stored in your apps. You will be starting fresh. It is an inconvenience, but in the end, you will be rewarded with quick, efficient backups, the way Apple intended. And you will never have to dread the
    iTunes backup again.
    The Process:
    1. Open iTunes, go to Edit>Preferences>Syncing and remove all previous backups. Also click "Disable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods"
    2. In your system file structure, locate the backup files for iTunes.
    On Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    On a Mac: Users/YOURACCOUNT/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
Delete ALL files and folders inside the Backup folder.
    3. Plug in iPod. On the Applications tab, uncheck sync apps. iTunes will ask if you want to remove the apps from the iPod, say yes. Click sync. This will remove all apps on your iPod, it will also backup the ipod. This backup will be very fast, and will recreate the backup folders you deleted in step 2.
    4. After the sync is complete, if there are any apps left on your ipod, touch and hold the icon until it starts to wiggle, then touch the X to delete the app. Delete all apps left on your ipod. Then sync again.
    5. After the sync is complete, disconnect the iPod and do a hard restart by holding down the sleep/power button until the slider appears, slide to power off. Wait 5 seconds and push the power button again and wait for the ipod to boot up.
    6. Connect your iPod again. Now begin adding apps back to your ipod one by one. On the Applications tab, click "Sync applications" AND "Selected applications". Make sure all apps are unchecked.
    7. Check one app and sync. After the sync is complete, right click on your ipod under Devices in the left column of iTunes. Click "Back Up" and allow the backup to complete.
    8. Repeat step 7 for each app you want to install. Keep the previous installed apps checked, just check one more app each time. Be sure to backup after each install. As you add more and more apps, the backup will take longer and longer as the process scans apps for changes. An initial backup can also be long for a particularly large application. However, ONLY the initial backup after you install an app will take a long time. Subsequent backups are very quick. Even these "long" backups are just minutes long, sometimes up to 15 minutes in my experience.
    9. When you are finished installing and backing up all apps, go to Edit>Preferences>Syncing and enable automatic syncing for all iPhones and iPods.
    10. Unplug and plug your device back in just for kicks. Let it back up and sync. Better?
    Notes:
The very first time an application is backed up, all critical data is written to your hard drive. This is why the backups are so long the first time. Afterward, only data changes are written, so backups are much shorter.
Backup times will continue to vary based on how many apps were altered since the last sync. If you've used one app since the last backup, your backup will be very short. If you've used 20 apps, the backup will be longer. But you will be rid of the dreaded hour (or more) long backup, that is a promise.
Now that your apps are installed and backing up correctly, the number one rule is to never, ever install or update apps through the App Store on the iPod. ONLY install and update through iTunes, and backup after every install or update. The App Store on the iPod is still unstable and can cause lock ups, crashes and freezes. And it is the culprit in these long backup times. Avoid it until the bugs are ironed out.
Also, do not be tempted to disable backups using programs or code edits available online. Your backups are crucial in the event of a restore. Backups contain all of your personal data like game scores, notes, icon arrangement, application data, etc. And it's not a matter of if you'll have to restore one day, it's when, and you'll be glad you have a backup when you do."

  • Woes of the Z10, and now i want to use it as a backup phone for my contacts and data. Can I?

Ok, this has been a real nightmare. I am an extensive user of BB since OS4. Wanted to try the new Z10, so I got myself a spanking new one. With my prior experience in switching devices, it would be a cinch. Transfer device over via blackberry desktop software, change the emails via BIS, and I'm all sorted out.
OMG dear blackberry. You made me jump through so many hoops I felt like a circus dog.
Blacberry desktop doesn't work with the Z10. No one told me. I had to find out the hard way after not being able to detect the phone. wasted half an hour of my life. Downloaded Blackberry link. Transferred my contacts and everything over, couldn't be happier.
Hurrah, thought the nightmare was done. It was just starting.
Micro sim. Not everyone has a microsim cutter lying around. Great. Troop off to the shop. Figured after I get the sim cut, I could also transfer the emails via BIS server. So that's what I did. (oh by the way, having to buy a micro SD card was also a pain in the A but still acceptable). The BIS server detected the change in device so it disabled my emails. No problem. Until the technician told me at the store-sorry-BIS DOESNT WORK WITH Z10. Whaaaaat? Come on blackberry! Now its just normal emails, similar to that of iphone and samsung. Emails were your best feature. Ok, this I can stomach. What I cannot stomach is...blackberrry, you just killed your frequent traveller who needs international roaming. BIS emails and BBM was wonderful. I could get by travelling from country to country on 50mb a month unlimited. Apparently not anymore. I need a full fledged international roaming plan that will cost me an arm and a leg. This is insane.
Finally I had the Z10 working. I manually entered all my emails. ( i have 9 emails. Thank god they are all gmail based, especially for work, if not I would have ripped all my hair out). For the whole 2 hours, I looked at it and hated it. It was hard to use, I had to keep swiping up and to the right, sometimes it wouldn't swipe well, sometimes I couldn't tell if it was swiping or not. Neither did it help that Whatsapp hasn't even been sorted out on the Z10. Whatsapp is my life. My family's on it. My friends are on it. My suppliers and my customers are on it. Oh wait. Z10-well, you can download it from the appworld, but it doesn't install. Thinking it was a problem with the downloads, I kept at it..only to have the technician tell me, "sorry, Whatsapp not working on Z10, too bad"...anyway I made up my mind to go back to the Torch. So thinking it would be as simple as changing the hub ID on the Z10 and then reactivating the Torch. All will be well. Wrong.
I had to run to another tel shop to beg for a spare sim shell so I could stick the micro sim into it and have it back as a normal sim. Another 2 hours of my life later, I realise-changing the hub ID on the Z10 doesn't change anything. It doesn't mean you can just use the original hub Id and all systems are go on the first phone. Changing the hub ID means changing the original one. Argh. This was so frustrating especially when the BIS server refused to switch back to the old device. Ever clicked on detect device 200 times? Well that would be me. Eventually I figured it out. Change back to the old hub ID, security wipe the horrible thing, log in with the original hub ID and reset the device via BIS server. Finally, order is restored.
Which leads me to my question. I am thinking of porting over my contact list and data to the Z10, and using it as another phone in another country. However I want to use a different Id from my Torch since it is considered a different device but with the same data. Will blackberry link allow me to do this, or will it only switch the data provided the hub ID is the same?
Blackberry, hand over heart, I'll use the Torch till it dies ( I just changed out the nav pad cause it was completely worn out and would act wonky in sunlight- I call it the blackberry vampire version) and after that I'm off to another smart phone platform. You've made my life miserable. It was great while it lasted, but I'm going to be migrating to another platform eventually. Thanks for the memories.

    Hello,
BlackBerry 10 has always been advertised as a revolutionary change from prior...not an evolution. And you have both now learned the hard way just how detailed that change is. As with so many things, the assumptions made from past experience with BB are not useful for this very significant change. Rather, research done prior to purchase is the most useful activity one can undertake.
For BB10, BIS is not required. Indeed, on some carriers, having BIS on the account actually impedes some services for BB10. BB10 uses a full on-device ActiveSync client for email now. BIS-handled email is gone...as are "hosted" email accounts (though you can get 1-year of forwarding).
Migrating of data from old to new involves many choices before beginning. For example, if you are not afraid of placing your Calendar and Contact data "into the cloud", the Z10 can excellently synchronize that against many different providers (many more than BIS ever could). Done correctly, one can attain full end-to-end OTA synchronization of Calendar/Contact data between Outlook desktop client (and perhaps others, though I've not tested), a Z10, a PlayBook, and more (for me, I've got 2 Outlook client instances, one Z10, one PB, and one Droid...all working beautifully OTA).
Traveling is no more challenging than in the past...your specific device must be able to function on the networks upon which you wish to roam...this is no different from before (e.g., a GSM-only device simply cannot roam on a CDMA network). To compare specifics, I've found this useful:
    http://www.bbin.in/en/2013/03/03/4-types-blackberry-z10-models-fits-better/?utm_campaign=4-types-of-...
There are many other differences...but please try to let go of what was before, for pretty much none of it applies anymore. BB10 is revolutionarily different from before.
    Good luck!

  • USB External Drive Backup & Erase Woes

I have been using a Lacie 500GB USB external drive allocated as a backup disk for time machine. Over the last couple of weeks, the disk has been spontaneously ejecting itself from the desktop. This could happen when not backing up to time machine, or during the backup.
I am not a daily time machine backup-er, as I don't have much to backup on a daily basis (and I weekly backup to an alternative disk using Super Duper). What I had noticed with the time machine disk, is that the preparation prior to the backup beginning was a massive 40+GB, certainly not the amount of data which would have been 'new'.
To try to resolve this, I have used disk utility to verify the disk, and the snow leopard disc to check my boot disk on the Macbook Pro... there has not been a problem identified with either.
Today, I decided to erase the time machine disk, zero the data, and re-allocate the drive for time machine backup. After setting these preferences in disk utility, and clicking 'erase', the disk again erased itself, with the error message :
'Disk erase failed with the error: Assert: internal error, or unimplemented'
I then had an external disk which was not present on the desktop, and apparently in some sort of limbo between erased and mounted!
I was able to do a simpler format function on the disk via disk utility, the disk will mount, but the allocated disk space previously used by time machine is still present, and the format has only done that remaining space on the disk.
Anyone know what the above error message refers to, am I able to reformat the disk using the 'zero function', or has the disk failed and become unrecoverable?
    Answers / suggestions kindly welcomed.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you use Disk Utility to erase totally you need to click on the LaCie drive name not the name that appears on the desktop. Select how many partitions you want and give each partition the name you want it to have and perhaps also the partitioning scheme and other options that are available, then erase.
Doing this will of course make all that is on the drive unavailable to you.
These are LaCie's directions for their drives.
Some LaCie drives might also have firmware updates available - worth a check on their website.
Note that LaCie seem to have 2 yr warranty on their drives, at least the one I looked at on their website. If the drive is younger than this you might have a warranty claim.

  • FCP Backup Project Questions

    Hi Everyone,
Say I had several questions and was hoping another FCP user could answer them for me.
I recently had a hard drive fail that housed all of the captured video for a project that was complete, but had not yet been exported out. A real bummer.
I did not worry about it too much since it was only the captured video and audio and thought all I needed to do was just go in, select the offline files and recapture the footage. Boy was I wrong.
This had been my backup philosophy thus far, backup my project files, graphics, music, etc etc and dump all of the captured video and audio on the project, since I had the original tapes. If I needed to go back into the project I could just recapture. I developed this from other users suggestions from here.
Well on this project, when the hard drive crashed, since I had all the same files I would normally backup I assumed it would be the same deal. I have never had to go back to a backup project so I had not tested this before.
When I attempt to batch capture the original footage, some captures fine, while others come up prompting me to change a file name because one already exists and even on stuff that will recapture, it comes up saying it cannot be reconnected because the capture footage does not match. Sigh. I am puzzled by these messages since, the settings for the recapture are the same, and the file cannot exist since ALL the footage is gone.
So what I am faced with now is confusion over what is a good, solid way to backup ones projects. Am I doing something wrong when setting projects up that cause them to be such a headache to recover? Many of the projects I do are using a 24p Adavanced setting. Sometimes I remove the advanced pulldown when capturing, sometimes after I have captured. My setups, for the most part, are normally the same.
Can I start a dialogue with some fellow editors out there who have some experience here? I am real curious to know what works for you and any thoughts on what could be causing my current woes.
    Thanks so much!

Ok, well here is where I am at:
I performed the XML export as suggested, but ran into the same issues. Let me give a more detailed description of the issues.
After the hard drive crashed and I lost all my captured video and audio, I replaced the drive and named it the same as the previous one.
So when I went back into my project, the normal message pops up that items are offline, etc. I hit continue past this and tried to batch capture the footage again. On several clips FCP (version 5.0.4) would come back reporting that there was a Duplicate Item Name and try to force me to rename it or skip (Why does it not give an option to overwrite??). Now in the bin there is only 1 clip with the name, so I am assuming it is picking up on something else. On other clips, it does not prompt this, but when I have finished recapturing (mind you I have left the box checked to use the logged settings) it comes back to report that the clip cannot be reconnected because the beginning or end times are different, etc, etc.
So per the great suggestions on here I exported (with the Source showing in browser) the whole thing to XML and then imported it into a new project. Same problems as before. So I looked through the Source in the browser and noticed some stated they were offline, while others stated they were on the old crashed drive. So I set them all to be offline and told it to delete the files from the hard drive.
Again I have tried to recapture to no avail.
I am now attempting to blow out the hard drive and wipe it clean, then rename it to see if I can get FCP to recapture the darn footage.
Does anyone else have any suggestions??
And furthermore, what is the best method to backing up a project?? Should I go through and take all the clips offline in FCP, deleting the footage and then as I have been doing, save the project file, graphics, etc, etc. Basically, how do I get FCP to recapture stuff if I ever have such a problem or need to go back into a backed up project again??
    Thanks ALL!

  • Pictures Backup Methods?

What methods do you use to backup your work while you are on the road?  (Computer and WiFi is NOT available)  Do you use a secondary cards in your camera?  Thanks!

    Hey Chris,
Sorry to hear of your woes. I too have the 1stGen MB and have had it repaired twice(RSD). Both in the summer of '06. It has since been fantastic.
One thing comes to mind though with your isses and that is ... How much RAM are you running? Without enough RAM and using RAM intensive apps, you can really run a HDD into the ground. Apple has strived to make these small and thin which tends to get things a little squished in these confines. If you are running MAX RAM then I guess my point is moot and you just use your MB harder than I do.
Hope things get better for you and your MB.

  • Online storage/backup and Sync to several systems  - Elements 10

I have paid my money and eagerly await arrival of Elements 10 with the postman
I was enthused to buy it for some of the editing features which are better than v7 i had.
I was even more excited to know all my woes and hates of Google Picasa online storage and syncing were going away!!!!!
    Or so I thought
I had not realised that as I work for an American company I was reading the American website and for some unfair reason they get options to buy more than 2gb storage and they get syncing of online to various PCs and backups and goodness knows what else; while we non-US poor souls in the wastelands get what seems like almost nothing
I know I can't use my 80gbs of Google Space. I have 50Gb on Box.Net that was free because I bought a HP Touchpad (long live WebOS as its awesome compared to the rubbish that is Android my new company phone runs).... sorry I'm digressing...... the Box.Net doesn't have any syncing and i know nothing of its security, but maybe its an option.
    So, I can't be the only working father in the world who wants;
to use his company laptop as the onboarding for all the cameras
then to seemlessly have a secure backup made somewhere in the cloud  and possibly to my 2TB NAS as well?
or  a copy of everything uploaded to online web album but as full size photos (one good thing about Google) which would replace the Backup need maybe?
now the tricky bit, I then want my wifes PC and 2 others used by my children to be able to view (not edit or delete) all our photos, probably the online set synced to their PCs
then i want to be able to see them also from the touchpad
finally I want to be able to 'share' some albums/photos to the rellies and Facebook
As my wife would say "surely it's not to much to ask that this stuff just does what we want?"
How does everyone else cope if we are hoest that I am hopeless as manual backups etc.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
ps. i had thought to try registering my new software with a new email address and giving US address etc.......... would that get me the extras/

Ah... as per my 1st post, I am a new user to Elements.    Apologies,  I have been approaching this from the wrong direction!   I have checked back on my original XP disk and Elements catalog, and it appears that when I set up the original catalog against my existing pics it did not include any duplicate files, therefore the Backup\Restore is correct, it is the original cataloging of my pictures that did not work as expected.     Do I have to do anything specific to get the catalog to include duplicate file names?
    Sorry for the misdirection
    Steve
    Steve,
The basic rule of database management is to forbid duplicates.
In the case of the Organizer, that would mean changing one of the two above criteria (date daken or file size in kB). That would be possible outside of the Organizer by using external tools, but the problem is that you don't know which files are concerned...
Now that you have restored your catalog in your new catalog, a theoretical solution would be to get back to the old catalog, and use the organizer to delete all the files in the catalog. The remaining ones would be the duplicates. Creating a new empy catalog and importing the remaining files would recover all duplicates. You could then restore on the new PC.
    There are still two problems:
    - You can't delete a big number of files at the same time? You'd have to delete by small batches
    - You'll have all your duplicates in your new PC, but you still won't be able to include them in the main catalog even you have now a special catalog with only the duplicates.
So, the final question may be : why do you want to keep duplicates? You can examine the duplicates catalog and see if they are really necessary. Maybe you can live with two different catalogs.

  • Stuck on looking for backup

    Hi,
Posted a little while back on here with my TC woes. Long story short, I went to apple and they swapped it out for a new one. Three days later, it is falling over again. I have a Macbook air 2011 running the latest OS and an iMac also running the latest OS. Timecapsule was updated to the latest firmware. I have pulled all the connections out the back bar my apple tv incase that was causing a problem but it hasn't fixed it. Just gets stuck on looking for backup for hours on end before informing me that backup failed. As with previous time capsule, the only way to fix this is to do a power cycle on the TC and it will then work for a few hours again before falling over.
I really am at my wits end with this. There is no reason that on a three day old TC I should be having these issues surely!? I have tried the suggestions on here with regards to having a short name for it with no spaces (MikeTC) but to no avail. I can hear it spinning up in front of me now. If I click backup now, the discs will spin up and the TC will come to life, but it cannot make a backup. I don't know if I have a file somewhere in the depths of my macbook that is preventing things from working, but it is driving me crazy!
I've made a short 2 mins video of my issue that I have sent to the repair shop and am awaiting their input, but if anyone has a bit of time spare to send some suggestions my way I would appreciate it.

    Thanks,

So, the answer to the question was that TC lasted until 2000 tonight when I got back in, turned the laptop back on and got the backup failed message. It's now stuck on looking for backup disc again and so on for the next however many hours until it gives up. I have included a netstat again from a couple of minutes ago incase it throws any light on the subject. It seems to be at the moment that when the laptop goes to sleep, when you wake it up again it will fall over. I don't switch my laptop off, just let it go to sleep. This seems to be what causes the thing to fall over - it cannot handle the laptop dozing off!
I am wondering if moving the TC upstairs and plugging it into my iMac via ethernet might help? Would the TC be able to run wirelessly like this - i.e. not plugged into my router via ethernet, or does it require an ethernet connection to work? My thinking is that by having it ethernet cabled directly into the iMac, it would surely not be able to lose where the disc was, although maybe I would still have the same problems with my laptop backing up?

  • Restoring From Backup? Can't!

I am not really sure as to where I should post this thread because it is quite a mixed topic. I recently updated to the iOS 4 on my iPhone 3GS 32GB, i first deleted everything of it and then wanted to restore from backup after the update. Update all worked fine until I realised I could not even choose a backup?! iTunes had skipped the step and had gone straight to naming my iPhone. So i restored again, but this time I watched iTunes. Oh right a message come up (from windows) saying 'MobileSyncHelper' has stopped working. How am I going to restore from backup now?! I have tried reinstalling iTunes and the Mobile Device program. Many thanks in advance.
    Mike

    Thanks for the reply.
After much sleuthing and searching finally found it here:

And less than 12 hours later TUAW also posted on their site here:

  • Can not see historical data in Time Machine backup

    Hi folks
    First my setup:
       MBP Late2012
       Samsung Evo 840 SSD
external USB 3.0 1TB as TimeMachine HD
       Mac OS X Mavericks
    Now my problem.
After updating to Mavericks I've made a full backup with Time Machine.
Then I swapped the former 500TB HDD to the Samsung Evo 840 500TB.
A clean setup of Mavericks follows.
After that I restored the Backup from Time Machine.
    Everything ok. Til now.
Because everthing works fine in the past, I did not control the Time Machine.
Today I wanna restore a File from my "Pictures" folder.
    So I opened Time Machine.
    Oops.
There I can only see the latest run.
Also in the timeline on the right side the only entries are TODAY and NOW.
I can not scroll into the past.
All windows behind the current window have a black titlebar.
In Mountain lion the titlebars are grey if there is data available
and the title contains the date of the backup.
    What is the problem?
    Is there a bug?
    Did I something wrong?
    Thanx in adv.

    Hi masong517
What a treasure trove of hints and solutions.
    I didn't know this page.
But  you are right with "E2".
    This solved my problem.
    Thank you very much.

  • Creating a backup of functional drive removed from broken laptop

I have a new Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion that is damaged and won't turn on. I have the drive removed and can access it using a docking station attached to my iMac running 10.6.
What is the simplest way to backup the data from this drive so that after the laptop is repaired I can return my data to the Macbook Pro?

Using Disk Utility to clone a drive will automatically erase the Destination drive if it isn't already erased. To backup to a drive with stuff already on it you would need to use a backup utility like one of these:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Be sure the backup utility is NOT configured to erase all files on the destination that are not on the source. If there are files identical to those already on the drive, then they will be overwritten.
