Bad character set in dump file?

(Sorry for re-posting this question; posting in in the "Globalization" section was apparently a bad idea as nobody replied.)
Hi,
IMPDP-ing a dump file that someone has handed me over into Oracle XE results in special characters, i.e. Umlauts, being messed up.
In a hex editor, the dump file shows
a) the token WE8MSWIN1252 near the beginning, but
b) Umlauts obviously being encoded in DOS 850, for example "König" is encoded as 4b 94(!) 6e 69 67.
Does this prove that the dump file is badly formatted and that I have to resign myself to the complicated approach mentioned at the end of <https://forums.oracle.com/message/4142008#4142008>?
TIA

Is this necessary to judge whether the dump file is consistent? But ok, here we go:
OS: Win XP
database versions: see log files
export command: see log file (further details, if any, unknown)
import command: impdp with parameter file
dumpfile=ddd.dmp

  • Database character set = UTF-8, but mismatch error on XML file upload

    Dear experts,
    I am having problems trying to upload an XML file into an XMLType table. The Database is 9.2.0.5.0, with the character set details:
    SELECT *
    FROM SYS.PROPS$
    WHERE name like '%CHA%';
    Query results:
    NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET          UTF8     NCHAR Character set
    NLS_SAVED_NCHAR_CS          UTF8
    NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS          .,     Numeric characters
    NLS_CHARACTERSET          UTF8     Character set
    NLS_NCHAR_CONV_EXCP          FALSE     NLS conversion exception
    To upload the XML file into the XMLType table, I am using the command:
    insert into XMLTABLE
    values(xmltype(getClobDocument('ServiceRequest.xml','UTF8')));
    However, I get the error:
    ORA-31011: XML parsing failed
    ORA-19202: Error occurred in XML processing
    LPX-00200: could not convert from encoding UTF-8 to UCS2
    Error at line 1
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.XMLTYPE", line 0
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    Why does it mention UCS2, as can't see that on the Database character set?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Mark

    USC2 is known as AL16UTF16(LE/BE) by Oracle...
    Try using AL32UTF8 as the character set name
    AFAIK The main difference between Oracle's UTF8 and AL32UTF8 character set is that is the UTF8 character set does not support those UTF-8 characteres that require 4 bytes..

  • Reading in Latin Extended-A character set from a text file

    Hello all,
    I am writing a small program that reads in a text file containing special characters (beyond the ASCII char set) and converting it into "regular" characters. For example I would read in a uaccent and replace it with a u.
    Now I realize that Unicode support is built into Java from ground up but it goes only so far, you actually have to have the relevant character set to read it. My code is as follows:
    InputStreamReader inStreamReader = new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream("input.txt"), "ISO-8859-1");
    BufferedReader bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(inStreamReader);
    String line = null;
    StringBuffer buff = new StringBuffer();
    while((line = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null) {
    char[] charArray = line.toCharArray();
    for(int i = 0; i < charArray.length; i++) {
    int x = (int)charArray;
    switch(x) {
    case 224: // this is agrave .. we need to replace it with a
    buff.append('a');
    break;
    case 230: // this is aelig .. we need to replace it with ae
    buff.append("ae");
    break;
    ///////// and so on
    Since I am reading in as ISO-8859-1, this works up to unicode 255. For the rest of the characters, apparently I need a Latin Extended-A and Latin Extended-B character set. How can I get that installed on my Windows OS machine? I am using jdk 1.4.1 on Windows XP. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

It sounds like you it actually may be Unicode text, in which case you need to know which encoding (UTF8, UTF16, etc) was used.

  • Flat File Load Issue - Cannot convert character sets for one or more charac

    We have recently upgraded our production BW system to SPS 17 (BW SP19)
    and we have issues loading flat files (contain Chinese, Japanese and
    Korean characters) which worked fine before the upgrade. The Asian
    languages appear as invalid characters (garbled) as we can see in PSA. The Character Set
    Settings was previously set as Default Setting and it worked fine until
    the upgrade abd we referred to note 1130965 and with the code page 1100
    the load went through (without the Cannot convert character sets for one or more characters error) however the Asian language characters will appear
    as invalid characters. We tried all the code pages suggested in the note e.g.
    4102, 4103 etc on the info packages but it did not work. Note that the
    flat files are encoded in UTF-8.

    I checked lower case option for all IO
    When i checked the PSA failed log no of records processed is "0 of 0" my question is with out processing single record system is througing this error message.
    When i use same file loading from local workstation no error message
    I am thinking when  I FTP the file from AS/400 to BI Application Server(Linex) some invalid characters are adding but how can we track that invalid char?
    Gurus please share your thoughts on this I will assign full points.
    Thanks,

  • Changing the character set in RoboHelp 7 file converted from 5

    The character set of the output files for WinHelp defaults to
    utf-8. How can the default be set to windows-1252 per project or
    for all projects in RoboHelp 7?

    This is related to the posting - "RoboHelp 7 (with patch) IE6
    does not display popup field definitions". Somewhere in our
    environment the character set is getting changed to western
    european (ISO) for the pages that do not load initially in IE6/XP
    from the OAS even though the code generated by RoboHelp is utf-8.
    The WebHelp generated in RoboHelp v5 has a characterset of
    windows-1252. None of the pages with the character set of
    windows-1252 have a problem loading (or changing the character
    set). The problem may be on the OAS or the single signon
    layer.

  • Write XML to file - character set problem

    I have a package that generates XML from relational data using SQLX. I want to write the resulting XML to the unix file system. I can do this with the following code :
    DECLARE
    v_xml xmltype;
    doc dbms_xmldom.DOMDocument;
    BEGIN
    v_xml := create_my_xml; -- returns an XMLType value
    doc := dbms_xmldom.newDOMDocument(v_xml);
    dbms_xmldom.writeToFILE(doc, '/mydirectory/myfile.xml');
    END;
    This creates the file but characters such å,ä and ö are getting 'corrupted' and the resultant xml is invalid.(I've checked the xml within SQL*Plus and the characters are OK)
    I assume the character set of the unix operating system doesn't support these characters. How can I overcome this ?

    Hi,
    Do you mean that you would like to write output to an external file somewhere on flask disk or perhaps even inside the directory where the MIDlet is located?? To be able to do so you will need manufacturere specific APIs extended on FileConnection (=JSR, don't know the number right now...). The default MIDP I/O libary does not support direct action on a file.
    However, such a FileConnection method invocation requires an import statement that is manufacturere specifc...
    To keep your MIDlet CLDC MIDP compliant you can try using RMS with which you can write data that will be stored in a 'database' within the 'res' directory inside your MIDlet suite. If you're new to RMS, please check the web for tutorials, etc etc.
    Cheers for now,
    Jasper

  • XML as target file - how can i change its character set?

    Hi all,
    i need to create my target as XML-file und to save all my information there, but with other character set (not with default). In other words i must have in XML-file in header
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-15"?>.
    Now i have
    <?xml version="1.0"?>.
    What can i do?
    Thanks in advance.

    I don't think Finder does this (I've tried).
    iTunes does though. Where you can set artwork or the "poster frame"...
    This may not be what you want but if it helps, I know 2 ways  do this is
    Open the video in QuicktimePlayer7 | View | Set Poster Frame (even then, you might need to save it as .mov (ie in a 'mov container').
    Drag the file into iTunes and set the artwork (as in http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/adding-album-cover-art-or-images-in-itunes .html)
    From there, iTunes will use that frame as the "poster frame" ie the photo/frame that shows when you browse your videos. Which is what you want, but limited to iTunes.
    When I do either of these above, the frame I set does not show when exploring files in "Finder" (or in the other Explorer tool I use called "Pathfinder").
    So it maybe, that exactly what you want, is not possible.

  • What Determines the "File Character Set" on Export?

    When we Export a Page, for example, from APEX, the File Character Set is defaulted to some value (and not editable). On some of our instances, this defaults to "Western European Windows 1252" while on others it is "Unicode UTF-8." Specifically, what setting is being used to make this determination? This is kind of a pain because we have some environments wherein we are promoting changes from environment to environment and these settings differ. If, during import, the user neglects to set this to the same File Character Set in which the file was originally exported, we get issues (non-printable control characters and the like). Therefore, we'd love to make all of the environments match but, aren't sure how to do this.
    Thanks,
    -Joe
    Edited by: Joe Upshaw on Apr 10, 2013 3:25 PM

    Hello Joe,
    In your environment, the character set of the APEX exported files is set according to the DAD character set, and with your APEX version, it must be set to AL32UTF8 (regardless of the database character set).
    Re: Export - File Character Set list is read only (fixe UTF-8 value)
    You should check the DAD character set setting in the environments in which APEX is not exporting the files using UTF8.

  • Export - File Character Set list is empty

    Running version 1.6.1.00.02 on Oracle 10g. We are having problems moving a particular application into our production environment. Getting a parsing error. Doing some research - noticed that others have experienced similar issues - some threads have suggested making sure that the character set choices between export and import are the same. I've noticed that whenever we import, we must pick the character set. However, when exporting, the File Character Set list is empty - actually there's no type of drop down control present. Is this an issue?

  • Retrain OCR in LabVIEW (retrieve indexes of found characters within the character set file)

    Dear all,
    I am trying to retrain my OCR set file in LabVIEW. Basically I show the read string to the user and in case something is wrong the respective character must be corrected in the charatcer set file, according to the text entered by the user. It sounds quite straightforward, but I haven´t manage to figure out how to retrieve the character index in the file has to be retrained. For that I would need know which character in the set file was found to resemble a give read character. Do you know how can I retrieve this info? I intent to use the OCR Rename Character VI.
    Best regards,
    Esteban

    Go to Solution.

    Hello Arroyo,
    you can retrieve the total number of trained characters by using the IMAQ OCR Property VI and looking for the property "Size of char set".
