Bad RAM in MacBook Pro
Hello everyone, I have been experiencing random crashes on my Early 2011 i5 16GB MacBook Pro 13". At first I thought of a stability issue with mavericks (10.9.4), but after remembering something that I went through a couple, of years ago, I think it's different. Let me explain. A couple of years ago, I had installed 8 GB from a company called Transcend. After experiencing issues (I don't remember exactly what), I got my machine checked by apple, and they found the problem to be bad ram.
Now, I am experiencing crashes with Serato DJ (I can reproduce the crash every time), and a friend told me it could be bad ram. Given that I have had bad ram before, could my computer be making the ram modules go bad? What I find weird, is that I have done a clean install, and the issue persists, yet on my brothers i5 2.5GHz 2012 MBP, it seems impossible to get Serato DJ to crash.
I Currently have rember running, and I will post the results as soon as I get the chance. What I will also do, is reinstall the 4GB that shipped with my MBP to see if that resolves any issues.
Thanks a llot in advance, everyone, your help is very much appreciated.
Rember came back with no errors.

Installing 8GB ram on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010)

When you install RAM, reboot your computer with the "D" key held down (or the Option-D keys). These will load the Apple Hardware Tests.
With these tests open, check the box for the extended memory test, and then start the test. This will have the system thoroughly test the RAM for errors.
In your case, it appears you may have a bad set of RAM modules, but you can check them using the method above.
When you have them paired with your original RAM, how much memory does the system report as being available when you select About This Mac in the Apple menu? If you are using Lion or Mountain Lion, then in this panel click "More Info" and then select the "Memory" section, and see what the system reports as being installed.
Is this RAM test necessay with every upgrade of memory or just if you have problems after the upgrade

Is battery life a factor in your decision? If so, knowing that may help someone else give you some more input. -
From research on different communities, I have read that Adobe flash player will cause my macbook to overheat, and a bunch of other rumors. is there any proof or truth that Adobe flash player is bad for my macbook pro? I installed it a couple hours ago and so far nothing has happened but im worried about the future.

That might have been true for the 13" Intel HD 3000 graphics models, but the newer machines with Intel HD 4000 have a bit more kick in the CPU graphics.
and a bunch of other rumors. is there any proof or truth that Adobe flash player is bad for my macbook pro?
No it's not bad, it's just that the late Steve Jobs came out publicly against Flash because it couldn't run on the new low performance devices like iPads and iPhones that he was serving up.
So a lot of young people took it as a mission to kill Flash and bad mouth it to death.
What you do have to do, like you need to do with any browser plug-in or software, is be careful from where you install it from as there are many websites that will try to trick one into installing a fake one.
Many people thus tricked into installing a trojan immediately blame Flash as the cause, when it's not.
Also you have to keep it updated, but using a browser like Chrome will do it for you and Firefox will not let you run outdated web browser plugins.
Safari also blocks outdated plugins, but Apple is very slow to issue updates so it's almost worthless.
How to install/uninstall Flash, fix problems -

Is it bad for the MacBook Pro to play World of Warcraft?
Is it bad for the MacBook Pro to play World of Warcraft?
There will just be a little more wear and tear than "normal" use, because the heat goes way up and the fans max out while playing, as with most gaming. I guess that affects the overall lifespan of the laptop.
I played all the time on my MBP early 2008, and still play on my 2011 MBP. The '08's fans had to be replaced but still works fine. -
4GB RAM on MacBook Pro 15 ?
I can put 4GB Ram on MacBook Pro 15 even if Activity Monitor and other similar applications will reveal that only 3 GB of SDRAM has been addressed for use by the computer ? you see apple doc : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304662
I would want put 4GB Ram on my new MBP.
TY, Max Vigilanteactually it's true. it's not the motherboard, it's the intel chipset. there was an interview with a tech spokesperson from apple about this on anandtech I believe.
while you can physically put 4GB into the slots, the intel chipset will only be able to address slightly more than 3GB of it. apple made the decision to be reasonable about this and state that the max RAM for these machines is 3GB so that customers are not wasting their money on buying 4GB. other manufacturers are either not being so honest about it, or they haven't even bothered to pay any attention to the intel spec on the core 2 duo chipset. if your dell is reporting that it actually has the full 4GB (and it is indeed a core 2 duo machine) then it's just giving you a reading of what chips are installed, nothing more. any system profiling app that can really look into what amount of RAM is actually addressable will show that the full real amount is less than 3.7GB (or less than that I can't remember). the information is all there at intel if you want to go get it from the horse's mouth.
there is absolutely nothing about OSX that limits it to less than 4GB. it makes no sense to assume that.. the OSX installed on MBPs is identical to the OSX on other machines like mac pros, which can support well and truly more than 4GB RAM as there is no chipset limitation in the xeons.
anyway as I said, this info is all out there in the public domain, you can even email support at intel and ask them to explain exactly why the core 2 duo chipset (in any machine, mac or PC or otherwise) has this RAM limitation. -
Hi Everyone I was searchinig for ram for MacBook Pro. I came accross this in the apple store online under ram - 15/17inch ram upgrade for macbook pro.

Or for the budget minded there is the somewhat cheaper pairs at $3039.00

I would say for now that unless your a wealthy individual with more money than sense 4GB in a notebook isn't going to be a reality for awhile. -
Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?
Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
Thank You all :-) -

MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Mid 2010
What is the MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mid 2010 - 24MC374LL/A, running OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)?
I tried to search for this but was unable to find anything.
Apple Specs say 8GB, but I was just told by someone I THINK would know, that you can actually go up to 16GB.
This would be an enormous improvement to my workflow if true.
Anyone out there know for certain?
Making sure before I buy (or NOT!)
Thanks.
Jerry GI just found this post and I realize this is a late response but maybe it will help others.
Based on recent circumstances I just happened to have two 8GB DDR3 modules collecting dust. Having an old trusty MacMini as my media center, server among other things and whatnot, I was curious if I could bump this little thing to 16GB. In doing so I found this post and verified with OWC.
End result:
Booted with no issues, and is running nice and smooth. Should be noted that just adding 16GB of RAM to a Core 2 Duo will not make the machine lightning fast or become some amazing computing platform. It will just make the box run a bit quicker and give you the ability to have more applications open before you begin to note some lag.
However this is really nice to see: -
I'm thinking of getting the 2.33 Macbook pro and configure it with 3gigs of ram. I noticed that there was mention that only 2 gigs could actually be recognized. Is this true and if so what is the benefit of 3 gigs?
thanks
Scot
titanium 15 inch original, Mac OS X (10.3.7)well, I'm only going on a quote from someone at apple in an interview/review I read online of the new MBPs. apparently the uneven RAM slot use you would get with 3GB is still a performance hit, but I have no idea how much of a problem this is. if you really are working in a way that can eat up all that RAM, then it may be worth doing it, I wouldn't imagine they'd even offer 3GB if it was unstable or caused a performance hit so bad that rendered it useless. but that's just my guess.
-
I'm sure this is probably not possible, but worth a shot.
Can I transfer the 1GB RAM chip in my Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz to my new MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz?If the mac does boot by some strange change you will be totally downgrading the performance of you computer as both chips will need to run at the speed of the slower chip from your PowerBook.
It is simply a bad idea. -
Hi folks,
My boss wanted to upgrade his MBP 15" 2.4 GHz's 2GB RAM to 4 GB. I went to the Apple store for help, and was told they only work on fried RAM - but they sold me the memory module and showed me the step by step guide.
We followed the step by step guide to the letter, but now that the new memory is installed, it's only recognizing one slot. When we run system profiler, it comes back with the message
BANK 0/DIMM0 Empty Empty Empty Empty
BANK 0/DIMM1 2 GB DDR3 1067 MHz OK
The same thing happens even if we switch the slots that the RAM is going into - and when we reseat the original memory sticks, it only recognizes 1 GB.
Could we have caused the slot itself to go bad? Is there some sort of diagnostic I can run on it without having to take it back to the store, to see if it is the slot? ...if it is, dare I ask how difficult it is to get fixed and how much it tends to cost?
Thanks in advance.Hi, I have the same problem when trying to update my memory in my MacBook Pro. I installed the new 2x 2GB memory cards and it does not matter which slot I put the memory in the MacBook Pro will not boot when both cards are populated. I removed the 1 GB card that was in slot 1, I installed both 2x 2GB cards and the system would not boot. I removed the card in slot 0 and the system booted and showed that I have 2GB in slot 1. I then tried to insert the original 1 GB card in slot 1 for a total of 3GB the MacBook Pro again would not boot. I swapped the cards around thinking that there may be some order in which the memory needed to be installed. Again this did not work either. I verified that both slots worked, if I install the memory in slot 0 with slot 1 empty the MacBook Pro boots, if I install the memory in slot 1 with slot 0 empty the MacBook Pro boots. The question is, is their anything that is required for the MacBook Pro to recognized that I have memory in both slots at the same time and boot successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrading ram on macbook pro Early 2011
I have a 13in macbook pro early 2011 and need to upgrade my ram from 4gb (2gbx2) to 8gb (4gbx2). I have been looking online and found a lot of bad reviews for recommend brands and wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions.
