Bad RAM? Read this first!

I've been trying to tell people this for over a quarter of a century, but still they won't believe.
Perhaps this review from Anandtech will be more convincing:
"The ripple is the variation in voltage over a particular rail.  Like we mentioned on the previous page, too much fluxuation in voltage can lead to damaged hardware. A surprising fact we dug up during this review was that the majority of damaged RAM returned to memory manufacturers is destoryed by fluctuations in the voltage."

If you’re NOT running Aperture 3.6 and want to update to 10.10.3 - read this FIRST.
In this personal scenario, I used a Mavericks (10.9) test hard drive to see what would happen if I updated to 10.10.3. No photos were harmed in the making of this post. I have full redundant back-ups of everything as should you before attempting ANY OS update. There simply is no excuse not to back up and keep your personal data protected in this day and age.
Now that’s out of the way…
If you’re not running Aperture 3.6 (which I believe is only available if running 10.10.2), updating to 10.10.3 will disable any version of Aperture below that and it CANNOT be updated or found on the App Store, or downloaded from anywhere else. Both the Aperture and iPhotos icons in the dock will have a white circle with a line going through it.
If you click to open Aperture, the computer will prompt you to update to the latest version because the current version is not compatible with Yosemite. After you acknowledge that, it sends you the the App Store where you will be met with a message that states “Item not available”. It also no longer appears in your purchase history so you can’t update it from there either!
You’re now forced to use the new Photos app.
Upon it’s it’s first launch, the Photos app will create a new library for itself and migrate/duplicate all Aperture photos into it. Effectively doubling the disc space used by your pictures...
This behavior apparently does not happen going from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3. In this latter scenario, Photos still uses the Aperture library and creates a smaller Photos library migrating only the metadata it seems. The actual photos are still referenced from the Aperture library and you can continue to use Aperture (3.6) if you choose. The libraries are NOT unified though. Changes made in one will NOT be reflected in the other.
In other words, you cannot leap-frog update if you want to continue using Aperture.
The 10.10.2 Combo Update “may” solve this problem but I have not tested it. Here is a link if you’re feeling brave. https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1786?locale=en_US
    Here are some screen-shots.

I had been trying to download 7.0.1 with Firefox 3.6. Just would NOT download. Well, I opened another browser, Safari, went to the download page, and the download worked. Who knew?
    All is well now.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Trouble shooting guide! Read this first!!!! rev 13-1-2004

    (Revision 13-1-2004)
    Hi there,
Follow everything on the list, even if it doesn't look like it would solve your problem, most problems are created somewhere else!
    To give some examples:
    CPU won't run FSB133....mostly powersupply or CPU-cooler.
    Videocard won't load drivers....mostly powersupply.
    Sound won't work.....mostly metal-standoff's.
Windows won't install, file read error.....mostly CPU-cooler, Bad-ram or powersupply.
That is why you need to go over the entire list and check all!
Before you start doing anything, remove the power and make sure that you have touched the metal case of your system. If you don't you could damage your system due to static discharge!
Thanks to Arioch and Dragon60 for comments on this.
There are several reasons why this happens.....to name the most commen:
    CPU speeds
You have a Duron, that CPU is 100FSB!
You have a Athlon(XP) and it's showing the wrong speed, set the CPU-FSB to 133....
    Or 166 when it's a FSB333 CPU....or 200 when it's a FSB400 CPU....
Some boards have a jumper to set it, other do it in the BIOS.
    Check your manual for this.
    Speeds must be:
    Duron upto 1300MHz = 100MHz (=200DDR)
    Duron from 1400MHz = 133MHz (=266DDR)
    Athlon B type = 100MHz (=200DDR)
    Athlon C type = 133MHz (=266DDR)
    Athlon XP - C type = 133MHz (=266DDR)
    Athlon XP - D type = 166MHz (=333DDR)
    Athlon XP - E type = 200MHz (=400DDR)
Use this link to see if your motherboard actually supports your CPU.
The TBred CPU's (0.13) start from XP-1700 and up, but not all boards support this CPU and they either show on the D-LED all red or don't start at all!!
The K7T266pro2 is an exception, it can be made to support the TBred CPU's, on this link you find all the info on how to make it work.
Many reports have told us that FSB333 CPU's work on KT3-Ultra boards work just fine, but it's unsupported by MSI, we don't know why....
As for mulipliers with AMD CPU's, just set them Automatic, as they are hardcoded on the CPU themselves and will allway's be correctly, even if if you think the BIOS doesn't know it.
    How to recognise the CPU:
If you look on the dice, there are letters after the speed.
The last letter will tell you the FSB of the CPU.
    B=100MHz (=200DDR)
    C=133MHz (=266DDR)
    D=166MHz (=333DDR)
    E=200MHz (=400DDR)
To recognise a CPU quickly, checkout this link.
    Thanks Mellops.
The MHz setting must match your setting in the BIOS for FSB value, as it translates to the correct FSB setting for the CPU.
The best way to identify a processor is by using the OPN (Ordering Part Number) which can be found on the processor (E.g. AXDA 2700 D K V 3 D).
Detailed information on the code can be found in this AMD document. (Thanks Hans)
    CPU Cooling
CPU cooler not made for your CPU, check if it can handle your CPU....
CPU cooler mounted wrong!, take it off and check it as it will fit 2 way's, but only 1 is the right one, examine very carefull!
The cooler has a lower part that needs to go over the bump (higher part) of the socket, if it's not over there it won't cool the entire dice and WILL give you trouble.
Also check if it's making contact with the entire dice of the CPU...
Make sure you regrease it again, the same grease/paste can't be used twice!
YOU MAY NEVER USE A THERMALPAD OR GREASE AGAIN! APPLY NEW EVERY TIME YOU TAKE THE COOLER OFF!!
top 2 show how not to do it
Used too much silver-grease! It will shorten the bridges on the CPU, clean it and use white-paste.
(Silver-paste is not recommended in any case!)
The latest AMD XP CPU's (XP-2200 and above) require a copperbased heatsink because the dice is smaller and generates far more heat per square cm then the "old" CPU's do.
How to check the cooler before taking it off.
There is a simple way to check the cooler without taking it off.
You do this by first checking your idle temp with PCAlert, it should be below 50-55C.
Then you download a client from www.distributed.net, let this client run for about 10 minutes while monitoring the temps, after about 1 minute or so it should stabilize and your temp should have gone up about 10-15C (max).
If it still goes up or the system crashes, there is a big chance you mounted the CPU-cooler wrong.
When you can't run this check, try with FSB100, if the system does run the check then, it could be well that the cooler is mounted wrong or your powersupply doesn't have enough power.
***** YOU CAN'T CHECK THE CPU COOLER ON TEMPS OR FAN RUNNING, IT MUST BE TAKEN OFF THE CPU!!! *****
Cleaning the CPU and Cooler - thanks to Dragon60 for his addition.
An additional comments about this is what you clean the CPU with in this situation. The best thing to use is isopropyl alcohol. If this is not available then metholated spirits would do.
Make sure you allow the CPU to dry properly before you put it back in. This also means DO NOT try and clean it whilst it is still in the socket as some of the cleaning fluid, grease and dirt may get underneath and short some pins.
Last but not least. DO NOT use acetone to clean anything inside your PC. (or outside for that matter) It MAY not do any damage BUT it may disolve some parts.
    Thanks Dragon60.
If you don't understand what we are talking about on this cooler matter, then read this link: AMD CPU & Cooling guide
    Powersupplies
Powersupply too little, most commen cheap 300W CPU's can't handle an XP-1700 or above, try a better one to be sure.
Make sure your powersupply has about 185W combined on the 3.3+5V and that the 3.3V has 20A or above.
That should be enough for most systems.
On the latest boards the 12V has become very important too, expecialy with TBred CPU's.
Make sure yours can give 18A or more on the 12V line too.
I have found that a lot of cheap 350W will fail with modern boards and TBred CPU's.
Allway's make sure you have a decend PSU, it never fails to spent a bit more on that part!
Borrow a bigger one from a friend if you are not sure....
More info about powersupplies: Click here.
And the second you must read: Click here.
Powersupplies with these type of numbers on them or higher should be fine:
    3.3V - 28A or better
    5V - 30A or better
    12V - 18A or better
Watch out!! Cheap PSU's like Q-Tec come nowhere near these figures!!
Do NOT trust the 300W or 400W rating on them!!!
Q-Tec is about the worst of them all!!
    Metalclips
Stand-off's left between the board and the case, take the board out and check for too many of those metal-clips, they can shorten circuits and cause al sorts of problems (most of the time audio problems)
    RAM
Ram problems, don't try to run with PC100 (SDram boards) when you have a 133FSB CPU, get PC133 ram of decend quality.
In any case, don't use cheap quality ram (Crucial seems decend, but give's a lot of problems, I consider these cheap quality too :P ), replace the ram with another brand to see if it fixes it....
    DDR ram speeds:
    Duron upto 1300/Athlon-B =100FSB=PC-1600=DDR200
    Duron from 1400 =133FSB=PC-2100=DDR266
    Athlon-C/XP upto 2600 =133FSB=PC-2100=DDR266
Athlon XP D-type and above =166FSB=PC-2700=DDR333
Athlon XP E-type and above =200FSB=PC-3200=DDR400
Higher DDR speeds are only a must if you try to overclock, they have no speed gain if run at the correct speed. You may use faster ram on a slower system, the speeds given are what is needed minimum.
Perform RAM test tools, ie http://www.memtest.org if you suspect RAM is faulty, such as BSOD or data corruption. [added by Maesus]
Try your system allway's with 1 stick of ram, adding more sticks can give all the trouble too.
Some sticks just won't work in pair and a lot fail when you put 3 or more in the system.
When you want to use 3 sticks, make very sure you use the MSI tested ones, they are your best chance that they work without problems.
If still nothing, try to seat the ram in another slot, sometimes they work better in another slot.
    Thanks boost
Or rise the Ram voltage a little, be carefull doing this!
Sometimes this works when you have a lot of ram in there.
    BIOS
BIOS settings not right, clear the CMos and start with the default settings, if it works, try setting ONLY the FSB to 133 if needed, nothing more.....
    And go further from there......
    Clearing CMos
When you clear the CMos, make sure that all power is cut from the system.
This is done by takeing the wall-plug out or use the switch on the powersupply to turn it off.
On most boards, as far as I know all MSI boards, you must set the JBat1 to position 2-3 (clear position) for about 10 seconds, then set it back to 1-2 (keep data position)
After this your CMos should be cleared and you can turn the system back on.
In some rare cases it's needed to take the battery out too for a minute or so.
It can happen that the system will prompt you to set the BIOS again, go into the BIOS and set everything you need, then save the settings.
    Thanks fguevara.
    Harddisks
Harddisk is giving problems, most of the time with WD drive's, they are jumpered somewhat strange compared to others:
No jumper = Stand-Alone no other drive attached to the cable.
Jumper master = if you have a slave drive attached
Jumper slave = when it's slave to another drive
    Harddisk is doing weird things:
Make sure you have connected the blue connector to the board, and don't let the other end of the cable unused, make sure there is a device connected to it.
The middle connector can be left into the air without problems if not needed.
IBM harddisks seem to fail a lot, try Drive-Fitness-Test on it, see if it has problems.
Other brand drives can have problems too, make sure they are ok, as harddisk failure can cause all sorts of problems.
Allway's be sure your harddisk is in tip-top shape, if not, replace it and try another to verify.
For more information read this: Click here.
To know what harddisks your motherboard support, use this link.
To enable harddisk over 137GB in Win2000 edit this registry key:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Atapi\Parameters]
    "EnableBigLba"=dword:00000001
The KT4 raid boards only support 1 harddisk on IDE3, the rest must be SATA drive's!!
Harddisk/power led not functioning - thanks to Tweetyoost
If your HD led or power led not work try to switch(wrong + or - side) the connectors on the motherboard.
leds will work only when + or - is correct
    Thanks Tweetyoost.
    Floppy drive's
If your floppy drive doesn't work or the led stay's on all the time.
Make sure the floppy is set correctly in the BIOS, as the BIOS doesn't autodetect a floppy drive.
Check the cable, make sure the twist in the cable is at the floppy-drive side.
If the light stay's on, flip the connector at the floppy-drive arround.
Sometimes it happens that even after all this, they still don't work, try with another drive from another brand.
Not able to enter the BIOS or lockup
When you try to enter the BIOS it won't go in there or
lockup, but your system is running fine.
This symtom can happen when your CPU-Cooler is giving spikes on the coolerwire.
Try with another brand of cooler to test if it solves it.
Keyboard and optical mouse lights stay on after power off[/U]
Some motherboards have a jumper called JKBV1, this jumper is located (mostly) near the keyboard connector, put it in the other position.
If your board doesn't have the jumper, try to find the following BIOS settings and turn them off:
    resume on KBC
    resume on PS/2
    resume by alarm
    USB ports not working[/U]
Check in the BIOS if the ports are enabled.
USB2.0 ports are supported in Win2000+SP3 and XP+SP1, just let the OS reinstall the ports and they should work.
    Thanks Stygge
Replacing parts and the system won't boot after
It's never a good idea to replace stuff like CPU and ram without taking the board out of the case.
But if you still like to do so, please support the board, because if you don't you might bent the board a little and cause other components to make bad contact.
Allways support the board when you replace stuff, no matter what!
Also make sure your system can take the replacement, it could happen for example that your powersupply can't handle your changed videocard from GF2MX to GF4Ti4600.
Test all the parts in another system
Make sure that the new part is in good working order in the first place (in particular: videocard, CPU, memory): try it in another system, or have it demonstrated by the one you bought it from if possible.
Testing might also give you a clue on what is actually wrong in your own system.
    Thanks HansH.
    Checking the powersupply
Don't do this if you don't know what you are doing!
    Disconnect the powersupply.
Orientate the 20pin Powerconnector with the clip up.
Locate pin 4 and pin 8 top row, mostly green and black wire.
Use a wire to short them (or better a 12V test lamp).
Now connect the power and the fan inside the powersupply should start spinning.
If it doesn't your powersupply maybe dead.
    Thanks HansH.

Dude thank-you for your wonder detailed knowldge, I have descovered that lets say xp 1700 in a ultra 2 can only handle at the most 143fsb mult at 12.
Given the settings" irq's are a major",part of directing traffic and power? example:
Sound blaster Live , uses two irq's most common at"Auto" is, irq 10, or 5, and Sound blaster 16 emulation usually takes irq 5,. I have found that the sound card in slot3 works great , but to do this I had to change the Bio's and assign slot 3 irq 7 . and make sure printer port has share irq enabled
Problems that accure with bad traffic are like this. Start a dedicated server. minimize than start your game?":censored:  no sound what could be wrong"? Shoot another problem Connection problem?. "what would it be like with no stop signs,,,that is the same as a irq. with the same knowldge this topic brings IRQ need to be clearly understood.
I can honestly say my system is error free and running like a dream.

  • NEED HELP? Read this first. Also, NOODZ.

Ok, first, noodz (caution: may not be work/school-safe*).
Now, if you need help, follow these guidelines.
    Do your homework first.
Many of the questions that get posted here are directly answered in the Wiki or easily found on Google or through an Arch forum search. The Latest News will sometimes address known issues too. Finally, you can check the bugtracker to see if anyone else has reported the same problem. Do some research before posting to save yourself and others time. Don't just post a problem and expect everyone else to do your work for you. Archers help those who (at least try to) help themselves.
    Use an explanatory subject title.
Titles such as "this doesn't work, wtf???" do not help and make people roll their eyes. Try to summarize the problem in the title so someone opening the thread has an idea of what your post is about. This will also increase the chance of someone who can solve your problem finding your thread.
Explain the problem clearly and provide detailed information.
Again, "it's just broken" and similar "descriptions" don't tell anyone anything. Give all the relevant information that you can think of, such as the specific error that you're getting, system information (e.g. soundcards for audio problems, network setup for connection problems), when the problem started and what might have caused it, relevant logs, relevant system configuration files, etc. Include information about anything that you've tried so far to solve the problem. You can also read this extensive guide on getting help.
    Be patient and polite.
Sometimes it takes time to get a reply. Do not bump your thread every 3 hours with messages like "come on, help me!!!". Also, don't be rude to people who misunderstand your problem or reply with suggestions that don't work. Instead, politely try to explain your problem more clearly.
Mark the thread as [SOLVED] once you've found a solution.
Once you've found the solution, edit your original post and add "[SOLVED]" to the beginning of the subject title. This way others with similar problems will be able to find the solution faster.

Tip for the future - if you want to make effective contributions, it would be better not to include random links to pages that may not be work/school-safe. Whatever merit your suggestion may have has been completely undermined by this unnecessary nonsense, which clearly belongs in the Off-topic area.
Um, it's a joke. If you check the link, you'll find a wikipedia page.

  • GOT PROBLEM! READ THIS FIRST! (Updat

Today, i will cover about sound quality. It means you get to understand the problem of sound and understand what is SOUND!! You will find my own tweaks setting below of it...
    Distortion:
Distortion is not just Booooo....booooo sound you heard!! If you listen to a distorted above average speaker output it will never crack. But this doesnt conclude the speaker didnt distort and can blast until FULL volume!! If you hear the bass hitting isnt percise or hard to hit with added of loud boooo boooo noises, IT MEANS IT HAD REACHED ITS LIMIT
In addition, if you hear your sub woofer wood had lossen screw or wood sound, it also means it had reach it limit.
So, FOR GOD SAKE, THE TABLE SHACKING BY BOOO BOO SOUND IS NOT BASS, IS A CRAP RETART LOSSY DISTORTED SPEAKER. Some music booo a lot...but it will be a mighty booo, then again, it depends on the music. Good speaker like the S750 wont boo a lot! How to test it's Switch on "Hooboostank-The Reason" if your speaker boo like hell in this music, IT SUCKS!! UNDERSTAND? END!
    UNDERSTANDING THE MUSIC CONCEPT
When i say this topic, please dont judge people speaker distort badly. You should understand that some music causes that too. Music bit rate is the cause of the sound quality. The higher the better, the lower the worse. Hissing sound is the problem of the music itself or bit rate of the music. So, please check the bit rate of your music content if it doesnt sound right. To understand more of music concept, get a headset to hear it clearer, they do make a diffrence ^_*...
    Bass Audjustments
Most NOOBS or nuts thing that the only way to get strong bass is turning the bass setting to the highest! WRONG!!!(It is true if you had a $30 below speaker) If you had a surround or a high end speaker, turning the bass to the highest will sound like a lossen plate with nuts being screwed tight! As a result, you will hear no deep down firing bass, instead of a tight screwed bass listening experience. IF you turn your bass setting to center, and use the master sound volume to go up, the bass can beat more smoother and easier. Is hard to explain, but it makes a diffrence in terms of deep and precise of it...try it out!
    VARIOUS SPEAKERS
Speakers can be categorized to_O. For example, while do people gives praise to altech lansing more ? and comments klipsch as the best game speaker in the market ? why?
It is because diffrent speaker gives diffrent output. some speakers like 2. speakers often tweak it for average used, thats games, music and movies.. Ever heard of road show TV speaker that cost $0,000 and sound great in movies but sound terrible in music? THATS THE POINT! How to diffrentiate? To diffrentiate it, a speaker that gives out hard bass is mainly for games, not suitable for music or movies. Secondly, speaker bass that is soft is for movies and musics. Althought sound card can configure it, but it still makes a diffrent in speakers type. Now why do my s750I 200++ walt RMS power is not as good as the logitechz5500 00++ walt?
    Design WOOFER output
Is not about design, is about how the bass output. If you buy a woofer that had a satellite hole(Not the output air hole, the hole that had cage in it) facing down to the floor, you wont hear bass hit outside your room. It is because the bass all gone down. As a result, your downstair neighbours is mad @_#(Read speaker placement for details). So again, why people said s750I bass is not good as the logitech? it is because S750I bass is facing the floor and the Logitech Z5500 is facing to the outer direction like the standard direction used by all 2. speaker. Facing Left or front or back and NOT DOWN like S750i! Lastly, S750I bass is better than Z5500 just that you cant know it ^!^...
    HEAT MANAGEMENT
I had receive report saying that gigaworks wont last for a year..... So, You think you can on your speaker 24/7? THINK AGAIN. They say your listening will decrease after hours of long bass firing music. WRONG!!! If you blast your speaker too long, the hearing decrease is not you, but is the SPEAKER! To maintain a healthy speaker, blast it for 3 to 6 hours a day and rest between 2 hours before continuing. If you dont believe it, try it yourself!!! Make sure you turn it off, not on without use!
    SUB PLACEMENTS
A lot of people tends to put their sub woofer under their desk, center of their sit. GOOD, BUT IDIOT!! Why? if you put like that, you wont had a enjoyable listening experience, cause the bass would irritate you too much. To maximize your listening experience, put your sub woofer at places that dont block left, right backwards, foward sections. Gi've the speaker a big clear way. If you do that, the sound will blast nicely. If you dont, the blocked junction will compressed all the bass towards a specify direction, resulting in overwhelming bass experience *~*. In my opinion, put it left or right of you !
Example of some distorted sound problem quality games
    DOOM 3
Problems: Hissing while monster attacked with fire
Solution: Sit far from your speaker, you wont feel it
    Case: Weird
    BATTLE FIELD 2
Problems: distorted and cracked sound while Jet missles hit something or car blow out
Solution: sit far from your speaker, it wont happend!
    Case: **bleep** weird
    Quake 4
Problems: surround speaker with "Tak" like there's a speaker problem when user countering a lot of enemies while firing happily ^!^.
Solution: 00% game need a patch
    Case: is normal (EA fault)
Examples of music that had some problems
    IN LUV with a striper & T-Sprung
Problem: Just listen to that bass sound, people will think your bass got problem in far listening
    KElly Clarkson Because Of You.
Problem: the bass, is a terrible bass song. This can be heard clearly by turning on 24-bit crysterllizer.
All Hilary Duff Old Album Songs
Problem: her song bass is recorded in low quality, so you will experience some weird experience
Example of music that sounds good ^!^
Try listening to some club music like
    BeniBessi
    Linkin Park
    Where is the love
Result: their bass is percise and strong.
So, IS MUSIC PROBLEM, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT!!
    WHAT SETTING I USE?
    My Hardware's
    P4 2.8
    Gigayte mother board
    756 Ram
    Direct 9xC
    Window XP pro
    X-Fi Platinium
    Gigaworks s750i.
    Software
Windows Media Player 0 for movies and music (REMEMBER, EQUALIZER MUST BE TURN OFF, IT AFFECTS QUALITY)
    Power DVD XP as codec
*NEVER USED CREATIVE PLAYERS (Wont support full surround)
*make sure your divx sound setting is not interfering with your sound setting (It always does, So i never install it ^!^)
*make sure there is only sound driver installed and thats only CREATIVE. No remix application or stupid bass boost applications, or no crapy sound filtering applications installed.

    24-BIT CRYSTLELLIZER MAXIMUM
    7. setting
    GAME MODE

With this setting i make, i had no such problem as you encounter! JUST TO LET YOU KNOW THAT,good products will discover the bad things of other products. For example, if the music is distorted, you will listen it clearly. it just a meaning of whether you can understand the meaning of it ^_*
TAKE A LOOK AT A SURVEY CONDUCTED:
35 percent of user have more money than brains
70 percent of user that i had conducted says that his $43 speaker system will not distort at high volume! for example of the conducted users speakers are, altech lansing 2., Klipsh Promedia 2.!!!
95 percent of user doesnt aware of KPBS quality formats in MP3, WMA...
00 percent of user is stupid enough to cheat by advertisements ^!^...

  • Thinking of joining BT? Read this first...

I'm not great with Forums and as far as complaining in the relevant place, I'm unsure of where to do so.
My problem lies with BT as a company.
I recently signed up for BT entering the contract with an online order.
I have BT Vision, Broadband w/Hub and the Phone Services of course.
I was mislead and miss-sold to upon entering the scheme, being promised x amount of channels on the website within the description of the package (BT Gold On Demand or something to similar description). Later finding that I am effectively paying for a Freeview Digital box with the ability of low quality on demand features.
At no point was I fully made aware that the capabilities of the TV service did not match the likes of Virgin or Sky for the sheer amount of programs received. I was always under the impression that this was just an alternative to Sky, as Virgin would be seen.
For the reason stated I am not satisfied with the service, therefore chose to cancel the services within 7 working days. I then received a rather informal call from one of their representatives, "just letting me know" that this would cost me approx £750 in cancellaions fees. This is appalling. To see a big company try to mislead someone in such a way, and then try to claim the funding for the remainder of the contact which was never fully stabilised is sick.
I am fully within my right to cancel this service, without inducing any fees of any sort. I am fully educated in the Distance Selling Regulations and I know my rights. BT as a company is therefore breaking the law in formally threatening to charge these rates, during my conversations with multiple Front Line Managers who also thought it would be nice to mention their companies corporate solicitors "who are very educated within all the t's and c's" and so on and so forth.
I am currently within my 7th day of service. I am willing to pay for the 7 days, for the first month in fact. I have informed them that I am willing to return all goods, within the original packaging, in full working order. And I will even accept the up front activation charge, for their inconvenience. On a whole I think I am being reasonable. But the Front Line Manager of the Doncaster Call Centre (not to mention any names...) confirmed that he was effectively the dead end of my journey if you will, he agreed to pass me onto the Complaints team who he said will only re-itterate what he had told me for the half hour of my time he took.
I am displeased with the service given. With the way my case has been handled. With the unprofessional manner of every representative I have spoken to this afternoon. With the misrepresentational method used within the layout of the website itself. And more importantly, I am displeased with the manner of which a well known company such as BT chooses to handle its current/possible customer base. After certain legislation was brought forward in 2000 in an attempt to protect customers in the fields of safe and fair selling, it disgusts me that Ofcom and the likes would still oversee such bad practice.
I'm hoping that at the very least, possible customers thinking of joining BT will see this and think twice. I hope that this post will achieve something, with it being on BT's website I'm sure it will cause some fireworks, I just hope this is seen by whome ever may be able to deal with my complaints in an appropriate manner, as opposed to the unprofessional representatives they place on their frontline to deal with their loyal customer base.
    Regards
    Peter Ashton

I hope potential customers see it too. I don't understand how/why/whether the distance selling act does/doesn't apply - but I'd certainly not want to be in your position.
However if your only gripe is that you don't get as much content as you expected, then I'd encourage other potential customers to check out the BT Vision website which does give a pretty fair representation of what's available On Demand. And there is a lot. For the first 3 - 6 months most people will have no problems finding stuff they want to watch. After that period though it does begin to get a bit patchier. Their library could certainly be bigger.
My main gripe with their content is that they tend to show one series then remove it and add another and you can no longer access the last series - so if you weren't a customer at the time or you simply didn't have time to watch what they had at the time then you're stuffed as you can't record it.
$ky have bagged all of the rights to show stuff first. So don't expect BT Vision's content to be on a par with them on that front. But that's why you're considering BT Vision right? Because it's cheaper.
Also you don't have to stick an ugly satellite dish on your house. And the On Demand doesn't have any ads - which is terrific. I think people that pay to watch TV with ads (especially the quantity on $ky) need to have their heads examined.
The Vision PVR is excellent if getting a bit dated. It doesn't do Freeview HD and it's only got 80 hours worth of storage, which is a bit tight in this day and age particularly as they provide no way of archiving recordings. And they don't do a multi-room solution.
But if you know all that in advance and are happy to accept its limitations then you will get some quality entertainment at a very reasonable price.

  • For all iPad owners with video freezing concerns- read this first!

First of all, take a deep breath, acknowledge that it is not your fault, and there is nothing you can do with the software to fix it. It is a hardware problem, most likely video chip related, that is ONLY solved with replacement. I have had several discussions with senior tech support who won't say exactly what the cause is, but admit that there is nothing a user can do to fix the problem other than replacement. Which they will happily provide. This is where it gets tricky.
If you are like me, you can't live a day without your iPad, even though you also have a smart phone, a net book and a laptop....if I can admit it, so can you. So if your local store has a brown box replacement for your model, go in and get it replaced, and you are done. Most of the time, this will fix the issue because they test these ones first. If you are like me and your store does not have a replacement for your wifi only model, then you have to either drop yours off and wait for a replacement to be shipped in 4-5 business days, or purchase apple care where they will hot swap a new iPad with you with overnight to your doorstep. This is the way to go and here is why: you can't be without your iPad and you won't be. AppleCare is $100 that is fully refundable at a pro rated time period. So you have it for 1 week and then cancel it. Cost of use? Should be about $2. And the experience is seamless. This is just my opinion, but it worked for me!

    taffytafftaf,
Agreed; The problem might very well be a hardware one. After all, these symptoms are very weird. It's undoubtedly a great phone. The main reason I bought it was to have the first decent looking WCDMA phone out there (that works in Europe) and I still quite like it.
To tell you the truth though, I was going to replace it with a 8GB N91, until I tried one yesterday. It's way too bulky, actually the dimensions seem weird - nothing like my old 8850. The HDD explains everything, but I really don't need another DAP or a pocket drive, so it won't quite do.
I'll take your advice and take the 6630 to my nearest NSC. Hopefully they'll be able to revive it. If not, I'll replace it with something very small.
    "Good luck"
    Thanks, I'll need it!
    mbamg,
I think it's a case of "what goes around, comes around". You've obviously taken good care of your phone, whereas I haven't. I definitely should've taken it to a NSC to be updated. These problems, as mentioned above, might also have something to do with the hardware, as the phone has taken some unintended abuse during the years. We'll just have to wait and see.
The original RS-MMC card was in the phone when it was updated. After that the phone claimed it was faulty. Other cards don't seem to work either. Unfortunately formatting them didn't help.
I still partially blame the NSU, since these problems didn't surface until the software was supposedly "successfully updated". My 6630 is a bad combo of possibly damaged hardware and new firmware.
Thanks once again for your input guys, I really appreciate it!

Please note this is a peer forum and Creative's Support staff do not guarantee a reply here. If your issue is urgent, you are within your warranty period and/or you do not get a fast reply here you should contact Creative Labs Technical Support.
To contact support click the Support > Contact Customer Support link on this page.
When contacting Creative Support by email it's important to note that you must reply to the autoresponse email you first receive, as detailed in the email itself. Also make sure to check any spam trap you have on your email system if you have not received a reply.
It's also important if you feel that you have a bug or defect with your product to register that issue directly with support. Don't rely on the forum to raise awareness of an issue.

Make sure to also look at Section 3, which covers some of the other General Issues.
    General
Where do I get the latest software, drivers and firmware?
Click the link Support > Downloads on this page.
In general, when installing on a new PC you need to download the driver, and some software to communicate with the player e.g. MediaSource, Media Explorer. For players using the v2.xx MTP/PlayForsure firmware drivers are not necessary, but you must have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 0 (this provides the MTP driver).
Important: Even though files are described as updates, none of the software requires a previous version to install. At worst they will prompt you to connect your player to verify you own a Creative product.
Note if you are downloading MediaSource make sure to download and install the relevant MediaSource plugin for your player. If MediaSource can't detect your player this is the first thing to check. For the v.xx PDE firmware the plugin is called the Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin for Creative MediaSource , and for the v2 MTP/PlayForSure firmware it's called Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices .
I am completely new to MP3 players, where should I start?
Have a read of my Nomad Primer, so called as Creative's MP3 player range tend to be prefixed with the word Nomad.
I think I have a bug, how can I check?
There's a known bug list hosted at my site here. If you want to add a bug then please
I have a wish request for the player, what can I do?
You can post it here (see the petitions listed in Section of this FAQ), email it to support, and/or add it to the public wishlist I host here by
I'm having connection problems with my player
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
What bit-rate should I encode my music at?
Ultimately it's down to your ears what bit-rate you prefer, and you should listen for yourself to determine it. If you ask on the forum you'll get many different opinions.
Make sure to look at the "MP3 vs. WMA" link below also.
How long should my battery last?
For the Zen and Nomad Jukebox players, to get some idea of how long your battery will last for a given bit-rate look at the battery curves thread. Ultimately battery life is dependent on how you use the player, make sure to follow the "why doesn't my battery last as long as expected?" link below.
How long does an RMA take?
Typically 2 weeks. But it might take a little longer, so don't start posting if it's 5 days.
I want to know how people feel about their Zen Micro/Touch/MuVo etc.
There's a long post titled Experience with your Creative player that has many posts from users about their players. Please search back for threads about specific players before starting a new thread.
Where can I buy online music or get legal downloads for my player?
    See this thread.
My tracks don't play at the correct speed e.g. they play too slowly, why?
Chances are they are encoded in an unsupported sampling frequency. The tracks will need to be re-encoded at a supported bit-rate and/or frequency with something like Creative's MediaSource Audio Converter or dbPowerAmp.
Can a Creative player work on an Apple Mac?
It isn't officially supported, but some kind folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working with Macs. XNJB provides support for the Zen players, and requires OS X 0.3 or 0.4 (check the site for full details). MuVoHelper solves some problems with getting the MuVo to work optimally. The iTunes Zen plugin should support all Zen players. Note if the link to the plugin is broken just Google "iTunes Zen plugin" to find other sources. Also note there's no guarantee that these programs will work with the Mac, so if you have issues you should address your problems to the developer(s) of the relevant program.
Can a Creative player work on Linux?
Again it isn't officially supported, but again some kinds folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working. There's the Gnomad2 project. And don't forget the Linux forum at Nomadness.net if you are still having problems.
    Tag Based Players
This section covers the players that use a hard disk and work using tags e.g. Zen Xtra, Touch, Micro, Sleek.
My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?
If the Zen is not starting properly or not behaving correctly, first try to reset it. To reset all players except for the Zen Micro there is a small switch on the side of the player typically, that you should press using something like a bent paper clip. Don't use anything sharp. To reset the Zen Micro simply remove the battery and replace it.
If this doesn't work then access rescue mode, and try running a disk cleanup.
Next you should try reloading the firmware/OS, but beware if you are having connection problems also with your PC you may end up with a player that has no firmware and cannot be reloaded.
The last resort is to format the player. This will erase the contents from the player, including the content that ships with the player.
If none of these resolve the problem and you are under warranty you should get in contact with support to arrange replacement of the player.
If you aren't under warranty Creative will still repair the player, which you can arrange by contacting support.
How do I do a Disk Cleanup and/or access Rescue/Recovery Mode?
Refer to the sticky Rescue Mode thread. Disk Cleanup is accessed from this. Note that the MuVo players (with the exclusion of the MuVo? players) do not have Rescue Mode.
How long should a Disk Cleanup take?
It should only take a few minutes, and no longer than 30 minutes. Anything longer than this and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
How long should a format take?
Only a few seconds. Anything more than a minute and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
Although I can get into Rescue Mode, I can't select any option, or the options don't work?
If Rescue Mode is not working properly or commands can't be chosen the player is faulty. You need to contact Creative Support.
When are the Zen 20Gb/Neeon going to be released outside of the Asia Pacific region?
Due to popular request the Neeon is launched in the USA, but nowhere else for now. If you want the Neeon then contact your regions Customer Services to request it.
The Zen 20Gb is available from some shops in the USA and Europe e.g. Cambridge Soundworks, and Amazon.co.uk.
Is there a known issue with the Zen Micro headphone socket?
Creative Support have neither confirmed nor denied it officially. Some users have posted purported emails from Creative on the forum saying that the socket has been reinforced, but these have not been confirmed by Creative Support either. The exact incidence of the problem is unknown, but newer players seem to suffer less from it.
Should I buy the Zen Micro or Touch etc. and what colour should it be?
We can't tell you what player to get, or what colour it should be. Look at your collection size and the features of the player (see Nomadworld.com for the product pages) and decide yourself based on this.
Why does my Zen Micro battery drain so quickly?
The standby time (24 hours from turn-off) for the Zen Micro seems to use a lot more power than previous Zens. Creative have released both v (..0+) and v2 (2.20.05+) firmware that reduces the standby time to 4 hours. Make sure to update to one of these if you have a draining problem.
Also see JazzMC's detailed page on this problem.

  • New board for Software Updates - read this first!

    Dear Nokia Support Discussions members,
we are happy to introduce this new section for discussing Nokia phone software updates with your PC or over-the-air.
Please use this board to discuss
    - Nokia Software Updater PC application or over-the-air updates
    - latest software versions for each product
    - any changes you notice over previous software versions
    - making a back-up of your phone data
    - problems you may encounter with the update
    etc.
First and foremost, Nokia Support Discussions is a meeting place for Nokia product owners. Here you can discuss Nokia products, ask for assistance and help other people by providing solutions. Nokia Moderators are here mainly to give assistance in using the boards and to keep the discussions on track.
However, these boards are also a feedback channel to Nokia and people from many different Nokia departments actively follow these discussions. Constructive feedback and criticism is valued and always welcome.
We at Nokia Support Discussions do not have any information about when new products are added to the update service - nor do Nokia contact centers. So you just need to keep checking the service webpage or the boards here. I am sure new products are announced here by our alert members within minutes after they have been added.
I wish to remind the community that posting any confidential information about Nokia product software versions will be deleted and may result in a permanent ban without warning.
Below is the introductory letter that we received from the Nokia Software Update Team - please read it for important information about new products and their schedule.
    See you on the boards,
vandelay & Nokia Support Discussions Team
The Nokia Software Updater is a Windows application that enables you to update Nokia mobile device software (firmware) over the Internet using your PC. The application can be downloaded from the Nokia UK Product Support Internet pages at
    www.nokia.co.uk/softwareupdate
The Nokia Software Updater offers the same updates you would receive at a Nokia Service Centre. The added advantage is the convenience, as you can now easily perform the update yourself from any location with an Internet connection, at a time suitable for you. Keep your phone software up-to-date, or fix a potential operation problem you may have by regularly updating your phone firmware.
In the future, every new S60 product will be compatible with the Nokia Software Updater, but at the moment the application is only available for selected Nokia devices including Nokia 6630, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia N70 and Nokia N72. During the autumn, the application will be available in different languages on different web pages and many other products will also be available for software updates.
The Nokia Software Updater has been made to be as customer-friendly as possible. All you need is a PC and the standard sales-pack data cable - no dongles, no adaptors, no fuss. A typical update takes around 30 minutes. Plus, you don’t need to wait for your device to be returned from Nokia Service Centre.
    Regards,
    Nokia Software Update Team

  • VERIZON users read this first!

I just bought a new Droid X from Verizon about three weeks ago and after two weeks the phone was dead due to poor workmanship from the company. Now Verizon does not want to replace it, and I get nothing but delays and excuses when it comes to get another one. I also paid 400 something for this phone and they wanted me to accept a use factory 2nd for a replacement. Verizon will screw you bad with these phones. Do not buy a Droid X they are worthless and the company will not work with you for a replacement.

I hear you pain, I have been with other companies too and the best service was Alltel but now Verizon has taken over and they are improving in customer service. I had to switch to Verizon because of my 4 relatives sharing my plan two needed new phones. I was forced to switch to Verizon. This came at no cost to me but I felt that I was starting over with a new company because I was an Alltel customer and was with them for years.
Back to your pain, I had the Blackberry Storm then switched to the Storm 2 and had a lot of problems with it, I was in the store every other month and they gave me refurbished phones, always a new problem. I call the *611 number and was given a choice to upgrade my phone even though I haven’t been with them for 2 years. I upgraded to the Droid X. I love it, no problems. Bottom line is … there is a lemon where ever you go, be it a relative or a car or an electronic piece of equipment, and they are out there. My husband has a Storm and never has problems.  If I had to do it again I would choose the Droid X again and again until something better comes along.
They offered a refurbished one because that’s their policy and I understand the whole spend 400 for a now refurbished phone. It sucks. But it’s better than nothing and refurbished phones have been looked over by experts ( I use that term carefully)  and you still have a warranty so if it fails then do it again. Try the * 611 number, it may help, they don’t want to lose your service and don’t want you to stand in their store complaining.

  • Forum FAQ's Read this First

    Dear Forum Members,
We have upgraded the Forums platform. As with any migration, there are differences between the two platforms that we need to address. But more importantly, our goal is to minimize any inconveniences to you our valued members.
Please refer to the following FAQ which will address the majority of your questions as much as possible.
    What happened to my account?
While we have kept members accounts and details, we do not hold any personal or confidential information such as your password. These are all encrypted by our vendor and there is no way for us to know or change these details.

Why do I need to reset my password?
In order to ensure that your postings and relevant information remain secure, we highly recommend that you follow the instructions provided on the email we sent you.
    What happened to my postings?

Moving a 10-year old forum is no easy task. While the majority of your postings have been migrated, the structure and how VBulletin handles each account and posting is now slightly different than before. During the migration, some of the encrypted codes that were removed have affected some characters within the postings. This caused some words to disappear. The forum team had a massive undertaking to clean up the postings, and we are talking about thousands of inter-linked postings accumulated from approximately 10 years of forum activity. For this reason, you may still see some of them with strange html codes. If you spot anything amiss, do not hesitate to inform any of the moderators. During the cleanup, the moderators spent a considerable amount of time to maintain the accuracy of the content.

Do I still get to keep my ranking/status?
Yes. This includes post counts but not the kudos, signature and avatar. If for some reason that your ranking or post count is not shown, please let us know via this feedback thread.
“Help! Some of my messages are missing!”
Drop us a line here and we'll take a look. We don't promise miracles, but we will try our best.

Some of my postings/hyperlinks are broken. What did you do?
Many of the postings and messages were accumulated through the years. As with any other forums, postings and content get out-dated and may not be relevant now. Many links to external sites have also changed since, resulting in either broken links or a redirect to generic page(s). Links within the Forums and those that were linked to other sub-forums are also changed, due to the different Forum structure. We have disabled all outdated links to external sites, images and even to the sub-forums within this site. We will want to keep as much of the Forums intact, and this will be an on-going effort. If you spot any missing links, you are welcome to change them, within all your postings, or just drop us a direct message here and we will take care to update it.

Exactly what did you guys cleanup?
During the migration, we had to create and run certain scripts to strip away some of the incompatible codes that are not applicable to the new site. This was to get as much of the original content out as possible. Some html tags were affected, resulting in both unclosed tags and content. We basically removed those html tags e.g. bold, font type and bulleted points.

    And the upshot is....
    Actually, I know, cos I'm Suzy's Dad...
The order is now available - another database error. BTO needs to get its computer systems sorted out and its sales droids trained to recognise stupidity in the database and track stuff like this down.

Before posting questions about the Ajax Framework use by the SAP NetWeaver Portal, please refer to SAP Note 1166135. You will need a logon to the SAP Service Marketplace before you can access this note!

I should also mention that restriction codes are the same as unlock codes and sim unlock codes.
Sometimes they are also called special codes.
They are all available from your network.
