Bandwidth being reserved for AE guest networks?

Page 24 of the "Apple AirPort Networks" document (http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/airport) says, "When you set up a guest network, a portion of your connection to the Internet is reserved for 'guests', wireless clients that can join the guest network and connect to the Internet without accessing your private network." Question: Does setting up a guest network carve out a fixed and constant amount of available bandwidth such that even when no guest clients are present, the available bandwidth for my private network is less than what otherwise would be available if no guest network was defined?

Welcome to the discussion area, pokerpal!
Question: Does setting up a guest network carve out a fixed and constant amount of available bandwidth such that even when no guest clients are present, the available bandwidth for my private network is less than what otherwise would be available if no guest network was defined?
Apple does not publish a certain specification relating to your question, but several Apple support people mentioned that they had been told by engineers that the bandwidth "reservation" was in the 15-20% range when the Guest network is enabled.
So, makes sense to turn off the Guest network if you don't have "guests", if you want full bandwidth available on the "main" network.

  • Time Capsule + Airport Express (no password for extended guest network)

    Hi guys,
I´m using at home an Time Capsule combined with an Airport Express for extended range.
I´ve activated the Guest Network on the Time Capsule, using an WPA2 Password for it.
Problem is, the Airport Express is extending both the regular network and the guest network, but there´s no password set for the extended guest network.
So basically there are 4 networks, 3 are properly secured (TC regular and guest and AE regular) but I can´t set a password for the Guest Network that´s being extended by the Airport Express.
I have looked everywhere on the AirPort Utility with no luck whatsoever.
I appreciate any help on this.
    Kainan-Maki.

Time Capsule and Airport Express, Windows 7
So you don't have a Mac or even iOS device to setup the TC and express?
This addition of extending guest is new in later firmware.. but you need the 6.2 utility to control it.. AFAIK.

  • Can I set up a default website for my guest network on an EA3500?

Just got a new EA3500, and plan to use its guest network feature to allow Internet access but not access to my LAN.  Wondering if I can set it up so that users on the guest network bring up a particular website when they open their browser.  I didn't see anything about this in the user's guide or in the forums.

That's actually how Guest Access feature works. You can share internet to your guest/visitors without giving them access to your local network. You may configure the Guest Access settings on the router using Linksys Smart Wifi through the local access interface; check this site for the instructions, http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=b509a1805dd6416ebb0e35a7e5a58937_Configuring_Guest...

  • Possible to use Airport Extr and Express for WIRED Guest Network?

    Situation and landscape:
My house has a Comcast cable-modem, which is connected to an Airport Extreme (AEx).
The AEx is running WPA WiFi, and this is all good.
There is one ethernet wire running out of the AEx, which goes 150 feet to the rear of my house, across a short corridor (protected from weather with insulated pipe) and into my garage apartment, where it terminates into an Airport Express (APress.)   This garage apartment is frequently used as part of a rental property.  The APress is extending the same WiFi SSID/settings.
When guests arrive, they are able to plug-in their notebook computers to the APress ethernet port, or use the WiFi.
Well, the problem with that, obviously, is that they can "see" the other computers on the network, and printers, etc.
It would be perfect to set configure the AEx and APress to the WiFi "guest network."  However, there are problems with this:
    1)  Believe it or not, many guests still use direct-plug and do not have nor know how to set up their WiFi -- so they MUST have a direct ethernet wire.
    2)  When I use Airport Utility for the APress, it does not show any WiFi guest network option -- maybe because another dependent setting is not allowing this (i.e. Bridge Mode?")
    3)  The distance between the AEx and this garage apartment is too long between them to shoot a WiFi guest network from AEx and to be picked-up by the Airport Express... and there's a center core in my old house that is impervious to all radio frequencies and could block a nuclear blast.  Well, it causes a degradation of wireless.   And this brings us back to #1 above...in that I need a cable ethernet option.
    Picture attached of current landscape:
    So, maybe....
I've spent the better part of a couple of hours searching here, particularly for the terms "access point" but the terminology isn't what I need.  What I wonder if perhaps I need to place an APress beside the AEx, turn on Guest Network at the AEx, then "pick it up" with a second APress, and carry the ethernet signal to the garage apartment and allow guest WiFi and wired.  (see second picture)   Will this work?

OK, here how to set this up.
Open up AirPort Utility 5.6.1, select the Express, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located below the icons
If you want the Guest Network to have a different SSID (recommended), then change the name of the wireless network, adjust the security settings if needed, and change the Wireless Password and Verify
Click the Internet icon up at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below the icons
Change the setting for Connection Sharing to Share a public IP address
Click the DHCP tab located under the icons
Change the DHCP Beginning Address to read something different.....like 10.0.5.2
Click Update and give the Express a full minute to restart
At this point, the Express indicator light will be slowly blinking amber
Open up AirPort Utility again, select the Express and click directly on the word Status (2nd line)
You should see a Double NAT notice with an option to "ignore" the item
There may also be an Setup over WAN notice with an option to "ignore" the item
Click in the boxes to ignore both items, then click Update again and the Express will restart and display a green light
Try things out to verify that the Guest Network cannot "see" any devices on the main network...and vice versa.

I am out of the country. I turned my cellular data off and connected to wiFi . However, it is still showing that i am connected to a network.  How can i be sure that i am not being charged for roaming?

Make sure data roaming and cellular data is turned off.  If you don't want to receive calls or SMS then put your phone in airplane mode and reactivate WiFi

  • How can I have different access control for the guest network (different than the main network)?

I am trying to control my main wireless network with access control via mac id with no password. I wanted a separate guest network with password access and no access control. However, the only way that the guest network works is if I specify unlimited access as the default. Is what I am trying to do possible.

I am trying to control my main wireless network with access control via mac id with no password.
Definitely not a recommended method for security. MAC addresses are easily cloned by anyone who wants to do so with free tools available on the Internet. An unwanted guest will be on your network in less than a minute if they want to be.
Strongly recommend that you use WPA2 Personal security with a non-dictionary password to protect your network.
I wanted a separate guest network with password access and no access control. However, the only way that the guest network works is if I specify unlimited access as the default. Is what I am trying to do possible.
Unfortunately, Apple does not allow separate Access Control for the "main" and "guest" networks. It's all or nothing, I am afraid.
Likely, the  "best" way to set up Access Control is change the default rule to No Access, Then you will need to enter in the details for every device that you want to allow to connect for both the "main" and "guest" networks with the time limits for each device.

  • Guest network bandwitdh

    Hi,
I have set an Airport Guest Network configuration for our place - we own a holiday site coop. So we have the Main network which is dedicated for our office and a Guest network dedicated for our clients. First it was ok to configure it with the Airport Utility but then we had some problems with clients making huge downloads and finally taking all availlable bandwidth.
My question is: Is there a way to limit dowloads or bandwidth for the Guest network only?
Airport Utility don't offer this kind of control but is there another way?
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, as you already know, the AirPorts do NOT offer any form of QoS or traffic-shaping features that would allow you to limit bandwidth on either the "main" or "guest" networks. If this is important to you, you may want to consider a router that offers these features from another vendor.
One example would be the Cisco RVS4000. This is a wired router and you could still use your AirPort Extreme with it or just get a dedicated Wireless Access Point (WAP) for each wireless network that you would want to establish. You can then administer the Cisco to create separate VLANs (just like the main & guest networks on the Extreme) and have each WAP connected to the appropriate VLAN.

  • Setup Guest Network with OS X Server and Airport Extreme - NEED HELP!

    Hi All,
So I have a small business with a Mac Mini Server (10.6.5) and an Airport Extreme. The Airport is handling the routing and DHCP duties, while the Server is handling the DNS. The Airport is pointed to pull DNS from the Server. All internal systems work great accessing the internet and folders on the Server.
I need to setup a Guest network for internet access, so I turned this function on in the Airport Extreme. It sets up fine, but if you connect to that new Guest Network the system hangs trying to open a web page. My thinking is since the Server is the one handling the DNS it is not working for Guest computers since they are not part of our internal network. At least that is my theory, I could be wrong.
With this type of setup what do I need to modify to get this working? Anyone have any ideas?

After trying for days to figure this out I was finally able to get a working solution and I now have my APE providing a guest and main network while using my lion server as the Dsn server for the main network.
The setup is a bit of a hack and does require you to have at least two devices with staticly assigned ip information on the main network but it does allow you to serve dhcp for both networks from the server and make some services available to the guest network such as iTunes remote for parties.
    1) delete your custom Dns entries from the Internet settings in the APE and set two dhcp reservations for .2 and .3 (in this case my Mac mini server and my airport express)
    2) reduce the dhcp range to only have 2 available IPs (10.0.1.2-10.0.1.3) and save settings
    3) on a computer connected to the main network install wireshark and begin sniffing for packets. Connect at least one device to your guest network and look for any packets that have an ip from your guest network (usually 172.16.42.x) once you capture one of these packets expand the vlan information. This should list a vlan ID ( in my case this was 1003. I would suspect this is universal but do not know)
    4) on your server open network preferences, click the gear at the bottom and click "manage virtual interfaces", add a vlan that matches the vlan ID from above. Click ok and apply your settings. The vlan interface should get an ip in the guest network range from your APE.
    * if you are running lion you will need to install server admin tools before proceeding*
    5) open server admin and add the dhcp service. Create an entry for your primary network (ex: 10.0.1.x) make the dhcp range one higher than the settings in step 2 ( ie: 10.0.1.4 to 10.0.1.253) assign this to the physical interface. Make sure this entry has your internal DNA servers
    6) add another entry for the guest networks ip range (ex: 172.16.42.x) again set it one ip higher than step 2 ( 172.16.42.4 to 172.16.42.253) save and activate both ranges. Assign this range to the vlan interface. Make sure this entry either contains your isps dns servers or another public dns server. Turn on dhcp.
Because you have now assigned the only two addresses in the APEs pool for your primary network to static entries there will not be any addresses to assign and the APE will not respond to requests. This will allow your server to pick up the work of assigning IPs. As for your guest network, the APE will assign IPs for two host and then stop. Your clients may either get an IP from the APE or the osx server so both should have the same info. Just make sure the two static clients on your main network have the local DNA servers entered manually.

  • E2500 Guest Network Bandwitdh Throttle?

    Greetings,
I currently use a E2500 router for my home network. I have setup the Wireless guest Network for my downstairs Tenant while he is out of work so he can still have some internet. The problem however is that often the guest network will take up 90% of my 55mb/sec bandwidth, leaving none for the primary network. Is there a way for me to Throttle the amount of bandwidth the Guest network can use? Say alot 10mb/sec for Guest access only, and leave the rest for our main network?
Any help with regards to this would be very helpful as even though my tenant is down on his luck, if this continues I'll have to remove the guest network completely.
    Thank you.

it's ashame theres no way to restrict the Guest Network, I would think thats an excellent addition to Future routers.
I know he was using about 90% of the bandwidth by the following: we have 3 computers on the main network, 2 wired, 1 wireless. i have a bandwidth download ability of ~55mb/sec with him online on the guest network my wired main computer was suddenly getting ~0.5mb/sec. I unhooked the other wired computer and the wireless devise on the main network and re-tested and still only had 0.5mb/sec
so the guest network had takin over 90% of the net and the router was not re-assigning equal priority to both networks. I had to turn off the guest network and then back on 30seconds later, and I was suddenly back up to full bandwidth.

  • Flapping vlan's after guest network setup

    Hi,
I did quite abit of work on our wireless network last night and I'm seeing alot of these logs on our core switch after the work...
    069130: Feb 16 12:36:20 CST: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 0018.de81.37ed in vlan 140 is flapping between port Gi1/0/37 and port Po2
    069131: Feb 16 12:37:44 CST: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 0021.5c46.12cd in vlan 140 is flapping between port Po2 and port Gi1/0/37
    069132: Feb 16 12:39:10 CST: %SW_MATM-4-MACFLAP_NOTIF: Host 001d.e058.f78b in vlan 140 is flapping between port Gi1/0/37 and port Po1
The network here is in the shape of a "V" using 3750-E stacks with the bottom of the "V" being the core 3750-E stack doing the routing for our vlan's. I have 20Gig channels (LACP) creating the "V" between the stacks...Po1 and Po2. I have about 20 1252's and six 1131's connecting back to a 4404 controller...the controller is connected to port 1/0/37 on the core stack.
    My vlan's are..
    900 - Management vlan
    140 - secure wireless
    144 - employee guests
    145 - guest
I setup our guest networks and H-REAP local switching last night. All wireless networks seem to work fine including the web authentication page for my guest networks. I configured the controller switch interface as a trunk, native vlan 900, and allowed the four vlan's above on the trunk. I did the same to all my AP's...configured the switch interfaces as trunks, native vlan 900, and allowed the four vlan's above on the trunk.
All the AP's were set to H-REAP local switching, native vlan 900 on the controller H-REAP page and the VLAN ID's are correct on the three SSID's I have.
I initally had LAG configured on the controller (this is the last item I did) when I noticed the logs. I removed the three additional interfaces from LAG on the switch, removed the port-channel etc... but the flapping continues.
    Did I do something wrong???

    Thanks Fella5,
Been on the phone with TAC for 4 hours.
Looks like since I was running H-REAP local switching and the AP interfaces were trunked, the controller interface trunk should not have had the 140,144 and 145 vlans on them.
I now have only the management vlan (900) on the controller trunk and the native vlan is set to 900 as well....do I even need a trunk to the controller??
Anyway, it looks like it's working. I can see clients connected, getting IP addresses, the vlan flapping is gone and I can ping them from around my network.
Thanks for all the posts you and others give on H-REAP, guest networks etc. I did all my configuration from this forum and I really appreciate it.

  • Cascading EA4500s and Guest Network access

Hi, I hope esomone can help me here. I've got two EA4500 routers connected via ethernet. The primary router has DHCP enabled and the secondary has it disabled. IP address of primary is 192.168.1.1 and the secondary is 192.168.1.2.
I have set up guest access on both routers however only the primary router allows users to connect. When out of range of the primary router but in range of the secondary router the network is visible but when you try to connect to it, it only gives limited or no connectivity message and can't connect to the internet.
Is it possible for the guest network access to follow the same pattern as the secure network, i.e. the same network throughout the house?
    Regards
    Jon

Cascading two routers should have correct parameters set. For instance, the Ethernet port of the secondary router should be connected to the ethernet port of the primary one, and the DHCP should be disabled on the second router. The ip address you've set are correct for the both routers. This thing shoud be done if the connection is LAN to LAN.
By the way there are two types of cascading: Click here for info!
    For the Guest Network:
Guest Network would only work if the the DHCP is enabled on your router. It means to say that on the type of setup you're doing which is LAN to LAN (DHCP disabled on the second router), Guest network would not work on the secondary router. If the connection is LAN to WAN, then both of the router should have Guest Network working.

  • How do to set up time limits on a guest network

I have a new generation Airport Time Capsule and I have set up a Guest Network for my kids but I would like to set up time limits on the Guest Network also, is there a way to do it?

It is not possible to set up specific time limits for the Guest Network as a whole, but it is possible to set up individual time limits for each device that will be connecting to the Guest Network.....and, also the main network for that matter.
If you can provide us with some more specifics on what you are trying to accomplish, how many devices will be involved, etc.......that will help us craft our answer to provide accurate information.
Meanwhile, if you want to take a look at the general settings in Timed Access....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit
Click the Network tab at the top of the screen
Enter a check mark in the box next to Enable Timed Access
Click on the Timed Access button
Click Cancel to avoid making any changes to your current setup

how do I set up a guest network on my Time Capsule?

If that is the case, then......
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Locate the Guest Network tab located just below the row of icons and click on it
(If you do not see a Guest Network tab....you likely do not have the Time Capsule connected to a simple modem)
Enter a check mark next to "Enable Guest Network"
Type in a name for the Guest Network
    Enter the password and confirm
Click Update to save your settings and Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds

  • Guest network...can't get it to stick

I'm trying to add a Guest Network to my existing airport network (using the current model Airport Extreme base station) and can't get it to work.
Scoured the entire Airport Utility settings looking for it, nowhere to be found. Finally decided to reset the base station to factory default, and then the Guest Network tab finally appeared.
Created a new wireless network with suitable settings & security, turned on Guest Network, updated the base station. After uploading the configuration, eventually got the green light and everything was working.
Went to try to connect to the guest network on my Mac. Clicked the airport icon in the menu bar, where I saw my main network and the new guest network listed. But only for a moment...then the guest network disappeared from the list. Went back to the airport utility, the guest network tab had disappeared there, too.
Repeated this entire process 3 more times with the same results. I have no idea why the guest network won't stick. So I'm desperately hoping someone here does.
FWIW, my Airport Extreme is connected to a FIOS modem/wireless router, and I've never hand any issues with my airport network. I have two Airport Expresses on the network as well, one for printing and one for music streaming to the stereo. Everything works fine except I can't get the guest network established. I'm totally perplexed.
    thanks in advance,

When you had the AirPort Extreme configured and could not locate the Guest Network tab, it was configured in Bridge Mode.
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet icon > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
This is the correct setting for your setup since your FIOS modem/router is the "main" router for your network. To work correctly on your network, the AirPort Exptrem must be configured in Bridge Mode to allow the FIOS router to control the network.
In order for the Guest Network feature to function correctly, your Airport Extreme must be connected directly to a simple modem (only one ethernet port). Unfortunately, you won't be able to utilize the Guest Network feature as long as your FIOS router remains on the network.

  • Connecting to guest network with iPhone ios5

After upgrading to iOS 5 my iPhone doesn´t work on the guest network on my Time Capsule (It connects, but internet won´t work). The reason seems to be that the assigned IP is not in the range defined for the guest network (but rather in the ip-range for my main network). Both my Macs and ipads get the right ip-address. I`ve tried this with 3 different iphones.
All phones worked on the guest network before upgrading, and still works when I connect to my main wi-fi network.

Did you perform a full power cycle and reset of your modem as follows?
Push the reset button on the modem
    Power off the modem
Pull the battery if it is easily accessible
Power down all other devices on your network, order is not important
Wait 30 minutes ( It sometimes takes even longer for the equipment back at the cable company to fully reset so that it will issue you a totally new fresh connection. The cable company will never admit this.)
Reinstall the battery if you pulled it from the modem
Power up the modem and let it run by itself for 3-4 minutes
Start up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for 3-4 minutes so that it will fully associate with the modem
Start each device up on the network one at a time about a minute apart
    Check for operation.
