Bandwidth speed terribly slow

Hi folks,
I am a novice when it comes to troubleshooting my network connection. My frustration is making me crazy, so I will try to provide as much data as possible to help out.
Up until yesterday I was getting good bandwidth speed tethered by ethernet from comcast modem to belkin wireless N routher via comcast @
DL Speed: 29362 kbps (3670.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
UL Speed: 2677 kbps (334.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
today:
Download Speed: 596 kbps (74.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2523 kbps (315.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
March 26, 2010 9:50:40 AM PDT
So, I was using Chrome, was adding extensions and noticed the speed issue shortly afterwards. I got rid of the extension that I had added and still have the same problem.
Well, after looking through this forum, I tried to run ethernet straight from the comcast modem to the mini. No luck in proving the router had anything to do with it.
I am in a bind. What other data should I provide to any of you to figure out the problem?
Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Wow, thanks for the timely responses. Being new here I was waiting to get pummeled with newB jokes and such... LOL
Anyways, I did take a deep breath [thanks] and got online with Comcast support. They did a diagnostic, and reset the connection from their end. Second, I did the reset of the whole system.
Turn everything off
Disconnect power from router
Wait 15 seconds [which felt like an hour and half]
Set everything back up
Start up computer
BAM! I am up and running again. My browser on my phone was faster than my Mac.
Thanks again for the help.

  • Broadband speed terribly slow

Hi for some reason the speed of my connection has dropped to a snails pace. It happened after numerous powercuts on tuesday afternoon from the bad weather effecting Northern Ireland. I've tried replacing microfilters, doing a power cycle then leaving the Hub on (untouched) for 48+ hours and still its really slow. I ran the speedtest and got these results:
Download spee achieved during the test was - 105 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :3424 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
Is there anything i could change at home to bring it back to the normal (2,000-2,500kbps) or is the problem out of my control?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK, not to worry, it's because of the power failures and resulting multiple restarts on your hub/router.
What to do is, remove the broadband socket faceplate if you have an NTE5, and plug the hub into the test socket with a filter, and leave it there for at least 72 hours...
Your IP profile will come back, with resulting decent sync speed and throughput..
See how you go, if it doesn't come back, post back in..

  • Internet Speed Terribly, Consistenly SLOW... Despite "Good" Test Speed Results!

Internet has been terribly slow since we got FIOS Internet (75/50mbps) installed here half a year ago.
YouTube clips, Skype and even our NetFlix streams are all choppy, and inconsistent. Doing searches on Google, Yahoo, or Edmunds would take 3 to 10 seconds...which we all know in 2014 is completely unacceptable.
I have done my homework validating all the potential failure points. I am in the software industry since 1999 and have an expert knowledge in network, databases and systems integration in general. Everything that can be checked, have been done. I've followed all your suggestions on the website, but in vain.
I'm connecting to the FIOS router from several different devices (PC Laptop, MacBooks, iPhone and iPad) wirelessly about 3 to 30 feet away. No microwaves, no fridges, no baby monitors, no thick walls or doors obstructing. Apple TV and WD External HD are unplugged.... yet the internet is SLOW. Ran the Speed test over the past weeks and months, and I always 'score' pretty good....50/35 or 65/40mbps etc. The numbers are impressive but do not reveal the real performance! Back in our old home in Brooklyn, my scores were the same (using Verizon FIOS - same service/speed)...but the speed lived up to the Speed Test results. Had no problem over there.
Can anyone help me? What am I missing? Any special tricks of the trade with this Verizon FIOS internet service?
If this is not getting resolved very shortly, I am ready to escalate this to the management level at Verizon.
Please advise. Thanks everyone for listening.

The best way to find where the problem is without using test gear is by the process of elimination.
Test you LAN using LAN Speedtest.   First test using Ethernet connections and see if you can get speeds of 90+ Mbps.  Much higher is possible if the equipment you are testing with has gigabyte capability at both ends.
If you can't  90+  on your LAN  there is a problem with your LAN setup that needs to be addressed.
Then you can test  speeds on your LAN using WiFi.
Using Speedtest introduces to many additional variables making it very difficult to diagnose throughput problems.
Once you know that your LAN is up to standard then you can point at Verizon.

  • Infinity 2 up and down speed, very slow, huge ping...

Hello wonderful friendly people, i'm looking for a bit of help to narrow down the cause of the terrible internet connection I have.
I live in a flat in a new build block in Bristol, just moved in with the owner who has had a few different connections with different providers in the last few years but have always been really bad service. He is now paying for Infinity 2 but we experience massively varying internet speed, as low as 0.25 Mb and as high as 20Mb download, but upload seems to be a bit more stable.
Streaming netflix, downloading files and general browsing is somtimes OK, but mostly terribly slow. It seems the speed goes up and down constantly, hitting rock bottom very often. Playing games is an absolute nightmare. Ping as low as 5, then shoots up to 500 meaning we can't play at all.
In short, paying a lot for terrible internet. The connection is through the phone line, we have a Homehub 3 but with an ADSL modem, i'm not sure we should be paying for Infinity if it's going through ADSL though? I thought Infinity was only phone line for the last bridge between house and local cabinet?
I think the problem is with dodgy cabling in the flats. From my experience this is where the problem points to but I want to be sure before I go to BT and ask for them to fix their line problems.
Here are some results from the last few days from speedtest.net
Can anyone help me with tests I can do to find where the problems lie, i.e. ping tests, trace routes and the like?
    Cheers!

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3.89 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 16 Mbps-77.43 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 6.77Mbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps
    Thanks

  • Illustrator CS5 Mac OS X 10.6.7 terribly slow

    Hello,
I have an iMac 27", Intel I7, 8 GB of RAM and use Mac OS 10.6.7.
Using Illustrator CS5 on my machine is not really fun since it is slow, cannot work fluently.
I designed a simple A6 page double sided. Using the hand-tool to move inside a zoomed view is terribly slow.
The screen is updated not real time but only arround once per second.
Every few minutes I save my changes to prevent any loss (e.g. AI crahses, Mac OS X crashes etc.).
But thsi is also very slow, it takes arround one minute ore more.
My drawing just consists of a logo, a background object (using an effekt), and a few images (already sized down in PhotoShop).
But as I told you, it is really slow. One more: If I scale the background square (that one with the effect), Illustrator starts to recalculate the effect, which is again, slow, slow, slow! May I should mention that I use arround 1200 fonts, is this a problem?
I heared that since OS X this should be not a problem. If yes what can I do (I really need lots of fonts)?
I already read the Adobe help to improve performance in OS X and Illustrator, but on my machine everything is already done, still slow.
Just to let you know, on same Mac I have a virtual machine using Parallels. The machine consists of Windows 7 and Corel Garphics Suite X5.
    Corel works really fast.
Is this typical that Illustator CS5 is slow on Mac? What can I do?
Thanks for any help in advance!

    Hello again,
Thanks for sharing the file. I checked it out in Illustrator CS5 on my system,
which has less memory and a lower-performance CPU than yours.
Yes, you are using a lot of memory-intensive effects, but the zoom and
pan performance on my system seemed fairly smooth, and I wouldn't
say it was sluggish. In fact, it seems pretty usable for a 66 MB file, at
least as far as I could see.
I did notice a few things you might want to check on your end:
You are linking to several image files. I can see the preview images but obviously not the originals at this end. (That's OK for now.) The link to the black-and-white photo of the old car is apparently referencing an unusual location. You might want to confirm in the Links palette that the file ("2BJWW1.tif") is linking to the correct original file at the proper location by relinking the file. (It might be a good idea to have all of your assets in the same folder as well, for organizational purposes.)
The composite effects that you use on the "Bei Vorlage..." message at the bottom of artboard 2, "Rückseite" seems a bit complex and slow to render, and could be rasterized to display faster. Select the object, choose "Object - Rasterize" from the menu bar and set the options as necessary. (Actually, I'm not sure if this will have a great impact, but you could try it and see.) If you use this option, be sure to (a) keep your original object, preferably in a separate file; and (b) rasterize at the PPI setting that you will be printing at.
Likewise, the bottom "Hintergrund" layers could be rasterized as well. You're using the Sponge ("Schwamm") effect on artboards 1 and 2, which is fairly performance-intensive and requires a redraw whenever you touch other elements of the appearance.
Finally, I noticed you are using some unusual fonts, which is of course fine if the font files themselves are installed and working properly. As an experiment, try selecting all objects on the document and run the Type - Create Outlines command. (Do this on a copy of your file to be safe. You should be able to undo, however.) This will render all of the text as vectors, but it will also remove all dependencies of document to specific fonts. If this results in significant speed improvements, it's possible that you have some corrupt or incompletely installed fonts.
As for the document raster effects settings, that is found under the Effect menu in CS5. (Perhaps you have a German version of AI... ?)
Changing this to a lower number (like 72 dpi for screen) will not harm your document and may speed up performance (it only had a very
small effect on my system, however), and you can always change it back to the original setting before sending it to the printer.
Do you notice slowness in any other applications besides Illustrator?
Also, is the file stored on your hard disk, or are you accessing the file from an external hard disk?
Finally, have you changed the location of your scratch disk? Go to Illustrator - Preferences - Plug-ins and Scratch Disks.
The default primary scratch disk should be your startup system drive.
There are some other tips on optimizing performance as well in the following article:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403884.html
They do mention using a font manager...
Hope that some of these things help!
    Jeff

  • Why is the download/upload speed so slow on my MBA (about 5 times slower than my PC)?

Why is the download/upload speed so slow on my MBA (about 5 times slower than my PC)?

Are you on band 13 or band 4?  13 is the original LTE band and remains relatively congested. Band 4 is the XLTE band and is less congested and has higher overall potential bandwidth (15 MHz vs 10 MHz). Even so, 7 Mbps is more than enough for doing stuff on your phone and is not considered slow.
    To check band,
    dial *3001#12345#*
    select serving cell info
frequency band will say 13 or 4
FInd an area with band 4 and retest.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1206 ' 0.5 0.25 1000 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 100 80 20 500 300 85 25 20480 1024 20 2000     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

  • Why is my LTE speed so slow on my iPhone 6.  I've tried multiple locations in Los Angeles and get ~7 meg. download.  A friends iPhone 6 on AT

LTE download and upload speeds are slow on my iPhone 6.  I also tried this on a co-workers iPhone 6 and got the same results, approximately 7 meg download.  A friend with an iPhone 6 on AT&T is getting ~35 meg download.  Is there something wrong with the network.  I've tried this in 5 different areas in Los Angeles.

  • Scrubbing through footage is terribly slow!!!???

Ive just recently bought the adobe cloud, and was wanting to switch from FCP to premiere cs6. But...... first thing ive notices is how terribly slow it is scrubbing through footage on the timeline. Playback is fine, but scrubbing through footage and trying to find an inpoint is painful.  Also, one of the biggest draw cards was the ability to edit native files from the Canon 5D mk2. This is even worse! Once again, playback is fine, but scrubbing through the timeline is just terrible.  I didn't have this problem in FCP... is there something i'm doing wrong?

The short answer: spend hundreds or over a thousand dollars on one of the few outdated Nvidia cards with CUDA that work in a Mac.
The long answer: ditch the Mac and assemble a PC with top of the line components. I was a Mac devotee until I realized that I could have a computer faster than any Mac if I bought high quality components and put it together myself. You don't need to have a degree in computer science, just some knowledge that you can easily acquire online. The three Macs I had all had different problems and were no better than brand PCs that sold for about 3/4s of the price. They were of course better than the piece of junk Dells or Compaqs that sold at Walmart for $400, or even the $1,200 models, but I got fed up with paying top dollar for a product that didn't deserve it.
The graphics and video industry has this very erroneous notion that if you want to do anything serious in those fields you need a Mac. At one point many years ago that was true, but it hasn't been for several years now. Apple is making the bulk of their money with the iPhones, iPads and iEverything else but Mac towers, so that line has been almost abandoned completely. The exterior is still a design from 2002, and the interior from 2010. The "renewed" 2012 models are a joke, a tiny speed bump and you have to pay $5,000 if you want one that is barely decent. Even worse, even though in recent years Adobe Premiere and many plugins started making extensive use of CUDA technology, Mac Pros still come with only choices of outdated Radeon cards, which are only good for games and maybe some stuff in After Effects but that's it. If you want any sort of an Nvidia card in a Mac, you have to spend thousands on one of the few Quadros that are compatible with Macs, all of them outdated cards, unless you download a hacked driver to make any Nvidia card work, but I wouldn't trust my editing workstation to a hacked driver.
On the PC side, you have several more choices. You can put together a system that will be equal or faster or to any MacPro. To give you an idea, my current system, which has an Intel i7 3930k CPU (six cores at 3.2 GHz but that go up to 4 Ghz each with Turbo), 32 GB of Corsair RAM, and an Nvidia GTX570 graphics card, gives me a Cinebench R11.5 score of 52.91 fps for Open GL and 11.28 pts for CPU render. I was just reading a forum in which a guy that ran the same version of Cinebench on his MacPro with the dual 2.40 Ghz 6 core CPUs(that's 12 physical cores) and what I assume is the stock Radeon graphics card gets 30.75 fps OpenGL and 12.5 CPU. The MacPro may be marginally faster for CPU render than my machine, but much slower for GPU, which is almost as important these days. And checking the current prices at the Apple store, he paid at least $3,800 for that computer, while I paid less than $2,000 for mine.
Five years ago I started assembling my computers, and they have been the fastest and most reliable computers I've ever had. Better than any Mac or brand PC I've ever had, and with the advantage that every two or three years I can upgrade it and still use some components, instead of having to buy a whole new computer like you would do with a Mac.
The only downside to self assembled PCs currently is that as long as Microsoft keeps selling Windows 7 Pro, you're fine, but if they stop and you have to install that abomination of technology that is Windows 8, then the choice is not so clear. But, Windows XP was released in 2001 and millions of computers around the world still use it just fine, so I don't see MS ending sales of Windows 7 anytime soon, because Windows 8 is a toy for tablets, but as a professional desktop OS is a joke, and I'm sure that the hundreds of articles and angry forum posts online about it must have reached them. But at least for now, the choice is very clear, stay away from Apple and go with self assembled PCs, and if you don't know how to assemble one, there are small businesses that do it for you. Believe me, anybody who has the intelligence to edit video can assemble a PC, it's no more complicated than it was to assemble a Lego kit when you were 7.

  • Ipad2 after installing iOS 8.0.2 terribly slow. Module is turned off 2G / 3G GSM

iPad2 updated from version 7 to version 8.0.2 iOS. Update went well. But now the device is terribly slow. To enable cellular data transmission requires a deep restart. Apple devices are known high speed operation for many years of use. Company Apple plans to fix or need to buy for this iPad air?

    Hi, Alexfromrybinsk.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are experiencing an issue with the responsiveness of your iPad.  Try forcing all applications to close and restart the device.  Once this is done test the results.  If the behavior persists, try the troubleshooting steps in the second below.

  • Speed very slow for last 3 days or so.....121kbps ...

M speed is usually 1.5mb been down to about 300 the last few days and dipped now at 121 and just a measly 97 this morning....
done all the usual checks, and i noticed on a local internet forum last night that other is my area are suffering the same too with no explanation from BT
    (my daling code is 01595)
phoned BT...he said there were no faults it must be my end, repeated all the checks including the microfilter, he then said there WAS a problem with outtage and it would be 8 days before my speed was returned to normal....when i questioned this he explained it was cos of a powercut somewhere in the UK for 4 hours?????eh?
he then went on to quiz me if i had selected 1 when i phoned to leave feedback, when i said i had he seemed quite aggitated, quized me more about selecting to leave feedback and told me this effected his performance.
he then told me not to phone BT again for the next 10 days as this would confuse people and it would be an extra week on top of the 8 days i would have to wait for my normal broadband speed.
i am obviously totally disatisfied...i just want to know why my speed is slow and when it will return to normal
    anyone help.???
my dailing code is not on any of the service status pages

tested the line properly and confirmed they could see i had very slow speed, but couldn't tell me why?
they said they would reset the line and i should see an improvement in 24 to 48 hours and it should return to usual in 8 day?? i still dont understand.....
and its still as slow as 112kbps..as me and partner both rely on internet for our work and training its just painful waiting for this to be solved!!

  • IMac internet speed terrible compared with my pc

    Hi.
    I have an intel-based imac with OS X 10.5.2
the only problem i have with it is that the internet speed is terribly slow.
simple pages like blogs, wikipedia or even google can take very long to load.
my laptop pc, as well as other laptops and computers i have have no problems with the internet, everything goes pretty fast.
only the imac has this issue of a terrible internet connection speed.
any suggestions on how to resolve this?

How are you connected to the internet?
Is your system using a wi-fi network, an ethernet hub (shared)
or some other; and if so, have you tried the iMac by itself on
line direct without any other device, except for the modem or
    other ISP provided device?
There has to be a configuration setup difference in the iMac
and perhaps, depending on what your internet situation is,
that could be changed and the problem somewhat reduced.

Mac OS X updates wouldn't update the SuperDrive - that would have to come from a separate firmware update. Updates would/could change the DiscRecording parts of the OS however.
Can you try burning a disc in the Finder using the Mac's built-in software set to maximum rather than Toast? What result do you get?
Media is also important as is the format of the disc:
    DVD+R DL (2.4x)
    DVD-R, DVD+R (8x)
    DVD-RW, DVD+RW (4x)
    CD-R (24x)
    CD-RW (16x)

  • Time Capsule wireless file transfer - terribly slow until...

I've got a really strange problem with Airport and Time Capsule. Wirelessly copying a file from my MacBook 10.5.2 to Time Capsule is terribly slow - until my screen goes to sleep!
80 MB is estimated to 45 min, and only 2-3 MB is copied in two minutes. When I or Energy Saver turn the display off, the same file is copied in 35 seconds!
I discovered this by accident, but it also explains why my first backup (12 GB) looked like it would take forever, but after both me and the display went to sleep, backup was done in two hours.
Anyone else having the same problem? Anyone having the solution?
    Thanks! Joachim

    Hi Joachim,
i think it is the same for me. But only when using timemachine not when doing normal file operations. Maybe timemachine is saving bandwith while the machine is not in screen saver mode...
Your machine should not go to sleep mode when a timemachine backup is running
What is your wireless connections speed?
You can see the rate when 'ALT + clicking' on the airport symbol in the menu bar.
