Basic backup and maintenance questions - ZCM 10.3.3

Hello all,
I am looking for information and feedback about ZCM maintenance and database backup.
We have ZCM 10.3.3 running on a SLES 11 VM. I do keep a clone of the ZCM server when updates are made for backup.
I have I guess a couple of simple questions:
1. How do I tell which database type was selected when ZCM was setup?
2. What are the basic maintenance procedures to address database issues?
3. What should I be backing up for the database?
I did not build this ZCM server and I need to know more. Mostly I need to do some database maintenance as workstation deletions take an extremely long time and I have read somewhere else in the forums that I should be performing DB maintenance and I just need some sort of procedure.
Thanks,
Steve D.

Hi,
You can check inside the file zdm.xml to know which database you have
The file is locate at :
On Windows
ZENworks_installation_path\conf\datamodel
On Linux
/etc/opt/novell/zenworks/datamodel
For database maintenance you can check in the doc Novell Doc: System Planning, Deployment, and Best Practices Guide - Scalability, Fault Tolerance, Maintenance, and Sizing of the Database Server
You can also take a look a the disaster recovery guide because it give some info to what you need to take in backup.

  • Exchange Server 2013 backup and restoration question

    Good afternoon
    I am wondering if I can pick people's brains here if that's not too much trouble.
    I have recently implemented an Exchange 2013 environment with 3 servers (two multi-role CAS & MBX physical machines, and one further virtual CAS server). Everything is working correctly and mail-flow is fine. My question relates to backup and restoration
    procedures. I am running a single Database Availability group with the two multi-role servers members of the this group and I have one Mailbox Database on the DAG, passive on one member and active on the other. Failover has been tested and this is functioning
    as expected.
    The backup environment I have implemented is as follows. I have utilized a separate Microsoft DPM 2012 server that runs a nightly Bare Metal backup on both multi-role servers with a retention range of 14 days and I have protected the DAG using DPM with a
    nightly full-express backup and 4 hourly syncs on one of the multi-role servers. Furthermore the Mailbox Database is protected, again nightly with a copy-backup.
    I am confident I know what to do should the mailbox database become corrupted or lost or need to be restored for one reason or another (it would just be a case of restoring the backed up mailbox database using DPM to a pre-created recovery database), what
    I am not quite so sure on is what I would do should I lose one or both of the multi-role CAS and MBX servers (the third CAS I am not so worried about as it is not used for incoming mail flow from the internet and we really only use it for ECP as we did not
    want to expose this to the internet). I wonder what process should follow to restore my Exchange servers (I know how to perform the Bare Metal recoveries using WSB) and what configuration would be required after restoring the Bare Metal backups.
    I know this is a reasonably long question but if anyone has any advice for me I would appreciate it greatly in the unlikely event something goes horribly wrong with my Exchange environment.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Yes, Most of the configuration settings are stored in AD. Mail data and personal related data are store in Mailbox DB. We just need to take consideration of these two points.
    Thanks,

  • Backup and recovery questions

    Hi,
    I am a newbie in Oracle database 11g Release 11.2.0.1.0 and Oracle Linux and I have questions regarding backup and recovery.
    I used the “Schedule Oracle-Suggested Backup” and have it run nightly to back up to local disk. In the Backup Setting, on the Retention Policy, I selected “Retain backup that are necessary for a recovery to any time within the specified number of days (point-in-time recovery) day = 7”
    With the setting above, I checked the “Manage Current Backups” and I have many back sets for SPfiles, controlfiles, datafiles, and archivelogs for the last several days. However, for image copies, I have only one set and it get over write nightly. With the configuration above, is that true that I can only recover to any point in last 24 hours?
    My goal is to be able to recover any “point-in-time” in the past 5 days, should I change my Retention Policy to “Retain at least the specified number of full backups for each datafile” to 5 backups (each full daily backup)?  Please provide some advices. Thanks

    By looking the following, it looks like by default its 24 hours but it depends upon the recovery window you choose.
    Enterprise Manager makes it easy to set up an Oracle-suggested backup strategy for backups to disk that protects your data and provides efficient recoverability to any point in the a recovery window of your choosing. (In the simplest case, examined in this section, this window is 24 hours.) The Oracle-suggested strategy leverages Oracle's incremental backup and incrementally-updated backup features to provide faster backups than whole database backups, and faster recoverability than is possible through applying database changes from the archived log to your datafiles.
    The Oracle-suggested backup strategy is based on creating an image copy of your database. This copy is rolled forward by means of incrementally updated backups. Oracle Enterprise Manager schedules RMAN backups jobs for you to run during the overnight hours.
    For each datafile, the strategy calls for backups as follows:
    At the beginning of day 1 of the strategy (the time the first scheduled job actually runs), an incremental level 0 datafile copy backup. It contains the datafile's contents at the beginning of day 1. In a restore-and-recovery scenario, the redo logs from day 1 can be used to recover to any point during day 1.
    At the beginning of day 2, an incremental level 1 backup is created, containing the blocks changed during day 1. In a restore-and-recovery scenario, this incremental level 1 can be applied to quickly roll forward the level 0 backup to the beginning of day 2, and redo logs can be used to recover to any point during day 2.
    At the beginning of each day n for days 3 and onwards, the level 1 backup from the beginning of day n-1 is applied to the level 0 backup. This brings the datafile copy to its state at the beginning of day n-1. Then, a new level 1 is created, containing the blocks changed during day n-1. In a restore-and-recovery scenario, this incremental level 1 can be applied to the datafile rolled forward on day n-1 to the beginning of day n, and redo logs can be used to recover the database to any point during day n.
    The datafile copies used in the Oracle-suggested backup strategy are tagged with the tag ORA$OEM_LEVEL_0. The level 1 incremental backups for use in this strategy are created for use with datafile copies that are so labelled. You can safely implement other backup strategies without concern for interference from the backups for the Oracle suggested strategy.
    There are also Oracle-suggested strategies that use tape backups along with disk backups, but those are beyond the scope of this chapter.

  • Transporter - Basic installation and connection questions

    We have never used or installed the Transporter before.  We are currently using Tidal 5.3x and are upgrading a sandbox environment to 6.2.  I have looked at all the transporter documentation I can find and am still missing some very basic questions - plus I cannot get the "help" option in transporter to work.
    WHERE do you install the Transporter and why?  CM Server?  Master Server?  Desktop?  If it is on a server, then does the user that runs it need to remote the server in order to user transporter?
    I have attempted to install on each of the above, but cannot establish a connection.  When I click "test" I get error "Failed to Connect [Login failure with responseCode [404]]What should I be entering in each of the following Connections fields?  My comments indicate what I have assumed/attempted to enter and received the error above.
    Connection name  - just a given name to a connection? aka TESSandboxMaster
    Server Name  - what server?  master?  Is there a specific format this needs to be in?
    DSP/Plug in name - I found a dsp file on my CM Server named TES-6.0.dsp - should I put TES-6.0 here?
    User - network user that is a Super user in Tidal?  aka networkname\superuser?
    pwd - windows pwd for that user?
    Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Hi Patricia,
    1. The Transporter is installed on the Client Manager - the CM is essentially a web server to handle client requests, perform sacmd commands, and utility for transporting jobs from one environment to another. A Tidal user would have to be granted rights to Move Jobs to Production, and I believe Tidal user has to be able to sign on to the CM as well.
    2. I've reviewed an older copy of the transporter user guide 6.1 provides instructions on how to complete those fields:
    To create a connection: (on page 32)
     In the Connection Name field, enter the name for the connection file.
    In the Server Name field, enter the name of the Client Manager machine.
    In the DSP/Plugin Name field, enter the master instance name.
    The master instance name is the TES DSP or Plugin name. This is displayed from the Web UI in the Master Status pane.
    In the Server Port field, enter the listening Web Service port used by the Tidal Web Client. The default is 8080 for non-secured connections and 8443 for secured connections.
    In the User and Password fields, enter a valid Enterprise Scheduler user name and password.
    Select the Secure HTTP option if you want to connect securely through the HTTPS protocol.
    This option is enabled only if Transporter has been configured for secure
    connections. Figure 8 is an example of Transporter not configured for secure
    connections.

  • Basic jsp and servlet question (JSP Model 2)

    Hi
    I want to make an website where i use JSP Model 2 architecture. However I got a basic question
    1. I need to separate business logic from presentation with the use of jsp and servlets. Meaning I want no html code in the servlet. Can you give a simple example of how this can be done? If I map my implementation of httpServlet to a jsp page in web.xml and override doPost() and doGet(). The calls to the jsp page comes to the servlet as it should. I want to process some methods (calling sessionbeans or similar which in turn calls entitybeans) and then show the jsp page.
    How do I show the jsp page without mixing html in the servlet as I've done below:
    doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    PrintWriter p = response.getWriter();
    p.print("<html><body>Hello world</body></html>"); //I dont want to do //this, I want to display the JSP site
    doPost(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res)
    //doSomething
    }Message was edited by:

    You should treat your servlet class much like a controller, where you can then use JSP as the view. The way you achieve this is to use the forward() method in RequestDispatcher.
    Say you've got a servlet class org.yoursite.controller.YourController:
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp)
      throws ServletException, IOException {
      //Set some value for use in the JSP file associated wth me
      req.setAttribute("greeting", "Hello world!");
      //Done with our business logic, off we go to the JSP file
      ServletContext app = getServletContext();
        RequestDispatcher disp;
        disp = app.getRequestDispatcher("/some/jsp/file.jsp);
        disp.forward(req, resp);
    }Now in your JSP file:
    <h1>Example</h1>
    <div>
      I just want to say <%= request.getAttribute("greeting") %>
    </div>Going to that servlet now executes business logic and then points to the JSP file for the view. You can forward from servlet to servlet too if needs be. The string you pass to forward() is whatever would be in the URI of the request so any <servlet-mapping> configurations in web.xml are used ;)
    There is some pretty in-depth documentation on the J2EE blueprints website, namely service-to-worker and front-controller patterns. I dare say if you're looking for this sort of code you'll want to look at the composite view pattern too (also on blueprints).

  • Using DPM and maintenance question

    Hi We currently utilize DPM on our ESXi cluster. All ESX' hosts are running version 5.0.0 1918656. We have 2 hosts in standby mode currently. A question I had was if I need to perform maintenance on the storage environment, for example I want to decommission a volume no longer in use, do the standby hosts need to powered on first for them to remove the storage of their own hosts properly or can they be left in standby mode?

    I'm sure with 5.0/5.1 this was the case and one of the reasons we stopped using DPM.

  • Backup and restore questions

    Hi,
    Just wondering that if I upgrade my 6300 to a newer nokia model will I be able to restore contacts from my nokia backups to the new phone?, dont really care about anything else.
    Regards.

    Hi hbarca,
    Yes you can restore the old backup to the new phone.
    All you need to do is attach the new phone to the computer and PC Suite, and press the restore button, selecting the old back up file.
    Hope this helps.

  • Backup and Syncing Question

    My iPod touch was originally synced with my iMac, but it is now synced with my pc. My music, movies and all of that is fine, but my apps were not synced. How can I have my apps synced with the pc, BUT, I don't want to loose any data from my apps. Can I restore from the iTunes backup after the sync wipes the apps, or is there a third party program I can use to make a backup? Thanks.

    connect the iPod to the iMac and make one final sync and backup.  The backup is the first step of a sync. Then move a copy of the iPod backup file to the PC.  The files are located here:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Connect the iPod to the PC and transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
    iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Then restore the iPod from the backup you just moved to the PC. Then sync as necessary.

  • BT Cloud Backup and Upload Questions

    I only found out today that BT Vault was shutting down and that the alternative was BT Cloud. Well as others have said it isn't. Nice of my friend to tell me they were shutting BT Vault down as BT hadn't.
    It appears from what I have readelsewhere that if you set cloud to back up your files and then delete a file from your computer, next time it backs up your files it deletes the one you have deleted from your computer from the cloud as well.
    I have read in other threads that the deleted file goes into the trash area and that it 1) is completely deleted after 90 days 2) stays there indefinately so that if you want it again you can put it back in the cloud and download it to your computer. Which of these is correct? You lose it after 90 days or it stays in the trash indefinately ?
    With the BT Vault I was able to have a separte storage area for files from my computer and one for files from my wifes computer. Is this facility available in the Cloud as I cannot find this option mentioned anywhere ?
    If I chose to upload some files to Cloud it appears they do not get deleted. If I then set the system to back-up the whole directory in which some of these uploaded files reside, will two copies be held in the Cloud ?
    Before I decide whether to use this Cloud faclity or go to the expence of buying an external back-up devise I would appreciate it if somene could assist by answering the above.
    There is a saying that "If it ain't bust don't fix it". Well Bt Vault was not bust and this alternative seems to be nowhere near as good
    Thanks in anticipation of a reply from someone.

  • RMAN backup and TSM question

    We have rman backup file name contains the datetime so it is unique and easy to tell. But TSM keeps every file 4 versions, so the backup file (always 1 version because of unique name) will stay on tape forever. I have no idea about TSM, according to your experience, what is the normal solution here?

  • Robohelp 8 HTML - VERY basic layout and naming question.

    OK, I'm sure this must be obvious to everyone else because I can't seem to find it in the places I've searched. My personal experience with Help files isn't helping (yeah, I know, bad pun).
    I'm creating a RoboHelp HTML file from a PDF file.
    While importing the file I'm given the option to create a new topic based on a style. Great so far. Having done so as an experiment and looked at the output I'm of the feeling that a 'topic' is "an HTML document that would, in theory, cover an area of interest, hence the term topic".
    Then I open IE's help file I see the contents like "Finding the Web Pages You Want" and "Browsing the Web Offline". Neither of them can be selected to show information in the right pane, but both open to show what I'll call 'sub-topics', each of which DOES open what appears to be an html document in the right pane.
    Adobe's help files are a bit easier to deal with, I just navigate to the Help folder and there are all the HTML files.
    So I'm confused and I've got a major mental block that's making it difficult to proceed without getting a layout/hierarchy. And if this information is in Robohelp's help or available someplace online, just smack me in the back of the head and point me in the right direction because I'm not seeing it.
    In the Internet Explorer help, what do I call the links in the left pane on which I can click to bring up a page in the right pane? What do I call the items I can highlight that, when clicked, show a list of the clickable links? And is it accurate that if I ask RoboHelp to create a topic out of each of a given style, then I'll have a separate HTML document for each instance of that style?
    Thanks,
    Solon

    Hi there and welcome to the wonderful wild and wacky world of Help Authoring!
    The area on the left side is typically called a "Navigation Pane". The Navigation Pane usually has different views. Table of Contents (TOC), Index, Glossary and of course, Search.
    The Table of Contents view has a Books and Pages metaphor. Each Book contains Pages inside. Each Page links directly to an individual HTML file (Topic).
    Indeed if you are sucking content in from PDF, RoboHelp has to be told what the criteria is to break the long PDF document into individual HTML topic pages.
    Hopefully this helps a smidge... Rick

  • Basic In and Out Questions

    1. After setting an in and out point during capture, how can these points later be changed?
    2. I have been using "Capture Now" to capture and later cut out the parts of the video that I will not need, using the razor tool. I can see the benefit of using in and out points to be able to change a cut later, is there a way to also restore part of a clip that was previously cut and deleted with the razor?

    so the original clip that resides in capture scratch is not altered at all?
    so are the only changes that are made are the ones to the .fcp file that tells FCP what to do with the file that is in the capture scratch?
    does this sound correct?

    Thanks in advance ...
    - I read/tried all tutorials and documents on the matter

  • Newbie questions about Database replication, "backups", and sql version

    Just created my first Sql Database using the "SQL Database Management Portal". A blast but three questions come to mind:
    1. Is this DB automatically
    "replicated"? (In other words,  is DB "failover" or clustering,  a feature of all newly created Azure databases?)
    2. Our on-premise model is to make a daily DB backup which is saved to a nightly tape. If needed, we can restore a two-month old database backup under a new name to compare it with the current one. Does Sql Azure support this capability
    or not? Can it be requested?
    3.  Which on-premise version of sql is "Sql Azure" closest to? (2014?)
    TIA,
    edm2
    P.S. My database was created using the "web" edition.

    Hi edm,
    According to your description, you create a SQL Azure database in Azure platform. The replication feature is not supported by Microsoft Azure SQL database. If you want to sync the SQL Azure database and local database, you can use SQL Azure Data Sync service.
    For more information, see:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/the_cloud_pilot/archive/2011/10/24/your-first-sql-azure-data-sync-step-by-step.aspx
    In addition, if you have Web or Business Edition databases, you must create your own backup strategy. You can use database copy or Import and Export services to create copies of the data and export the file to an Microsoft Azure storage account. Meanwile,
    Windows Azure SQL Database provides a mechanism for automating the process for exporting a database to BACPAC files on a set interval and frequency. For more information, see:
    Schedule an Automated Export:

    Windows Azure SQL Database Backup and Restore strategy:
    http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/3057/windows-azure-sql-database-backup-and-restore-strategy/
    Currently, Azure uses a special version of Microsoft SQL Server as its backend. It provides high availability by storing multiple copies of databases, elastic scale and rapid provisioning, when we check the version of SQL Server, it shows as follows.
    Microsoft SQL Azure (RTM) - 11.0.9216.62
