Basic networking help

I know this is a basic question but can anyone point me to a guide or tutorial that will help me setup a network between two macs.
I have a AirPort Extreme able iBook G4 and Powerbook G4(my roommate and I) and we are wanting to be able to do three things. It is also wise to note that we are using a Netgear WGR614 v.4 wireless router. We have it set up now that we can both connect to the internet wirelessly and wired without any problems.
I will start here by saying we BOTH have our firewalls off under the 'sharing' folder in Sys Prefs
We want now to be able to transfer files amongst ourselves, browse each others iTunes music, maybe even connect to one anothers printer. In the past we managed to exchange a file through our Public folder's "Drop Box". This took us awhile to sort out what to do and got it to work by chance, then next time tried to do it again and it wouldn't work. Also as it is now I can open my finder and click "Networks" and see and alias to her computer, but I cannot connect it says the ip is incorrect or does not exist. Finally if we both have iTunes open, we can see each others computer listed but cannot connect to one another, odd thing is when either of us is at school on that network we can both see other people's computers and listen to their music, so our settings must be set up right.
So is there a walkthrough, tutorial or guide that may resolve my problems? I have tried a few searches on the net as well as the mac site and nothing has been helpful yet.
re-cap. want to share files across local network. itunes browsing, and printer sharing.
Thanks in advance
mad-elph

The File Sharing information can be found in KB 106461, Mac OS X: About File Sharing.
KB 93365, Finding and Listening to Shared iTunes Music Libraries
For Printer Sharing, on the Mac connected to the printer via USB open the Sharing preference pane and enable Printer Sharing.

Have you contacted your carrier to report the problem? This is not (and can not be) a problem with the phone. It's a problem with your carrier and/or the way they have your service provisioned.

  • Solaris 10 basic network tutorial

    Hi there,
I have a solaris 10 machine and a windows xp machine.
I have them linked up with a cross over cable.
I have set the IP on the windows machine to 192.168.0.100 on a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
What i cannot seem to fathom (although i did manage it on linux, somehow) is how to configure the solaris machine.
Does anyone know of a good BASIC tutorial on how i can get the two machine networked. Basically, i would like to get ftp and telnet working between the machines.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi,
dmesg a system message log viewer.
It will tell you the 'instance name' of your network
card, but a whole lot else about devices and
    boot histories.
So you need to run it, pipe the output into
a grep (search) for network, and pipe the
result of that into a grep for pci. I'm using your
network card will be some kind of PCI card
    Here's what I get:
    # dmesg | grep -i network | grep pci
    Feb 7 19:13:59 ten genunix: [ID 408114 kern.info] /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/network@1,1 (hme0) online
hme0 is therefore my interface name.
'hme' is the driver name, '0' is the first one.
    # man hme
gives you the scarey driver details.
So I need to have /etc/hostname.hme0 in order
to have a hostname. Only one line in the file,
only one word in it -- the same as the hostname
    you supplied in /etc/hosts.
On sparc, the drivers include hme, qfe, eri and le.
On x86, they include bcme and ibprb.
An x86 box with a one broadcom network card
    will have bcme0.

  • Basic Network Monitoring for Cisco Operation Manager 2012

    Hello,
Please bear with me as i'm new the Operations Manager 2012 world. I've just installed operations manager 2012 in our environment and i've setup a network management point. I've discovered my networking gear which is primarily cisco equipment. The devices
are appearing as CERTIFIED. It appears that they are HEALTHY however in most cases i'm getting some arbitrary monitors. I have a 6509 switch where memory and processor appear to be being monitored out of the box. I'm receiving alerts and everything.
My question is how do I turn on monitoring for other discovered components. I seem to understand I can make SNMP monitors under the authoring pane if i know the OID. That sounds like it'd be tedious work for such a simple and basic monitor. However I was
under the impression I would be able to monitor a lot of these components with a simple click of a button. Is this not the case? I'm primarily interested in monitoring the state and performance of particular interfaces as well as the state of the power supplies
in our switches. Is there a guide that explains the basic principles of this. What are my options?
    Thanks!
    -Brandon

    Hi,
You will need to edit the discovery and broaden the range. You may use recursive discovery.
Recursive discovery will try to discover any other network devices it knows about through its Address Routing Protocol (ARP) table, its IP address table, or the topology Management Information Block (MIB) to grow the network map and present all applicable
    devices to you for monitoring.
You can also filter out devices that you don't want to be discovered by using properties such as the device type, name, and object identifier (OID). This is a handy option if you wanted to quickly discover all the network devices in your network except,
a small number or some with a specific criteria.
In really large networks with a lot of network devices, keep in mind that there is a default limit of 1500 network devices that can be discovered recursively. You can of course tweak this limit to suit your environment if you wish, but for most people, this
    won't be needed.
More details, please go through the article below:

  • Airport Express extending the range of my network HELP!

    Greetings!
I know there are similar posts on this topic, but I can't seem to find a solution so I'll just ask again!
Equipment: AirPort Extreme and two Airport Expresses (all are N)
We live in a long house and the AirPort Extreme sits on one end with the cable modem and I'd like to place two AirPort Expresses in the middle and other end of the house so we can get wireless.
I've tried WDS and extended and I can't get them to configure! What can I do? I'm out of ideas and time spend trying to set up an extender!!
    Help!!

Ok, this can be done with a static WDS.
Here is the basic steps to do so:
    Static WDS Setup
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, temporarily connect both 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) to any available LAN port on the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn). When setup is complete, you can then relocate them to the desired locations. Be sure to jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBSn
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the AEBSn.
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select the AEBSn, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. (Note: You may have to hold down the Option key before clicking the menu for this option to appear on the 802.11n models.)
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of AXn#1.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AXn#2
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AXn#2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
Relay Base Station Setup - AXn#1
    o Open AirPort Utility.
o Select AXn#1, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS relay” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the Main AirPort ID field.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the remote base station this relay base station will connect to.
o Click Update to transfer the new WDS settings to the relay and remote base stations.

  • IPhone 4S - Could not scan for wireless networks - help needed please

    Hi
Can anyone offer any advice please.
My 4s has developed an wifi issue. It cant scan for wireless networks My bluetooth is intermittent also.
I have turned it on/off, rebooted, reset all networks, reset to factory settings, set to airplane mode, set to do not disturb - everything and all to no avail.
I am under a two year contract with Vodafone and went into their branch at Merry Hill, Dudley today and they failed to help me saying it was nothing to do with them.
I am at a loss as to what to do. I have not had any accident with my phone and it is still in mint condition.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions on what to do.
    Many thanks.

Apple's out-of-warranty policy is a feeble attempt at covering up it's issues and is a clear cut demonstration for their lack of respect for its user base. Their WIFI/Bluetooth dropping issues have been around for several years now and it started within the last 3 IOS updates. Apple engineers acknowledge this problem and don't have a solution yet... this was confirmed at the Genius Bar at their Nashua, NH outlet. My phone is 6 months passed warranty and my Verizon contract isn't up for renewal for another 6 months.
There are a lot of complaints about this (a LOT), yet Apple continues to stick its head in the sand instead of owning up to providing shoddy hardware and/or glitches software. They certainly don't want to be in the business of replacing phones, so they put the onus on us by charging $200 for a replacement... such a deal for Apple!
Apple's support communities are basically useless on this subject with a lot of screwy so-called solutions to work around their flaws. I've seen one  fix where you heat up the phone with a hairdryer until the temp warning appears and then refrigerate it for 10 minutes... then BINGO, it's all fixed! Ya right!!!
Resetting network settings, or all settings (including a complete reset) is ineffective and appears to do nothing more than to further upset Apple users once they realize that they have wasted their time following Apple's so-called fix.
I just wonder if or when Apple pulls it's collective head out of the sand will they be able to see that their competition has surpassed them by leaps and bounds. There really isn't any good reason to stick with Apple now-a-days since their conscience passed away. Their competition offers superior technology while Apple continues to impress up with new connector technology and placement of their sockets.
I am finished with Apple and am incredibly sick of their spoon feeding what they want rather than what we want.
The best way to make Apple improve is to provide them with a taste of their own WIFI/Bluetooth offerings by DROPPING THEM!
They have abandoned us and have no problem trying to charge us to replace their flawed technology instead of doing the right thing!

  • New iBook G3, needing basic airport help!

I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G3 with an airport card installed. My question is very basic -- one that is probably so simple that an answer isn't necessarily obvious on any of the discussion posts or tutorials I have read. It is this: Do I need one of the Airport Base Stations to connect to the Internet? I have a G4 IMac desktop system that is connected to the Internet via DSL; I would like to be able to have the laptop elsewhere in the house to be on the Internet. I guess I need to purchase the base station, but which one? I don't need anything fancy -- just reliable and easy. And when I get one, will my current DSL modem still work pr be necessary? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the help. So let me make sure I understand. I don't need to buy the Airport Extreme if I only want to connect my laptop to a wireless internet connection but leave my desktop connected to the Ethernet modem? I can buy any wireless compatible base station?
    Thanks for your help!
Also, I have another basic question. I'll also post this in the network forum. With my new iBook G3, I'm having problems connecting to the Internet via Ethernet (using the same settings as my desktop iMac).
When I open Internet Connect, I have the options of Internal Modem, Airport, VPN or 802.1X. I don't have a "Built-in Ethernet" option at the top like on the Internet Connect app on my desktop.
So I choose 802.1X. Under Network Port I choose Built-in Ethernet. I type in what I think is my User Name and Password (the one I use on my desktop Internet Connect). After awhile, it connects (or at least it says it is connected) yet I'm not able to open Safari or any other Internet application — it says File Not Found.
I'm sure it's very basic, but what am I doing wrong???
I have the Ethernet cable connected into the Ethernet port on my laptop. Thanks in advance for help!

  • New iMac can't find photosmart 2610 over network -- HELP

Just got a new iMac 24" 2.8gig with Leopard. Most of the setup went fine, but the computer steadfastly refuses to see my printer over the wireless network. It is an HP Photosmart 2610.
I have used the same printer wirelessly with a MacBook Pro with no problem -- it found it right away, though that was with Tiger (it still worked after it was upgraded to Leopard). It also works great with 3 Windows WP PC's, two wirelessly and one via ethernet.
My Router is a Cisco 800 series and I use a Cisco WAP. The iMac had no problem connecting to the WAP and Internet.
The core problem is the iMac doesn't acknowledge that the printer exists. It doesn't find it automatically and when I direct it to the correct IP is still doesn't find it. Also, Leopard doesn't seem to have the driver for it. When I search for drivers from the pull-down after entering the IP I get a bizillion HP options including many Photosmart's. But the lowest model # without a letter in front of it is the 3300.
I then tried downloading the dirver from HP. It said it installed successfully but still didn't show the driver from the pull-down. When I tried used "other" and directing it straight to the driver it would act like nothing happened and come back to the same pull-down without the 2610 as a choice. I also tried installing HP's entire all-in-one software suite for 10.5. It installed sucessfully but also doesn't see the printer.
I tried temporarily moving the iMac and connecting it to the 2610 via USB. It suddenly found it no problem -- both the iMac software and the HP software. And it worked fine... The moment it was back via network, it doesn't find it despite it still working fine from every other device in the household.
Not sure what there is left to try. It is not an option to permanently have it connected by USB. I spoke with HP and they say that because it works from every other device. They say it is an Apple issue. Apple says it must be an HP driver issue points me back to HP. So I am left in limbo with no functional printing capacity.
I've tried searching the Internet for any reports on this but can't find them. Others seem to be successfully using the 2610, though it is unclear if others were using it via the Network.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am beginning to wonder if HP ceased supporting the network functionality in their 10.5 driver update but I can't get an answer on this.
    Thanks.

To be specific, since the Apple Printers and Faxes function does not find it in the "Default" list, I select "IP" and then enter the valid IP address that I know to be for the printer. I have tested it multiple times from other devices to confirm the IP address and even printed a network diagnostics page from the printer to confirm it. I even had someone else review it for typos just to cross every base...
It then accepts it as a "valid" IP address and assigns it a "Generic Postscript Printer." I then chose the pull down for "other" drivers. I just checked again. There is no driver called "HP IP". There are hundreds of HP drivers those. I am looking for the HP Photosmart 2600 series. But the lowest series they list is the HP Photosmart 3100 series.
Again, I have covered all the bases I can think of. The Apple site lists the 2600 series as an included driver in Leopard but it isn't showing up. The HP site lists the 2610 as "Leopard ready." I have downloaded and run the OX 10.5 HP 2600 series driver executable from HP and it says it was successful (tried several times). I also downloaded and installed the entire stupid 400-and-something MB software "all-in-one" software suite for the 2600 series from HP. You can run its own setup program indpependent of the Apple one and it doesn't find it either. When you enter the IP is says it found no printer and refuses to continue the setup. I have turned the printer on and off many times and checked all the connections. I have confirmed that the other PC's in the household are in fact seeing it at that IP...
I have spoken with Apple Tech Support ("it must be an HP driver issue, sorry") and HP tech support ("it must be a problem with your Mac because it works for others... but perhaps we can sell you a new printer that should work better" (no kidding, they actually tried to do this!).
On principle (and practical) grouns I am reluncant to get a new printer when the one I have works perfectly well for everything accept this Mac. But I am totally out of options unless someone can help.

  • Home wireless network help!

Ok... So I recently moved to a new house, and moved my Internet service. Im with AT&T and I had DSL. I was supposed to have next day installation because I work from home and take classes from home and every day I go without Internet costs me money. However, they told me that DSL was not available in my area. I ordered Uverse and I ended up having to wait a week and a half for them to install that, only to find out that the couldn't because the cable box is too far away from my house... But they said I could get DSL. Anyway, long story short, it's been two months, I had to drop two classes which has cost me almost $3,000 alone, and I haven't had any income because I can't work.
I have Internet now, however the way AT&T set it up mean i had to get a new modem. My old set up involved a 2wire router/modem connected to a time capsule in bridge mode. It worked like a dream and I was able to have my laptop, desktop, ps3, 360, wii and two iPhones connected to it all at once with no problems. Now I have a motorola modem connected to the time capsule. All of my devices are detecting my wifi network, but non of them can connect. The ps3 times out trying to obtain an ip address, the phones connect to the network but continue to use 3G, and my laptop gives me the "another device is already using this ip address" message.
What do I need to do to get everything up and running again? I'm sick of typing and browsing with my iPhone and not having Internet. In my case time really is money... Anything any of you can offer to possibly help would be greatly appreciated....

Resetting the Time Capsule back to factory defaults will not affect your backups in any way, as the reset only affects network configuration settings, not the Time Capsule disk.
I'm not sure if you will be able to make much progress without an internet connection, but if you want to try, here is the sequence of events:
If it's not already, connect the ethernet cable from the modem directly to your Mac
Open your browser and type in 192.168.1.254 into the address bar and press Enter. This should bring up the modem configuration pages, which you have already seen.
Click on the Advanced tab/label on the left
Click on the PPP Location tab/label
Select the option for "PPP is on the computer (router)"
Click Save and the modem will restart with the new settings
Important...if you ever need to return the modem back to its new, out of box configuration, hold in the reset button on the back of the modem for 8-10 seconds, then release. It will restart with original default settings.
Connect the ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN (circle of dots icon) port on the Time Capsule.
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Connect Using = PPPoE
Enter your user name (probably your email address with the provider) and password. Confirm password.
+Important...leave the Service Name area completely blank+
    Connection = Always On
    Disconnect if Idle = Never
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart in 25-30 seconds.
You may need to restart both the modem and Time Capsule again. With no internet connection, you won't be able to test for connectivity, but when the service comes back on, you should have an internet connection on the Time Capsule. Post back on your progress.
You will probably need to reset Time Machine to get backups going again as follows:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Select Disk
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups

  • I can see my Maxtor drive, but it's not showing up on My Network- help!!

Hi there- Just installed my shiny, new WRT 610-N and have hit what appears to be a common problem.
BTW- I've searched the boards for a solution, so forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere and I just missed it....here's the story:
I can't access my external storage drive, that's plugged into the Cisco router. I can see it's obviously wired up properly, as it appears on Network Magic, but not on 'My Computer'.
I've tried to MAP the drive, as directed, but several XP components seem to be missing.
Also no problems LOGGING IN to the router-  and under the 'Storage' tab, my Maxtor One-Touch II appears, clear as day, formatted to NTFS (but appearing as 'FAT' under the 'File System" column)
    Confirmed the following settings:
-I'm running Windows XP, and like others here I'm not showing the 'Network Tasks' bar within 'Network Connections'.
Further, for the command string Explorer>Tools>Map Network Drive, I'm NOT getting the option to map the drive!!! ARRGH!
-I have checked the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer, and NoNetConnectDisconnect is enabled (1).
-The workgroup name under the routers 'administration' tab and my computer name are also matching, so no conflict there.
-I've assigned network access to another storage drive that's attached DIRECTLY to my cpu tower,  and no problems exist with it.
-I'm running as the admin under XP with S/P 3 installed.
This would seem to be a registry issue but I can't solve it with the solutions posted elsewhere...anyone else finding issues with mapping external drives??
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.

First take the back of data you have on the hard drive then if you are able to see the hdd under storage tab then try to format the drive using the router utility. Now check if you can map the drive.

  • My Apple TV can no longer find my network - help?

I've been using my apple tv for a LONG tme successfully until tonight.
It can no longer find my network (airport network)!
Resetting/restarting the apple tv has not helped. I can't update anything because it can't connect to the internet (even though my computer and phones and even roku are connecting just fine).
I've tried restarting everything (airport, internet box, apple tv) as well as plugging and unplugging things...
I had noticed a few times it was having trouble connecting but restarting seemed to fix it. My apple tv is from last year so it's not old.
    Any suggestions?

  • Apple Remote app on wired network: help please

I am trying to use the remote app to control my apple tv. I noticed that my bedroom apple tv unit was showing up in my app but not the living room apple tv. After further inspection I found that the ethernet cable was not plugged into the bedroom apple tv unit so I was on wifi to control the apple tv.
We do a lot of streaming in my house and having 4 apple tv's on wifi would just kill the streaming. From what I see, the device(iPhone) using the remote app and the Apple TV you want to control have to be on the same wifi network.
Is there a way to use the remote app when the apple tv's are connected via ethernet cable? They are still on the same network but the app doesn't recognize them if they are on ethernet.
Basically if I unplug my ethernet cables from the apple tv's the app works but when the ethernet is plugged in the app doest see the apple tv's present. Any way around this issue>

I am definitely on the same network. After about an hour I finally got it to work. My apple tv was plugged into my apple wifi router which is connected to a 24 port switch. I connected the apple tv directly to the switch and it came up instantly. I then plugged it back into the apple router and it continued to work. I am not sure why none of the apple tv's would not initially work when plugged in directly to the router since it is the same network. So I did this to all the apple tv's and they are all now working.
Home sharing was enabled on all the apple tv's. The only thing I did was connect to switch first(got a good connection via the app) then reconnected it to the apple wifi router.

  • 3.5G symbol no longer appearing 3 network - HELP

    Hi all,
For my sins and my stupidity I have a Nokia 6700.. I won't bore you with the other issues I have with this phone... NOKIA PLEASE HELP!!
    Well here goes.......
I have had my 6700 for about 3 months now I am on the 3 network.. For the first couple of months I was getting a great internet signal with the 3.5G symbol and a little up arrow appearing in the top left of the screen.. Internet was very quick.. I have noticed that in the last 2 weeks I no longer get this symbol appearing but just the 3G one and my internet speed has dropped accordingly. Does anyone know why this might be or if anyone else has noticed a similar issue on 3??? 3 are about as much help as a chocolate teacup, their support is attrocious!!
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

It's a purely a network issue.  It's likely to be a transmitter fault in that area so it's unable to provide HSDPA (3.5g). It happened to me earlier this year just before I told 3 where to stick their contract.
I also had issues with 3 where SMS messages weren't being delivered to me until many hours later or until the same person sent another message.
