Batch Resize to Fit Minimum Dimensions

I frequently need to resize multiple images (both horizontal and vertical) to have a common minimum dimension. Specifically I need all the images to be 3000 pixels on the short side. I am struggling to find a way to do this. I am comfortable using actions but I don't have experience writing my own scripts - which seems to be a lot more complicated than I had anticipated.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you much!

Normally when you resize an image you want to retain the image's aspect ratio so its not distorted.  You also normally want the resized image it to fit within some area like a display screen. Not a minimum # of pixel on a side.    You would have no idea what the other long side would be if the original image can have any aspect ratio.  For example your 3000 small side minimum might men you would have to increase the number of pixel an image has.  I just stitched 13 portrait oriented image from my old 5MP camera.  The resultant croped panorama hight was only 2300 pixels when I did you resize and increased the height to the minimum 3,000 pixels the width grew to over 22,000.
Its the maximum length a side can be you want to use. Can be 3000 x 3000 area or something like a HDTV 1920 x 1080. they need not be the same.   The resize image maximum side will be the width or height set depending on the the aspect ratio of the image being resized.
Photoshop ships with a plug-in named "Fit Image" to do this.
With scripting is also possible to resize the image to fill the output area center the possible oversize image over the area  and mask off or crop off any excess. The result will look like a centered crop.  I do that in my Collage and image lay out scripts.  Results are not always good for Landscape compositions do not make good Portrait composition and portraits don't make good landscapes.  However center crops are sometime acceptable and the composition can be tweaked when done with masking.
Note here how Landscape into Portrait and Portrait into Landscape look.

  • Bug in LR 5.6 export "Resize to Fit: Dimensions" feature?

A site that I shoot for requires uploaded photos to be EXACTLY 3000 x 2216 pixel JPGs. In LR 5.6 I created a custom crop aspect 3.000 x 2.216 (~1.354:1). When I export the images, I set the "Resize to fit" parameters to be "Dimensions" and 3000 x 2216 pixels (also, "Don't enlarge" is OFF, and resolution is 300 ppi). However, most of the Nikon D800 RAW photos I export this way end up being 2992 x 2216. For example I cropped an image using the custom aspect and the dimensions became 3320 x 4495, which is also ~1.354:1. However when I export this using the above "resize to fit" parameters, the resulting image is 2216 x 2992.Another image cropped to 4194 x 5677 correctly exported at 2216 x 3000.
Is this a bug or am I misunderstanding something here.

Sorry, Bob, you are confusing the "resize to width and height" setting, which preserves aspect ratio, with the "resize to fit dimensions" setting, which is supposed to set the exact dimensions, even if it changes the aspect ratio.
    From the Lightroom help pages:
Dimensions - Applies the higher value to the longer edge of the photo and the lower value to the shorter edge regardless of the photo’s original aspect ratio. Specifying 400 x 600, for example, produces a 400 x 600 portrait photo or a 600 x 400 landscape photo.
I'm pretty sure this is a bug, but I can't figure out a workaround other than to write a Photoshop action to fix the dimensions after I export them.

  • Can Photoshop Batch Resize Tiff Files?

I have quite a number of tiff files that I want to resize in terms of page dimensions and retain the same resolution / dpi. Can Photoshop batch resize tiff files?

Yes Photoshop ships with a plugin Fit image you can record an action to re-size an image to fit within some number of pixels.  Image resolution setting and aspect ratio are not changed however the number on pixels the image will have will be less then or equal to the pixels size set.    For example if you set width and height to 2000px the largest size image you could have after the operation would be 1:1 aspect ratio square 4MP 2000x2000.  If your image has a landscape aspect ratio the re-sized image will be 2000px wide by less then 2000px high and if Portrait the re-sized is will be 2000px high be less then 2000px wide.  Bicubic Interpolation for the re-size.
Once you record the single step action.  You can batch the action.  You can have batch open the image files and save over the original files or have batch save the resized files in a different location. Fit Image and Batch are both found in menu File>Automate>

  • Probably simple batch resize question  :_

Hi, I am trying to create an action to batch resize a folder of images, and when I hit Run, I am asked for the jpeg quality for every file, which defeats the purpose of creating an action.
I am using File>Automate>Fit Image  Inputting dimensions, hitting OK, and stop recording.
What am I doing wrong please?

Is the Destination > Save and Close?
Have you tried using File > Scripts > Image Processor without any Action?

  • Hello, how can i batch resize, landscape and portrait pictures?

Hello i'm new in CS6 and i wonder, is there a way to batch portrait and landscape pictures simultaneously and keep the   aspect ratio of the type?

    Batch Conversion:
Select the Output Format at bottom left. This works just like Save and Save As. The Options button lets you choose from the various file format specific save options, just like the Save and Save As dialog.
Use the Set advanced options button to apply many special operations to the images during conversion. These options are much like their versions on the Image Menu. The options are:
Crop, Resize, Change color depth, Auto adjust colors, Horizontal flip, Vertical flip, Rotate left, Rotate right, Convert to greyscale, Negative, Sharpen, Brightness, Contrast, Gamma correction, Saturation, Color balance, etc.
Hint: for Batch Resize: If you set both, width and height, to e.g. 640 and activate the preserve aspect ratio option, the result image dimensions are: width = max. 640, height = max. 640, proportional.
The option Create subfolders in destination folder will create a similar folder structure in the destination folder to the original file path.
Note: conversion to a multipage PDF is not yet possible in batch mode, only in the Save-as menu.
This is from the help file of Irfanview, a free program (www.irfanview.com)
Note the hint. I have not used the program for this purpose. You may wish to install this program.

There will be a set of Landscapes that that have a narrower aspect ratio the 1960:1103 that would also need the top and bottom cropped like all Portraits would could be.  You need to realize that center cropping Landscape image that have aspect ratios near 1960:1103 will usually produce acceptable compositions.  However Cropping wide panoramas and portraits will only produce acceptable landscape  1960:1103 composition occasionally.
Here you will see what happens when image have aspect ratio the do not fit the desired aspect ratio.  Where Landscape  are forced to portrait and portrait forced to Landscape.  Here are two Collage I populated with a mixture of image  with different  aspect ratios.   One collage has all 3:2 Landscape places and the other 2:3 Portrait places.
I create a 1 image 1960x1103 collage 72dpi and create those too. Note the landscape boy foot is cropped off 3:2 is narrow compared to 1960:1103

Using AirPlay mirroring, how do you make the window full screen / or to fit the dimensions of your tv?

    >I read that it was supposed to show up when you turned on your apple tv.
That is not even remotely true.  First off the Mac has to be new enough to even support AirPlay.  Second is AirPlay enabled on the Mac?  Turning it on on ATV does nothing to to the Mac you are trying to use.   If it is supported on the Mac, and AirPlay is enable on the Mac did you add the AirPlay user Id/password to the Mac to enable the AirPlay connection?

  • Batch Resizing within Aperture?

    Greetings-
I shoot 400-600 images a day, thus I'm beginning to run out of hard drive space. I don't want to create a new vault of pictures on an external drive.  I'm willing to reduce the overall size of my photos in order to create some space on my drive.
I'm at a loss how to batch resize groups of images in Aperture. It was an easy function in iPhoto.

I don't want to skip a step, lose sharpness, image cropping/adjustments, or mess up my project/folder/album file structure in this process.
What's the best way to do this and can it be done safely en masse? (We're talking about 120,000+ images)
You just perfectly described a Referenced-Masters workflow. It works great for 200k+ images, the Library with its Previews lives on the internal drive and is always accessible. Masters live on external drives. The Library is backed up via Vaults and originals are backed up to redundant locations using the Finder before import into Aperture.
Personally I have images managed on the internal SSD until editing is complete then convert to Referenced-Masters.
IMO referenced Masters make far more sense than building huge managed-Masters Libraries.
    • Hard disk speed. Drives slow as they fill so making a drive more full (which managed Masters always does) will slow down drive operation.
    • Database size. Larger databases are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller databases are.
    • Vaults. Larger Library means larger Vaults, and Vaults are an incremental repetitive backup process, so again larger Vaults are by definition more prone to "issues" than smaller Vaults are. One-time backup of Referenced Masters (each file small, unlike a huge managed-Masters DB) is neither incremental nor ongoing; which is by definition a more stable process.
Managed-Masters Libraries can work, but they cannot avoid the basic database physics.

  • How to resize to fit paper size? I have Envy 7640 printer.

I accidentally was able to resize a photo the other day to fit the paper.  Now when I want to do it, I can't figure out how to do it.    I have a Mac.  Thank you in advance.

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you are wondering how to resize to fit paper size, with your HP Envy 7640 on a Mac. I am happy to help! What version of the Mac Operating System are you using? If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos. What is the name of the program you are printing from? In the meantime, please see this article, OS X Mountain Lion: Scale a document to fit your printer’s paper, as I am sure the settings are universal between Mac OS X Operating Systems. Hope this works!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”

  • Color correction in batch resizing.

Anyone know good method for batch resizing that doesn't mess up color correction? I have a huge textile swatch library that I would like to batch to a resize, but when I batch resize the fabric textures compress or expand creating a tonal shift. Any good work arounds?

Remove Color Cast is relative simple:
    Add the Fast Color Corrector.
Sample an area with the eyedropper from the White Balance' while holding ctrl key down that is supposed to be white.

  • How do I batch resize 5,000 photos via PS CS4 Extended?

I have 5,000 photos that I took with my Go Pro camera in hopes to make a timelapse movie in Premiere. These photos come out of the camera roughly 1900x1200, and I'm interested in resizing all of them. I know that there are ways to do batch resizing, but after searching the web for hours I cannot find a tutorial that is much if any help in this matter. Help? Clearly resizing each photo would take WAY too much time, especially when discussing 5,000 photos.

I would use Bridge select you photos and then clck on Tools/Image Processor.
There you can set the size you want.
Would suggest you try it with a few before you go whole hog.

  • Picture can not be resized to fit the screen, so i can only see half of my face when use it as wallpaper!! Suckss!!

picture can not be resized to fit the screen, so i can only see half of my face when use it as wallpaper!!  How can I change it??

There's a bug with the wallpaper. One thing that helps a bit, go to the photos app, find your pic, 'send' it to be wallpaper. You have a bit more control although not all the function you're used to.
No idea when or if Apple will fix it.

  • Problem trying to batch resize images from bridge.

I am trying to batch resize images from bridge. I am on windows 7 desktop and using CC, I select the images in bridge, tool bar>tools>photoshop>image processor. After doing this, photoshop CC opens but no images open.

open photoshop, open actions pallette, click new action (windows > actions (or Alt+f9)), click record, open your image, resize it, click stop action.
then use file> automate > batch
the action you just recorded will be ready to use, select the folder with all your photos (wise to work on a duplicated folder incase you mess up)
run the action.  wait while photoshop opens and resizes the images one by one.
check in folder if the images resized how you expected.

  • CS4 Image Processor: Why does "Resize to Fit" kill my action?

I had some JPEG's that had some dark shadows.  I already had a custom action in CS4 that was worked for what I needed that I could use with the image processor.  What I did was just open, do my action and save as a JPEG.
    The existing action simply was:
    Convert to Smart Object
    Shadow/Highlight
    Smart Sharpen
    Create Vibrance Layer
It worked fine until I added the "Resize to Fit" option in the Image Processor dialog.
While I could see the actions being stepped through, the final photo was just a resized version of the original without actions applied.
    Why?
I used to do this in CS2...I thought.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your response.
I had already ended up using the "Fit Image" command which works...but the point is that I wanted run the script on several sets of images for different purposes which required specific sizes.  It's convenient to do that in the "Image Processor" dialog when I run each set.  I don't want to have to edit the action each time I do a different group of photos.
It's more a question of why this does not work than finding an alternate ways to accomplish the task.
i.e. Is it a bug or a misunderstanding on my part?
    Thanks again,
    JJJ
