  • Battery with 27 cycles NOT charging - stuck on 62% with Amperage (mA): 0

    Hi All,
I replaced a 312 cycles bulging battery last October with a third party one that has been fine until last night. My son was playing WOW (which was running from his external firewire HDD) and also watching a DVD while running on the battery ONLY. It suddenly shut down with the battery at 62% and now will not run off the battery. When the magsafe charger is connected it starts up OK, but the LED on the plug remains green, and battery info says -
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5957
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3719
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 11610
    Cycle Count: 27
    AC Charger Information:
    Connected: Yes
    Charging: No
I have searched this part of the forum for possible solutions, and reset the SMC, with no change to the situation. I have not yet tried resetting the PRAM. This morning I was able to try a battery from another MacbookPro, and it started up and ran fine, and the charger when connected went orange and charged correctly. This would seem to confirm that all is OK with my MacbookPro's SMC and that the problem lies with the battery status not now being correctly "seen" by the MacbookPro. I read somewhere in my searches that the battery has its own microchip controller, and so am wondering if the sudden shutdown was due to the battery current capacity being exceeded by the demands of the fully worked processor running WOW, and the external firewire drive plus DVD running - and the software running the battery's controller becoming corrupted. If this was the case, can the battery controller be fixed, "re-booted" or re-installed somehow? Anyway, any advice will be gladly received at this point, even if the news is that my son's actions have now "killed" the battery and its time for another one!

Thanks Michael and Rod for your responses, and thanks Rod for suggesting the local battery specialist who I will contact tomorrow. In the meantime, casting my search wider through Google, looking for information on how to possibly re-condition MacbookPro batteries, I found some information in another forum that stated:
+sudden shutdown is a very clear symptom of a failed internal cell.+
    >
+> > it sounds like there may be a defective cell in the battery.+
    >
+> If a cell where defective, would it register 96% of the original on+
    +> coco?+
+sure. the cell can be charged, it just doesn't hold the charge for very+
+long. That cell is first to discharge and then it might reverse charge+
+from the other healthy cells. The output voltage of the battery pack+
+drops, and if it drops below the minimum to run the computer, it+
+suddenly shuts down with no warning.+
. . . so I am now wondering if the battery may have one cell that is not as good as the others, and the intensive drain caused the sudden shutdown when the battery voltage dropped when that cell was depleted. If that was the case, the battery may be fine for normal use for many cycles yet if the depleted cell can be given a kick start possibly by a battery re-condition expert such as you suggest. I will follow this course and report their findings.
    Thanks!

    TY for the help

    This is quoted from apple.com...
"A properly maintained Apple notebook battery is designed to retain up to 80 percent of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles."
So you would see only 80% of the original battery life at 300 cycles on a battery that was maintained "properly".
At 228 you have used it quite a bit, depending on how well it was maintained (I don't see any information to suggest what "maintained" means) It very well may be dropping off and needs replacement.

  • Battery at 55% Capacity with 339 cycles - Acceptable?

My battery is at 55% capacity (3027mAh compared to original 5500mAh) with 339 cycles. Battery is 18 months old. Is this about normal or is my battery showing a little more wear than it should?

According to iStat, here are my stats:
    Cycle count: 807
    Health: 98%
    Condition: Good
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4903
Yes, you read that right. 800+ cycles and still in wonderful health. She gets about 2.5 hours of hard use on battery and can still get over 4 hours without wifi & bluetooth. As a college student who uses my mac w/o it plugged in daily in class, I get at least one cycle put on it a day. Obviously it isn't truly about the "cycles" but in how you manage your use. I hardly ever turn my mac off, she sleeps at night with me. I do manage my power wisely with iStat and Fan Control. Helps me maximize the time I can pull out of the battery. I'll drain the power to under 10% every time. At least once a week, if not more, I'll let her black out on me before I resuscitate her with outlet power. Here and there, when she blacks out, I'll just close the lid and await her till morning to give her power. This will completely drain even the reserve battery. I laugh when I do this because it takes my mac about 10 to 15 minutes till she says 1%. I know I probably sound like a lunatic, but what I been doing has obviously worked, so I can't imagine it not working for you. Go crazy and drain your mac a couple times in a week and I bet you'll see a good improvement. Oh, I never leave my mac plugged in when it's at 100%... so take that for what it's worth.

  • Battery health 96% with only 18 cycles

A month ago I bought a brand new unit of the last version of the old 17" model. iStat Pro recognized the battery as new with 100% health. 30 days later it shows 18 cycles and 96% health. To what extent this information is trustworthy? Can I ask for a replacement if that fast aging process continues?

Don't worry about it too much. My battery's capacity level swings several percentage points even if I check it at different times during the same day. You will probably find that the deterioration rate will not continue linearly, but will stop and even reverse at times.
Battery readings fluctuate normally because a battery is made up of many cells that all behave slightly differently and deteriorate at different rates. It's hard to accurately track/predict the performance of all of the cells as a group; the number is always more like an estimate.
Apple has a standard that its batteries should retain 80% capacity after 300 cycles. Apple might not replace the battery until you can show that the battery is going to fall short of it at that time, and it takes about a year to get to 300 cycles.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina 15inch is showing up as 1.9months old with 2 cycles on 'Battery Health'!?

    Hi,
I've just recieved my New Macbook Pro Retina 15inch and installed 'Battery Health', but for some reason it is is showing my Macbook as 1.9months old with 2 cycles!? This Macbook isn't even a day old.. Is this normal!?
    Please advise..
    Thanks,
    P

That is not unusual.  Note that the actual maximum charge is well above the designed level which is the most important criteria.
    Ciao.

  • What can I do: Macbook Battery need replace at 103 cycle

I have my Macbook late-2006 and suddenly the battery do not charge at cycle 103.
I tried to talk to guys at Apple Store but the only thing they can do is to sell me a new battery.
In fact, the battery was in recall before 2009 but I was not be able to send it back at that time.
If the battery die only at cycle 103, is this normal? feel so upset...

If you have a MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay.

  • Battery life past 300 load cycles?

I've got this battery from a recall about a year and a half ago (not sure exactly when). It has 319 load cycles and I have noticed that I have only been getting about 45 mins to a charge, down from about 3 hours. Right now the current capacity is at 1659 mAh down from 4400 mAh, 37% of the original capacity.
Is it unusual for a battery to be this low already? I feel like I just got the thing.

For some reason, there have been a number of people posting that their recall batteries are short lived. Typical recommendation is to return it to Apple, to see if they'll do anything. They do consider the battery to be a consumable item, and with 319 cycles on it, they may not be inclined to replace it. However, you don't know if you don't ask. The Apple note on battery maintenance says a well-maintained battery should retain 80% capacity after 300 cycles. Here's the note: http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html

  • Battery health is 78%, 479 cycles, 3 year old Macbook Pro 13" 2010. Time to purchase new battery?

I have a 2010 13" Macbook Pro that has a battery that constantly remains at about 78% of the original capacity. I have gone through 479 cycles and I only recharge when the battery is less than 10%. It doesn't matter what I do because it always remains around this range of health. What should I do? Should I purchase a new battery?

why not just use your macbook as it is until the service battery messages shows up.
i have 2010 Macbook Pro with 913 cycle count - 84% Battery Health and I still get almost 5 hours of normal use.

I'm afraid you'll have to get the phone serviced, dropping the phone must have damaged additional parts inside the phone.
But Apple will not service the phone anymore, opening the phone and replacing the battery should only be done by authorized personal, not by users.
You'll have to look for a 3rd party repair shop and see if they can fix this, sorry.

  • Will the Stitchway UltraPower 1900 mAh Backup Battery Charger work with the Apple iPhone 4S?

Will the Stitchway UltraPower 1900 mAh Backup Battery Charger work with the Apple iPhone 4S?

I see no reason why it shouldn't. At prices I've seen down to $4.39, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try. That's cheaper than a sandwich!

That's strange, because no where in the iPhone's limited warranty does it state "365 days", but it does state 1 year. I think the only way they could get out of that is because of the battery, which is not covered by the warranty. HOWEVER, it is stated on AT&T's website that claims are handled from 31-365 days, which would explain why the Apple people acted as such. I know you have Verizon, but since it is (essentially) the same device, it's under the same warranty.
    http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?cv=820&sid=KB64687#fbid=MG9VDbF7hX1
Many people have had stories about issues happening as soon as their warranty expires, with products in general.
I'd just consider upgrading, and selling your old one.

  • Why isn't my iPad2 charging its battery when connected with my iMac?

Why isn't my iPad2 charging its battery when connected with my iMac?

A lot of computers, especially older ones (I don't know how old yours is), don't provide enough power through their USB ports in order to charge the iPad - it may still be charging, but at a low rate (it may charge quicker if the iPad's screen is off). If you want to charge it at a reasonable rate then the wall charger is better.

  • Powerbook G4 won't charge battery or run with power adapter plugged in.

My Titanium Powerbook G4 will not charge the battery or run with the power adapter plugged in. When plugged in the power adapter doesn't change to amber showing its charging. Instead it has a green light that flashes off and on. I thought it was a defective power adapter but when its plugged in to another powerbook its seems to be working properly. I reset the PMU but that didn't help. I have been unable to find anything that would tell me what a flashing green means.
    Powerbook Titanium G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Marshall. With no power being supplied to the Mac for several months, not only has your main battery gone flat (and may never again be able to take a charge), but your internal backup battery has also gone flat. A Tibook with a dead backup battery generally will not start up at all, even with AC power connected.
Try this: remove the main battery and leave the AC power adapter connected overnight in an attempt to recharge the backup battery. If the Powerbook won't start in the morning under AC power, the backup battery is shot, has lost the ability to be charged, and must be replaced.
If the PB starts up in the morning on AC power, set the date and time correctly, shut the computer down, insert the main battery, and allow 48 hours with AC power connected in an attempt to charge the main battery. Then disconnect the AC adapter and try to start up under battery power. If that doesn't work, and no lights or only one flashing light appear when you press the power-indicator button on the battery, you'll have to replace the main battery.
