Battery capacity went down, overnight

So i bought my MBP Nov 06, and since then it has been working great. Then about half a year ago i would find that the battery, when discharged completely, and then charged back up, would have significantly less max capacity then it did the day before. I would then use the computer for a while, not on AC power, and the max capacity would jump back up to 99% or so, as stated in coconut battery but it can easily be calculated by dividing my current capacity from 5500mAh, from anywhere between 60% and 80%. I didn't think of it too much, but then a few weeks ago, it did it again, but now it is not going back up to the max capacity. It is staying at 67%-68%. The battery only has 74 load cycles on it, and it has been at 99% for about a year, since i don't use it on battery that much. I found this:
http://www.apple.com/support/macbook...batteryupdate/
However it looks like it only extends the warranty of the battery on CD MBP, not the C2D. But this shouldn't matter, my battery is terrible, and i just noticed last night that it was charging for five hours. I thought it would have finished, but it just kept going, and was down to 47% max capacity. Then i left it in sleep mode, and it used 10% battery, and went back up to 67% this morning. Any suggestions, otherwise over christmas break i'll bring it to an Apple store.
Here are the details:
Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3739
Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3722
Amperage (mA): 196
Voltage (mV): 12632
Cycle Count: 74

They certainly haven't charged me. The on-line instructions said you'd need to take the machine into an authorised dealer or such, fairly inconvenient from where I live, but I just phoned the number given for UK service (see http://www.apple.com/support/contact/phone_contacts.html for worldwide contact details) and described the problem. I started by saying that the MBP was certainly out of warranty but that I believed the battery failure fell within their extended warranty period as described on their web site. I'd got full details ready - serial numbers of the MBP and of the battery and all the information about the battery from System Profiler - which was really all a dealer could have checked. They agreed to send me a new battery for free and a pre-paid label for returning the old one: they wanted credit card details and, not unreasonably, will charge me if I don't return it. I got a couple of helpful emails from the guy I spoke to (in one of Apple's Indian call centres) withing two minutes of putting the phone down and an order reference quickly followed by a dispatch notification within ten minutes. I've been critical of Apple's service before, but this was exemplary.
It was pretty clear that my problem fitted into one of the categories listed in the url I gave in the previous post and I'm not sure that yours does, but it can't do any harm to ask.

  • Battery capacity going down way too fast

So problem is that my mbp 13" is about 2 weeks old and battery capacity seems to going down too fast. I only have 2 cycles and I did calibration 4 days ago. When I bought it, it was like 5770 or smth and now it's 5500. Think it's normal or maybe it's just wrong info there?

  • IBook G4 Battery Capacity Way Down

I've had this computer for 12 months now, and noticed that the battery doesn't last more than an hour anymore. I grabbed CoconutBattery, and found that its Maximum Battery Charge is 1127 mAh, about 25% of the battery's original capacity. It has also had 215 cycles.
I've tried resetting the nvram, and the PMU (hit shift-ctrl-option-power, but nothing happened so I am not sure if the PMU was actually reset) and I'm still stuck where I am.
Is there any hope for this battery, or is it time to replace it?

My 14" 1.2ghz iBook was purchased in June 2004. We went to Colorado in August 2004 and my daughter was able to play one of the Lord of the Rings DVDs and most of the trailers before the iBook shut down.
This weekend coming back from Thanksgiving she was watching Lord of the Rings again and only got 2 hours and 42 minutes before the iBook shut down. She never got a warning displayed while the DVD was running but I have seen it when just in the Finder. Shouldn't an OS warning override any application even a DVD in full screen?
When I got home I downloaded Capacity Meter and it only shows 3302mah out of 4600mah! Only 51 cycles are shown also. I ran this Terminal command to verify it also:
    ioreg -l | grep -i IOBatteryInfo
I found this link on the Apple support site
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
There was this paragraph on the page:
    Battery Lifespan
A properly maintained PowerBook or iBook battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 300 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs.
My iBook is kept on power most of the time but occasionally I'll use it on the couch for an hour or so then plug it in. I've done a few discharges to where I get the warning dialog then I'll recharge it.
I was expecting the capacity to be down somewhat but it's only 72%. I have Applecare. Is this battery warrantable since I have only 51 cycles vs the 300 listed above? I see Newer Tech has higher capacity batteries. Are these batteries better, i.e. new chemistry?
    Thank for any advice.

  • Battery Capacity dramatic drop overnight

My power adapter was behaving stragely, so I took my battery out and put it back in. According to coconutBattery, my battery was at 92% of orig. capacity yesterday, and only 84% today! I don't know when excactly the change took place, but it seems very mysterious and troubling. Any idea what could have caused this?
    Thanks!

Hi. If you haven't calibrated your battery yet, now would be a good time to do so. Also, it would be better to read the info off system profiler. Check that and see if the same it has the same info. Also, resetting the SMC could help. Here are the links.

  • Low Battery Capacity?

Hello everyone, I'm a new Mac User, and I'm new to laptops in general. I have noticed that after owning my mac for approx. 6 weeks, the battery life has not been as great as some people seem to be getting on this forum. I calibrated the battery as soon as I took the computer out of its box, but it seems that even with the screen brightness on its lowest, airport and bluetooth off, I can squeeze maybe three hours out of it. I downloaded the app Coconut battery, and it says that my Maximum battery capacity is 4883 mAH and its original was 5200. Does this seem low to anyone? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I've been monitoring my battery capacity with Coconut Battery for about 2 weeks now and have some interesting results:
    Date Max Capacity
    2006-06-30 97% (5084 mAh)
    2006-07-01 90% (4729 mAh)
    2006-07-02 95% (4984 mAh)
    2006-07-03 96% (5006 mAh)
    2006-07-04 96% (5006 mAh)
    2006-07-07 95% (4977 mAh)
    2006-07-14 96% (5038 mAh)
    2006-07-16 88% (4585 mAh)
    2006-07-17 97% (5063 mAh)
    2006-07-20 97% (5059 mAh)
It also indicates that I have 53 cycle loads. But I have only calibrated the battery twice.
I was under the impression that battery capacity steadily went down with use but the results seems to indicate that is can go up and down. One thing I did notice was that my capacity went down fairly dramatically early on (about one week in to owning the MacBook) from 5200 mAh down to about 5050 mAh.
I'm wondering if CoconutBattery is giving correct readings or if it's just my limited knowledge of battery life. If anyone spots anything unusual going on with my battery I'd interested to know.

  • Charged battery says 8hrs, used for 2min and it went down to 4hrs....Why?

I fully charged my macbook (purchased 11/09). The battery icon at the top of screen said i had 8hrs remaining. I used the laptop for 2 mins on the internet and checked to see how much time it used up ( I believe when I bought the computer it said something about the battery charge lasting 7hrs and I new I wasn't getting this). The battery icon said I had 4hrs remaining. Why did the time get cut in half when I only had the computer on for a few mins?

I just had a similar experience, but in reverse. I had been using my Macbook for about an hour and a half, and it went down to 20% (and it said that I needed to replace it soon). I quit my browser, and the battery immediately jumped up to 55%, and no replacement message.
From what I gather, it has something to do with recalibrating batteries, but in your case, your battery is pretty new, so that doesn't really make sense.

  • Battery capacity rising on MBPr 13"

I've noticed something very strange on my 3-month old MBPr 13" (late 2012 model).
In order to monitor my battery, I'm using the coconutBattery program. A week or two earlier, the maximum capacity was something along the lines of 98.* - 99.* %. Now, it shows that the "design capacity" is over 100%!
    Here's the screenshot:
When I first bought the computer, the battery reported 101%. Then, it went down to 98.* % and now it's rising up again. What does this mean? Do I have a malfunctioning battery? Is it dangerous?
As a sidenote, one day my Macbook became really cold and I saw some very minor condensation on it when I came back home. Obviously, I didn't turn my computer on in order to prevent damage to its inner components and left it turned off overnight. Could these temperature changes have caused this sudden change of capacity? Or are such fluctuations normal?

My battery capacity keeps rising, it now shows 6714 mAh. Is it really normal?

  • My battery capacity decreases per charge!!!

Hi guys I need help, I am very frustrated about this matter , This is my first macbook pro retine late 2013 the latest one out yet 4gb ram baseline model with the dubal core i5. I started playing LOL or League of Legends an online game a few weeks back.
When I did start I was completely hooked and played multiple hours even with the battery charger plugged in. The battery lost its total capacity from 6300 its about 6200 then it fell 6150 ok then I statred carying ok I LOVE MY MAC AND ITS BATTERY.
So i went like ok i will play max 40 mins per day, fine huh 1 time per charge cycle make sure the charge cycle is 20 hrs long I have been trying to do this more or less BUT EVEYTIME I PLAY THE GAME EVEN IF THE CHARGE drop is only 30% my total battery capacity drops.
I am checking this through MULTIPLE apps and every time i play the drop is bloody 0.5 percent and i  CANT TAKE IT and when i dont play on a chrge cycle there is NO DROP IN THE OVERALL capacity.
Note i take soo much care when i pay i charge it to 100 and keep it ice cold when  i play and its not plugged in. Any advice are the apps wrong is my capacity decresing are macs not meant for gaming or if i conture down this path will i have to eventully replace my battery just any adivce or thoughts on this matter will be VERY APPRECIATED!!!

When Taxing the system, Running it Hard as most all games do, it will draw power from both the AC charger and the battery at the same time.
The AC charger Apple supplies is not large enough to do both Power the system and charge the battery, or even keep the same charge on the battery, when the system is working hard.
As to the overall capacity of the battery that will go down with the increase of charge cycles.
What you are seeing is completely normal for all Mac notebook computers.

  • IPad Mini: battery capacity inconsistent

I notice that even if only down to 90% battery capacity, if I leave my iPad Mini (64g Verizon)  plugged into my computer overnight, it will only charge up to about 98% or 99%. Also, the iPad itself my display 98% but when synced with iTunes, iTunes may show it at 99%. I've numerous iPads over the past couple of years and this is the first time I've seen this inconsistent behavior.  I'm running 6.0.2 and I've done a complete device reset several times.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance!

By the way, the mini is only a week old and has been exhibiting this behavior since day 1.

  • Battery Capacity Consistently Lowering

Hi all, I've been trying to calibrate my battery by running a "fully charged" battery down to sleep, the reconnecting and recharging top capacity (as instructed by the apple website for re-calibrating).
However, according to X Battery, the capacity keeps going down. It was 3.978Ah a couple tries ago, went down to 3.701, and is now down to 3.560Ah. Anyone know what might be going on here? The high, 4.809Ah, occurred around 30 days ago.
I bought the Powerbook in February, could the battery be going bad already?
    Thanks!
    gene

A loss of capacity is a natural process for your battery to go through and the recent recalibration is made the system give you the real state of your battery. Failing to recalibrate the battery often reports very old capcity levels. Having said that the decline of your battery has been rather steep.
There are a couple of reasons for this…
    1) You do in fact have a bad battery although I doubt Apple will replace it at this stage. No harm in trying though.
    2) The constant recalibrating is accelerating the decay. While recalibration is a good thing is is not recommended that you do this more than once per month as constant depleting of the battery will erode its capcity at a much higher rate.
What you might want to note also is that the capacity reported at the completion of recalibration is affected by how fast you do the recalibration. I can guarantee you that you will get a lower capacity if you ran you PowerBook at 100% and full screen brightness (as fast as you can deplete the battery) for the whole time than if you deplete the battery as slow as you possibly could. The slower you can deplete the battery the better the result.

  • 10 Week Old MacBook & Current Battery Capacity already at 94%

Hello everyone, I recently bought a new macbook (11/09) and mainly use it thru its power adapter, although I do use the battery occasionally. Yesterday I decided to perform a battery calibration and it went as follows: The battery was fully charged when I unplugged the computer from it's power supply (the original battery capacity also showed 100% via Coconut). I took the battery all the way down to about 1% then re-charged it completely only to return and see that the Current Battery Capacity is 94%. Is there something going on with my battery or is it normal to lose 6% on a calibration? As I said, I have been typically using it with the power cord connected vs. just the battery. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should take it off the charger every so often, so the battery can drain and recharge. That will help some.
I can't see losing 6% of the battery as new. However, I also don't know how long the MacBook sat there prior to your purchasing it, etc. So while it seems odd, it also isn't outside the realms of possibility.

  • Battery capacity very low, despite careful use and maintenence

    Hello,
The current battery capacity of my MacBook Pro seems to be diminishing rather swiftly. I bought my Mac around 4 months ago, and have been using it for less than 3 months. I try to run Battery Calibration often (sometimes many times in a row, just because the situation allows for it), and I have never started charging it until it has went into standby due to low power. I tend to use it when running on battery, though I do occasionally keep the power-cord plugged in when fully charged.
The problem is, my overall battery life is down to 93% of the original, only with 63 loadcycles. That's not the worst part - it has recently been going down even quicker then before when 98% or so worried me.
I have kept a log of the life of my battery using CoconutBattery, it is as follows (in order from earliest to most recent):
    98 % (5440 mAh) 2007-09-06
    99 % (5464 mAh) 2007-09-09

Why are there so many jumps in percent, both up and down? How can I improve on my battery capacity? Can I anyhow make it increase back to the full 100%?
Is it better to keep it plugged-in or use the battery? Is the OK to charge it often?
Thank you for your time. I hope you can help!
    Rudi

It doesn't say that on the apple site!
You're right, it doesn't. It in fact actually implies the opposite…
    "Standard Maintenance
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month."
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Thing is, this text is aimed at those that rarely use their batteries as opposed to that those that do given that with regular battery use you're already doing the right thing.
Additionally, by regularly using your battery the function a calibration is actually relegated to a way of accurate reporting. Over time the cells degrade and the battery's circuitry as well as your MBP's SMC gets out of sync with this which results in incorrect battery run time figures. In the worst case this irregularity can result in your MBP shutting off without warning as it thinks it has more power than it really does. Calibration just lines this all back up again.
This does not mean you shouldn't calibrate but to do it only every now and then. I have an iCal to-do item to do it after 6 weeks from the last one although it can actually mean I don't do it for 8-10 weeks.
maybe change the battery - if so, will I still be able to purchase a new battery for my current SR model? Or should I buy one and keep it in stock now?
Assuming Apple changes the MBP battery on it's next revision you'll still be able to purchase new batteries for your MBP. While they don't make then indefinitely they won't leave us high and dry without a source of new batteries even after a line is not longer current.
Buying new batery is not recommended until you actually need it as Li based batteries degrade from the time they're made so the newer the stock the better.
