Battery charges... dies overnight?

My battery dies on me at the gym everyday! I charge it at home and by the next day the battery indicator is already red. What's up? I do not get the 12 hours of runtime. Shuffle is about a month old and the second one I've had due to the last one being a dud.

Several possibilities:
A. When you think you're charging, you're really not. This is a distinct possibility on some Dell models, as discussed at length in these and other forums.
B. Your workouts at the gym are infusing it with a conductive saline solution and it's shorting internally.
C. You're fantastically lucky/unlucky and have gotten two dud Shuffles in a row.
If B, get a sports band.
If C, you're actually in luck as Apple will keep issuing them to you as long as you keep bringing them in. If the next one also dies then you might start to suspect something else is going on (A would be a candidate).
If A is suspected, you might see better results with a new USB2 board or with a powered USB hub.

  • Battery often dies overnight after latest system update

Since I'm logged in anyway, I figured I'd ask this question:
Before the updates, I could charge up my phone, only turn it on when I needed to make a call or check something on the web, or get Market updates of apps I'd installed.
The battery used to last several days -- sometimes 4 or 5.
Now, however, I often can't even turn the phone on after a day or two.  I don't leave the phone powered on except when I need to use it, but there have been a lot of mornings that when I try to turn it on, the battery is dead.  I've tried two different batteries and I'm having the same problem with both.
Are there there things that run now, even when the phone is turned off???
I'm so frustrated, I could just spit!
    Connie in MI

I was experiencing the same issue.  I would charge the battery through the phone and use it during the day.  I'd check my battery level and it might read 50-60% at night. I'd turn off the phone before sleeping and then try to power it up the next morning. Nothing.  Battery was dead.  Can't say if the update to 2.3.6 is the problem.  However.I now charge the battery using a direct wall charger with the battery removed from the phone.  I use a backup battery in the meantime.  The wall charger appears to be a slow/trickle type charger that effectively charges the battery to a full charge, whereas charging the battery while in the phone doesn't seem to be as effective.  I can now go 3 sometimes 4 days with average use (for me) without having to recharge.

Ref: iphone 3G. I was visiting the US last week.  My iphone battery completely drained overnight. I re-charged it but ever since it has either come up with a message saying it's registering or saying I need to register it.  I'm concerned that if I re-register it on itunes I'll lose all my data.  I originally registered it a couple of years or so back, when it was new.  Any advice much appreciated.

Thank you for quick reply.  The data is still there - every so often when I switch it on, it comes up with the main icon screen, rather than the emegency calls only screen (which it does most of the time), and I can get to my contacts, photos, and so on, but it won't connect to any mobile/cell network provider, including my network here in the UK - O2.

Take it to an Apple Genius Bar to be checked out. It will either be the battery or the Logic board (not sure the charging circuit is a separate part. If it is then it mya be just that part).
If logic board just use it plugged in as for the cost of changing out the logic board you can buy a new system.

  • First battery charge

Plugged my Ipod shuffle (512mb) into my USB to charge for the 1st time and it blinks for about 10 seconds....it stops blinking or charging after I start using the computer...any ideas what i am doing wrong?

It doesn't have to be fully charged the first time; this is a myth promulgated by the uneducated. To calibrate your battery meter (make it more closely reflect the actual state of charge), charge it up by connecting it to your peecee for 3-4 hours, then start it playing and put the hold switch on. Then leave it alone until the battery finally dies.

  • IPhone 5s first battery charge

I have just gotten a brand new iPhone 5s and just ran out of battery: how long should I keep it plugged-in for the first battery charge?
    iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

Do whatever you like. Leave it until it's fully charged if you don't need to walk away from the charger with it, or leave it on charge for as long or as little as you like. The best way to look after the battery is to stop yourself inventing rules. Lithium batteries do better when they are exercised. The only thing which you are better avoiding is to do what most people think is good:  run it down until it dies, then charge it to 100%, then run it down until it dies...   This is not good for lithium batteries.
Charge it whenever a charger is to hand, regardless of the current state of charge, and don't worry about it.

  • Y50 battery charging problems

    hello,
received my new y50 a few days ago and began seting it up. the first few hours it was working fine. battery charged up to the full 100%, i then disconected the power cord to let the battery drain down to about 20%. i then plugged it back in and shut the computer down left it charging overnight. this is when the problems started.
waking up the next day i turn it back on to see that the battery is only at 21%. no mater how long i left it charging it did not change from 21%. So i decide to unplug it again to let it fully discharge. while unplugged it ran for another ~hour all the time staying at 21% until i finally shut off out of nowhere.
plugged in the cord and turned it back on, battery shows 0% plugged in, charging. but it never gains any % charge just stuck there. i do some reading online and decide to do the generic power down, unplug power cord and remove battery, hold power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect everything and power up. When it boots up the battery indicator now shows 2% and over the course of the next 10-12 hours it increased by mabe 30% more. the indicator NEVER changes its percent the only way to see the change in the charge is to shutdown/restart.
today is the third day and after many hours of use i got stuck at around 76% (only reaching this number by restarting every few hours to get a new updated battery charge%)  since it stayed stuck at 76% for a while i went for the more hardcore fix ive seen online:
power down> unplug power cord>remove battery>plugin power cord and startup on power cord only>uninstalled the microsoft acpi-compliant control method battery driver>shut down>re-installed battery>plugged in cord and restarted. the driver then automatically re-installed itself and brings me to where i am now.
now a few hours since doing that im up to 83% charge, but same problem remains the only way to update the charge % is by restarting/shutdown and occasionally i can remove the power cord and plug it back in while computer is on and it will update.
Any advice or suggestions on what to do, the 2 main problems i see are:
    1. battery charge % doesnt update dynamically, requires power down of some form to update it
    2. over 24 hours of being 'plugged in,chargin' just to charge ~80%

i have found the culprit to the problem, but it is one that doesnt make much sense to me.
if i try to install the intel video drivers from the y50-70 drivers page in lenovo support, or if i try to install the intel video driver from windows update, i lose the functionality of the battery indicator. it does show when its connected to ac or runnig on battery power, but it wont update the % load nor time remaining. only way to charge to full is when off.
i did ANOTHER fresh install and am currently running with all drivers installed except for any version of intel video driver and the battery indicator and charging times when powered on are functioning.
any chance to get new intel video drivers for win 8.1 for hte y50-70?

  • Need help with iphone battery charging please

    hey all,
i have a problem with charging iphone battery,
i´ve had the phone for 8months now with no problems at all,
yesterday i used it as a modem for connecting to the internet and it worked just fine but the battery died so quick and now it wont charge at all
i used both charge connector and USB drive in the computer - nothing works, i already tried resseting it several times - didnt work either, i also tried plugging in a different cable - thta didnt help either so its basically turned into a brick, i noticed tho when i try to restart it there´s a couple wierd lines on my display but then it doesnt turn on or anything, it goes back to a black screen with battery picture and one red line indicating i need to charge it...
i tried to charge it overnight but the red line on the battery pic doesnt move or anything, there´s no sign of it charging at all and it doesnt even want to sync with the computer, i dont know what else to try

The iPhone includes a one year warranty.
If you are in a country where Apple provides direct support and has an Apple store, you can contact Apple or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.
If you live an a country where Apple doesn't provide direct support - support for the iPhone is handled by the official carrier for the iPhone, contact your carrier.

  • Battery charge dropping even when plugged in on Satellite series

I've got a satellite laptop and even though it recognises the power adaptor when plugged in, and the icon in the task bar states 'charging', the percentage of the battery charge appears to be dropping.
This is only whilst the laptop is on, as it does seem to charge the battery when switched off.
I didn't think it used any battery power whilst plugged in, so I'm confused as to not only why the battery doesn't seem to be charging, but also why the battery charge appears to be dropping when the laptop shouldn't be using it anyway.
    Any help appreciated!

    Hi there,
i have seen this problem on my own laptops in the past. even if the laptop is charging, the battery does seem to be dropping in charge.
This indicates that the life of the battery is approaching its end, as there are a limited number of charge cycles for a battery before it eventually dies.
Also when you have the computer turned off charge is still being lost at a considerable rate, as the battery is well, 'dying'.
You cannot do anything about this except to buy a new replacement battery for your laptop from an authorised Toshiba repair centre. this should answer your question.

  • Battery Wear-Level overnight feels too High!

    Hi,
Usually i rarely use battery (always put the battery out after charging it) except when i need to take my 4-months-old B480 laptop outside (which is rarely happened)
Yesterday i leave my battery with ac adapter plugged-in while downloading a large file from internet, i set start charging threshold at 75% and stop at 95% (as many people said it's better not to fully charge the battery), and on the next day i see my battery wear-level became 13% O.o while cycle count is only 5
I think it's too high for a one-night charging, my old laptop (non-Lenovo) didn't gets this high even when i leave it with ac adapter for days.
Is this wear-level normal for a one-night charging? (at-least for lenovo laptop that is)
Does warranty covers an abnormal battery wear-level?
PS: one of the reason i choose lenovo laptop is because it has customizable-battery charging threshold feature which many people said can be used to prolonged battery lifespan(minimizing wear-level by not fully-charging it and not discharging it too low) even when used with ac adapter, while not many other brands have this kind of feature.

    hi AdamN,
A usual sign of an imminent battery failure is when it wears out the charge in an abnormal rate (battery goes down to less than 20% overnight after a full charge when unit is off or in sleep state). Sometimes heat can also be a factor to shorten the battery life as discussed in this article.
To further test the health of the battery, You can try Passmark's BatteryMon. If the battery is failing, you may contact Lenovo for a battery replacement. Support phone list here.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPod mini serial number and battery charging

This is a weird question that I hope someone can help me with. I purchased a refurbished mini (silver) on eBay for my daughter, because I love my mini, but I couldn't by a new one. I'm having battery charging issues (it won't hold a charge even after being on the charger (USB to Mac iBook) overnight. I wanted to see if there was still warranty available on it, but when I typed the serial number on the back of the iPod into the "check warranty" box on the Apple support home page it said it wasn't a correct serial number.
The back of the iPod (from top to bottom) has the apple logo, an HP logo (I wonder if it was originally packaged with an HP computer?), a weird holographic sticker of some kind, the size (4 MB), then the serial number. The serial number does look significantly different than the one on my blue mini.
Could it be that apple handed the warranty support on this iPod to HP?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iPod mini (blue)

    Kyle,
Thanks for your help. I will check the Hp website for warranty information for her iPod.
I keep my iBook set to never go to sleep when it's on the power adapter (I regularly charge my iPod overnight on it, and always use the power adapter when charging).
I reset her iPod and it seems to have solved the charging problem. It may have been an indicator problem — I saw some posts about that. I am having my daughter listen to her iPod all day today and see how long the battery lasts.
    Your post was very helpful!

  • Samsung Gusto 2 Battery Charge Alert

How do I turn off the battery charge alert sound on the Samsung Gusto 2?  Like most folks, I charge the phone overnight and when it is fully charged, the alert sound wakes me.  I have to have the phone near me with sounds on so turning off all sounds is not an option for me nor should it have to be.  I found directions for the original Gusto but the Gusto 2 doesn't seem to have any way to turn it off.  That's insane - am I guaranteed no complete night's sleep as long as I own this phone?

  • Is it ok to charge iPhone overnight?

Hi, I dont have time to charge my iphone during the day so i charge it overnight ready for the next day. Is this ok? Will it damage/ effect my battery life?
    Cheers

YES! I've had my phone since January and I used to charge it overnight, just cause it was handy. Two weeks ago I was charging it and it showed me false battery percentage, like it would have been on the charger for hours and say 13%, and wouldn't change all day. Then it kept dying and restarting, keep in mind nothing else was wrong with it. It then died and would not turn on, or even charge, if I did out it on the charger the apple logo would flash and nothing else would happen. I took it into apple and they said it was due to the over charging had damaged the battery and you should not charge it for more than 2-3 hours, one new iPhone later and everything's fine. Even contact Apple, it does damage it.

  • HT1476 Battery Charge Fluctuating

I noticed last night that my battery was at 1% even though my phone was on charge.
I attached it to my pc and after about half an hour the phone had picked up charge again and was at 87%.
It was fully charged when I left home this morning and then at work I've noticed it was on 57% so I've put it on charge.  Checked it about half hour later and it was still on 57%.
I've done the whole turn off and on again and now it's gone from 57% to 97% in seconds and just now now gone to 100%.
Is it just the icon, or am I on borrowed time with the battery charging?

    Hey there LizzyBee,
It sounds like the battery indicator is inconsistently reporting the battery charged percentage. In researching troubleshooting for you I found this Featured Discussion that may help your situation out as well:
    My IPad doesn't charge 100%
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4047393
This solved my question by Philly_Phan  on Jun 21, 2012 4:43 PM
It's probably the battery indicator, not the battery itself.  Run it down until it shuts down automatically.  Ignore any low battery alerts that appear.  Then, charge it overnight with the 10W charger.  That should clear things for you.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
