Battery problems and AppleCare

Here's the simple version of my story...
While my MB Pro was still under AppleCare warranty, it started having issues with power/battery. The first time it happened, my battery died (battery health went down to less than 20%) and it could not keep a charge for long. So I took it into to Apple, they diagnosed it as a battery problem, and sent me a new battery.
It wasn't long after however that the new battery they sent me experienced the exact same health-draining effect. So again, I took it back in to Apple. They again said I must have gotten unlucky with the replacement battery, so they gave me a new battery again.
As I anticipated, the same thing happened to my 2nd replacement battery. At this point I could tell that it obviously wasn't a battery problem, so I again took it back in to Apple. (At this point I had only a few months left under AppleCare.) As I explained to Apple my situation and as they read up on my case's notes, the worker again persisted to just give me another replacement battery. I argued and told him that I was pretty certain that it wasn't a battery issue but it was something else. He seemed to agree with me, but then convinced me to try again with one final battery, and then if this one died that THEN they would look into other possible causes.
This 3rd replacement battery lasted me a little bit longer than the first two, but then as I anticipated it also died. However, by the time it finally died, my AppleCare had already expired.
As I am planning to take my MB Pro in again to get it serviced, I plan on arguing to them that despite my AppleCare having already expired, I feel that they should still treat this case as though it were still under AppleCare because the original problem started while the product was still under AppleCare warranty.
Do you anticipate Apple giving me any problems over this? Thanks.

If the 3rd battery was obtained within the last 90 days they will probably honor Apple Care. They certainly will honor any part replaced, so the least that will happen if you're within 90 days is they'll replace the battery once again.
Make sure you articulate your history on this and ask to speak to a manager if it isn't handled to your satisfaction initially.
My experience is within reason they try to keep customers satisfied. You're in a much better position if the last action they did is less than 90 days ago.

  • Iphone 5c has battery problems and shuts down even after charging, just upgraded to 8.2, no help, what is my next option?

the iphone 5c still has problems with battery life and shuts down after complete charge.  this happened after 8.1 update, I tried every way to shut things down, still no luck.  what can I do next?

I did a soft reset, and I went to the discussion and turned every down or off.  This is definitely a hardware problem.

  • The battery problem (and an explanation)

This is for all the people who posted with battery problems (battery always shows full charge / charging, battery only charges with wall charger, battery drains overnight on full charge even though it is off, ipod cannot be turned off).
If you are under warranty, take it to the apple store. If you are like me and are out of warranty, you have a couple options.
    1. If the only problem you experience is with a weak charge (battery drains overnight on full charge) then it is probably a battery problem. Follow the usual steps (5 R's) first, then search online for replacement batteries. The process is EASY and CHEAP.
    2. If you experience any of the other problems I listed (the ones I have are: Ipod won't turn off - which causes the battery to drain quickly, always shows charged / charging, only charges through wall charger) then you probably have a logic board problem. This is the answer people aren't giving you. Unfortunately, the logic board replacement is much more expensive (however, with the right tools which are cheap, it is not that difficult).
What are your options? You can sell your ipod for parts and buy a new one. Your other option is to try and pick up a broken ipod and hope it has a working logic board. Note that the 'sad face' can actually be a problem with the logic board and not the hd! If the hd is making clicking noises / clearly sounds bad, then it is probably an hd problem. Keep this in mind.
Currently I plug my ipod into the wall charger each day then only use it for short trips when I need it. I'm hoping the next gen ipods come out soon =]. However, I am keeping my eyes open for ipods that may have hd or other problems that I can pick up on the cheap. I have not turned to ebay since it is hard to figure out exactly what the problem is.

My brother never syncs either and that's not good. Should sync often if not every day. So, given that, as far as your apps go, did you remove any apps over the last year and you just forgot? If so, when you synced with your computer it simply deleted the apps from your phone. Not being snide just a thought.

  • HT4061 cant turn on, battery problems and board

Hi there, I bought my phone from Oman four month ago, at first, recently I noticed the battery runs down really fast,  and when I use the camera the phone switch off, and at last thephone went down and did not open again. however, the phone still under warrenty but I cant take it back because I bought it from Oman and now I live in Malaysia, Apple machies stores in malaysia did not accept my phone for repairing becuase its not under warrenty, I gave my phone to thirdparty technical to fix it, said, I need to replace all of the board and phone screen as well, honestly I am afraid to do so, please advise me what should I do ? thanks .

battery percentage?? i don't think you can turn that on.... but there is an app called battery magic that tells you what percentage it is at and how long you can play games, play games in 3-D, be on internet/safari.. ect..... hope that helps... and if it doesnt, well, i have no idea how to help... sorry..

  • More battery problems and feedbsck..

...and we csnnot have enough of these threads!
my battery was on 30ish percent last night. My full charge capacity is 1350 (used to be 1500 before latest update). I thought I'd be clever and turn off Bluetooth, WiFi and mobile data to save power. And for good measure, put the phone into flight mode.
Oops. Battery completely dead when I woke up. Something is clearly not working properly as we all know.
Nokia? Wherefore art thou? This phone is not fit for purpose at the moment, unless I can work out how to turn my a$$e into a mobile power source!

I can confirm exactly the same experience.
I had about 40% battery before I went to bed. I put it on flight mode and in the morning phone was dead. I could not even turn it on. No charge at all.
I checked diagnostics tool and yesterday it showed maximum capacity 1450mAh, this morning it showed only 1333mAh and now it shows 1300mAh.
Before update 8107 battery capacity was 1520mAh
I received my phone from Nokia care center because of audio issue, but all they did was just to flash firmware 8107, audio is still **bleep**.

  • Battery Cycles and discharge when plugged in

    Hi all,
Couple of questions from a newbie unibody MBP owner.
    1) My battery is draining slightly even when I have it plugged in. Over 3 days using it plugged in and shutting down in between, my charge goes from 99% down to 95 and triggers a recharge. Is this normal?
    2) My battery seems to add cycles every time I charge it - even if I've only used it on battery for an hour of plain browsing. Aren't cycles meant to reflect accumulated discharge rather than number of charging events?
Battery has been calibrated twice since I received it 2 weeks ago.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your reply Mr Engineer.
So re the charge cycle, it shouldn't be adding whole cycles to the count each time I only used a small a amount of charge, then recharge. IE - 1 cycle should = 10 x (using 10% of the battery, then recharging).
Since mine is adding cycles each time I recharge, is this likely to be a software or a hardware(battery) problem, and how do I get it fixed - just call AppleCare?
    Many thanks

  • Battery Failure and Kernel Panics. Help!

    Hi all,
Thanks in advance for your help.
About a week ago, after I had left my computer alone for two days, it randomly shut off when the meter up top said it had 40 minutes. Then, when it was closed in sleep mode and I opened it, it told me it had to be restarted--which I, through reading the forum, found out is a kernel panic. Since then it has not given me any more kernel panics, however, it consistently turns off at about the forty minute mark. This is what I have done so far:
attempted to recalibrate the battery, which hasn't worked/I don't know if it really can because it doesn't get below 20% without shutting off. (btw, when I turn it back on, with the plug in, the battery is not dead, it's at around 20%).
have done the first three steps in the x guide to kernel panics.
Does this sound like a battery problem, and if so how do I solve that?
or does it sound like a kernel panic, hardware problem?
Thank you so much for any help, I desperately want to fix my computer.
    Besos.
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi alby23,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
If your computer is two years old, it's in need of a new battery. If you open System Profiler (Apple menu>About This Mac>More Info) the battery's capacity and charge cycles will be listed. If the Capacity is ~2000 you have less than 50% of a new battery's which is 4400mAh.
You may be able to solve part of the problem by resetting the PMU. That may get the time/percentage back to a more accurate number. If that doesn't help, get a new battery.

  • Another one of those battery problems...so scared

    Hey all,
I know that many people are posting battery problems and I think I have a similar one...I just don't know if apple will listen to me. My 15" mbp shuts down at around 45% charge for no reason. I applied the update that apple provided but to no avail.
    Unfortunately, here are my stats:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 3824
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 3824
    Amperage (mA): 239
    Voltage (mV): 12604
    Cycle Count: 529
It seems i have decent capacity but the cycle count indicates that the battery is old (about 13 months). So what do you guys think? Do I have a chance of getting a free replacement with the protection plan? If there is a possibility, what tactic should I use-you know- call apple, mac genius, what should I tell them. The problem has been bothering me for a while and it seems to be getting worse.
If I probably won't get the replacement, can someone recommed some good alternatives you found to the default batteries, preferably those with a greater capacity/battery life. Keep in mind, I'm a college student so any money I can save would mean a good month's worth of food that isn't crackers and ramen.
    thanks,
any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I really doubt Apple will give you a free replacement battery. Apple specifies that a battery should maintain 80% of it's original full charge capacity for 300 cycles. As you point out, you have 529 cycles on your battery - it's had a good life! But Apple will tell you (correctly) that batteries do wear out, and that's what is happening to yours.
So, you either need to live with the poor run time that comes with an elderly battery, or purchase a new one. It's just one of the extra costs of ownership, like buying gas for your car.
If you check on Google, there may be slightly less expensive 3rd party batteries out there. If you go that route, given the problems many people have had with these batteries (which Apple has acknowledged), be sure you trust the vendors warranty. Else, you may be better off just buying direct from Apple.
Wish I had better news, but I hope this at least sets your mind at ease a bit...(except for the $ part, of course...).

  • Problems, problems and problems..

I have enough problems with my iphone, have restored it as 7 times and the last one restores it like newly, it works one well day and then you see other one it does not work ..

    Sorry for my bad english

    Wow, bad translation!
It sounds like a battery problem, and probably a hardware problem.

  • Power and battery problems with MacBook Pro intel core duo

Hi there, I've been having this problem for about a week now with my macbook pro where it shuts down a second after it's unplugged, even though the battery is full. I tested the power cord with another that works, and the same thing still happens. I've zapped the p-ram, and reset the MPU where you take out the battery and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and all that. I think it might be the logic board, or something within that? Any suggestions before I send it in to Apple for investigations?

I started having the same problem several days ago. Unplug the magsafe connector, and the MBP powers suddenly powers off, even though the battery shows a full charge on both the menu bar and the battery leds.
I decided to try a new battery after reading a number of posts here about the same problem.
Back to normal with the new battery. So now I'll go back to Apple to get the non-functioning battery replaced under AppleCare. (I wanted a second battery anyways)
    Hope this helps.

  • HP G30 Power and Battery Problems

Hello, I have had an HP G30 for nearly three years. A few months ago I noticed that I sometimes had to reinsert and adjust the adapter plug back into the outlet on the computer until the little light by the computer outlet (the place where the adapter plugs into the computer)would illuminate. Eventually, the charger stopped charging it altogether and no light illuminated by the computer's adapter outlet. I discovered that a Dell charger I had did charge my G30, so I figured that it was just the adapter. Well, recently, the same thing  started to happen with the Dell apapter - I had to reinsert and adjust until the light illuminated on the G30 and now it has stopped charging it altogether. Also, this Dell adapter still charges the Dell computer I have.
Anyone have any ideas what could be going on with my computer? My mother died of cancer nearly two years ago and I have photos of her on that computer an nowhere else. I just want an idea of where to start with troubleshooting this issue. Thanks.

  • Heating problem and battery backup

Recently I bought a macbook pro (7 days). I am facing heating problem and its battery backup is also not good, 3-4 hrs, but company claims 7 hrs. What should I do?

For more on laptop temperature, look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1778
    Take note of this part:
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • I bougt a new  Macbook pro in 02/26/2013, in  11/25/ 2013, my trackpad become bulging, they exchange the trackpad, but not the bulging battery.  I went there yesterday, with different problem, and they said one screw  came off from the  truckpad again!

I bought a new  Macbook pro in 02/26/2013 from Apple Canadian Ices -003.  Than I could not use it, because  my cursor uncontrollably  was jumping around the screen, I was  resumed my trackpad become bulging, Than on11/25/ 2013 they changed my trackpad for free, because was manufactoring defect,  but not the bulging battery.  They said that is do not needed.  Since that my cursor is quiet often quivering, I think my Macbook has serious  manufacturing defect. But they said no, during a year period I went to  the genius bar at least 15 times, with this and similar problems.   I went there yesterday, with different problems, and they said one of the screws  came off from my   truck pad, therefore they need to fix it and change it.  I said: -  What,  how, what  is the real problem?  A screw does not comes off just like that?  They will change my trackpad again, but not the battery. They said  has to rebuild the operation system, I'm  saving all of my data right now! I would like to exchange the battery too, or maybe get a new Macbook. My Macbook is 2010 China model. How long I would have this trackpad  problem? What are you suggesting?

If it's a 2010 as you say towards the end of your post, it's out of warranty. The battery isn't covered in that case. Why don't you just buy a new battery if that's your concern? If it's a 2013 as you say up at the top, it shouldn't have a bulging battery. How do you know it does? If it really does, ask for the store manager and explain the problem.

  • My first problem is that I have no apps on my iPod desktop. The second is that my battery died, and despite being able to charge it, it is unable to restart back up.

My first problem is that I have no apps on my iPod desktop. After using my computer to install something onto my iPod 5, it somehow disconnected. When i restarted the iPod, some apps (Safari, FaceTime, Game Center, App Store, iTunes Store, Camera, and some others disappeared. Apps like Flashlight and Jetpack Joyride which I had previousyl downloaded from the App Store were still there. I wanted to get the aforementioned apps back, so i decided to back-up my iPod to iTunes. The downloaded apps weren't able to be backed up ("authentication problems") but some apps like Tips, Video, iBooks, Reminders, Stocks, Settings, Voice Memos, were backed up. I then proceeded to factory reset the iPod, deleting everything and starting it as a new iPod. Once I finished this, I looked my desktop to see everything was gone, absolutely everything. I double-pressed the home button, showing Settings was open, but that's it. I opened settings and factory reset it again, this time choosing to restore from a backup. After doing this, I found the iPod looked the same as the last time i reset it - blank. If I scroll down the middle of the screen to bring up a search bar, I can find only the apps I backed up (Tips, Video, iBooks, Reminders, etc.) That is the first MAJOR problem. I was getting really frustrated, so I opened up iBooks and discovered I can download a could free books from the store, which was essentially the only thing I can use the iPod for. There were no videos in the Video app, and pressing the "Go to Store" button did absolutely nothing. No lag, it just ignored my touch. Once i found a few books, I decided to start reading. Eventually, i brought this iPod somewhere to read it, and didn't bring the charger with me. The battery died, and when i got home, tried charging it.
Which brings me to the second problem. A minute or so after I plugged in the charger into the dead iPod, the Apple logo came on. But the iPod never started up. The logo stayed there, getting dimmer after a minute, but no vanishing even after fully charging or pulling out the charging cord. It didn't leave even after hours, but by then the battery died again. If i press and hold the power button and the home button at the same time, the Apple logo disappears. But I can't get into recovery mode utilizing the volume buttons. If i hold the power button when the screen is blank, the Apple logo comes back. But the iPod cannot start up.
After everything was wiped, i was pretty angry. But I still had books to read, even if i couldn't do much else. Then the battery died, and it really wrecked me up. I feel so mad right now, although this actually happened about 4 days ago. The iPod being wiped happened about 3 days after the Christmas holidays began. This iPod also was not brand new, I bought it off a friend who had it for over a year, although it was in perfect condition (Obviously out of warranty.) I desperately need a solution to this HUGE problem. Due to personal reasons, I can't go to a Genius Bar or go to an Apple retailer in person, but communicating by E-mail is an option, as is instant messaging.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
The missing apps could have been done by setting the Restrictions that can hid those apps. If the backup was made with those retrictions set the the Restrictions are also restored.
Thus, if you get it to work restore to factory settings/new iPod, not from backup
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
