BB 8830 vs. BB 8820

I currently have (and love!) my BB 8830. Due to poor network coverage I am looking to change service providers. The competition offers the 8820 model.
Is there any real difference between them other than perhaps the "language" it speaks (TDMA,CDMA,GSM, etc.)?

The two only real differences are that the 8820 will have WiFi, and the GPS will not be disabled (IF it was on your previous carrier).

  • Differences 8830 and 8820

What are the differences between the 8820 and 8830?
I thought I had purchased the 8830 only to find out that I had the 8820, which is fine.
I did read that there is an update to the 8820? Is that software available somewhere and what does it update?
What I didn't know was they the 8820 has a known issue where some of the devices just lock up for now reason. Since the is a known issue, I am surprised that a recall was not sent out. Now I have spent several hours on the phone, trying to get a replacement device and trying to find out how to get everything from my current device on to my replacement device of the same 8820 model. I have take such care to have my current faulty 8820 setup the way that I want it, I know have to start all over -- maybe.
This is a great board and am so glad that I was directed to it. Thanks to all the contributors and great responders!

I'm having the same problem too. I found an online tutorial...

  • Firmware Update for my blackberry 8830 world edition with Bell Canada

Hi does anyone know if there is firmware update for the Blackberry 8830 world edition with the carrier being Bell Canada?  I am running version 4.2 and I know there is 4.5 but I am not sure if this applies the my phone with Bell Canada. When I boot up my desktop manager and checks for updates and says that there is no update.  I don't want to update if it is not necessary and not be able to run my blackberry.  If I am able to update where would I go to get the 4.5 update?

You have to repair Desk Manager or unintall and reintall DM, but this time uncheck "Auto update" and anything that refer to "update" the reason why I mention that is because everythime you run DM, it goes online and check for newer version and put this file "vendor.xml" in the Blackberry Common Folder, and with that file in place, it will block the program from installing the newer version from a difference cell company..
From what I see 4.2 is the only version that is up to date for a 8830...but if you have a 8820, you can update to 4.5.

  • 8830 connectivity in Japan with CDMA

    Hello,
I want to purchase the 8830 with CDMA and wonder if this smartphone does also work in Japan, calls and data,
furthermore I need to buy the phone in Canada without a contract as the 8830 is not available in Germany!
Is there any difference between the sofware from the 8820 which is available in Germany tothe 8830?
Would be nice to here some experiences.

you can use this site to compare models:  http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/compare/
As to the coverage in Japan, that is more a direct factor of the carrier you choose and what roaming agreements they have.  The two main suppliers of the 8830 in Canada are Telus and Bell.  I checked the Telus coverage maps (http://www.telusmobility.com/ab/coverage/global_roaming_maps.shtml#j) , they showed Japan on the map as CDMA, but did not actually list it in their table of supported countries.  Bell Canada showed it as GSM (http://www.bell.ca/support/PrsCSrvWls_Cvg_Travel.page?tab=2# ) and only listed support for voice calls.
Make sure you confirm with the carrier you plan to use that they will support the 8830 and that they have roaming agreements with Japanese telecoms.

  • Blackberry 8830 World Editiion Software

I have a Blackberry 8830 World Editiion Smart Phone. I need to reinstall the software and would like to get the latest version. When I get to "Select a Device" I see the 8820 but not 8830. I selected the 8820 software and installed it. Now when I use the device I can highlight all of the applications but not select any. The telephone still works but I can' access anything else.
Is this a coincidence or did I mess up by using the 8820 software?  If so, how do I get the 8830 software?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Screen Damage Due to "Blackberry" Badge on Closure Flap of 8820 Swivel Holster

I recently received a Blackberry 8820 which came with the lambskin swivel holster in the box. The closure flap of this holster has a metal badge on it with the "Blackberry" name cut into it. The surface of this badge, especially where the name is cut, is very rough.
The other day, while placing the phone back in the holster, the closure flap got inadvertently tucked inside the case and the surface of the screen scraped across the metal badge. I could hear and feel this as it happened and stopped inserting the phone immediately, but now there is a huge gouge in the screen.  At first I was sick about it; now I am angry because the damage was caused by the case that was intended to protect it.
I contacted my carrier (T-Mobile) who gave me the "too bad; so sad... there's nothing we can do" treatment
I feel this was the result of a poor design and would, at a minimum, like to contact RIM but cannot seem to find a direct number.
    1) Has anyone else experienced this?
    2) Is there any recourse?
    3) Does anyone know how I can contact RIM directly to suggest they move this badge or change the design to prevent this from happening again.
    Thanks in Advance

Most of my users have their phones with the screen facing out.
This way if the tab gets caught, it would only scratch the back. Plus then they can see the notification light.
Suppose you could try contacting RIM... 519/888-7465.
Is your phone under still under contact? I've had Verizon replace 8830's that were busted for $50.00.
The other option is you can buy the front piece plastic piece that covers the screen, called a Front LCD Screen and replace it. You can pick them up for about $6.49 on Ebay. Then go to Youtube to find a video on how to install it.

  • 8830 World Unlocking Issue

I have a BB 8830 World Edition with Bell Canada that I purchased used for an extended trip to Europe. The SIM card provider for Europe tells me I must unlock the phone through the provider. Bell Canada tell me I do not have to unlock the phone. I went to an independent store and he tried to unlock the phone and said it is hard locked and cannot be unlocked.
I'm puzzled on what to do. I don't want to arrive in Europe and not have the SIM card work. Does anyone have any experience with taking a BB 8830 to Europe without unlocking and having a foreign Sim card work.

To see if the phone needs to be unlocked just insert a non original sim card in it.

  • DOES THE BB 8820 HAS FIPS (140-2) validation ?

    Hello.
Doing a Comparison in the BB official website in the  COMPARE BLACKBERRY SMARTPHONES link
I had the 8800 8820 and 8830 smartphones comparison and i realized something:
In the DEVICE SECURITY Tab it said that only the 8830 has FIPS VALIDATION.
(and Im almost sure that all 8800 series has the FIPS validation.)
CAN ANYONE CONFIRM ME THIS PLEASE?
DOES THE BB 8820 HAS FIPS (140-2) validation ?
    another question.
in the comparison it said that the 8800 and 8830 have the Transmissive TFT LCD
    and the 8820 didnt....
DOES ANYONE KNOWS WHAT KIND OF DISPLAY DOES THE BB 8820 HAS??
    thanks a million!!!

  • Adding BBAlpha Sans to 8820?

I recently got the 8820 and tried the fonts already installed on it.  For me, none are as readable as the BBAlpha Sans in my Pearl.
Is there any way to acquire this font and install it in the 8820?
    Current OS is 4.2.2.169
    I am a user, not a developer.
    Thanks.
    DFung

Jeepers! I hope you find it. Since you mentioned it, I just thought I'd try it - and yes, it's VERY readable. I have an 8830 from Verizon w/ v4.5.0.138. Is that OS available to your 8820? That may allow you to have BBAlpha Sans. Good luck

  • 8830 Lock-ups

My 8830 has been locking-up at least once a day, everyday this week.  The indicator light turns solid red the screen goes black.  You can't do anything with it.  I have to hard shut it down by holding the power button down for awhile.  Usually twice before it will finally shutdown.  Then have to power it up again.
It started to do this a little over a month ago, but then I did an software update which I thought fixed it.  But now it's doing it again.
Anyone else have this problem or a possible solution to fix it?

I've had an 8703e since January. It began rebooting on my on its own. It could be in the holster, sitting on the table, or in my hand being used. It did not matter. the only trends I noticed were: It seemed to do it in the evening and around 9pm CST, this is when I was texting. That stopped being a trend after a few weeks and it was doing it everyday sometimes more than once.
I turned the phone into Verizon in February and a brand new one was sent to me. It started rebooting after several weeks and it has become more frequent lately (April). It is rare that I am using the BB so I dont beileve it has anything to do with an application. I suspect some reset signal is being sent or a system check is executed causing it to go into a reboot.
The odd thing I have noticed is that there are blogs concerning several models that are all reporting this automatic reboot. That leads me to suspect it is something with the BB server or a hacker related issue?????

  • 8830..Moving e-mail messages from Inbox to other folder

On my 8830...When I move e-mail messages from my Inbox to a different folder (under Inbox), they disappear totally from my laptop e-mail rather than mirroring what I did on my BlackBerry.  On the flip side, if I move messages from my Inbox to another folder on my laptop, it does mirror on my BlackBerry.  My e-mail is Outlook 2003, running on my company's Microsoft Exchange Server.  Please help.

Since you have folders under your Inbox, I can only assume you're on a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) setup receiving your Corporate email.  If that's not the case, I can't figure out how you got folders under your Inbox, and have NO IDEA how you're getting the results you're getting as BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) email accounts can't have folders!
You most likely don't have reconciliation enabled for the folders you're moving your email to.
Go into Messages, hit the [Menu] button and select Options --> Email Settings.  Hit the [Menu] button and select Folder Redirection.
You should see your Mailbox at the top with a + to the left of it.  Highlight that line, hit [Menu] --> Expand to display the main folders under your Mailbox.  Your Inbox should appear with a Box next to it either checked or filled in.
Highlight Inbox, and again hit [Menu] --> Expand to display the folders under your Inbox.  All the folders under your Inbox, and the boxes are probably unchecked or not "filled in".  Scroll to the folders you want reconciled with your BlackBerry and hit [Space] to check or fill the box next to it.  Use [Menu] --> Expand if there's a + to the left of the box to expand subfolders.
Once all the folders you want reconciled are checked or filled, hit [Esc] and save.
Now your email won't dissappear when you move it!  You should also notice in the Messages list that email in folders other than your Inbox have a folder icon rather than an Envelope icon.
And before you ask...  The BlackBerry does NOT SYNCHRONIZE, it Reconciles.  Email is pushed to the device ONCE, and only changes to the status of messages are transmitted after that.  Moves will only be reflected after you've turned Reconciliation on for a given folder.  BTW - emails you moved that disappeared should have been in your Deleted Items folder.
Reconciliation rather than Synchronization saves enormously on data transmission ($) as well as Battery life.  Believe me - we have both BlackBerries (Big Wigs only) and Windows Mobile (the rest of the 25,000 peons) devices at my company, and the most common complaint about the Windows devices is battery life, and HUGE costs when the device is overseas!

  • Several questions on BB 8820 ¿? :-S

Good morning! Firstly apologies as I write from a translator. Secondly, I would like, if possible, that I resolved some issues on my blackberry 8820. 1 - I'm thinking of expanding the memory with a microSD card greater than 2GB (which is what I have) that capacity until 8820 supports? Supports 8gb cards or higher? 2 - Secondly, I am a bit lost as to the subject of BES, BIS, and others. I live in Spain, and I suppose that even another country, the operation will be similar, no? I would have to do? talk to my carrier for a flat fee cotratar data and despeus to receive mail on my 8820 and so on? as serious? Just that. Thank you very much in advance

Good morning.  Well whatever translator you're using is doing a great job! (although using your [Enter] key occasionally would make it a bit easier to read).  No problem understanding your questions.  Here's some answers:
    1. The maximum size of MicroSD card is dependant on which version OS your device is running.  You can find it by going to Options --> About.  It's listed as v4.x.x.x.  Ignore the (Platform) number.  Here's a chart of supported SD card sizes by OS.
    2.  BIS = BlackBerry Internet Service.  This comes standard with all BlackBerry Data Plans, and supports pushing email down to your device from up to 10 email addresses.  This typically connects to a POP or IMAP email service, but can also connect to some Web services like Outlook Web Access.  There is currently no wireless data sync of Address Book, Calendar for this type of service.
BES = BlackBerry Enterprise Service and is typically run by a company, although "hosted BES" services are also available.  This service delivers email from an Enterprise mail system (Exchange, Notes, GroupWise) AND supports wireless synchronization of Address Book, Calendar, Tasks, and Notes.  This service can be used in conjunction with BIS service as long as the host (company) doesn't prohibit it.  The hosting company has complete control over what the BlackBerry can and can not do.
    3. For you to be able to use any "data" services (use the device's Browser or applications like Instant Messaging) you must have a BlackBerry Data Plan.  If you're connecting through a BES, you must get an BlackBerry Enterprise Data Plan which is typically $10-$20 US per month more expensive than a regular (personal) BlackBerry Data Plan.
    Hope that helps!

  • I have 8820 with ATT and would like 4.6 OS

    Hello,
I have the 8820 and have ATT as a provider... I recently found out that I can can put in a microSD card.. so naturally I would like to get the biggest...
I read that if you use the 4.6x.x.x. OS you can get upto 32 GB... sounds nice... so I go to AT&T and they only have 4.5.0.110...
I read a little deeper into the forums and see that if yyou use another service providers OS you can get the 4.6.x.x.
    So my questions arer:
    1-will the 4.6 work with my 8820
    2-Where can I get the 4.6
3-If I read correctly all I need to do is delete the vendor.xml as stated below:
Wireless providers disfavour that, but you can install device os for your device model but from another wireless provider.
Download device OS installation pack for your device model from another wireless provider's site.
Install it to your desktop computer.
    Delete Vendor.xml from installed files.
Connect your device to the desktop computer via USB and launch BB Desktop Software and after that run Application loader.
    Two important points:
    1. Download device software for your particular device model.
    2. Make backup of all your sensitive data before device OS updating.
4-How do I back up the sensitive data???
    Thanks for help this newb

Oh, and once you have Snow Leopard you will probably find you have the 10.6.3 version.
This will need updating via the Combo Updater, below, and then software updating a few times also to sort out security and iTunes.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1

  • I need help with BlackBerry 8820's bluetooth issue

    Hi!
Please accept my appology of my poor English.
My 8820 has a bluetooth issue with Bluedio E9+ headset. It must be note that the headset works well with another phone (not BlackBerry). My BlackBerry can't actively connects to bluetooth headset by the method 'Menu' key > 'Connect' option, but still able to receives connection request from the headset and pairs with the headset when i choose Yes. At this point I can use bluetooth function for data transfering, Voice Dialing and music playback (i.e. mp3 files). But each time I try a mp4 file with default video player in Media folder, its audio will never work with the bluetooth function, and the phone's speakers is automatically enabled. I try the menu when the video was playing, but there are only Activate Handset and Active Speakerphone options. Then I was converted the file with BlackBerry Video Converter Pro; I remove and reinsert the battery; I wipe the phone and install new ROM,... But none of them work.
    Please help!

    Regards, Mathan MP

    Hi Mathan,
You can configure the proxy server by following these steps
Make sure that MDS is stopped.
    1. Go to installation folder of your MDS. Like for example in my case
        "C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 4.0.2\MDS\config"
    2. Open the file rimpublic.property with a notepad/textpad.
    3. Under section "# [HTTP HANDLER]", Change the following 3 properties
        a. "application.handler.http.proxyEnabled = true" from false
        b. "application.handler.http.proxyHost= proxyname"
        c. "application.handler.http.proxyPort=portnumber"
After this you can restart the MDS and try to access any web link. Hope this helps.
    Best Regards,
    Siva.
