BB10 runs native Android by partitioning?

Since there is not a BB10 support site yet. I will throw the question out here as PlayBook is QNX based.
After reading an old thread about running IOS on the Playbook, so why not run Android on PlayBook under BB10? Why do it in a round about way using Dalvik VM and getting partial result?
There will be four cores in the Snapdragon S4. Can one or two core(s) be partitioned out to dedicate to run native Android?
Android is an open source and IOS is not. RIM can pick up the Android for free and immediate.
I understand RIM doesn't want to be another Android.  Why not use BB10 for business application and Android for consumer application.  No need to reinvent the consumer ecosystem. It is out there for the taking...free!
Would not BB10 /Android be have the cake and eat it too?
Apple's real competitor is Android. RIM joining Android would be a great way to fight Apple,  wouldn't it?
I like to hear what all the smart people here think.
Thanks.

Because that's the way Android works.  There is nothing "round about" about it. All Android devices run a Dalvik VM too. Most Android apps are Java apps, and thus more or less require a VM. If you were to somehow precompile Dalvik bytecode, it would most likely be incompatible.

    Thanks, Flex harUI, for the direction in regards to isolating build changes. That aside (still working on it), can you offer any direction in regards to my original question on SDK and AIR compatibility? I'm specifically looking for a version compatibility mapping or anything that definitively states, "Flex SDK x.y.z works with the following versions of AIR". This information is crucial for us in order to more specifically plan our own roadmap built upon these two frameworks as we consider both existing installations of our software and future distributions.

  • Run existing native Android App over the SUP

    Hello everyone,
    we have developed an Android app, which connects to the ERP system via  a "simple" Rest webservice. Now we have a customer who wants to run the same app over the SUP. We have installed SUP and want to know which is the easiest way to run our Android app over the SUP. What would be the first steps to connect our app to the SUP. What changes have to be done in the existing code?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Themicaa

    Hi Themicaa,
    Are you using SAP NetWeaver Gateway 2.0 to expose your ERP contents as REST services?. Are you following oData formats?
    Connectivity to SUP would be simple.
    Install SUP2.1 Server. Once you have the above setup ready, you need to do the below configurations.
    1. Configure releay server in SCC.(Only if device connectivity from outside firewall.)
    2. Create security configuration in SCC.
    3. Create applicationID and application connection in SCC providing Gateway Service Doc/Proxy URL.
    Refer thread http://forums.sdn.sap.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132783&messageID=11081762#11081762 for details.
    Install SUP2.1 SDK installer.
    With SDK installer you will get libraries for Connectivity, Parser, Cach etc.
    Add libraries from  <UnwiredPlatformSDK_InstallDir>\MobileSDK\OData\Android\libraries\. to your application project.
    Use the below piece of code to register the application wit SUP server.
              try {
                   /* STEP1:Initialize the App */
                   LiteUserManager.initInstance(getApplicationContext(), "applicationID");
                   /* STEP2:Provide SUP connection Settings and Register the User */
                   LiteUserManager usrMngr = LiteUserManager.getInstance();
                   // usrMngr.setConnectionProfile(Server_Host, Port, FormID);
                   if (!usrMngr.isRegistered()) {
                        usrMngr.setConnectionProfile("10.66.57.144", 5005, "0");
                        // usrMngr.registerUser(userName, actCode);
                        usrMngr.registerUser("APPUSER", "123");
              } catch (MessagingClientException e) {

  • How to convert keystore (from native android project) to .p12 to use with AIR project?

    Due to the advancements with adobe AIR, I'm really excited to be finishing up a HUGE update of an old project that was originally made with native android.
    But, i've hit a brick wall with 2 issues, and it would be terrible if all the work i've done in AIR was for nothing...
    First, how do I convert the keystore I previously used (from native android project) to .p12 to use with AIR project? (on a mac)
    Second, how do I remove the "air." that gets automatically appended onto the front my android package name? I plan to use a captive runtime, so it's not really needed at all, and I can't upload it like this as an update because it will think it's a different app.
    Please help so I can continue using air for all my projects from now on!

    Thanks for the reply!
    So I'm going through this guide..
    http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/opt-out-air-application-analytics.html
    I followed all the steps, made all the adjustments to the androidmanifest.xml like it asks.
    But when i get to the stap that says
    "Run the following command to create the resource file for the updated AndroidManifest.xml:"
    I run this..
        "/Users/brybam/Documents/eclipse/android-sdk-mac_x86/platform-tools/aapt" package -f -M AndroidManifest.xml -F resources.arsc -I "/Users/brybam/Documents/eclipse/android-sdk-mac_x86/platforms/android-8/android.jar" -S ./res
    But I keep getting the same error
        ./res/layout/expandable_chooser_row.xml:1: error: Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token)
        ./res/layout/expandable_multiple_chooser_row.xml:1: error: Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token)
        ./res/layout/main.xml:1: error: Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token)
        ./res/layout/multiple_file_selection_panel.xml:1: error: Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token)
        ./res/layout/ssl_certificate_warning.xml:1: error: Error parsing XML: not well-formed (invalid token)
    The guide doesn't say anything about these xml files, and im not sure what to do with these ore how to handle them.
    If i go into the res/layout folder, and just delete these (i know theyre for my layout and i need them, but im just saying i deleted them for the sake of a test)
    I was able to get through the rest of the steps in the guide fine, make an apk, and put it on my phone...only to find out the app will crash the moment you try to run it.
    So my question is, does anyone with any experience re-packaging an android application know how I might get around this or take care of the errors with the xml files in the layout folder?
    Thanks!!
    EDIT to note something i've tried:
    So, earlier in the guide they have me use thing thing called the "AXMLPrinter2.jar" to make the AndroidManifest.xml readable so i can edit it.
    I run something like this:
        java -jar "/Users/brybam/Desktop/repackage/AXMLPrinter2.jar" AndroidManifest.xml > AndroidManifest.xml.bk
    This makes a new file "AndroidManifest.xml.bk" and i can edit that.
    So, I was thinking with all of these layout xml files, maybe I could run this "AXMLPrinter2.jar" on them and then edit them. Because right now if you open them they're not human readable, and its hard for me to work on them if they're not...
    But when i do the same command I did on the AndroidManifest.xml i just get blank files...
    I tried
        java -jar "/Users/brybam/Desktop/repackage/AXMLPrinter2.jar" main.xml > main.xml.bk
    Just get a blank file.
    So, i think the issue might be with these just not being re-formatted to human readable.

  • Native Android Extension - Service Not Found

    Greetings,
    I have created an AIR native extension which I am using in an AIR for Android app.  My native extension needs to use an Android Service from a 3rd party library.  However, seemingly no matter what I do to hook up this Android Service in the native code, the app reports "Unable to start....service not found" at runtime.
    Now I have used this service in normal, native Android apps and it works fine - I have tried duplicating the same startup process from my previous apps, that process still results in a "service not found" error in this AIR for Android app.
    Does anyone know whats going on here, or had similar issues?
    My only thought at this point is that the intense mangling that happens when AIR compiles an APK might be screwing up the path to the Service, therefore the class loader on the Android device is unable to find the service at runtime.  However, I do not know how to prove this hypothesis.
    I have gone as far as to write my own Service class which wraps around the 3rd party service, so that the service I'm requesting is in the same java package as all the other native extension code I'm writing, but that option didn't work either.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Matt
    PS - In case you're wondering, I did make sure to declare the <service> tag in my extension's manifest file.

    Hey Chris!
    I figured out *JUST NOW* what the issue is (and this is certainly NOT documented in any PDF, or whitepaper on Native Extensions).
    The problem lies with both the Signing Certificate and the package name for your AIR Application.
    Rules for Adobe AIR Native Extensions
    Rule 1 (Documented)
    The Code Signing Certificate package must match the application id in your app.xml
    so if the certificate package is `com.my.company`, then the air app id must be `<id>com.my.company</id>`
    Rule 2. (Partially Documented)
    When packaging a native extension for android using ADT, a prefix is added to your package name so it looks like `air.com.my.company`.
    (Not Documented)
    When the Android ActivityManager tries to run your service it looks for it in `air.com.my.company`. Thus, the Service class must live in the same package (including the 'air' prefix) within your java code. My TestService class now is defined as `air.com.my.company.TestService`
    And with the following manifest, it runs just fine!
    <application>
              <activity android:name=".TestActivity">
                        <intent-filter>
                                 <action android:name="TestActivity"/>
                                  <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT"/>
                        </intent-filter>
              </activity>
              <service android:enabled="true" android:exported="true" android:name=".TestService">
                   <intent-filter>
                                           <action android:name="test.default.service"/>
                   </intent-filter>
              </service>
    </application>
    Start the service using the following code
    startService(new Intent("test.default.service"));
    Thanks again!

  • Native android apps - with DPS single edition?

    Thank you!

  • Installing XP via 98SE to run natively on Intel chip

    I'm inching toward getting a Power Mac Dual Core G5 where I could set up a dual-boot system with Windows with BootCamp. As far as I've been able to discern from these forums, only Windows XP can run natively on the new Intel chips. Fine, I have XP on my PC, but I don't have a full version for installing, only a version for updating earlier versions of Windows. Do you reckon it would be possible to install Windows 98SE on the G5 without trying to run it, and then to update it with my update version? Somehow it would seem a bit ironic to switch to Mac and then have to run out and buy Windows XP.

    My apologies for not being entirely clear... there is a single processor Dual Core G5. (One processor, two cores). I re-read my first post and realize I poorly worded my reply to you.
    The Core Duo is an Intel processor. Not yet availible for the PowerMac.
    The Dual Core G5 is a PowerPC processor. Again, since it's a PowerPC processor, Boot Camp & Parallels are a no-go for the PowerMac right now.
    Apple has publically indicated that all Macs will be available with Intel processors by the end of the year. The PowerMacs will have Intel processors in due time. Apple just decided to redesign the iMac first... whatever their reason might have been.

  • Video not working on the first run of Android app

    I couldn't find any results regarding this problem. Maybe I'm just using wrong keywords as it is difficult to explain.
    Has anyone else encountered that video is not working on the first run of Android app? By first run I mean directly after installing. I'm using NetConnection, NetStream, Video objects and GPU renderMode. By working I mean it's not showing and can't hear the audio. I haven't yet debugged deeper so I don't know if the problem is actually related to the code loading the video.
    I've encountered the following issues, which may or may not be related, regarding the the first run and Video object:
    - The first run takes about 20 seconds to start. After that, the start is pretty much instant. If you clear app's cache, it again takes the 20 seconds to launch. The video works after clearing app's cache.
    - When creating the first Video object, the app flashes screen to black for a few frames. This is why I create a dummy Video object in the beginning.
    I use AIR 13, going to upgrade to 14, but I'm quite sure this problem and the issues have been for a while.

    I should add that we're using flv, not mp4. And they're progressively downloaded, not local.

  • Running Leopard on one partition and Tiger on another partition?

    I have recently purchased a family pack of Leopard, and I am reading up on a lot of the posts, here, before I venture the installation on two machines. I intend to install Leopard one machine at a time and give a few weeks between installations.
    One machine is a 20" 2.0 Ghz Intel - IMAC Aluminum (August 2007), and the other is a G4 Powerbook 17" 1.67ghz 250GB HD. I will probably install on the IMAC first.
    My question concerns the G4 Powerbook 17." I have just purchased a 250gb internal hard drive; however, it has not arrived yet. From time to time, I want to be able to run a few programs in classic....., and to have that available to me in the rare event that I want to look at files formatted for classic programs. Call me old fashion or unable to let go of the past... .in any event, I have some files that may be difficult to convert or some software that I do not want to purchase in OS X because I use those programs so rarely.
    Initially, I considered just having an external fire wire drive with Tiger installed on it in which I could boot classic up on the rare occasion.
    My new idea has been to partition the internal drive to have 10 gb or so available for Tiger. Has anyone successfully run Leopard on one partition and Tiger on the other partition or do they potentially cause problems for one another? Any suggestions, recommendations or concerns are welcomed.

    Works like a champ. I run Panther, Tiger, Leopard, and OS 9 on the G4 w/o problems.
    Get a bootable, external HD, partition it into enough volumes to accommodate each machine, and make bootable backups/clones of each machine before upgrading/updating and ensure that each boots that machine and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • Native Android and iOS Look & Feel with Flex

    Hi. I have recently beena asked to research the use of Flex for development for mobile applications in Android and iOS. What I want to accomplish is the feeling of a native application, both look and feel. Android and iOS are very different in terms of styling components.
    Can this be even be done in Flex?
    Are my goals too high too achieve with Flex?
    Screen shots from Flex, Android, and iOS are below.

    This is definitely possible, even easy if you jsut have the time to put into it.
    All you need is an Android Theme - create custom styles for the buttons ect.
    There is a discussion about it here:
    https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLEX-33732
    And it is an open issue so at some point this will probably get incorporated into the SDK.

  • How to switch from legacy to native Android app with minimal interruption

    It's gotten to the point where I'm recommending that my client switch their DPS app for Android from legacy to native. Can anyone offer any insight into the process of changing that over for an existing app? Most of the Adobe support documents are written for starting a new app in native format. I need to give the client an idea of how the transition will affect existing subscribers on the Android platform (i.e. will they need to download a new app, or will it work as an update) and what we can do to retain readers if they do need to download an entirely new app.
    Complicating the situation is that the client likely will want to keep the legacy app as long as we can to continue offering it on Amazon, because Kindle devices account for 60 percent of our non-iOS downloads.
    Thank you!

    To replace the existing legacy viewer, simply use the same Bundle ID used in the legacy app when you build the native Android viewer, and then submit the app as a new version in the Google Play Developer Portal. To locate the Bundle ID for the legacy viewer, open the desktop version of DPS App Builder and look at the list of apps. It might include a .air prefix, depending on when the app was built. If it does, use the .air prefix when you specify the Bundle ID for the native viewer, even though it's not an AIR app. The Bundle ID just needs to be the same. If you want two separate apps--which I don't recommend--use a different Bundle ID and submit it in the Developer Portal as a new app.
    The Amazon app is a different app that's unrelated to the Google Play app. You can continue to leave the app in the Amazon Appstore.

  • I can't create a native android app with 2560x1600 rendition. I only see the 2048x1536 and 1024x768 option in the web native Android application ?

    Hello All,
    i ve created a native android app. I need to publish on a 2560x1600 android tab. the problem is that in my library i have my 2048x1536 and 1024x768 ipad version.
    I know that when i create my native Android app i should be able to chose my rendition in only 2560x1600 but in the Library Tab of de web android native app builder I only see the 2048x1536 and 1024x768 option.
    Please do you have an idea ?
    TX

    The dropdown only lists the folio sizes you have published in your app's publication account. Make sure you've actually published a 2560x1600 folio and then you'll be able to select it from the dropdown.

  • Renditions or Single Folio for Native Android?

    I am not sure what the best strategy is for native Android folios. Should I build a single folio at 1280x800 or renditions at 1280x800, 1920x1200, and 2560x1600 as described in Digital Publishing Suite Help | Setting up renditions for native Android viewers?
    Do I need three sizes of graphics (as describe in the Android developers docs) if I use the renditions?
    Thanks,
    Joe

    It doesn't matter what size graphics you use. We will resample them to 108ppi for the folio size you pick. 1280x800 is a fine size to use for Android.
