Bc4j; set LastModByUsername

Question

Let's try this again...
A common need is to save the "lastModifiedByUsername". In my case, this is an applications username ( shared with Oracle ERP ) and not the database connected username.
Anytime a row is updated I need to put my "Application.UserName" into a certain row attribute, automatically.
The idea of doing this via a rowchangelistener/dataitemchanged is rather abhorrent to me, since the bloody thing pounds on the attribute for EVERY change, wasting cycles and slowing response time.
Is there some method I can safely alter at the BC4J level to programmatically do this?
I see a promising

in my EntityObjectImpl.java. Is this the right place? Where is the documentation on how to use this? Is it not stomped on if the entity object is regenerated ( for example, to add or remove new attributes? )
Is there a better, more reliable approach?

Well, that approach turned out to be pretty stupid. dataItemChange fires (of course) on any kind of change.. including rollback/refresh for every attribute! So can't put the update of a LastModByUser there.
Let's try something else.. is there a way to catch the Transaction commit from the navigation bar... and then use scrollable rowset access to step through all the records... but is there also then an indicator of each row being 'dirty' or 'clean'?
Ah heck... rumors are that parts of Oracle ERP are being rewritten using this tool... how the heck are they doing this task?
