BCM4328 - broadcom-wl vs ndiswrapper

I'm using Arch linux on my Macbook, and I have almost everything set up the way I want. But there is one thing that's bugging me a little bit. I know that it has Broadcom BCM4328, from lspci:
02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)
But there are two ways of getting it to work:
- using broadcom-wl (available from AUR, but I got it straight from http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php and compiled myself)
- using ndiswrapper and using driver from (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD … y_No-Fluff)
I've tested both ways, and they both work, but with a couple of caveats:
- with broadcom-wl, the ESSID and Link quality information can only be seen as root (as described here
- I've noticed that broadcom-wl doesn't like waking up after suspend (using wicd, but networkmanager works fine. I thought it was dhcpcd problem, but it works fine with ndiswrapper)
- using ndiswrapper feels hotter than broadcom-wl
I guess my main question is which one should I be using? Could anyone recreate the above observations (the first one is verified, I think, but not sure about the other two).

Daniel_F wrote:Have you tried using dhclient instead of dhcpcd ?
Tried that, without success. It fails at the same place where dhcpcd did.
BurntSushi wrote:Have you heard of cnetworkmanager? It's a command line interface to nm :-) (It's in community.)
I tried that as well :-P. I was looking for something that is curse based (like wicd-client), so that I can see the list and scroll through the selection. There is also nmcli which I find better than cnetworkmanager, but nm-applet is working for me
Also, the temperature has been very stable and at normal temperature since I moved to broadcom-wl, so I guess there's the conclusion

  • [HOWTO] Wireless card BCM4328 without ndiswrapper

    Hey,
    Not an issue at all this time. I want to make my little contribution about how to install the BCM4328 card without using ndiswrapper. Probably, the majority of you know that Broadcom released drivers for 32-bit and 64-bit for the following cards: BCM4311, BCM4312, BCM4321 and BCM4322. Check this out for more info: http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
    The thing is that about 3 weeks ago I re-installed everything and now I'm happily using Arch64 on my MacBook 3.1 Santa Rosa but unfortunately I had some issues with ndiswrapper and I couldn't configure the wireless card (BCM4328). So, I gave a chance and I tried the Broadcom drivers even if my card wasn't on the list. And my surprise was that works perfectly!!
    Some outputs:
    lspci
    02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)
    lsmod | grep wl
    wl 1079104 0
    ieee80211_crypt 7300 2 wl,ieee80211_crypt_tkip
    iwconfig
    eth1 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"Cadaques" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.457 GHz Access Point: 00:14:A5:CD:75:6F
    Bit Rate=54 Mb/s Tx-Power:32 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
    Power Managementmode:All packets received
    Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=-25 dBm Noise level=-91 dBm
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:1 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    There is also a package at http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19514 on AUR for Broadcom 802.11abg Networking Drivers it's called "broadcom-wl" and it really works very nice and smooth with the latest version of the kernel (2.6.27.5-1)
    You can easily install it by doing:
    yaourt -S broadcom-wl
    After installing the package just make sure that you unload (or blacklist) the following modules:
    rmmod ssb
    rmmod b43
    rmmod bcm43xx
    Load the good one:
    modprobe wl
    ifconfig eth1 up
    Now you should be able to see the interface and connect to your preferred network using for example wicd or any other tool.
    If you find this useful and you think should go to the wiki, let me know. I found the MacBook wiki a bit outdated but I wasn't sure at all so suggestions are welcome!

    Ok thanks I'll give it a go, I really am new to this networking stuff as I've only really used ubuntu before. In the setup for Arch I did have it include wireless-tools and the bcw43-fwcutter packages because it's that packages that got my wireless working in ubuntu. But my cards the same model as yours so I'll try it this way. Is there anything else I need to do to like my module or Wireless option in rc.conf or any of the network files, because I read that the drivers are modules and they sometimes need to be specified if not automatically detected.
    Ok I'm going to combie the beginers guide with your HOWTO. iwconfig returns:
    lo         no wireless extensions.
    eth0     no wireless extensions.
    This is odd because lspci | grep network returns
    0b:00.0 Network controller: Boradcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)
    and its logical name is eth1.

  • Cisco Aironet

    I got a Cisco Aironet card to replace the Broadcom that uses ndiswrapper.  Here is what happens
    modprobe airo
    modprobe airo_ca
    then run iwconfig
    eth1 (which is my wireless card) no wireless extensions
    A few places suggested that it is the driver.  Anyone have any other suggestions?   Does anyone use a Cisco Aironet card?  How did you get it installed?

    i have aironet 350
    modprobe
    yenta_socket , pcmcia_core , airo , & airo_cs
    in rc.conf
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    #eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo !eth0 eth1)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug pcmcia network netfs crond )
    but since the upgrades that came out the other day
    it doesnt work at boot up i have to unplug then plugin card
    run as root
    ifconfig -a
    dhcpcd eth1 or i could use
    dhcpcd wifi0
    from what ive read so far its a udev prob havent been able to figure it out yet
    so im plugging away at that

  • Broadcom BCM94311MCG wlan wireless range problems 'ndiswrapper'

    Hello masters of ArchLinux
    I have a little issue with my Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev 01) wireless adapter using ndiswrapper ,configured step by step following the
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless#BCM43XX wiki page
    At the beginning i was very confused ,becouse with my 3 year expirience with Linux I was unable to understood what is happening with my wireless ...
    Under ArchLinux using ndiswrapper my wireless adapter has only 3 meters of range with any type of access point ,even with ad-hoc...I tried with D-link AP, Linksys & etc...
    The first thing that was up to my head was the 'Transmit Power' on the adapter , 18 mw...But then I restart under WindowsXP also on the same notebook ...Dell inspiron 1501...the transmit power was also 18 mw ,but my wireless was working with very good range ,above 300 meters from the AP
    Any suggestions about this issue ?

    Try the kernel's b43 module.

  • Broadcom wireless chipset and no more ndiswrapper

    Hi everybody,
    After some problems I could made my wireless card work by using ndiswrapper (cf post 117105 )
    But recently ndiswrapper was removed from the repositories... I don't want to reopen this subject, enough have been told on it. However it seems that my card should be supported by the b43legacy driver but it doesn't work. I could install the ndiswrapper from AUR but i would prefer to use the kernel module.
    So here is the problem I have with b43legacy. I can see the different wireless networks but when connected it fails on authentication.

    I tried to extract the firmware manually, using b43-fwcutter, and to use the one in AUR but always got the same results.
    I didn't try yet without protection (now I am trying with WEP and WPA) because other people are using the network now and even if it is work without protection it will not be an acceptable solution.
    Can someone help me on this?
    Thanks

    Didn't find the solution so installed the ndiswrapper from AUR. Too bad as my card is said to be supported...

  • Broadcom BCM4328 connection problem

    Hey,
    For days I've been struggling to get my wireless up and running. And I'm pretty close I think, I believe I've set up everything correctly. My wireless card connects to my local home network (WPA secured) using netcfg and everything seems well. However it disconnects within the hour. Sometimes after 15 mins and sometimes after 30 mins or so, it's kind of driving me nuts. Is anybody else experiencing the same problems with this card? The only way to regain my connection is to manually reconnect with netcfg.
    I'm using the driver from AUR for this card and the installation procedure I got from the corresponding Wiki. But like I said everything works except for this stupid glitch. And it isn't only netcfg that gives this problem, I've had the same issue with Wicd and NetworkManager.
    I hope somebody can clarify this for me,
    Ivan.

    Is there really nobody who can help me? I noticed that when this happens, I'm not really "disconnected" from the network since running "iwconfig" shows I'm still connected:
    eth0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"bistarac" Nickname:""
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: 00:0C:F6:50:DB:CC

    Power Management:off
    Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=-52 dBm Noise level=-90 dBm
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:2 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    There is however 0 traffic, no webpage is loaded and the only thing I can do is disconnect and reconnect to get a connection for another short period of time until the problem happens again. Can this be some kind of WPA or netcfg issue? Or is this related to the broadcom-wl driver?
    Also here is my netcfg config file for this network in the hope that it may help:
    CONNECTION='wireless'
    INTERFACE='eth0'
    SECURITY='wpa-configsection'
    ESSID='bistarac'
    IP='dhcp'
    TIMEOUT=300
    CONFIGSECTION='
    ssid="bistarac"
    key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
    psk="..."
    proto=WPA'
    Thanks again !

  • Broadcom Air Force One, any Ndiswrapper instructions?

    Hi everyone!
    I've been hearing great things about Arch, and being a fairly new Ubuntu user, I naturally like things to be easy and mostly automated (although I'm willing to learn!), and I just happen to be one of those unlucky few who need to use Ndiswrapper to get their wireless card working. We have some pretty nice tutorials on how to do this on Ubuntu, such as: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD … y_No-Fluff and I'm wondering if there's a corresponding Arch step-by-step guide. I no longer have an XP install, so I can't rip drivers out of there.
    Thanks,
    Slip

    Most of the documentation is found on the wiki.
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/
    The wireless docos are here
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup
    in particular b43 and bcm43xx

  • [SOLVED] Ndiswrapper, NetworkManager 0.7 and 64-bit Arch Linux

    Hi there!
    I am having problems configuring my wireless card. I know I have to use Ndiswrapper, and this is what I have tried to do; however, it didn't go quite well.
    This is rather odd because it worked perfectly in the 32-bit version of Arch Linux, but now it doesn't work.
    So, here comes the code.
    valandil ~ $ lspci | grep Network
    0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)
    I really use ndiswrapper and have already installed what I think is the proper driver (it seems that the list the official ndiswrapper site had has somehow disappeared.
    sudo ndiswrapper -l
    Password:
    bcmwl5 : driver installed

    Here's iwconfig:

    Alleluia!!!
    I think I will write a new rule for myself to follow :
    Thou shalt never use ndiswrapper again.
    Thanks a lot, wonder, and thanks to you too, Xyne.
    FYI, I tried to use something else than ndiswrapper before, but it didn't yield satisfying results. Anyway, thanks.

  • [SOLVED] An another Broadcom thread

    Hey there,
    I could use a bit help over here. I'm trying to get my wireless working and so far it's going like hell.
    Here's some info:

    Welcome to the forums.  Could you replace those [ quote ] blocks with [ code ] blocks please.  Code blocks are presented in a monospace font with scroll bars which makes them much easier to read.  Also, while in these cases I can infer them, including the exact command you used for each bit of output would be important.  Specifically, we have to assume your invocation of wpa_supplicant was correct ... in normal use it will be passed many parameters and you have not shown which parameters you passed.
    While we could work on figuring out why dhcpcd is failing, I'd prefer to start from scratch and make sure wl is necessary.  Can you post the output of
    lspci -vnn | grep -i net
    EDIT: I believe most of the 4321 chipsets will now work with b43 with recent kernels.  But the command above will specify which chip you actually have - the broadcom wireless page on the wiki links to a b43 support chart which lists most 4321's as "partially supported" in kernel 2.6.39, but things have come a long way since then as were at linux 3.10.x now.  I have one of the 4321's that works perfectly with b43 (I think it's the 14e4:4329, but I'm not on that computer now).
    EDIT2: my most consistent typo fixed "not"->"now"

  • Linksys AE1200 wifi adapter with Broadcom BCM43235 driver not working

    I followed the instructions on the Broadcom wireless page from ArchWiki, and I tried every method, and none worked at all. The interface never showed up with "ifconfig -a", and I could not get ndiswrapper to work with the windows drivers either. Any suggestions for alternate ways?

    wolfo9999 wrote:but I know that the os detects it because it shows up in lsusb
    That doesn't say anything except that the device is powered on. It does not say anything about the OS. The OS should know something, the docs claim that the brcmfmac driver supports it, but you haven't provided any info for us to know what's going on. ewaller gave you the hint: dmesg. Also exact lsusb output would be nice, so we'll know the usb-id of the device.

  • Ndiswrapper/iwlist scan not showing ESSID

    I just installed Arch-64 on my HP dv6000 laptop. Working from the command line still to get wireless working, I compiled and installed ndiswrapper-1.43. It compiled and installed perfectly for my Broadcom 4311 wireless. I've used this same ndiswrapper for both Ubuntu Feisty-64 and Sabayon-64 with no issues.
    When I type 'iwlist scan', I get the long list of networks we can see from our house, but none of them display the essid (which they normally do from this laptop) and all say 'Mode: Unknown/bug'. When I load the ndiswrapper module, the essid is automatically set to the only unencrypted network available. I tried to connect to my home WPA network, but it wouldn't connect w/ wpa_supplicant (which also normally works fine).
    Any ideas what to check? I've looked through these forums and the ndiswrapper forums and didn't see anything similar.
    I'd really love to keep on going here...my first day w/ Arch!
    Thanks, Scott

    Hi, firecat53, and welcome aboard!
    In fact there already is a forum topic which covers at least one of your problems (the iwlist scan one), although they might be connected and we simply haven't tested WPA yet. Unfortunately we don't have found a satisfying solution to this problem yet.

  • Broadcom Wireless Card Setup Problems

    Hello there, I'm very new to Archlinux and to linux overall. Since I'm done with my classes for the summer, I had the crazy idea to setup a home web server with my old machine and at the same time use the wireless card as an acess point for my laptop. The problem is that I followed all the steps in the Archlinux wiki about the wireless setups for the B43 driver several times. However, my system seams to ignore all my efforts and keeps making fun of me. According to what I understood, it's not setting up the network interface. (Which is suposed to be done automaticly I think) So here's a bunch of troubleshooting commands results.
    iwconfig

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

  • Problem with broadcom driver (wl) - can't set essid

    After a long history of failure installing linux on Mac hardware, I thought I'd try once again try installing Arch a MacBook (4,1) containing the Broadcom BCM4328 wireless card.
    I followed the instructions on this wiki page (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312) and installed the broadcom driver from AUR (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=19514).
    A couple of strange behaviors resulted. The first is that after the module installation, the wireless interface was set to eth0 and the ethernet interface is set to eth1. Not sure if this is a problem, but it was new to me.
    That said, eth0 (wireless) was up and able to detect my wireless network with "iwlist eth0 scan".
    My attempt to set the essid, however, failed.
    I issued the following commands:
    ifconfig eth0 up
    iwconfig eth0 essid "homeplate"
    But when I typed:
    iwconfig eth0
    it still showed essid as empty ("").
    Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Has anyone encountered similar problems with the Broadcom driver?

    I got it to work, I used the package from AUR (I Have a broadcom 4322, totally wish it was something else =p)
    yaourt -S broadcom-wl
    Anyways, then I added the modules 80211_crypt_tkip and wl in rc.conf. At first I tried to use Wicd, but it wouldn't start at one point, and at another couldn't find any wireless hotspots. I decided to give network manager a try. So I downloaded and installed networkmanager, and network-manager-applet .
    pacman -S networkmanager network-manager-applet
    It was able to find the wireless connections at this point, and I was able to connect(WEP Hex key) definitly did not get full speed that I have gotten from other distros typically 700k+, it was bouncing around 100-200. Mind you this was after a long process of trying to load wl as a daemon (DOH!) and I was completely stumped as to why it wouldn't work. Anyways, hopes this help you in someway.
    Broadcom neeeeeeds to give us open source plssssssssssssss.
    Coleys!
    I have ARCH on this computer, but *for now* my laptop is using sabayon (Dual booting arch, It rocks...) Hopefully us broadcom 4322,4328 users get a solution! D=

  • No network and Broadcom wireless card

    I'm new to Solaris OS, and I installed Solaris 10 with no network since I'm using a broadcom wireless card. Before installing Solaris10 on this box I had Ubuntu running on it and was able to use the ndiswrapper for the broadcom card.
    But... I'm a bit lost now since I installed solaris 10 with no network at all. So my question is, how do I create a new network and get my broadcom card installed?

    Solaris is a great OS... welcome to the fold.
    First, Broadcom is not a good choice for any alternative OS including Solaris but OpenSolaris does have drivers despite Broadcom's lack of cooperation with other operating systems. I do suggest staying away from this vendor because of their "closed" nature of driver support.
    That being said, the HCL at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ can help. As well as Linux and others. While vendors like Broadcom are closed, others are not.
    My favorite has been Intel 82557, 82558, 82559-controllers, I bought a bunch of them dirt cheap years back knowing they were supported with Linux, BSD and Solaris. They work well in pairs too, use then for firewalls.
    The best thing we can do is only buy hardware that works with all OSes.

  • Problems with broadcom wlan adapter and wlan-button.

    I've got a laptop (HP Compaq 6715S), which has an integrated wlan adapter (broadcom 4311/4312?). A couple of weeks ago the adapter was working ok with ndiswrapper and bcmwl5.inf driver, but it stopped working recently probably after ndiswrapper and/or kernel upgrade. Loading the ndiswrapper module from rc.conf made the whole system kernel panic (IRQ problem?) until I added:
    acpi=noirq
    to the kernel boot parameters. Now this error doesn't occur every time I load ndiswrapper, but the problem still exists. BCM43xx driver doesn't work either. I'm using the 64-bit arch.

    The other problem that I have is the wlan-button: The wlan adapter isn't always turned on at boot and I have found no way to turn it on from linux. It can be turned on by booting to windows or resetting the bios to defaults, but it is not very nice. I've noticed that pressing the wlan button adds one usb device:
    Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:171d Hewlett-Packard
    Is there a way to fix these problems?

    When I used to use ndiswrapper, just downloading one of the generic INF files didn't do the trick for me. I had to go to my manufacturer's homepage and download it there extract the drivers from the exe and use them in order to get my card work reliably.
    Also, have you used a 64 bit driver? This guy reckons you need it:

    I guess I solved it. I have been using the 64-bit driver, but have tried the 32-bit driver from hp diver site too.  For some reason ndiswrapper seems to install a driver named "ndiswrapper" with this 32-bit driver, which is why it didn't work. So my solution was:
    1) Get the 32-bit driver from hp.com
    2) rmmod ndiswrapper
    3) remove all installed ndiswrapper drivers: ndiswrapper -r <drivername>
    4) installed the 32-bit driver: ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf
    5) ndiswrapper -l gave me:
    bcmwl5 : driver installed
    device (14E4:4312) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)
    ndiswrapper : invalid driver!
    6) Got rid of the weird ndiswrapper driver inside ndiswrapper: ndiswrapper -r ndiswrapper
    7) modprobe ndiswrapper
    Rebooted a couple of times and it seems to work ok.
    How about the wlan-button problem?
