Beans, Business Objects, & DTO's... What's the difference?

The subject really says it all. From what I can gather, the three have the same basic structure, but named differently depending on what context they are used? For instance, could the following class be any of the three:

I believe that a BusinessObject may contain both data and business logic. A Bean is a pretty generic description of a particular struture (getters, setters, etc...). The data transfer object (DTO) is just an object which encapsulates data that is passed between application layers (integration layer -> business layer -> presentation layer). I don't think that it has to be in a bean type structure.

it's generally accepted as better design to separate presentation from logic. meaning, the java code in the jsp should be used to support displaying data, as oppsoed to implementing the application - like database access, etc.
when the logic is separated from the presentation, it allows you to reuse logic components within several jsp pages.
if you decide to change the presentation layer in the future (to support wap, for example) you don't need to rewrite your entire application, since the "guts" of the application is outside of the jsps.
it is also a good idea to separate your business logic from your data layer. adding a "buffer zone" between these layers helps in the same manner as in separating presentation from logic. if you're using flat files for storage now, upgrading to a database wouldn't require rewriting all your business logic, just the methods which write out the data to a file, for example.
once you feel comfortable with separating the various layers, check out the struts framework at http://jakarta.apache.org/
to answer your second question, to get parameters passed in from HTML forms, use ServletRequet's getParameter() method.
in tomcat:

to answer your third question: when displaying the HTML from withing a jsp, print out the string to a javascript variable or a hidden form element:

for eg.

1.so c2 is not refering to any object, so where do we put the null?in the heap?

For local variables you can't have "Car c1;" the compiler will complain.That's not true. It will only complain if you try to use it without initializing it.
You can have (never used, so compiler doesn't care):
public void doSomething()
   Car c1;
   System.out.println("Hello");
}or you can have (definitely initialized, so doesn't have to be initialized where declared):
public void doSomething(boolean goldClubMember)
   Car c1;
   if (goldClubMember)
       c1 = new Car("Lexus");

Business system:
If you want to address a particular business system as the sender or receiver of messages, choose this service type.
A business system is an actual application system in a system landscape. A business system (service) comprises information about the inbound and outbound interfaces and the software component versions of the business system.
You usually use business system services when configuring internal company processes.
Business Service:
If you want to address an abstract business entity as the sender or receiver of messages, choose this service type.
Using a business service, you can define the technical or business subunits of the companies involved and then assign them the relevant interfaces.
You usually use business services when configuring cross-company processes. In this case, you only make your interfaces known to the business partners involved and either do not make any details about your own system landscape available, or only specific details.
For example, you can define RosettaNet Partner Interface Processes (PIPs) as business services.

What's the difference between Action Objects and ActionListeners

Hello,
in the Introduction to JSF two ways handling action are demonstrated. One way is "Combining Component Data and Action Object" the other way is "Handling Events."
What's the difference? When do I use this or that way?
The one thing I understand is when using "Combining Component Data and Action Objects" I use the default ActionListener and I may directly access the input values.

Hi Juergen,
The bottomline is 'not much', only in the details to these two approaches differ.
The ActionListener object will have events broadcast to it for a particular object by the event mechanism in JSF. You can add one to a specific component via the f:action_listener tag. This will have your listener getting events during specific points in the request processing lifecycle (you specify via your return value for getPhaseId).
The Action class that an actionRef reference refers to an Action that will be invoked during the invoke application phase. (see pg 71).
I would recommend using actionRefs and Action objects wherever possible and going to ActionListeners only when you need notifications during a specific phase of the request/response cycle.

PA is based on Infotypes 0000-0999. PD is based on Infotypes 1000-1999, chief being Objects Infotype 1000. Objects Infotype is the source of different Object Types such as Person, Position, Org Unit etc. You can check that through transaction OOOT.

What are the differences between inactive and active ABAP objects?

Can anybody tell me what are the differences between inactive and active ABAP objects?
In my opinion, an active object is compiled and system wide available, that means the system do not have to compile the program again before run or use the object. While An inactive object is not system wide available and every time you run an inactive object, firstly the abap runtime will have to generate a tempory runtime object and this inactive object can not seen by others.
Am I right? Can anybody kindly tell me other differences?

"If we just saved that one means it is stored in application server not in database": no - the inactive version is also stored in the database. You can log off and log on and it will still be there, in its inactive status.
"Only active objects can be executed.": no - inactive objects can be executed by you
When you create or modify a program, it is inactive until you activate it.
With a change, there are two versions of the program stored in the database - the active version (as it was before you made your change), and the inactive version. If you attempt to run the program, you'll run the inactive version - the one with your changes. Everyone else on the system will run the active version.
In this way, you can make changes without affecting anyone else.
Once you activate your program, then the inactive version becomes the active version.
With a create, there is no active version, until you hit the activate button. This means ONLY you can run the program.
An additional benefit of this model, is that if you make a change, save it, and then change your mind without activating, you can recover the active version into the editor, using version management.
A downside is that sometimes you have to activate your change before you can test it, if it interacts with other, active, programs.
