Before you Upgrade Read This...

This support article explains how to save your old version of Final Cut Pro as a hidden Zip file and how to hide/save your work in case you decide to switch back AFTER upgrading to FCP 10.1:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5550

Honestly 5.1 is what we should be hoping for, it has more fixes, better battery life, and more features than 5.0. But fat chance I guess. The VS985 leaked Lollipop image (23a) sucked a lot, so I bet Verizon is testing the Beta ROM extensively before reasling the OTA. Should be soon though since 23b is much more stable. • Do your Home Work BEFORE you "upgrade" to snow leopard

Here is my experience with this upgrade... I provide in hopes to prevent others from spending hours and hours with this upgrade...
    1. First, I have 3 video cards in my MacPro. One is an ATI HD3780. Once I upgraded to Snow Leopard, my mac would not boot and just got the black square of death on the screen. I removed the card, then tried to find the new drivers for this card, which do not exist on ati's web site that I could find. I finally found my original install disk, installed the graphics card drivers, reinstalled the card and now my machine boots.
    This Snow Leopard "upgrade":
    2. It removed all my mail plugins, didn't simply move them to a disabled folder, so I had to reinstall them:
    -Dockstar
    -SpamSieve
    3. Many other 3rd Party apps had to be updated. More than any upgrade I have done with the Mac. I had to go thru the applications folder and try every 3rd part application, and a ton of them now had to be re-serialized, and some don't work at all. I had a ton of screen savers that don't work now, and it doesn't disable them it deletes them.
In all this was the most cumbersome "upgrade" I have ever done on a mac, and I have been upgrading macs for almost every version of the os. IF this "upgrade" was labeled as it truely is " a New Install", I would expect all the things I have had to deal with. Calling this an upgrade is downright goofy..
    Good resource BEFORE you upgrade:
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
    Summary:
If you want to upgrade, and you have a mac that has lots of applications on it, you may want to set aside around 4-5 hrs to get your mac working like it was before the upgrade. Also if you have older apps you may want to choose to install rosetta during the install process, and BEFORE you upgrade, get all your serial numbers for all your 3rd party apps just in case. Not all of mine asked for it, but enough did that it took around 4-1/2 hrs for me to get back to the point of before the install. (Glad I didn't install it on all my macs yet!). I am very happy I didn't install this on my work machine or I would be in major trouble, things like fink, etc... would all be trashed...

Do your homework before you upgrade, or prepare yourself and set aside a lot of extra time..

Office 2004 Applications Won't Work in Lion
You must have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite and will not work in Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Clear your home screens before you upgrade

    http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/03/manual-android-2-2-update-for-motorola-droid/
This site has the download for 2.2 although I waited for the OTA.  It also has the beta flash, but again I'll just wait for an official release.  But when you read through the site they recommend you clear your home screens before you update.  Whether it really should be done or not I don't know but I did it and my upgrade has gone flawlessly.  If it helps with a cleaner install it's worth it.  Plus you are going to want to reorganize your screens since you are getting 5 of them anyway.

Pretty much just bragging rights for the nerd world.  A higher score doesn't necessarily mean it's a better phone.  Unless the devices are running the same apps, settings, etc it's a relatively pointless number other than saying mine is bigger than yours.  Below is the Quadrant score of my Droid running at 1GHz from a while back.  Does that mean it's better than the N1, Shadow/Droid X or Galaxy S? not really

  • BEFORE posting, please read this!!

Before posting in this forum, I urge you to read though GlennVidia's sticky post Suggestions on posting and getting better answers and also hpkuo's A collection of tips and tricks
also to new users, please create a signature in the User Control Panel listing your system specifications.
too many people are posting questions like "MSIPVS don't work, please help" but if you don't tell us what your system is, its like asking your GP to diagnose medical problems over the phone - ie, guesswork!! also it helps if you give us your location, ie Seattle, USA; Norwich, UK; Kabul, Afghanistan; for local TV issues.
any users with the MS8606 TV@nywhere Master should first try the Unofficial BETA drivers for this product listed in my sticky at the top of this forum, looking through the release notes for this, it fixes many problems that users have posted about.
plus make sure all your system and vga drivers are up-to-date, here are some links:

For Intel chipset and display drivers:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp?iid=HPAGE+header_support_download
    Installation of MSIPVS:
Download and install the latest drivers for your MSI TV Tuner (either from MSI or the BETA drivers if you are using TV@nywhere Master). After installing the drivers, please RESTART your PC (the installer won't prompt you to do this) BEFORE you install the MSIPVS or MediaCentre III software.
MSIPVS (or other InterVideo software) won't work if Windows has been installed to a partition other than C:, Mega PC users should disable the card reader by either unplugging it from the motherboard, or temporarily disabling the USB controller in BIOS before installing Windows to ensure it sees drive C: as default installation drive.
This should avoid any "antenna & afghanistan" default configurations in MSIPVS, but please ensure your correct region and TV standard settings are selected, and the correct cable / antenna connection is selected.
    Mega PC series
Users using a Mega series barebone PC with MediaCentre III (ugh) should also search through the Mega PC series forum for further assistance there.
    Hope this helps

  • TS3354 i purchased a film on my iphone and am trying to watch it on my laptop, i keep getting a message that says "you must authorise this computer before you can watch this film", what do i need to do

I purchased a film on my Iphone and I am wanting to watch it on my laptop, but i keep getting a message saying "before you can watch previously purchased items you need to authorise your computer"  how do I do this

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • You Must Read This!

    Attention, plz!
In our place, we don’t start the enterprise manager manually. We have a script that does that does that.
We’ve written in gedit, or whichever emacs, etc. and put it in the /etc/rc.d/init.d directory.
All scripts here are started at boot up of the system.
We have a script that’s set to aid in installation.
Now, am calling on all DBA who know little of shell scripting to come up and we develop this. We will have an absent dba-well the system is the system itself. How will that happen? We will Set a cron task that monitors the database automatically. We will have one ‘chief script’ that call on other scripts on demand. As in if its six o’clock and everyone is outta job, it raises that RMAN and backs up!
    2. Releases locks created by users trying to PERFORM DML ON same table Automatically
    3. start database and EM auto on bootup
    4. logs out idle users for a specified period of time.
    5. does automatic audit on suspicious issues, activites.
    6. WELL, AM A YOUNG DBA AND AM OUTTA SUGGESTIONS, ADD HERE FOR OTHERS TO SEE WHAT U WANT TO SEE IN OUR upcoming ‘intelligent database’.
Be constructive DBAS, add whatever, maybe u cant do it, but someone else can! Linux evolved from this remember… group development……..lets do this, reply this post 4 all others to see now!
Well, lets post the codes here………

  • ADOBE EMPLOYEES, DO YOU EVER READ THIS FORUM?

Do you, or is this just a way to make us users believe that you care?
I'm asking because I've read about some features and strange interface behaviours that a lot of people want/complain about for years, and everything's still the same.
Just want to know if I'm wasting my time or not.

Yeah, and I already sent them a revolted e-mail to the "Feature request / Bug report form" page (https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform). If you know any better place to forward this message, please tell me. Anyway, here's my angry letter, if you're curious about it:
    "A question about feature requests
I apologize if this isn't the right place for this complaint, but I couldn't find any better place for it. I also apologize previously to you, the reader, if none of what's about to come isn't of your responsibility at all, but if that's the case, I ask you, please, to forward it to someone that has it, or even better, to someone with the power to do something about it.
I have lots of feature requests, but first I would just like to ask you something. What is the use of the programs's feature requests forums? I know forums are for discussion and help among users, but one would think these would be different, because naturally, you submit requests to the company, not to other users (although it can be interesting to see if they agree with you or not). I submitted a post a month ago asking you, adobe employees, if you ever read that forum (the Illustrator one). It now seems clear to me that you don't, since I got no answer. (Apart from the fact that made me suspect of this in the first place, which is the nonexistence of some features that have been asked for years).
So, my point is: either read what us users suggest, or don't even create such forums, since by doing that, you're just wasting our time, making us believe that you listen to your customers.
I hope you realize my respect for Adobe as a company has decreased enormously because of this and that I feel deeply offended, since basically, you're treating us users like idiots, we who take valuable time out of our working days in trying to help improve your products. And guess what? Microsoft, a company for which I didn't have much consideration for, and usually doesn't give a damn about design, accepted my feedback enthusiastically. Life's full of surprises, isn't it?
Hope to hear from Adobe soon (that's the least yo could do really, if not, just to say "Go kill yourself")
    An outraged paying customer"

  • ITunes 7.2 and iPod issues-- read before you upgrade to it...

I am having issues uploading any of my music I purchased to my iPod since i upgraded to 7.2. Since I have upgraded to 7.2, I have had no success in getting ANY of my purchased music back on to my iPod. Back on it you say? That's because I first thought the syncing issue was due to a single bad corrupted file somewhere, so I restored my iPod, clearing 15GB of music and stuff, and tried to reload everything. I can still upload music I imported from CD's, but any playlist that contains a purchased item causes iTunes to crash before the upload finishes. I have found many other people to have this same problem.
My advice, if you want to keep your purchased music intact, DO NOT UPGRADE TO 7.2 until they work out the bugs. Somehow this stems from their DRM issues, and with iTunes Plus and its DRM Free choices, it has somehow made our older DRM music a major issue. Unless someone has a miracle answer to this, I will keep wishing I still had 7.1, when life was easier and free of problems. When music could roam freely on my iPod, and my iMac would not crash every time iTunes showed it's younger face. Ohhh, the good old days. When music was music and my iPod had music on it. When buying music was buying, not renting. Remember those days?

  • Before You Upgrade to 10.5.2 - If It Ain't Broken Don't Fix

    *DO NOT UPGRADE MID PROJECT.*
*DO NOT UPGRADE BEFORE CLONING YOUR BOOT DRIVE.*
*DO NOT UPGRADE IF IT AIN'T BROKEN*

Here's a list of known new features:

    1. The combo update is found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1052comboupdate.html
And may help with fixing issues with the Software Update version of 10.5.2, or the "delta" version designed just for 10.5.1.
    2. Wait until your mission critical apps have all been tested with it.
    3. Wait until any hardware you use has been tested with it.
    4. Wait until any system addons you use have been tested with it.
    5. Only upgrade after backing up your data at least twice, dismounting and disconnecting those backups.
    6. Disable all third party modification utilities before updating, unless you know the version of those utilities is compatible with the update.
    7. Make sure your hard drive has at least 9 GB + an arbitrary 15% of the disk space free before applying the update + double the update's file size. This will ensure that your update does not overfill your hard disk.
    8. Only upgrade after repairing permissions before and after applying the update.
    9. If you do find issues please report them to http://bugreporter.apple.com/ or http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
    10. If you would like to find out how to troubleshoot after applying the update, wait a couple weeks for people to get their hands on it to see if they can reproduce your issues.
    11. Don't be too quick to blame it on the update, many issues with corrupted files, antiquated drivers, corrupted cache files, and logfiles can make issues surface immediately after applying the update.
And above all, don't panic, and start a new topic thread if you need troubleshooting:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1219&start=0
All the people on this board are here to help you, and we don't want blame to be cast before a solution is attempted to be found, as then we can't know if you really want a solution to your problem.

And if people DO read it, it will be too late as they already upgraded and are only here to report issues, not look for solutions to issues BEFORE they happen.
Too many people think that all this high end editing stuff should "just work." You have to treat your system right....you have to have a little technical know-how. This isn't easy folks.
    Shane

  • YOU MUST READ THIS IF v1.1 IS SLOW

Sorry for the topic title in capitals but I just want to help people like me, who have a lot of work with photos and not necessarily want to spend hours reading posts. If someone can make it a sticky, that would be fine.
WHAT TO DO TO MAKE LIGHTROOM 1.1 WORK FAST.
    1. Go to Edit --> Preferences.
    2. In Preferences go to the tab 'General'
    3. In the tab 'General' click the button 'Go to Catalog Settings'.
    4. In 'Catalog Settings' go to 'Metadata' tab.
    5. In the 'Metadata' tab UNTICK (DEselect) the following options:
    - Write develop settings to XMP for JPG, TIFF, and PSD
    - Automatically write changes into XMP
    6. Click 'OK' to save settings.
And now the rest of the story.
Working with version 1.0 was quite pleasant although not too fast. I've tried different settings, but there was no difference. When upgrading to v1.1 my settings were probably transfered. I don't know what these two options do as I work only with Lightroom and Photoshop. No Bridge, no RAW software etc. I work 99% on JPGs.
When I deselected these options nothing changed in my workflow. When I want to edit in Photoshop I also have the three options (original/copy/original with adjustments). So probably many people won't need that option either. I do not plan to go into the XMP issue any further. Probably there are thousands of people in my exact situation.
To sum things up, when these two options were selected, my computer imported 1940 files in 20 HOURS and after all the thumbs were present the computer was still using 100% CPU power doing something. It took minutes to refresh a set of thumbnails visible on screen (12 thumbs in my case). When I clicked to develop I had to wait 30 minutes for the image to appear sharp in 1:1 view. Lightroom did not want to quit using 100% CPU after 24-27 hours.
When I unticked these options, the same photos imported within 60-90 seconds. Thumbnails were instantaneous and clicking to develop was instant. Also 1:1 was instant.
So sorry once again for the brutal title but I just want to help people so that they avoid reading lots of posts and just getting frustrated.
If anyone is active on other forums, please post the simple solution.
Now I see that Lightroom 1.1 is much better in terms of speed when compared to 1.0.
Machine: PC, Pentium IV 2,6GHz, 1,5GB RAM

If you want the Library function, but don't want all the waiting and loading tedium, let me suggest you use Bridge/ACR4.1 for all the pre Library development and conversion steps in your workflow. including keywording, metadata, etc. Then import to LR. LR Library is not fast, but it is a lot faster if you are only using it for a DB --and perhaps the occasional touch up of an image or two. And, it will do all its importing while you have a cup of coffee.
Then, when they do get it revved up in a future upgrade, you will have your images in the LR DB up to date and ready to go. In the meantime, Bridge/ACR will certainly be faster if you have a lot of images to process.
I process hundreds of images a day at work, and using Bridge/ACR as the first stop in my workflow is fast compared to LR--especially since I use PSCS3 for most of my work--faster because the connection between Bridge and PS is scripted and direct, faster than the one between LR and PS, which is very elementary at this time. The Bridge interface is is more workflow efficient as well.
At this point anyway, going through the LR DB for virtually every operation is just simply slower than working through a cached browser like Bridge/ACR. For some users that is not a price they worry about. For others, like myself, that price is simply too high at this point in time.
I have no complaints, given that Adobe have provided ample workflow design choices for me by utilizing the best of three closely related applications--PS,Bridge/ACR,and LR

  • Error messages vanish before you can read them

Seriously? This is ridiculous. Is there no way to bring back a message once it has fashionably faded away after a few seconds?
    Did nobody read UX 101?

I think their thinking was that making it disappear automatically was better than having to click to close it.  But, you're right. Maybe they should consider making the errors stay on the page with a click-to-close option for "error" type messages.  Success and confirmation messages can fade away but error messages should probably stay there and be manually closed unless you change pages in the BC Admin.
Also-- it wouldn't hurt to have an error log of sorts- a place the Admin user can go to see error messages that the BC Admin area has shown and when it happened.

I bought my 5g 30gb Ipod like 6 months ago. It worked perfictly and I mean perfectly. But about 3 weeks ago I shut down my computer and was just about to disconnect my ipod when it turned off; I did this because I closed iTunes and knew that if the computer was off it did not corrupt my data so intead of opening iTunes and ejecting it, I was lazy and just shut it down. Then the computer started up again so I guess I must have clicked restart and as I disconnected the ipod the DO NOT DISCONNECT thing came up again. I was so freakin scared. The ipod didnt do anything for about 15 seconds. Then it started up again. I immediatly checked my music and almost all songs were corrupted. Most songs showed the wrong album artwok or video artwork. Others didnt have it at all. So I Deleted all the music off it and redownloaded itwhich took an eternity since I have 10 gigs of music. I had done as I did previously with the album artwork. Some songs were normal others had the same prob. w/ the album artwork. My old videos are fine (2 movies 2 shows and 2 little funny cartoons) those of which I got from my friend. Since then I added 25 music videos myself and parts are corrupted. I dont want to restore because I can't find those videos anywhere else(but if there ain't any other way I will).
