Best 4k hd to 1080p conversion?

I have footage that was colored at 4k hd, but my final output will be 1080p.   I need to bring my 4k qt into premiere pro and add my subtitles, credits, etc and output to 1080p.
What is the best way to downconvert this 4hd to 1080 while maintaining the best picture quality?  Should I bring the 4k qt into a 1920x1080 sequence in premiere pro, or keep the sequence at the native 4k hd resolution and scale it down on output via Media Encoder.  Or is there a better solution?
Thanks in advance.
Anthony

Look at it this way...
If you edit the 4K footage with your titles at 4K, you can easily export it to 1920X1080 now, and then later you can go back and export to H.265 for your new H.265 capable 4K television when the time comes.
The only time I would recommend otherwise, is if the 4K footage is not composed as well as you might like it to be. If you wish you could get rid of stuff around the edges, then that is a strong enough reason to put it all into a 1920X1080 sequence.
Example: You shot a bunch of surfing footage and couldn't get close enough to the action. Using 4K in a 2K or 1920X1080 sequence allows you to effectively seem to zoom in while actually keeping the footage at 100%, and just not seeing it all.
Other than that, you might as well "future proof" your product as best you can.

Which format/software offers the best disk usage to record 1080p video from the Logitech 910 HD webcam? I tried using QuickTime but it doesn't do the wide screen 1080p that spans the width of YouTube videos. So right now I'm stuck using the Logitech webcam software which absolutely (pardon my French) *****. It records in wmv format (which looks like the only format it'll allow) and file sizes are huge, on the order of 2gb for 10minutes. Does that sound right?
What other options are out there that'll not gobble up my HDD space like termites that's compatible with the c910?
As a last resort, I was thinking of shelling out and replacing the c910 with the c920 because I hear that'll allow me to do 1080p in QuickTime. But how much of an improvement will that be over the wmv format?

    never done that..
but I assume, best practice would be to let him upload his originals .ts files from his HDDcorder - they are small, allready massivly compressed..and any interim encoding wouldn't add any quality to that....
after doing so, it is you/your brave Mac which has to do the conversion into something useful for iM.. so, it is a single-conversion, no two-step (=lossy) process..
if he has installed Quicktime for Windows on his machine, a h264 compression should do the job too = to send only the edited parts..
divx and esp wmv is of no use on your side..
and no, 'avi' is no format, just a media container.. which could contain codecs, iM can handle, but couldn't either..

  • Best Easy Setup for 1080p?

Just got the new Canon and it captures video in 1080p H.264 Quicktime files. What is the best Easy Setup option since none match exactly to the captured format? The Apple Intermediate Codec at 720p seems to be the most accurate, is there an upgrade available to natively work with the 1080p files? To avoid excessive rendering, is it better to convert the original files in Quicktime Pro to another format? Final use will be to put on a DVD.

You can't use this camera with FCE without converting the material. Canon tried hard to make a great little video camera, but stupidly, in my view, chose to record at 30fps. Also it's in a H.264 proprietary video format that has to be converted to work smoothly in Final Cut.
You could use the QT pro player to convert it, or import and export from FCE. Not sure well i would handle the frame rate conversion which can be tricky. FCP will do a better job as you can work in ProRes or ProResHQ.

  • 1080i to 1080p conversion within Premiere pro cs3

Is it possible to convert 1080i footage to the 1080p format within Premiere Pro cs3 and if it is, is the conversion an enhancement, giving the converted footage that 25 frame filmic quality.
    Thanks,
    Dazzer.

Thanks everyone for such an amazingly quick response to my query.
If I could just expand a little. Working in SD pal (720 X 576)I have a camera that shoots in progressive mode, so in Premiere Pro, I always set the projects up in progressive mode. On the occasion I imported footage shot in interlaced format, I assumed that "Pro" combined the two passes to create progressive footage. Now I could be wrong here (and probably am) and "Pro" could just have cut the frame rate in half using just one of the passes. Does anyone know which of these scenarios is correct. Because if Pro CS3 works the same way in 1080 mode (cutting the frame rate in half by using just one pass), then I'll just have to bight the bullet and get a camera that shoots in true 1080p mode, and that will really hurt!
    All the best,
    Dazzer.
PS Understand completely that 35mm is King, but we all have to do are best with the budgets we're given.

  • Best Export/Encode for 1080p HDTV Display?

I'm looking for today's best practice for encoding an animation that will be looping on a 1080p HDTV panel at an event.
Which codec & container, bitrate etc. is the best for quality, yet reasonable file size? I want it to be as sharp as possible, but would like to keep the file under 1gb if possible.
My animation is 1080p 25fps, lots of imagery and some text, approx 1.5 minutes.
    Thanks!

What device will be playing the file? Many TVs now have a USB port that will enable media playback from a thumb drive, or you could use a Western Digital WDTV device or similar media player.
There is no one-size-fits-all suggestion for the "best" results, however I would start with the H.264 format and then choose a preset to match your needs (1080p25). There are presets for AppleTV, YouTube, Vimeo, or just choose "HDTV 1080p25". The resulting file will have the .mp4 extension which is pretty universally accepted these days.

  • EOS 5D MARK II, Best Codec, 720p or 1080p

    Hello all
I am beginning to use my 5D Mark II not only for pictures but also for movies. I have gone and purchased a copy of FCE4.
Now I have a question, since the file that comes out of the camera is not very good for editing, which codec should I use to convert it?
Is it a good idea to stay in 720p instead of trying to go up to 1080p?
Is 1080p feasible in FCE as I only see 1080i?
    Thanks for the help
    Regards from Barcelona, Spain

Hello, and thank you for your reply
I am an amateur and I can not afford Final Cut Pro.
Answering your questions (the best I can) the 5D Mark II shoots in 1080p, 30fps, H.264 1920x1080
    36,38 MBbit/s
I wonder which codec I should use and if the difference between 1080p and 720p is worth it.
I understand, maybe wrongly, that it is better 720p than 1080i.
Could you help me in this, please?

I'm developing some AS3 that will end up in a mac projector (.app).
This app will stream 1080p videos from the local disk.

Is there any special setting I have to consider in the code or in the publish settings?

  • What spec macbook pro is best for working with 1080p 50fps?

I have recently purchased a Panasonic X900 camcorder and record started to record in 1080p 50fps, when uploaded I notice that everything is lagging in FCPX. The spec of my macbook pro is 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 gig of RAM any suggestions?
    Thanks

What year MBP?  Thunderbolt RAID and more RAM will help.  But you're limited to your built in GPU, which is the biggest factor.
Make proxy media and edit with that.  Switch back to original media when you're ready to export.
Right-click the Event the clips are in.  Choose "Transcode Media", then check off Create Proxy Media.
In Preferences, Playback tab, for Playback select "Use Proxy" while editing.  This point FCP X to the proxy media.  When ready to output, change it back to Use Original/Optimized Media.  Then FCP X will point to the original/optimized clips and read those for full rez output.

  • Best practice for cleaning up conversations after a recieve timeout

We have a pattern where sql server sends a message through service broker and waits for a response (say 10 ten secs), if it doesn't get a response, it will assume a default response and carry on. The response may come later and also end the conversation
target side. However there is no-one to receive the response (which is no longer needed). We have clean up script on a sql agent job but we were wondering if there is a cleaner way to handle these situations

Can't you set up an activation procedure that receives the response message and ends the conversation? I would not expect the activation procedure to be fired, if there is already is someone waiting on the queue.
But it is certainly nothing I have tested.

  • What's the best strategy for cropping 1080p video?

I just shot a panel discussion in 1080p, and because of all the panning back and forth there are parts that could benefit from some cropping (in other words, I would set a keyframe and use the transform tool to enlarge slightly in order to center the speaker in the frame).
1080p is WAY larger than the indended final product. Should I plow straight ahead and assume that outputting to a smaller resolution will take care of concerns over degredation? or should I anticipate issues from the start and specifiy a smaller resolution as part of bringing the video into the timeline?

    not really.
Let's assume I have auto render (or background rendering) turned off. I'll finish all my transform-tool work, then "render all" while I run down to the corner Starbucks.
I think in terms of Photoshop. If the canvas is smaller than the clip, then introducing the video to the timeline -or canvas, would be the point when the clip gets repositioned... or, if the clip is OK, then I would just use the transform tool to reduce it to fit the frame.
Again, thinking in Photoshop terms, if the final exported product is smaller that the original, then using the transform tool to increase the clip size has less pronounced effect. Alas, in Photoshop,  outputting at a smaller size (for web) means you aren't going to see the pixels that got "tore up".
I'm not sure I can expect the same thing to happen in the wonderful world of video editing.

  • What is the best Workflow to output 1080p as a 720P video?

    Hi all,
I have DSLR video shot at 1080P.  I knew the final product would need to be 720P which was fine since I wanted to be able to move (dolly, zoom in or out) the full sized 1080p clips in the 720P timeline.
The problem I am seeing is that the video exports much softer than the original 1080P footage.
So if any of you have a good workflow of how you would perform this talk, I would love it if you could share it with me.
Some of the clips I am allowing FCPX to "fit" the 1080P footage to the 720P frame, other clips I am using at the native 1080P size (larger than the 720P timeline) and doing the post production moves (dolly, zoom in, zoom out)
The 720P video will end up on Vimeo.
    Thanks for any advice,
    Matt

    Easiest way:
    Share > Vimeo
on the share dialog ... next to the last line -> uncheck Set size automatically and select HD 720p Video Sharing
If you need access before exporting to vimeo:
Go back out to the Projects pane and with your video selected:
If you want to keep your original 1080 format as well then duplicate the project
in the inspector, select the Properties pane.
at the bottom of the pane is a wrench icon -> click it.
reset your video properties to 720HD (you may have to settle for 30p rate.)
double click your newly resized video
    "Share" > Export as usual

  • Best Unit of Measurement for Conversion

I'm creating a class with that does a lot of conversion(miles to kilometers, feet to yards, meters to miles).
What is the type of number to use?:
    1. int
    2. double
    3. f oat
    4. long
    and obvioulsy not an int.

There's almost never any point in using float unless you were in a very limited memory environment.
Int and long don't make sense, since these are non-integer quantities.
You could use BigDecimal, but this isn't money, so the fixed decimal precision is probably unnecessary.
    I'd go with double.

  • Best file for editing 1080p

    My set up:
    MBPro - 3.06 GHZ - 8 gig ram
Canon 7D camera shooting in 1080p
    FinalCut and Premier (CS4 etc....)
I find working with MOV files is a bit tough. I tried encoding them with Adobe Media Encoder to mp4 and it's more friendly in terms of playback while editing.
Should I use MOV files in editing?
Is there a preferred format you all use?
    Thanks > Tony

Let me guess...FCP 5.0? Studio 1? That old software isn't designed for the new machines, they are PowerPC based and your machine is Intel based. FCP 5.1 was the first to work with Intel Macs solidly.
And you need to convert the footage to ProRes for editing....using Compressor. FCP does not edit the H.264 files natively, nor the MP4 files you converted to. Look in the EASY SETUP list...THAT is what FCP works with.

  • HTC DNA Best Screen protection for 1080P

So I have the new DNA and purchased a pretty good screen protector. Problem is that it completely makes having 1080P worthless as it dulls the screen. I think the one I have may be anti glare so I am wounder if anyone here has had good luck with a screen protector that does not take away from this screen. Thanks

I use RealLook on my Rezound and almost can't tell it's there. Don't know if they make one for the DNA yet.

  • Best setting for mpeg streamclip conversion of mpeg2 to mov

Through this forum I learned about mpeg streamclip. Thanks so much! Now I am able to convert an mpeg to a mov and keep the audio and quality, etc. Now my problem is that I am building a site, refering to the movies externally so they play in quicktime, which is working but they take too long to load and play. The info is:
    Format: MPEG-4 Video, 320 x 240, Millions AAC, Stereo, 48.000kHz
    FPS: 15
    Data Size: 1.23 MB
    DRate: 340.34 kbits/sec
    Time: 00:00:02.10/15
    Duration: 00:00:30.6/15
    Size: 320 x 240 pixels
That's not a big file but for some reason it's taking long to load. I've seen so many clips online that just play right away and they seam long. What am I doing incorrect when I exported to Quicktime?
Thanks in advance for any help. I've spent way too much time on this part of this project!

Use QuickTime Pro and encode video with H.264. Take a look at this post and look for 'Fast-Start.'
