Best Bitrate settings for laptop DVD play?

This is a question about what encoding bitrate settings are best when customers will play DVDs on laptops as well as DVD players. I've been using variable bitrate encoding and settings of min 2.8, target 5 and max 6 and that seems to work well on the test laptops I'm using. However, the slowest is a pentium 4, which is faster than some of the older laptops still in use. I just read that using a constant bitrate will make it easier for a wide range of players to accept a DVD because the device (or software) has to make fewer calculations when playing the DVD. I've been using VBR because it was recommended for higher quality when transferring HD to SD.
I make educational DVDs that are sometimes played by teachers on laptops. Any suggestions on the best compromise settings that will maintain decent quality and still make it as easy as possible for a range of laptops to play the finished DVD?
In Adobe CS5, I'm currently encoding from 1080p HD to SD from Permiere to Encore using these settings in the media encoder:
Format: MPEG2-DVD
PRESET: NTSC Progressive Widescreen High Quality
Maximum Render Quality
VBR 2 pass
Minimum bit rate: 2.8
Target bitrate 5
Maximum bitrate 6
GOP SETTINGS
M frames 3
N frames 15
Audio preset of 48 kh and PCM 16 bit
Multiplexing = NONE
The quality on the finished DVDs looks quite good. I understand CBR will degrade the quality some. I thought I'd get some input and suggested settings before burning tests using CBR. Is it even worth it to burn CBR at the bitrate settings I'm using?
Finally, I will have the DVDs professionally replicated.

If the laptop has a DVD player in it, you have to assume the hardware is fully capable of the full DVD spec, which means VBR up to 10 Mb/s
I think you're worried over nothing. Just make the DVDs as you have been.

Hi all,
I export my video projects for the web out of FCE using 'quicktime conversion'. Under prepare for internet streaming I choose 'hinted streaming'. After export I convert the qt file into a flash video file via Adobe Media Encoder. Can some one tell me what the best bitrate settings are for getting the info to stream ahead of the play head while still maintaining a good quality video file? I'm not sure I understand the difference between 'target bitrate' and 'maximum bitrate'.

Thanks for the input. Yes, this makes sense now to me. Exporting as 'quicktime movie' will work best when I'm putting the video on a DVD for presentation as it will maintain the high quality before being compressed by iDVD, or by AME for use on web. I am wondering what the two 'uncompressed' options are about in 'save with quicktime conversion' export process.

Best Export Settings for 24PA DVD

Just finished 10 minute production shot with a Canon xl2 in 24p advanced pulldown with 16:9. After exporting with compressor to DVD Studio pro and burning - have some leterboxing and quality is not what I expected. Also - client reports "pause" when playing on new dell. Need the highest quality - but production needs to play on most popular newer model computers. Would appreciate any advice anyone can provide:
1. What is best export setting to use from FCP for DVD production of a 24pa 16:9 project? Should 16:9 be checked under the advanced sequence setting - or does that cause a problem in dvd studio pro?
2. What is best compressor setting? DVDbest quality 90 minute 16:9?
Really need some help on this - we have a fantastic production and wand it to be displayed in the proper format at the highest quality. Thanks so much.

Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.

I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)

Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.

• iDVD Does Region = Zero (to be played everywhere)
• Frame rate - DVD can be in two types PAL (25fps) and NTSC (29.97fps)
If Your material is 30fps then keep to NTSC (29.97fps), if 25fps keep to PAL.
One can feed iDVD the other frame rate - BUT RESULTING DVD WILL BE BAD
I use JES_Deinterlacer (free on Internet) to convert all material to the same and final frame rate

Best settings for older dvd players

anyone have any recommendations on bit rate or other compression settings for older dvd players? everything i produce plays fine on my personal dvd player that actually says dvd-r on the front, but i continuously have problems with clients players having pixel issues of freezing up. i've tried lower bit rates and such but i'd rather not go into all the different angles and just see what you guys say.
I can't be the only person out there that has clients with cheapo players!

I don't think you are going to find a single solution to this problem. Just about every DVD player is going to have problems with some brands or types of recordable DVDs. Some things to consider or try:
1.) Educate your customers about potential DVD media problems. Potentially tricky since not everyone will freely admit or accept that such problems exist.
2.) Burn the DVD at the lowest possible rate (burn at 1X rather than 4X, etc.).
3.) Try a different brand of DVD-R.
4.) In special cases consider using DVD-RW rather than DVD-R (some older players will actually work better with DVD-RW).
5.) Consider using the best possible DVD recorder (I'd recommend Plextor drives mated with Roxio's Toast software).
6.) Use a commercial DVD mastering service (only practical if you want to duplicate several hundred discs -- too costly for small runs).

Best quality settings for AME?

I am new to CS4 and the workflow changes.....but I do have a question regarding AME. In your best experience, what are the best settings for exporting AVI files to use again Premiere? I used to set my export aettings to no recompression, AVI as the codec. However, it seems that is not an option in AME. I am looking for best PERCEPTIBLE quality, NTSC, standard DV for now.....HD later.I see AME has options for "maximum quality"(what does that mean SPECIFICALLY)and 24 bit depth, but are any of those PERCEPTIBLE?

Is it "better" to encode in PPRO then let Encore select the best bit rate for your DVD?
The results should be similar; both use the same encoder. The advantage of letting Encore do it is that you don't have to worry about bitrate before hand.
But if bitrates don't scare you, the real way to get top quality is to export out a Lagarith intermediary file, then use the free HC Encoder to make the MPEGs for Encore.
can the average viewer see the loss?
In my experience, no. Especially without something different to compare it to. But my view is that as a video producer, it's my job to get the best possible results. The average viewer may not be able to tell that yours isn't as good as it could be, but they might well be able to tell that mine just looks better.

   I've been having so much trouble with this issue and it's something that continually frustrates my boss. I have a HD video the settings for it are
FPS 23.98
1920 x 1080, then a few lines down it says 1408 x 792
16 bit,
2 channels
48000 Hz
   What should the settings be when I make a new sequence?
             When I look at it in the window in Premiere Pro I have to contantly 'shrink' the image to fit the window, is that something I should be doing or does it indicate the sequence settings are incorrect?
But more importantly what should the export settings be? I exported a 4 minute long video and the size was 1 GB, I know that's too big.
I need to export it without loosing any quality and export another one that meets the Youtube and Vimeo limits on size.
Vimeo is 500 MB per week, sometimes I upload 4 videos per week. I think Youtube you can only upload 500 MB at a time.
I need to get smaller sizes with loosing the least amount of quality possible AND the best export settings for quality, so I guess I have 3 separate questions-
What are the best sequence settings for HD video?
What are the best export settings for HD without loosing any quality?
What are the best export settings for the size to come out around 500 MB with loosing the least amount of quality possible?

It Stands for "Coder Decoder."
Your format is like a container for your video file. Certain containers can hold certain codecs and not others. Other containers can hold other codecs. Sometimes different containers can hold the same codecs.
This might be a bad analogy but I'll give it a try.
A coffe cup (container) can hold pretty much any liquid you drink, where a red solo cup (container) won't hold scolding water. So, the coffe cup would be your container of choice most likely because it has the most options for liquids (codecs). But, you might want a red solo cup for just a single crappy beer at a party (a moderate quality streaming video on the web). In that case, you don't need all the optoins of another container.
In Premiere Pro CC H.264 is a Container and the Codec in one option. This has been streamlined for web distrobution of video to be played in browsers without things like Flash or special players.
Were as if you choose the QuickTime Container there are over 40 codec optoins (at least on my machine with additinal ones installed) but you may run into an issue where your browser doesn't support QuickTime playback.
I would say that your container is for compatability with players and your codec is taken into consideration when looking at the quality of the compression.
Yesteraday I wrote a blog entery on Exporting from Premiere Pro and found that the MPEG-4 codec inside of the QuickTime container gave me much richer colors than the H.264 container/codec option.

Can anyone give me some advice on the best export settings for a short video that is to be viewed on the web? I have some short, say 2 minute videos that need to be placed on a website and need a reasonable file size. What would the best Format and Preset options be in Premiere? Would it be helpful to utilize After Effects to reduce file size? Thank you in advance to anyone who has some advice!!

Best export settings for HD video playback on computer?

I have shot my video on 1080p witha DSLR and edited it in premiere pro. I exported the video in .mp4 format.
Now i imported the video in after effects and added loads of animation. I want to export it to the best quality for playback ON COMPUTER ONLY. Which is the best export settings for this purpose.
I rendered it in .avi and my 12 minute video had a size of 55GB after render and did not play smoothly in the computer.. PLEASE HELP WITH THE BEST SETTINGS for the above purpose.

You messed up. You should NOT have rendered MP4 out of Premiere to use in AE. You're adding compression and quality loss in between stages. BAD video person!
The easiest thing to do would be to import your Premiere project in AE. That way it can use the original footage too. If, for some reason, you can't do that, you should render a lossless file out of Premiere. Speaking of lossless files, that's what you rendered out of AE. This page explains your large AE file issue.
Anyway, take that large file you render out of AE into the Adobe Media Encoder and render out your final compressed file. Either H.264 or WMV should work well for playback.

for my power shot S5IS, best camera settings for 4 X 6 prints? I would like to have the best setting so when i print out the photos,i do not need to crop or trim. It is close, but i feel it can be better.

The bad news is that you can't do anything in camera to get that result. The good news is that once you understand the possibilities you'll appreciate being able to control how your prints get framed (cropped). Your camera produces images in a 3:4 ratio while a 4 X 6 is a 2:3 ratio so if you don't know in advance that you need to crop some from the top, bottom, or both to make your image fit the 2:3 ratio & frame too tightly when taking the photo you're in trouble. Learn to shoot in a way that allows cropping to match common print sizes, and find a simple editing program to crop in computer. This should be standard practice because even though you may want a 4 X 6 now down the road you might want a 5 X 7 so keep your options open.
If you don't have an editing program that easily does this & you're on a PC download Picasa which is an excellent program for this & it's free. Once you have it running select one of your existing photos, select "crop" from the menues on the first tab & then play around with the different options Picasa has built in to see the effects to your image. NOTE that it won't throw away the data outside the crop box even though it may look like it has. You always have the option to "undo crop". Once you get a result you like you "export" & create a new file cropped as seen on screen WITHOUT modifying the original file.

Best export settings for DNxHD?

I'm working with R3D files (4KHD) in CS6 and need to export them for grading/editing in DNxHD at 1080p. Any tips on the best export settings for this?
Also - is it necessary to downconvert the 4KHD in some way to 1080p before the export process? The files I'm ending up with are a noticeably poorer quality than the original; I'm not sure if this is due to an error I've made during the conversion or if its a natural part of using the codec?

What are the best export settings for mini DVs (now in mov format) for the following uses and how do I input these settings:
1. archive an exact duplicate without any quality loss of an imported mini DV tape. My goal is to have the best quality/duplicate archived digital version of the original mini DV tape for later editing/use?
2. the best quality version of the mini dv tape for viewing on media devices such as WDLive, boxee box, pivos xios, etc?

First, I do NOT write back to tape... so only have a few saved links with no personal experience... but my "general" understanding is that you simply play your timeline with Firewire output active and press the record button on your tape deck
