Best bitrate settings with no quality loss from MPEG2?

I currently use Elgato's EyeHome to watch MPEG2 (DVD) files on my TV (thus no quality loss).
I have just ordered an AppleTV and would like any advice as to the best bit-rate settings for transcoding MPEG2 to H.264?
1280 by 720, 24 fps, Progressive Main Profile... which bit rate for no quality loss / minimal quality loss?
Many thanks
Rick

Many thanks for your helpful comments.
First, I curently use EyeHome: this is a forerunner to AppleTV and very good. I stream 100% quality MPEG2 (converted from .vob files): so the quality is just as watching a DVD.
Second, the Export to AppleTV preset in Quicktime results in much worse quality. For example, taking a 5 minute sample from a DVD results in MPEG2 file size of 188MB. Export to AppleTV squashes this file to 77MB and a resulting drop in quality.
Third, although h.264 does compress file size better than MPEG2, for the AppleTV, the only (published) setting that does not result in drop of quality in terms of resolution, is to rescale upwards to 720i.
Through experimenting, so far using MPEG Streamclip and bit rate of 4MB/ps results in file size that is slightly larger than MPEG2 (as would be expected due to larger screen resolution) with no noticeable reduction in quality. Bitrate of 3MB/ps results in obvious quality drop. 5MB/ps obviously even better, but not noticeably greater than 4MB/ps.
Thanks for all your help again,
Rick

  • Best bitrate settings for optimal streaming

    Hi all,
I export my video projects for the web out of FCE using 'quicktime conversion'. Under prepare for internet streaming I choose 'hinted streaming'. After export I convert the qt file into a flash video file via Adobe Media Encoder. Can some one tell me what the best bitrate settings are for getting the info to stream ahead of the play head while still maintaining a good quality video file? I'm not sure I understand the difference between 'target bitrate' and 'maximum bitrate'.
Thanks in advance for any input.

    Hi Geoff,
Thanks for the input. Yes, this makes sense now to me. Exporting as 'quicktime movie' will work best when I'm putting the video on a DVD for presentation as it will maintain the high quality before being compressed by iDVD, or by AME for use on web. I am wondering what the two 'uncompressed' options are about in 'save with quicktime conversion' export process.
    Thanks.

  • Display size query, + quality loss from iMovie originals

Learning to work the iDVD process, but what is the word on a foolproof sizing method, such that the thing will display OK on any TV? I don't see any way to restrict display size in iMovie, and what good is the TV Safe check, if you can't control the display size?? Also is quality loss inevitable? I'm compiling the DVD from separate files, less than 1 gb ea. I used "full quality" Quicktime compressed versions from the original iMovie file (which look fine in QT); then pulled those back in to iMovie, then shared to iDVD. One of the files looks fine encoded, but the other has weird sizzling-oil standing wave artifacts, even on still scenes from jpegs. Looking for help/comment/expressions of sympathy

    Hi v
Quality of the DVD-disc depends on several things.
    • Highes Quality isn't Top - better is Best Performances (up to 60 min movie)
confused naming - in iDVD'08 there is Pro Quality AND I like it.
    • Media brand - I use Verbatim
    • Type: DVD-R my choise no DVD+R or +/-RW
    • I save a Disc-Image and burn this at an as SLOW speed as possibly (eg x1) with Toast™
(Disc Util tool can also do this)
    • I DON'T USE the function Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie - IT IS DESTRUCTIVE !!
Just drop the movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window - then iDVD do the
rendering and so much better. Especially if there is photos in the movie.
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disc - should be about 25Gb when all material is imported
and structured. This for iDVD to work with - iDVD can't use an extern hard disc as scratch.
(less than 5Gb - result is most probably of no use at all)
This is what come's first to my mind.

  • Quality loss from FCP to Motion

    Hi there!
I'm getting a quality loss in the form of compression-based square artifacting when I send a piece of lossless footage to Motion from FCP. If there's a loss everytime one sends files, why would anyone use it? Does anyone know how to keep the footage lossless while sending between apps?
    Thanks!

Patrick, thanks so much for your help. You're all really helpful on here!
Exporting in prores still displays artifacts and they show up when I bring it into FCP (regardless of whether I import the clip fresh or have it saved back from a "send").
    Here's what I tried:
importing clip directly into a new motion file (not sent from FCP) - movie displays with artifacting - upon rendering, rendered clip still has issue - imported into FCP - still shows artifacting
by importing the motion clip with artifacts into FCP and display in the timeline, FCP changes it's settings to match the clip as usual - I then tried importing the original source clip directly into FCP and when I move it to the timeline, it also shows identical artifacts. However, if I bring in the original clip first, so FCP changes it's settings to match it, the motion clip still shows compression.
Assuming the problem is with the transcode, is this just an issue with this video format working with motion? If so, I assume this means our video team needs to use a different codec. We're shooting a lot of green screen for HD video - any recommendations for a better codec?
Also, is this an issue that Apple can address with future versions of Motion?
    Thanks again!

  • Best Bitrate settings for laptop DVD play?

This is a question about what encoding bitrate settings are best when customers will play DVDs on laptops as well as DVD players.  I've been using variable bitrate encoding and settings of min 2.8, target 5 and max 6 and that seems to work well on the test laptops I'm using. However, the slowest is a pentium 4, which is faster than some of the older laptops still in use.  I just read that using a constant bitrate will make it easier for a wide range of players to accept a DVD because the device (or software) has to make fewer calculations when playing the DVD.  I've been using VBR because it was recommended for higher quality when transferring HD to SD.
I make educational DVDs that are sometimes played by teachers on laptops.  Any suggestions on the best compromise settings that will maintain decent quality and still make it as easy as possible for a range of laptops to play the finished DVD?
In Adobe CS5, I'm currently encoding from 1080p HD to SD from Permiere to Encore using these settings in the media encoder:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
PRESET: NTSC Progressive Widescreen High Quality
    Maximum Render Quality
    VBR 2 pass
    Minimum bit rate: 2.8
    Target bitrate 5
    Maximum bitrate 6
    GOP SETTINGS
    M frames 3
    N frames 15
Audio preset of 48 kh and PCM 16 bit
    Multiplexing = NONE
The quality on the finished DVDs looks quite good. I understand CBR will degrade the quality some.  I thought I'd get some input and suggested settings before burning tests using CBR.  Is it even worth it to burn CBR at the bitrate settings I'm using?
Finally, I will have the DVDs professionally replicated.
    Thanks

If the laptop has a DVD player in it, you have to assume the hardware is fully capable of the full DVD spec, which means VBR up to 10 Mb/s
I think you're worried over nothing.  Just make the DVDs as you have been.

  • Quality loss from Premiere to Encore

    Hello,
I am working on a project in Premiere with these settings.  The project consists of a PowerPoint presentation that was created into a video file. In premiere I inserted AVCHD video clips over the parts of the presentation that required video parts.  I am trying to create a DVD of this project and no matter what I do, the quality (mainly the text on the PowerPoint slides) has a good amount of quality loss...
I've tried using the dynamic link straight to Encore, but the quality almost seems the worst doing this.
I've tried MPEG-2 settings.  The quality is a little better, but still not crisp like in Premiere.
What else can I try??  Thanks!!

Ok, I tried what you recommended and the text still wasn't crisp with the short piece exported.  I have to scale it because the source is 960x720, and the framerate stayed the same as 30fps.  I need this to be crisp and I'm not sure what else to do :/
It looks perfectly fine in Premiere and even when I export it as a QuickTime format with full quality, it looks great.   But as soon as I bring the .mov into Encore it looks terrible... I try DVD and Blu-Ray
    Please help!

  • Convert VOB files with mininal quality loss

I have a media player called WD TV. It does not support playback of VOB files. What format should I convert this to so that it mininizes any quality loss? The player supports raw mpeg2.

There are several programs and workflows that allow one to rip the MPEG-2 contained in the VOB. Depending on the full structure of the VOB and also if the MPEG-2 spans more than one, often the simple renaming of the file from .VOB to .MPEG will work. Remember, this can depend on many factors. See this ARTICLE for some background on VOB's. See this ARTICLE for some suggestions on ripping workflows.

  • Doubts about quality loss from analog to DV.

Hi, friends. Can anyone help me clarify this doubts, please?
From analog media to miniDV tape to iMovie DV file, is there any quality loss? If the answer is yes, in which step does the loss happen? In the analog to miniDV or in the miniDV to iMovie DV file or in both steps?
Resulting quality of imported analog footage to iMovie DV file is the same using either the above technique or the pass through technique that skips DV tape use (8mm camcorder media send to Mac through miniDV recorer)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi onClick,
inside your mini-DV camcorder, some chips do the converting "on the fly" - from that moment, you realize no loss, because then, everything is digital, 000 and 111.- so, you shouldn't realize any difference by taping or pass-thru.
in technical terms, DV has a much better quality then analog, but, for sure, any conversion is lossy. DV has a high compression rate, compared to what is done in a professional studio . but for the normal John Doe as us, you will not recognize any loss in quality after converting.
besides: never judge the quality of the pic on your Mac's screen! computers and tv-sets have very different techniques in displaying video! you can just judge pic quality after playout on tape/tv....-

  • Elements 9, DSLR H.264 - What codec is best to edit with & highest quality?

    Hello All,
I have quite a bit of DSLR footage I recently shot using a Canon 5d.  I have Adobe Premiere Elements 9 and it really chokes down the system.  I have a PC with i7 and 8 gigs of RAM.
What would be the best file format to convert the H.264 footage for editing while maintaining the highest quality possible.  The footage was shot at 24fps.  Please give a detailed description of how to convert it - there are a lot of adjustable settings in the advanced tab of the share section in PrE 9.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brian

    Bill,
Is probably right , as he is most times when he is drinking Aussie wine.
I only have PE 4 and when you bring the H.264 mov in there you get a red line, you are better off rendering the working area as it will run smoother.
Ps.  You should not be having problems with the audio, I have just finished editing 35 mins jazz from a live performance, if there is a red line from the h.264mov files as Bill said , you should render the lot. Changing the audio should be easy, but save as you go
Ah, I do not know why there are two track of video in there, you should have one video+ 1 audio track together, unless you have added another video track ?
Ps. If the playback stops and the music continues you have a problem, It has happened to me.You are running a 32 bit piece of software in a 64 bit operating system, it may help if you download  Running Windows XP Mode with Windows Virtual PC as I used to lose files and windows in PP and PE, but, other experts here will tell you it is not necessary, it is worth a try ?
I would start a new project , Clean the Media Cache, bring the H.264mov clips in one by one and  have no gaps , do not disconnect the audio from the video.
Good luck ( you could try Adobe Technical Service, if all else fails ) ?

  • Help with partial image loss from Viewer to Canvas

Hi--I'm brand new to FCP and would really appreciate any help with my problem. I'm creating 2 second video clips composed of four still images (15 frames...or 500ms each) laid back to back, then rendered. Very simple, I know. The individual images are tiff files that look great in the FCP Viewer. But in the Canvas, part of the image is missing. Specifically, in the center of each image there should be a + sign, about 1cm square. This + should remain constant thoughout the short movie, while the items around it vary (from image to image). (This is a psychology experiment, and the center + is a fixation cross.) The problem is that in the Viewer the + sign is intact, but in the Canvas (and the resulting rendered video), only the vertical bar of the + is present! This is true for every individual tiff, and for the resulting movie. The items around the fixation cross are fine. My question is WHY on earth does the central horizontal bar get "lost" between the Viewer and the Canvas? I've read the manuals, but obviously I've got something set wrong. Also, there is a considerable overall reduction in quality between the viewer and canvas, even though I'm trying my best to maximize video quality. Everything looks a bit blurry. Truly, all ideas are welcome. Sorry if it's obvious. Thanks.

steve, i'm viewing on my 23" cinema screen. i read up on quality and know that this is a no-no; that i should only judge quality when viewing on an ntsc monitor or good tv. the problem is that i'll ultimately be displaying these videos on my Dell LCD, so i've got to maximize what i've got. thanks to the discussion boards i have a short list of things to try now. thanks!

  • Reduce physical size of image with minimal quality loss

    Hello,
I have to fit high res, high quality, images behind a presentation frame, which is only about 800x600. Everytime i reduce the high res images to fit behind the frame, even with bicubic sharper on, the reduction in quality is really bad. Is there anyway i can maximise quality when reducing the dimensions of the image?
    Any help much appreciated...

    Hi Ed,
What approximate sizes are you starting from? My hunch is that you are expecting too much detail to remain in an 800 X 600 which is pretty small. As far as I know the bicubic algorithm is the best for reducing images that Photoshop has ever produced.
You might try an experiment. After shrinking your image duplicate the background layer in the layers palette. On the duplicate layer run Filter > Other > High Pass and set the radius to 0.5. Then change the blend mode of the High Pass layer to Overlay. You may find that you like the subtle sharpening without artifacts.

  • Editing native in HDV with no quality loss

Maybe some of you have already read this article
    http://www.dv.com/features/features_item.jhtml?category=Archive&articleId=174900 673
Because HDV's MPEG-2 compression retains only one frame (the I-frame) every half-second or so and interpolates the others, native HDV editing must cope with a major challenge: Even a simple cut, unless executed at an existing I-frame, causes massive recompression and artifacting in the subsequent frames.
    to avoid this problem:
video should be acquired with wavelet based plugin that doesn't interpolate frames
Footage remains 50i but with the codec we choose
    QUESTION
Lumiere HD seems to be a good choice for managing this work but which codec doesn't interpolate frames and between this codecs which should works best?

    I guess I don't understand the question.
From what I know of LumiereHD, and HDVxDV...they take the mpeg 2 format of the HDV and convert it into an I-Frame format...giving the footage full frames. The Apple Intermediate Codec does this as well.
But if you use Lumiere or HDVxDV, you lose any and all timecode information, and you footage is slighty compressed. The compression isn't noticable, but the loss of timecode is huge.
When working with HDV, I recommend either capturing it natively...or better yet, getting an HD capture card, HDV deck with component outs and RS-422 control and capturing it as DVCPRO HD.
But I have been lucky enough to avoid HDV for now, so I have no practical experience, only what I have heard and read.

  • Best Export Settings For High Quality Upload

Hi..   Sorry if this is a dumb question - I'm not real flash on the technical side of things,  I learnt how to edit by slicing together home-made rally driving videos!! I've not studied or anything..
    Anyhow..
I'm shooting videos for someone who is doing Real Estate Training..   They are being shot on a Canon 7D (HD).
The course this guy is selling has an online option,   and so all the videos I'm shooting need to be uploaded - which poses a problem for me..
I've not been able to find a way to export these videos with any sort of quality without them being 300-400mb in size!   Obviously this is no good as I believe this guy is having the videos hosted on his site (rather than going to Youtube - as people are paying for the course).
So,   I'm trying to find out what the best way is for me to get these clips down to around 20mb or so, but still retain some quality.. Is this possible?
From what I've seen, the clips are going to be somewhere between 5-8 minutes long, and as I said they're being shot in HD..
I'm editing with Prem CS4 on a Windows system running 64bit Windows 7.
I think I've got it covered if he needs these on DVD as I'm working on another training project at the moment which is going to DVD,   but getting vids down to size for upload is throwing me.
If anyone could help me out that would be great..  There is a little urgency to this in my case,   we are shooting on Friday, and he's going to need the files in a week (I've got 3-4 hrs worth of videos to put together)..
    Any help would be fantastic.
    Thanks very much,

  • Best iMovie Settings With Flip MinoHD (3rd Generation)?

What are the best settings to use in iMovie '09 if you're shooting with a Flip MinoHD (3rd Generation)?
Since the Flip shoots video at 50 fps, I think it's probably best to do this:
    • Go to Preferences...
    • Click on the Video button
    • Set the Video Standard to PAL - 25 fps
And when you import video from the Flip:
    • Tick Optimize video
    • Set it to Full - Original Size (so that the resolution of 1280 x 720 is maintained)
    Right?
