Best Dell Desktop to run CS4 Design?

I'm in the market for a new Dell desktop and I want speed, speed, speed... and the ability to do about gazillion things at once. Besides Adobe CS4 Design, it will run typical business productivity and recordkeeping applications. Also Windows 7.
Any suggestions on a model and configuration?

Hello there, I came across your post on the Dell forums, and found you again here. I am looking into the same issue. I have been working on a Dell Precision 7500 with a quad-core Xeon (2.0 GHz), 8 GB RAM, 512 NVidia Quadro FX1600,10k RPM hard drive running [first] on Vista, [now] on Windows 7. I am a Mac guy since forever, and because of this setup I still am. My employer refuses to go the Apple route for our group. I have had tons of problems with the whole creative suite, and have trouble-shot many things, primarily the graphics card (purchased others with no change). Windows 7 helped stop the constant crashing, but is easily more laggy.
I have had screen redraw issues, lagginess, crashing etc. My point in saying all of this is that having the bestest hardware isn't always the answer. When I found what my hardware was I was a little excited, but after using this $4000 setup (1.5 yrs ago) I can honestly say to consider an Optiplex or a Studio (bleh) and spend your money on upgrades. Plan on spending at least $3000 for a decent setup (one you referenced for 'fast fast fast' and lots of multitasking). I would suggest a low-end Alienware, with 8GB RAM, at least a 1GB graphics card (DDR5 memory) and a fast hard drive.
Hope that helps!?

  • Please Help Me -- CS4 Design Premium and CS4 Production Premium on Same Machine

We are a non-profit organization that gets donated software at a great price but you're limited to what's available. We bought the CS4 Design Premium Suite last year (CDs). I called the Adobe sales department to find out if I could run CS4 Design Premium on the same machine. They told me that I could. So I bought CS4 Design Premium as a download. It took a tremendous amount of time just to download the package, and once installed Premiere Pro would not run properly. I called tech support and spent 9+ hours on the phone and no resolution. They had me doing everything -- uninstalled both packages six times. They kept telling me I didn't have enough RAM (and I knew that was wrong because I have been editing using AVID before deciding to go with Adobe -- and I had the CS3 Adobe Premiere Pro, Soundbooth and Encore running on my E drive with no problem before I went ahead and bought CS4 Production Premium).
I took my computer back to the company that built it and they suggested that I replace my graphics card and sure enough, Premiere Pro worked fine. Everything seemed to work fine in both packages except Adobe Acrobat. When I opened a pdf file, Acrobat asked for a serial number, but wouldn't accept my Design Premium serial number. I called tech support thinking they would give me a different serial number for Acrobat or something simple. Needless to say after 3 hours, and uninstalling the software again, they told me I couldn't run two CS4 suites on the same computer. Then a supervisor told me I could run both suites, but I would need to run a cleanup program, uninstall both of my suites and start again!
All software in CS4 Design Premium installs except Acrobat. It is grayed out on the install screen as if it's already installed, and when I try to open a pdf file, the installer pops up, installs Acrobat, and asks for a serial number. When I enter the serial number, it gives me a red "x".
    SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!
I don't know where to turn now ... is there anybody in the United States that I can get help from?
Can Adobe deactivate my CS4 Design Premium and Production Premium and send me the Master Collection CS4?
Please help me if you can!

This is a user to user forum that is not monitored officially by either Adobe Technical Support or Adobe Customer Support. The issue you raise with regards to trading two copies of a suite for one of another is nothing that anyone here can assist you with.
Please contact Adobe Customer Support directly by phone. They are the only ones who can assist you with this.

  • Upgrading from CS4 Design Standard to CS5.5 Design Standard

Hopefully a simple question. I am currently running CS4 Design Standard and wish to upgrade to CS5.5 Design Standard. My version of CS4 itself was an upgrade from the full installation version software of CS2 (I managed to skip the CS3 stage using a previous Adobe upgrade deal). Am I right in thinking that although the CS4 was an upgrade package it is now my 'standard platform' so to speak, and therefore I can use upgrade software again to take me up to CS5.5? I have the serial number for the CS4 software.
    Thanks,
    Richard

That is correct. Make sure you get the right upgrade…there are several.

  • What is the best Dell PC configuration to run Master Collection CS4

    Hi
What is the best Dell Computer/PC configuration to run Adobe Master Collection CS4 smoothly. Also please mentione about the experiences with Dell(if possible with, Dell Australia) I am using a Dell Dimension 8400 bought in 2005 (2.8GHz, 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 1 TB HDD Capacity)
Ur help is much appreciated. Thx
    Pushpa

Dell does not have any sensible 'best PC configuration', not even when you go for the best they offer, which is over $ 14 K and is still lacking. But you have a power cord free. However, if you opt for redundant power supply, you need to choose a second power cable. Strange they did not include that in the option for redundant PSU's.
Dell is only good if they offer a system that meets your requirements fully. If you need anything else than their standard configuration, better go elsewhere or build it yourself. It is pretty easy to build a system for less than the price of a Dell that outperforms it by a wide margin, because their BIOS is crippled and they charge the most extravagant prices for everything not in their standard offer.
If money is no object, try to configure a dual W5590 system with at least 24 GB ECC RAM and at least an Areca raid controller and 8 disks in raid3. But with Dell, if at all possible, the price will be around $ 20 K US or more.

  • My Dell Vostro (running XP SP3) neither recognizes my iPad 2 nor my iPhone 4 correctly! I followed the troubleshooting guides and installed the latest iTunes. Both devices are recognised by my desktop PC running Vista using the exact same cable etc.

    Hello all,
my Laptop (Dell Vostro - running XP SP3) neither recognizes my iPad 2 nor my iPhone 4!
Both devices are working correctly with my desktop PC running Vista with the same USB cable!
I followed trouble shooting guides, checked that the drivers are present, installed, removed and reinstalled the latest iTunes (in the correct order together with the other Apple software components) etc. but nothing works! The interesting thing is that when I plug the iPad or the iPhone in the laptop's usb-port for a second Windows correctly shows the devices either as iPad or iPhone in the "Device Manager" with an exclamation point !!!    But then after a split second Windows allways switches the devices to Digital Camera and the correct iPad or iPhone disappears !!!     =>    That is why I guess that this is a driver problem!
Does anybody have any idea what else I can try?
Is there a manual way to install the drivers for the iPad 2 or iPhone 4?
Many thanks for your ideas and suggestions
    Edgar

Yes I know that (I always google first and ask later ). Too bad I find this out when it was too late. I was already on 4.3.

  • Is there a way i can install one licensed adobe cs4 design premium in both my desktop and lap top?

I just bought a macbook pro and would like to install adobe cs4 design premium on it, but I also like to keep it install on my desk top. Is there a way i can install one licensed application on both computers? Thanks for your help.

Read the license agreement . There will be a lot of impenetrable legalese gobbledygook in it, no doubt, but I bet it will be crystal clear on the subject of how many computers the software can be installed and activated on at once.
    My money is on one.

  • Adobe CS4 Design Premium Compatability

    Hello,
My daughter is required to use Adobe CS4 Design Premium by her School. I will have to buy a new laptop for this purpose. In this regard, I have few queries:
Most laptops come with Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) OS. Since the Adobe website states that this program is certified for 32-bit, I am not sure whether CS4 could perform perfectly on Vista 64-bit platform?
If the answer to the above is yes, then I intend to purchase a laptop with specs of Intel Duo 2 Core T6500 (2.1 Ghz 800 FSB 2MB Cache), 4GB RAM DDR2 800 MHz, display 1280 x 800, and 250GB 5400 rpm hard drive. Is this hardware sufficient to run CS4?
I am a layman as far as technology is concerned. I called up Adobe technical support 2 times: first time they said it wont work and second time they said it will work!!. I am totally confused. Since this means a significant investment to me, I request help and guidance from anyone on this subject.
    Thanks,
    AlokSaap

As you realize, the sky is the limit in terms of how you can configure a system. You could literally spend $10,000 on a new production PC but that certainly would not necessarily buy you any advantage unless you had particular needs that could take advantage of the extra juice that such a pricey configuration provides.
The problem with your request is that it doesn't say really what the typical user of these 2 to 3 new production PCs will actually be doing. For example, are they doing simple web page design in Dreamweaver with occasional entry into Photoshop to edit low resolution images for web display? Or are they jack-of-all-trade designers with windows open in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator simultaneously dealing with graphically very complex and large files? Dedicated to graphics work or are there half a dozen browser windows plus Outlook (or some other e-mail client) open simultaneously?
Personally, I tend to “over-configure” on the basis that if I buy high quality systems not quite at the bleeding edge, but closer to the leading edge, I'll have a system that has a useful lifetime of at least four to five years although Adobe does “allow” its engineering employees' systems to be replaced every three years. I am currently running on a Dell Precision 5400 workstation (current model is 5500) with dual Xeon Quad Core 3ghz processors, 8GB of memory, two 15000rpm SAS (serially attached SCSI) 300GB disk drives, a DVD+/-R burner, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, and an nVidia Quadro FX 1700 video card driving a Dell 3007WP 30" monitor (2560x1600pixels). I have a very pedestrian Dell keyboard, but a Microsoft 8000 Bluetooth mouse. I do run quite a bit of stuff on this system using it as the hub in my office for running backups of other systems (to a bunch of IEEE1394-attached external drives), running InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop often in parallel, running tests against a development copy of the Adobe PDF Print Engine running on my system, as well as having e-mail and browsers open at all time. This system is running Vista Ultimate SP2 64-bit. This is really overkill for most users.
What you can get away for your users with of course depends on the tasks they will be running per my questions in the second paragraph above. Without those answers, some generalities:
    (1)     Unless you are doing heavy video work, you really don't need more than one processor. A single processor at approximately 2.5 ghz or better with either 2 or 4 cores will do fine in most cases.
    (2)     Memory is relatively cheap and will enhance performance more than almost any other resource you can buy today. In conjunction with that, go for either Vista 64-bit or Windows 7 64-bit (stay away from XP 64-bit like the plague). Why? Even though only Photoshop currently has a 64-bit version that can take advantage of 64-bit processing on its own, the 64-bit OS supports more than 3GB of memory and as such allowing larger amounts of real memory, you avoid the tremendous amount of disk thrashing that goes on as part of virtual memory paging operations when a whole bunch of applications running concurrently are competing for a small amount of real memory. I personally recommend 8 GB of memory in conjunction with Windows 64-bit as a minimum, even on new notebook systems!
    (3)     Disk performance is also key, especially if you are dealing with large data files. As such, 10000rpm Serial ATA or 15000rpm SAS (serially attached SCSI) drives make a tremendous, noticeable difference in performance. However, high performance disks are quite pricey, especially the SAS ones since it is now a limited, specialty market. (For new notebook systems, avoid anything other than 7200rpm drives - the difference in cost for a 5400 versus a 7200rpm drive is quite small now. I just bought a new 500GB 7200rpm drive to update my notebook system - the cost of the drive was less than $150.)
    (4)     You don't need a smoking video card (those things that cost upwards of $500 to $1000) to support the Adobe Creative Suite unless you are doing extensive video work or playing high performance video games in your spare time. Typically, a mid-range video card that supports very high resolution (such as 2560x1600) will be fine. What you don't want, either on a desktop system or a notebook computer, is an “integrated display adapter” that shares memory with the CPU. Typically, such video support appears on low end desktop and/or notebook computers - avoid like the plague!
    (5)     For desktop systems, I'm partial to large, high resolution monitors even though my vision is quite good. I'm dealing with graphic arts and I need/want both high resolution and real estate. Although these 30" 2560x1600 monitors are relatively expensive, with reasonable care, they can last for years. I have one such monitor that is now in its fifth year with no degradation of quality. Cost per day is very low to keep your eyes from going crazy and to make your work more efficient. Once you use one these babies, you can't go back!
    (6)     No preference on motherboards. That decision is generally made for you if you order a system from a major vendor. I personally am not into build-it-yourself systems. Not that I can't build those, but quite frankly, my own time is worth something and my biggest problem is having enough time to do everything I want. I get no particular pleasure in DIY computer building.
More if you give me more specifics about the usage profiles for the systems you will need to purchase.

  • CS4 Design Premium is falsely (I think) claiming I have activated twice already

I'm wondering how I rectify this situation. I don't remember activating my recently purchased brand new full license of CS4 Design Premium more than once already. I have it activated on my desktop, and now I'm trying to activate on my laptop (machine #2) and it wont let me. I had previously installed the software on one other computer but let it run in the 30 day trial mode while I was prepping my new laptop. I don't remember activating this machine, and I have since uninstalled from it. Now when I go to install on my laptop the serial number is accepted but photoshop keeps saying "Excuse the interruption but.." the serial number has already been used to activate on other machines. I have only activated on one other computer. So I have no other computer to deactivate from.
I tried calling the adobe support line and the guy on the phone said he was sorry to inform me that the activation server was currently down and that it could be down for TWO WEEKS. Then he gave me an Adobe phone number to call that was located in the philippines (note this was not a toll free number). What am I supposed to do with this. I'm just hoping someone at Adobe can clear this up for me. I'd be happy if someone could just deactivate whatever two computers it is supposedly activated on already so that I can just run the activation again and hopefully get it to work. Do I need to call the Philippines?!?
Is the Activation server actually currently down?!?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -Randy Drisgill

Terrible support from Adobe on such a matter is inexcusable. Two weeks? That's pretty stupid, especially if you happen to be a professional design artist and need this software to make money. The reason it's doing this is because the software is always phoning home when it's connected to the Internet. Even if you've already activated, it still does this for no reason. Provided you have a valid key, all you need to do is edit the HOSTS file on your respective operating system to block activate.adobe.com by redirecting it to 127.0.0.1 (Google specific info about doing this). This will prevent the software from attempting to contact the offline activation servers and should, in theory, allow you to use your software again. It may take a few minutes to take effect.

  • CS4 Design Premium unable to Insall InDesign,Photoshop & Illustrator CS4

I have a Dell XPS 1330M with Vista (32 Bit) Ultimate SP1 with 4GB of RAM.
When I install disc 1 I get an error about halfway through that InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator had errors in the install process.  I've made sure that my anti-virus (AVG) and firewall was off (they were), I had no other programs running.  I've run the AdobeCleanUp app and tried the reinstall again, no luck, same error.
I haven't copied the DVD's yet to the hard drive and run them, I'll do tha here next, does anybody else have another suggestion?  I really want to get to work using the new software and am frusrated that I can't.
Thanks in advance for any/all comments...

    Bob:
I did take you advice and give Adobe a call, it didn't work at first but with the following I was able to get the software installed...
    Here were my steps...
    Uninstalled EVERYTHING Adobe
Used Windows Install Cleanup as well
    Shutdown/Restart
    Install = Fail
    Uninstalled again
    Called Adobe
Recomended I use the CS3 Cleanup (I had used the CS4 Cleanup prior)
Went to C:\Windows\system32 and deleted the Macromed folder
Adobe asked that I create a new user called "Adobe" and install on there
    Shutdown/restart
Install to my username = Fail
During the Shut Down/Restart and Install Adobe gave me a case # and I'd call back if I had any issues.
I double checked to make sure I was installing as an Admin (I was)
    Still no luck...
I shut down and restarted using the Adobe User I just created...
When I went to the Programs I noticed that not only was CS4 there (not all components) but that Adobe Reader 8.1.2 was there, which I had already uninstalled. I had another user account set up so I deleted both of them.
Reran CS3 Cleanup (totally different results just on that alone)
    Shut Down/Restart
    Installed = SUCCESS!!!!
It took me 12 hours to do it but at last I can use CS4 Design Premium!!!!

  • Anyone install CS4 Design Premium on Windows 7 Professional?

I presently have CS4 installed on Microsoft Vista Ultimate SP2 32-bit o/s using a Intel i7-920 processor .  Runs cleanly with no problems whatsoever.  I am in the process of upgrading the o/s over to Microsoft Windows 7 Professional  but risk de-activating my CS4 I thought I would throw this question out to the readership.  I am fortunate enough in obtaining this new o/s prior release and have been tasked to see if all our mission critical applications migrate over cleanly.  Sad to say deactivating, re-installing CS3/CS4 can be a nightmare (ask me how I know!) so risk taking down a good CS4 install using Vista down it it's knees I thought I would ask.  Has anyone by chance tested installing CS4 Design Premium on any of the new Microsoft 7 o/s' ?

I think I found a solution to running CS4 on Windows 7 (pro 64 bit in my case). There were a few variables I eliminated so I'm not sure exactly which one was key.  I am part of an office domain with permissions etc in effect, and that may have been part of the issue. Basically the installer would run but hang around 40% when it was installing "language packs" or "device central" components. It would not generate an adobe error, rather just the usual "program is not responding" error in win 7. If you don't understand my steps, just google the details and you should find methods for each instruction.
    What I did:
    1. Locate and run the clean script for CS3/4/5 from adobe to remove ALL installation files.
    2. Turn off User Account Control in win 7 users settings in control panel.
    3. Make sure you find your C:\users\public\documents (calls itself "public documents" in the file browser) and edit the permissions for that folder. Give full control to any user in the list just to be safe.
    4. If you are using the downloadable installation as I did, allow the files to unpack onto your desktop as default by the adobe unzipper program.
    5. Completely remove ANY antivirus/antispam software and make sure windows defender etc etc is not running. Also turn off windows firewall.
    6. Reboot your computer and ensure NO adobe products are listed in the programs and features list under control panel. If there are, remove & reboot again.
    7. BEFORE BOOTING: unplug from the network, turn off all wireless so that your computer is completely isolated.
    8. Run the installation again, and hopefully it will work for you as It finally did for me after 6 hours of troubleshooting and reading these #*$*# forums.
