Best development framework for a beginner

Hi, can somebody recommend a good( the best around if there is) framework for a beginner to start learning.
i don't know a lot about frameworks and j2ee but i'm starting to learn.
i don't have any hands on experience yet with any of them, i can't decide
on which one to start with, i read a bit about spring,struts,EJB it looks like Spring's is the best
but as i said i am not qualified to judge.

all am asking for is an opinion from somebody who has experience and who knows what he's talking about.
i don't have experience at all with j2ee development so i did some research and i learned that the best way to develop is using a framework
i did some more research and i read a bit on each framework i know there's a lot of them but again from my readings i concluded that these are the most widely used but again i know nothing about them, i'm reading spring docs now in fact but what good would it be if i find out that some other framework is better more used, more robust..?.

Best development platform for enterprise applications on the Oracle DB

We have been developing enterprise applications for many years based on Oracle technologies, right now we have reached a significant number of systems developed with Oracle Forms 6i and a few ones with Oracle Forms 10g. Although according to Oracle Statement of Direction of March 2012 Oracle remains committed to the support of Oracle Forms and Reports, there won’t be new features added to these products, and we can predict that eventually they are likely to be discontinued. Although we will continue using the Oracle Database, we have started to look for a replacement of our development platform, for the new developments and the migration of our existing Forms applications. Our Oracle database is installed on a Linux server. We are also planning to retain our existing programming staff and most of them have no experience with other tools or languages.
This way, I would like to hear from people who has faced the same problem what development platform (development framework, IDE, programming language, application server) they chose for developing their next generation enterprise applications and what factors they considered in making that decision.

Your question is not an uncommon one. However, my opinion is that which product or technology you use for an application should not be solely based on what is "cool" today. Some of today's most popular product may not be able to do what you need them to do or at least may not allow you to do it easily. You need to use a product and/or technology which falls into this group:
1. Does the product/technology offer the features our application will need?
2. Does the product/technology scale to the level we need? Both in user base and application size?
3. Does the product/technology offer the level of security we need?
4. Does the product/technology fall in line with our development team's skill set?
5. Does the product/technology fall in our budget?
Whether you are speaking of an Oracle product or competitor's product, all have their advantages and disadvantages.

Best Practice Advice for Xcelsius Beginner

This is my first post to the community. Please forgive my naivety. : )
I've read about half of the 400 page Xcelsius manual, and am still confused about using individual cells to comprise a series. My client has a ready-made Excel spreadsheet generated from Crystal Reports that I am using within Xcelsius Engage.
Specifically, I am trying to build an easily reusable Xcelsius document that does not require the spreadsheet to be changed (additional functions/formulas). I would like my client's admin to be able to just copy and paste the data into Xcelsius and publish.
But when I try to use 3 separate calls to comprise the values of a series (to calculate total revenue), the text box in my line chart properties doesn't display my selection. My question boils down to this: Is it best to custom design a spreadsheet (and require my client to invest additional human resources), or is it best to strive for advanced Xcelsius programming and just use a ready-made spreadsheet?

But what I am wondering is if I should ask the client to design a new report format to easily integrate with Xcelsius, or try to work with the client's ready-made (designed for a different purpose) spreadsheet, and through advanced Xcelsius programming (multiple series, insertions, etc.), manipulate it to do what I need it to.
Specifically, what I have been given by the client is a spreadsheet broken out by month, that on each month page there are 3 cells that correspond to different sources of revenue. In a perfect world, I would change the spreadsheet design to calculate a total for each month, so I could use the monthly totals in a simple line chart. What I am wondering is am I asking for an unnecessary amount of hassle trying to do this through multiple series, insertions, etc., and should I just ask the client to create a new report format.
Additionally, can someone tell me if it is even possible to pull values (in the case described above, monthly totals) from different pages to comprise a series?

In my experience I would say that Starling is the most easiest and Genome2d has the best performance, although it is the most difficult to get started with.
Also I would say that at the moment (AIR 3.2 / 3.3 Beta), if you are targetting iOS, you can still gain better performance with GPU (+some optimizing) compared to Starling at least. I would like to design a into for a website, but I don't have the time to learn Flash. So it there an easier way of doing it?

I agree with everyone about "flashed" sites. Still, if you want to mess around with some basic animation (animated GIF's, etc.) there are a couple of pretty simple programs to get you started like Web Painter which is also a lot cheaper than flash and has a much more manageable learning curve. Also, there is a "poor man's photoshop" called Paint Shop Pro that comes bundled with a very simple A.G. app called Animation Shop. Unfortunately, the program only runs on windoze so you would either need a PC, Virtual PC or an Intel Mac with "boot camp" and expee.

Best development Device for PP and PBP

Hi, J2ME newb here... I've got a lot of experience with Swing and AWT (http://izoom.us), and am now interested in developing an app or two with the J2ME PP and AWT subset (or maybe Xlets using PBP, not sure yet).
Can anyone please recommend devices on the market that support these two profiles, that would serve as good testing tools? Or possibly emulator software too? I'm interested in both. (especially of OS X).
Any advice to a developer new to PP? Having a hard time finding information...

Are you saying that you have an iWeb blog hosted on a 3rd party ftp server which allows visitors to add comments? That would be a first since the following has always been part of iWeb's Help file:

Currently if the site is published directly from iWeb to the 3rd party server the RSS feed and slideshow subscription features will work. Is there an application development framework for HTML5? Not the generic CSS and Javascript version where you build your own app, rather some kinda framework like Flex where everything gets embedded into the Canvas and javascripts gets cretade as you build your software.

If you mean "I want to use a full blown IDE," get any current version of Visual Cafe, JBuilder, etc., etc. They all support Swing.

suggested by my dear friends........It ALL depends on what your short, medium and long range objectives are.
For example: do you want to be
- an Oracle DBA expert;
- an Oracle database programming expert;
- a general database programming expert with a specialty in Oracle;
- an Oracle application programming expert;
- a general application programming expert?
Personally I would encourage being a general database programming expert with a specialty in Oracle. This is probably the rarest of the group, the least understood, and the most needed in the industry. If you were to follow that path, I'd recommend a very very strong grounding in SQL - which 99% of all programmers I've met do NOT have - before moving forward to any procedural enhancement to SQL (such as PL/SQL, Java, TransactSQL, etc.)
I am the first to propose Tom Kyte's books in the right situations, which usually include:
- dealing with someone already reasonably competent in SQL and development;
- someone who thinks that porting from SQL Server to Oracle is a snap, since they are all 'just different dialects of SQL', or;
- someone who is seriously looking for guidelines on approaching Oracle application development and tuning.
For a complete beginner, my list of books stands in my preferred order (one at a time), with the addition - at the end - of Tom's books.

You will need a Mac, with OS X 10.6+ on it, to be able to develop iOS apps.
