Best partition setup with btrfs for / on SSD

Hello there,
I am about to set up a new Arch box and have decided to go with btrfs for / with lzo compression turned on. However, I have some quesitons:
- should I create a dedicated subvolume for /?
- should I use a subvolume for /var or create a partition for it? If create a partition for it with - let's say 15GB - that would mean that all r/w access for it will happen on the same blocks on my SSD and thus incrase wear on the SSD as opposed to not limiting /var to its own partition. But then again, I have no idea if brtfs with lzo compression would be a good option for /var...?
- Should I make a dedicated partition for /home on the SSD and if yes, should I opt for ext4 or btrfs? If the latter, should I turn on lzo copmression or not?

The idea of subvolumes defeats the purpose of separate partitions, those are soo 2001.
Format it with GPT, create a subvol for / so you can do easy snapshotting and fallback.
Don't put /var into a separate subvol as it contains your pacman db.
But definately one for /home.
And compress=lzo for all of them, the compression is smart and will not bother trying to compress things that can't be compressed, unless you force it, which you shouldn't.
Also don't use -o discard, use a nightly fstrim cron job instead.

I've just bought a Western Digital 'My Passport' 320Gb USB (no firewire) portable external harddrive for backing up my data prior to iMac repair.
I also plan to totally wipe my PPC iMac and reinstall it with Leopard.
I erased the external HD, zeroing out the data from it's previous owner, and reformatted it as Mac OS Extended (not journaled).
Now I realise that it might be even more useful than I'd imagined.
I'd now like to partition it so I can use Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable copy of my entire iMac while using the rest of the drive as a separate partition for just backing up data.
Ideally I want to be able to use the drive on both Intel and PPC Macs and even PCs, is this possible? How should I format the drive to achieve this?
I've heard I should format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) HFS+, what ever that is
I'm currently running OS 10.4.11 but plan to buy Leopard and install that after the wipe.

For what you want to do, there is a mismatch between your PPC computer and the external drive that you bought.
With a few exceptions, a PPC Mac requires a firewire external drive for booting and will not boot from a USB drive, regardless of which OS is installed and regardless of the partition scheme and volume format on the drive. I also have an iMac G5, and mine will not boot from USB.
If you do exchange your drive for a firewire drive, do not get another Western Digital model to use with your G5 - many external WD firewire drives will not boot a PPC mac. See [this page|http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787]
If you want to keep your present USB drive, you can still partition it with one partition for a backup clone and another for "other stuff". With respect to immediate use for recovering your stuff after a clean Leopard install on the HD, I think that Migration Assistant will still work, though I haven't tried this. As for the future, the problems with a clone not being bootable are 1) You can't test it to see if it works OK, and 2) If you do need to restore from it you'd need to boot from "somewhere else" - I think you could boot from an install disk and use Disk Utility's Restore feature to clone it back.
With regard to PC access, a PPC mac normally requires an Apple Partition Map partition scheme on the drive for booting, and such a scheme does not allow for the FAT32 volume format that is readable by PCs. However in this case since your PPC mac can't boot from it anyway, you could partition the drive as GUID. This would allow the main volume to be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for the nonbootable clone, and would allow the extra volume to be formatted as FAT32. If you eventually got an Intel Mac, a clone from it to the main volume would also then be bootable.
But what I would do, if feasible, is exchange the USB drive and get a non-WD firewire drive instead.

put a memory card in the slot and run from the command line:
sudo modprobe usb-storage
If this solves your problem, try adding usb-storage to your /etc/modules file so that when your computer restarts it will automatically load the usb-storage module.
You may even have to manually mount the memory card. Install gparted from apt-get and check if the memory card does not show up as an unmounted storage device...then you can manually mount it by using the command line. You may also have to edit the fstab entries to make it hot pluggable.

If the firewalls operate in the same fashion as Cisco ASAs, then the inter-firewall link doesn't carry traffic. It's for failover detection and HTTP replication only. But like I said, I'm not familiar with this vendor's products.

How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro, is to arrive on Monday (1/7). I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels. It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program. Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash, is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

Thank you and to others that responded, I will take the advice to not enable trim at this time,but will visit the issue at a much later date. Maybe Apple will find a way to securely allow us to TRIM 3rd party SSDs. Iwill look at an annual manual TRIM in a year or so, if that is a good solution. Does this approach sound reasonable? This is my first ever post to this problem solving group. Thanks again also to ALL previous contributors.

Should i use compression with btrfs, an ssd, and a 1.6 atom processor?

My netbook has a 60gb ssd with btrfs, is it a good idea to enable compression? My main goal for this net-book is battery life.
If i do enable compression only new files are compressed, is there a way to walk over old files and compress them?
My current partition looks like this:
/boot ext2 200mb
/ btrfs 7g
/home btrfs 46g
I need to make my root larger because i am running out of space so i'm going to be messing with the file systems anyway this suggests that i place my entire system in a subvolume, is this something i can do retroactively, or would I have to do a reinstall, which i'm ok with

Compression can help with SDD longevity (less data written) but not the battery's longevity (which will require charging more often and eventually start to hold less charge). I would probably not enable compression at all. 60 GB is plenty.
If you think about it, while you can't actually replace either of them in a netbook, the battery is more important - at least in a portable device. Even if the SSD gives out in 5-8 years at least you could still boot from a USB stick and breathe some life into it. But replacing the battery... well, it's probably not gonna happen. And by that time it will probably end up on a garbage landfill anyway. Pff... Consumerism.

I want to improve my disk setup for Adobe Premiere CS6 because I got long loading times.
My current setup:
Crucial RealSSD C300 60GB SSD for the program
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD for media and Media Cache Files
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD for projects and exports
My planed setup:
new: Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD for the program
Crucial RealSSD C300 60GB SSD for Media Cache Files
2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD with Raid 1 for media
new: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD for projects and exports
Is this the best solution to improve the performance?

None from a performance point of view.
And should I use the 60GB SDD for the Media Cache Files?
That is much too small. Depending on your projects, you will need at least 256 GB, but possibly even more.
With only 350 GB of media and projects, my media cache is already 72 GB.

Advice on best way to setup Disaster Recovery for SOA Suite 10.1.3.4

Hi Everyone,
I need some advice on the best way to setup Disaster Recovery for a SOA Suite 10.1.3.4 install deploying JSF/ADF OC4J applications.
The way we are trying to do it at the moment is manually copy the "applications" and "applications-deployments" folders for the OC4J application on the production server, then compress and ship the files across to the DR application server nightly. (We don't require high availability).
In the event of a disaster we then extract the files and copy to the OC4J instance (pre-created and configured) on the DR server. Unfortunately to date we haven't been able to reliably setup a DR application (seem to mostly get 404 errors etc), even though the OC4J application has its connection pool resolved to the DR database and is showing as "up" in the ASConsole.
My question is, is there a more "native" way to do what we are trying to do. We do not have Enterprise version of SOA Suite or 11g database so any advanced recovery features are not an option. The setup is also stand alone, i.e. we are not using clustering or RAC etc.
Any ideas would be really helpful.

PS we are also running the production apps server with Oracle Application server 10g 10.1.2.3.0 as the HTTP apache server (with Forms, Reports and Discoverer deployed) and the SOA Suite 10.1.3 applications use the 10.1.2 HTTP server via the HTTP to AJP bridge. So the 10.1.3 OC4J instance is configured to use AJP on port range 12501 - 12600.

For enterprise solutions, AS Guard would work.

First, I suspect Apple fine tuned its choice of SSD size for the Fusion drive based on the best performance/price ratio. I'd be surprised if a larger SSD provided any improvement that would justify the added price of a larger SSD.
Second, if I could justify the cost of a 960 SSD drive I wouldn't bother with a Fusion drive!

Is it possible to define a partitionned cache (with data into the heap) with off-heap storage for backup data ?
I think it could be worthwhile to do so, as backup data are associated with a different access pattern.
If so, what are the impacts of such off-heap storage for backup data ?
Particularly, what are the impacts on performance ?

I want you to tell me if my Linksys WRT 1900ac is configured correctly and the DHCP server IPs are correct.
When I enter 192.168.1.1 in the browser it takes me to my netgear modem web setup page. So How do I get to make all the modem & the wifi in the range of 192.168.1.1 etc.

Sorry you didn't get an answer faster but you have to know this is a peer to peer forum. it is users helping other users so not always the quickest way. First off, can you change your ISP router to modem only mode? It is best that way as you will get conflicts such as what you are seeing when there are two routers in the same link. You are getting the ISP router when you enter 192.168.1.1 because that is its address on the LAN side. It appears that your router is getting set to a 10.x IP because of the setup. You have two routers trying to work with DHCP so that is also an issue. If you can change the ISP router to modem only mode then once it is up disconnect it from the router and do a factory reset on your router and make sure it has the IP of 192.168.1.1 and you will then be able to make any changes you need to. the default login is password of admin and leave the user blank.

SSD setup suggestions (looking for)

Hi, I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15" i5. I was thinking about switching to an SSD / HDD setup, using the Optibay to replace the Superdrive.
My dad recently bought a Macbook Air, and it boots in like 7 seconds, it's incredible. Will I have the same performances as him with a SSD/HDD setup?
Second question? Is it better to put the SSD in the original hard drive place or in the SuperDrive place? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the two different configurations (for instance, since II can now hear my drive spinning more than before, can it be put to stop in the Optibay when it's not needed?)?
These are the two SSD I find more appealing, what do you think about them?

Also, some reported that having the two drives slows boot for some reason compared to an SSD only setup, why is that?

I have just done a SSD upgrade to my MBP 2010 i7.
As for the SSD i went with the OWC 240GB, it took me ages to decided on what to get but im glad i got it, its just great.
My set up with the SSD and HDD took some thought. My SSD sits in my optibay and the HDD says where it is for a few good reasons.
The MBP 2010 only has SATA II so it makes no diffrence in speed where you put your SSD.
Moving the HDD could cause you problems with the motion detection and spin down, seeing it makes no diffrence where the SSD goes i thought i would keep the HDD where it was designed to be.
I have the full OSX, applications and some documents on the SSD, i have left the SSD the location of my "Users location" as this means i can un-mount the HDD when i like (saves a little power). I have short cuts for the folers i have on the HDD (music, movies and photos) and have set up itunes and apearure to read from the HDD.
I have to say i reinstalled a few times to get it just right and it work really well,
