Best Practice: changing a user's short name?

I administer the OS X Servers and user accounts at my school, where typically a few teachers will come back from the summer having gotten married and changed their names.
We use a standard for usernames of first letter of first name and last name, where Ann Smith is 'asmith' - when she goes and gets married and wants to be 'ajones' at the beginning of this year, what is the best way to go about this change?
Users have network homes, and IMAP email is on a separate server. Here is what I was thinking:
For the user's files, make a new user with their new username, 'ditto' the contents of the old username's home folder to the new username, and chown/chmod the new folder's contents to match the correct permissions.
For the user's mail, use SirAdmin to add ACL's to the old username's mail folders to be able to read them as the new username, have the new username set up their mail and copy the contents of the old username's mail to their new IMAP folder(s).
Does this make sense or is this far too complicated?
Do I just tell these users to log in using their old name and burn their essentials to a DVD and just worry about helping them with their emails?
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks
BC

Hi Blair
These look like good methods to me and should work. You could consider creating a second short name - something suitable like their first name instead? Enable Mobile Account (PHD) for the affected users and log in using that short name. Their account should now be created locally as well.
If you have only a handful you could use a spare machine to do it with yourself? More on this later.
If you these users have IMAP accounts you could enable POP for them as well. As you/they log in to download from the server their current home folder their mail should be downloaded also.
What you have after that is effectively a back up of their home folders and mail kept locally on a client machine or a designated machine you decided to use. Delete their account, create the new long and short names, create the additional short name (exactly as it was before), log in with those details and upload the locally stored information back to the server. There should be no need to worry about permissions etc.
What you could do is send an email to the affected users outlining the steps they need to take to achieve what you want. Minimal effort with maximum gain.
When you are happy kill the mobile account option as well as deleting the additional short name. Send another mail advising they use the first short name for logging in. There'll be a little tidying up to do in deleting the locally created home folders but you can do this at your leisure using VNC.
I would have in place one of the other methods as well - just in case.

  • Migration and User Acct Short Name

    It took only 4 hours via an ethernet cable (probably at optimum speed) for Migration Assistant to nicely transfer my "entire universe" over from an old PowerMac G5.
    Unfortunately, I had my User Account Short Name starting with "G5" so my new blazingly fast intel iMac now has the unchangeable short name as the same "G5..." Needless to say, it gets confusing on the network.
    I remember a long time ago doing the long procedure in changing the short name. Explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428
    And it was quite a messy, problem-prone procedure. I would hate to do it again, despite what they describe as better executions and error-free processes in the latest OS.
    Question:
    What would be the best strategy to straighten things up?
    Is there some halfway trick in changing the short name during the MA procedure that I missed?
    Or should I first change the user name in the old G5 (OS 10.5.8), heck with any messed up permissions, then hope that MA and OS 10.6.2 will clean it up during another 4-hour transfer?
    Or something else I'm missing? Any other tricks?
    TIA

    FWIW, I use exactly the same user account name on all the Macs in my household. There is no confusion about which Mac's contents I'm accessing because each has a unique computer name.
    This also simplifies access to my other user accounts from whatever Mac I'm in front of because each Mac recognizes me as the same user with the same access privileges to that account's contents.
    Basically, the user name says who I am & the computer name says who it is.

  • Best practice to share user defined reports?

    What is the best practice to share user defined reports among team members?
    Currently I can create a folder under the Reports/User Defined Reports system folder and any reports or subfolders under that can be exported into xml by right-clicking on the folder and selecting 'Save As'. Then sending the file over or put it on a shared point or check in to SVN, then the other team members can right click on the User Defined Reports system folder and chose "Open report..." and select the xml file.
    Is there any more elegant way?
    Is it a good idea to share the C:\Users\lgal\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\UserReports.xml on Windows, or ~/.sqldeveloper/UserReports.xml (on Linux) among users?
    Is there a standard way to bring this under standard SVN control in SD?

    I think the best thing would be if someone set up a config sharing site!
    It would be very easy to do on system like drupal or e107.  People could register and submit their configs to different download sections based on what sort of configs they are.  My site runs e107 so it's not hard to see how easy it would be
    It would be easy to set up - I could do it in about 30mins but I think I have done more than enough of that!  There seems no need to officialize it to any degree and burden the server even more.
    I guess user-cb could host it couldn't?  If you restrict people to posting only small config files with no icons and link to big stuff offsite it should be tiny bandwidth usage.
    That's what I would do anyway

  • Change user's short name?

    Hi and thank you in advance for any assistance you may give.
    I am administering a group of computers for an office of about 20 architects. There is an XServe running 10.5.8 server. One user, when her server account was set up years ago had her name misspelled (Katie instead of Katy) on her server account. This has caused a few problems.
    In an attempt to resolve them I went into the Workgroup Manager, changed her account's name and added a short name which included the correct spelling. The services she accesses are file sharing and calendar, she is running 10.7.4 on an iMac.
    iCal, unfortunately, when I set her account to use the new short name, does not work and gives a 403 error. Setting the account to the previous short name works fine.
    I do not seem to be able to delete the old incorrect short name from her profile on the server. Is there a way to do this, and will this allow the new short name to work in iCal? Will it cause other issues?
    Any replies much appreciated.

  • User's short name greyed and can't be changed

    Hi all I hope I'm in the right area for this post. Here's my problem:
    When I create a user I can give them a short name or accept the default, then I save the user. However, if I go back to that user to change the short name It is greyed out and cannot be changed although I can add additional short names that can be modified. Note that I am logged in and authenticated with the Directory admin's password. It was a problem in 10.5.4 and now 10.5.5 as well.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thank you

    Hi
    Firstly you don't have a problem. Its normal behaviour.
    When you first create a User and key in the User's name the first short name gets created at the same time. Prior to clicking Save you can alter it then and only then. As you've already seen you can add further short names as well as editing them. To change the primary short name you delete the user account and create it again exept this time alter the primary short name to suit your needs.

  • Best practice for searching on surname/lastname/name in Dutch

    I'm looking for a best practice to store names of persons, but also names of companies, in my database.
    I always store them as is (seems logical since you need to be able to display the original input-name) but I also want to store them transformed in some sort of way so I can easily search on them with LIKE! (Soundex, Metaphone, Q-Gram, ...)
    I know SOUNDEX and DIFFERENCE are included in SQLServer, but they don't do the trick.
    If somebody searches for the phrase "BAKKER", you should find names like "Backer", "Bakker", ... but also "De Backer", "Debecker", ... and this is where SOUNDEX fails ...
    Does someone know some websites to visit, or someone already wrote a good function to transform a string that I can use to store the names but also to transform my search data?
    (Example:  (Pseudo lang :-))
    function MakeSearchable (sString)
      sString = sString.Replace(" ", ""); //Remove spaces
      sString = sString.Replace("CK", "K");
      sString = sString.Replace("KK", "K");
      sString = sString.Replace("C", "S");
      sString = sString.Replace("SS", "S");
      return sString;

    Thanks for the response, but unfortunately the provided links are not much help:
    - The first link is about an article I don't have access to (i'm not a registered user)
    - The second link is about Integration Services. This is nice for Integration stuff, but I need to have a functionality within a frontend.
    - The third link is for use in Excel.
    Maybe I'm looking for the wrong thing when wanting to create an extra column with "cleaned" up data. Maybe there's another solution from within my frontend or business layer, but I simply want a textbox on a form where users can type a search-value like
    "BAKKER". The result of the search should return names like "DEBACKER", "DE BEKKER", "BACKER", "BAKRE", ...
    I used to work in a hospital where they wrote their own SQL-function (on an Interbase database) to do this: They had a column with the original name, and a column with a converted name:
    => DEBACKER => Converted = DEBAKKER
    => DE BEKKER => Converted = DEBEKKER
    => BACKER => Converted = BAKKER
    => BAKRE => Converted = BAKKER
    When you searched for "BAKKER", you did a LIKE operation on the converted column ...
    What I am looking for is a good function to convert my data as above.

    Tim

  • Right or Wrong? help: user account short name has Capital First Letter

    Hello
    I have the same issue as a post in the Mountain Lion discussion group.  It doesn't seem to be getting an answer.  So I thought I would post it here, being that I do have Snow Leopard.
    The Mountain Lion post is here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21665861#21665861
    Here is MY question::
    Can anyone answer this?  I have this same thing.  I've had this Mac since 2010, too, I think, at least two years.  I don't remember being asked to use lowercase, nor actually typing in the Capital letter.  I stumbled upon the realization when I was using my Macbook and my user name whille different does use all lowercase.  The Macbook is newer.
    I've been running this Mac with the first letter Capital for the short name with no problems that I know of.  I do have Time Machine backups that I don't really want to lose access to.
    What are the benefits and pitfalls of using the method etresoft explains to change it to all lowercase??  Should I do it just to do it and be in line with Apple's guidelines or should I leave well enough alone??  Which way will cause me MORE problems?  Running with the Capital letter or going through the process of changing it to lowercase??
    What kind of problems will I run into if I change it or don't change it???
    Where "oldshortname" is your old user name and "newshortname" is the user name you want to change it to. Keep in mind that both oldshortname and newshortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters or numbers.
    And, Padgreen has an excellent point -- how do we do this change process if our Old Shortname is Shortname??  How can we type "shortname" for the "oldshortname" if our shortname is not all lowercase??
    etresoft -- are you around??
    Or someone else?  Thanks!!
    (the only thing I can even think of as a problem is when I copy files/folders over to my Macbook - it sometimes makes "nobody" the owner of the file/folder and I find out when I try to edit or move the file. I can usually just change the owner and everything is fine.  I don't know if this is related or not.)

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428 states:
    Select the Home folder with the short name you want to change, and rename it just like you would rename any folder. Keep in mind that the shortname must be all lowercase, with no spaces, and only contain letters.

  • Best practice "changing several related objects via BDT" (Business Data Toolset) / Mehrere verbundene Objekte per BDT ändern

    Hallo,
    I want to start a
    discussion, to find a best practice method to change several related master
    data objects via BDT. At the moment we are faced with miscellaneous requirements,
    where we have a master data object which uses BDT framework for maintenance (in
    our case an insured objects). While changing or creating the insured objects a
    several related objects e.g. Business Partner should also be changed or
    created. So am searching for a best practices approach how to implement such a
    solution.
    One Idea was to so call a
    report via SUBMIT AND RETURN in Event DSAVC or DSAVE. Unfortunately this implementation
    method has only poor options to handle errors. Second it is also hard to keep LUW
    together.
    Another idea is to call an additional
    BDT instance in the DCHCK-event via FM BDT_INSTANCE_SELECT and the parameters
    iv_xpush_classic = ‘X’ and iv_xpop_classic = ‘X’. At this time we didn’t get
    this solution working correctly, because there is always something missing
    (e.g. global memory is not transferred correctly between the two BDT instances).
    So hopefully you can report
    about your implementations to find a best practice approach for facing such
    requirements.
    Hallo
    ich möchte an der Stelle eine Diskussion starten um einen Best Practice
    Ansatz zu finden, der eine BDT Implementierung/Erweiterung beschreibt, bei der
    verschiedene abhängige BDT-Objekte geändert werden. Momentan treffen bei uns
    mehrere Anforderungen an, bei deinen Änderungen eines BDT Objektes an ein
    anderes BDT Objekte vererbt werden sollen. Sprich es sollen weitere Objekte geänderte
    werden, wenn ein Objekt (in unserem Fall ein Versicherungsvertrag) angelegt
    oder geändert wird (zum Beispiel ein Geschäftspartner)
    Die erste unserer Ideen war es, im Zeitpunkt DSAVC oder DSAVE einen
    Report per SUBMIT AND RETURN aufzurufen. Dieser sollte dann die abhängigen Änderungen
    durchführen. Allerdings gibt es hier Probleme mit der Fehlerbehandlung, da
    diese asynchrone stattfinden muss. Weiterhin ist es auch schwer die Konsistenz der
    LUW zu garantieren.
    Ein anderer Ansatz den wir verfolgt hatten, war im Zeitpunkt
    DCHCK per FuBA BDT_INSTANCE_SELECT und den Parameter iv_xpush_classic = ‘X’ and
    iv_xpop_classic = ‘X’ eine neue BDT Instanz zu erzeugen. Leider konnten wir diese
    Lösung nicht endgültig zum Laufen bekommen, da es immer Probleme beim
    Übertragen der globalen Speicher der einzelnen BDT Instanzen gab.
    Ich hoffe Ihr könnt hier eure Implementierungen kurz beschreiben, dass wir
    eine Best Practice Ansatz für das Thema finden können

  • Best Practice - Changing description for Org Unit/Position or creating new?

    Hello Freinds,
    I just want to know from your experience what's normally practiced in your implementations for OM :-
    For scenarios where there is a need to change the description of a particular org unit or position, do u
    1. just change the description effective a particular date (to maintain history) or
    2. put an end date to those objects and create new ones ?
    Solution 1 is quick and easy, but in IT0001 the description displayed is as on start date of that infotype which is normally a date prior to the change in desc of those objects. As a result this infotype keeps displaying old description.
    Is there any way to change this display to show the current description instead of the description as on start date of this infotype ???
    Solution 2 calls for a lot of related activities, say if i create a new org unit and delemit the old one - then i have to move all the sub org units and positions into this new one ... which is quite time consuming and doesn't really seem practical.
    How do u manage such scenarios ?
    Thanks
    Allen

    We use option #1, although I am not sure this is best practice.  Using option 1 for positions makes it challenging when it comes to reporting on length of time in position.  We frequently have the scenario where a person is reorged not because they applied for another position, but just because the big wigs want to move around the chess pieces.  In these cases we simply modify the position attributes and then run a PA action.  Then if you run a query and use the standard delivered Length of time in position field, it appears as if the person has been in the same position for years (which they have), but their position has been retitled, re-graded, and re-orged numerous times.  This makes it very difficult to get to an employee's length of time in their role.
    This is a great discussion question I hope more people respond with what they do and why.

  • Best practice to create users - Hybrid scenario

    I would like to know what is the best practice for creating new users in a Hybrid scenario with all mailboxes hosted and no mailboxes on-premise.
    Currently when creating a new user we go to our local EMC and create a 'New Remote Mailbox'.  This creates the mailbox in Office365 and the local user account in one wizard.
    After the new user is created we have to manually add the user to the correct distribution groups, and security groups.
    We would like a way to create new users using a template which already has the correct distribution groups and security groups.  This is how we did it prior to setting up the Hyrbrid scenario.
    Is this possible?  Can we create a user from a template and have the mailbox created in Office365 at the same time?  We do not wish to create the mailbox locally then migrate it.

    Thanks for the response DJStatik.  I think this tool might be useful for creating users in bulk, however we are looking for a user template in the traditional sense.
    Occasionally we have a new user and (prior to O365) would 'copy' the template user to ensure correct groups etc.
    We have tried making users from the existing template we have, but in order to create the mailbox in O365, you need to 'mail enable' the user.  We have noticed that doing this process causes issues with Autodiscover for that particular user.
    To avoid the autodiscover issue, we have found it best to create the user and the mailbox in the same wizard - hence our new process that we would like a template.

  • On best practices for minimizing user impact for db/dw migrations

    Hi Everybody!
    Our department will be undertaking the migration of our ODS and Datawarehouse to Oracle 10g in the coming months and I wanted to query this group in anticipation for any good tips, DOs and DON'Ts and best practices that you might want to share with the group on how to minimize user impact, especially when some of the queries that different departments use have no known author and would need to be migrated to a different database dialect. Our organization is a large one and therefore efficacy in communicating the benefits of our project and handling a large number of user questions will be key items in our conversion plan.
    Thanks a lot to all those who can contribute to this thread, hopefully it will become a good way to record the expertise of this group's members on this very specific project category.
    -Ignacio

    BTW it is not clear from WHAT you want to migrate? Other DB or simply other Oracle version?
    OK anyway speaking about Data migration strategy there is at least one valueable article
    http://www.dulcian.com/papers/The%20Complete%20Data%20Migration%20Methodology.html
    Speking about technical execution you can look at my article Data migration from old to new application: an experience at http://www.gplivna.eu/papers/legacy_app_migration.htm
    None of them focuse on datawarehouse though.

    What is the best practices for the number of users operating in Primavera Contract Manager? We currently have v13.0.3.0

    There are no real limits to the number of users working in PCM, but your server(s) must be sized correctly to work effectively.  I've seen PCM instances with hundreds of users.  Sizing requirements is typically included with your installation materials; otherwise you may want to look at the knowledgebase for this document.
