Best Practice : how 2 fetch tables, views, ... names and schema
hi,
I am looking for the best practice about getting the catalog of a database.
I have seen that I can make some select in system-tables(or views) such as DBA_TABLES and DBA_VIEWS, or DBA_CATALOG, but is that the best way to grab thses informations ?
(I ask this question because It seems a strange way to me to get the table names using a simple select, but getting column info using a specialized function, OCIDescribeAny(). this does not look like a coherent API...)
thanks for your advice
cd
in the same idea, why use OCIDescribeAny instead of doing an appropriate select in DBA_TAB_COLUMNS ?

How to know database name and schema name
Hi ,
Once after logging in the database, how is it possible to know the current database and schema which we r using? Is there any system table where we can get the database names and schema names?
please help me out.itz urgent.
Regards,
SravanProbably not.
If the database name is the name of the current database, it would be essentially redundant. If the database name is the name of some other database, in order to get the names of all the tables in the specified schema, you could create a database link to the remote system (which assumes you have a login and password to the remote database with appropriate privileges, that the database server's tnsnames.ora file has an entry for the remote database, etc) and query the remote data dictionary tables. Even if you could do that, however, you could not dynamically create triggers on the remote database since DDL over a database link.
In theory, you could also load an appropriate JDBC driver into the database and write a Java stored procedure that would connect to the remote database (again, with an appropriate user name & password, host name, and port number) and issue DDL against that remote database. I have a hard time believing, however, that this would be a particularly beneficial approach. It would be easier just to put the appropriate code into each database that needs triggers generated or to have a separate Java application that generates triggers for a number of different databases.

How to know database name and schema name by providing package name?
Hi,
Could someonw will help me to get database name and schema name by providing package name ?
I have used the query : select * from all_objects where object_name='Package_name'; but it simply returns schema name where as i need DB name and username.
--Prajaktabut it simply returns schema name where as i need DB name and username.
i want to retrive the DB name for package name
Based on your questions, I wonder if you are used to working in SQL Server? (The server, database, and schema are part of the 4-part name of an object, independent of any user.)
In SQL Server, schema and username are two separate physical concepts. "Schema" is purely logical in Oracle: a user which owns objects is often called a "schema".
In Oracle, "database" is roughly equivalent to the SQL Server concept "server" (what you log in to). It is not part of the naming path to a specific object (unless there is a database link involved, but there is no indication that's what you have here). In Oracle you connect to an Instance (or Service) and people often call this the "database", but there is a fine semantic distinction there (separate topic).
Once connected in Oracle, you fully-qualify an object by only a 2-part owner and object name (possibly 3-part if a database link is involved user.object@link).
12c added another wrinkle to all of this, but I'll assume this question was more basic than that, because you likely would have mentioned if this was a 12c question. -
Best Practice to fetch SQL Server data and Insert into Oracle Tables
Hello,
I want to read sqlserver data everry half an hour and write into oracle tables ( in two different databases). What is the best practice for doing this?
We do not have any database dblinks from oracle to sqlserver and vice versa.
Any help is highly appreciable?
ThanksWell, that's easy:
use a TimerTask to do the following every half an hour:
- open a connection to sql server
- open two connections to the oracle databases
- for each row you read from the sql server, do the inserts into the oracle databases
- commit
- close all connections -
We are evaluating the use of iPod touch devices to record best practice videos on our manufacturing floor and to post to an internal Moodle web site. How can you upload a video from the iPod touch to a site other than YouTube? The Moodle upload interface is expecting a file selection dialog box like windows or OSX. I do not want to have to go through an intermediary step of messing with a pc.
Thanks! It should be around 7 and a half gigs. In iTunes, across the bottom there should be a bar that show how much storage is being used and by what. (music, movies, apps, etc.) To make music take up less room, you can check the box to make it convert the music to 128kbps AAC. This lowers the quality, but with most earbuds and speakers, you can't even tell the difference.
The iPod touch has parental controls built in. You'll find them in Settings. I think they only work for enabling/disabling Safari, Mail, YouTube, and App Store. Here's an app that does more: http://www.mobicip.com/online_safety/ipod_touch -

Best practices in Queue table maintenance
Hi Fellow AQ Users,
I am looking to hear from the community about best practices in queue table maintenance.
I have been mining through metalink about various Oracle recommendations and putting
together a set of recommendations as a starting point for my DBAs.
I am looking to answer questions like these --
How often (in relation to messaging load) would you coalesce and rebuild the indexes?
How often would you rebuild the table itself to get rid of the high water mark issues ?
and what procedure would you use to do that?
Would really love to learn from your experiences in this area. We are using 9.2.0.7
64 bit DB and have plans to go to 10g over the next year. So, I am looking at 9i related
stuff and then 10g.
Thanks
VijayHello,
In general you coalesce once per day ideally during a quiet time to avoid ORA-54 errors as per <Note:271855.1>. Some customers do it more often than that but once per day is a good starting point.
In terms of shrinking the queue tables you can use the procedure in <Note:304522.1> with a null 3rd parameter. This is an offline procedure so you could only run it during a maintenance window. In 10.2 onwards you can dynamically shrink the queue table and IOTS. Again it depends on exactly what you are doing with your queue tables how often you might need to do this.
Thanks

Hi Gurus,
Are GT_ , GS_ , LT_ , LS_ --- the Best practices in Internal table naming convention ????
I have seen this naming convetions adhered in standard programs .
What each one of the below signify
GT_ , GS_ , LT_ , LS_ ???????

ABAP TechieHello
I use the following naming conventions:
- G = global variable
- L = local variable
- T = internal table
- S = structure
- D = field
That's how the combinations look like:
- GT_ITAB = global itab
- GS_STRUC = global structure
- GD_FIELD = global field
- LT_ITAB = local itab
- LS_STRUC = local structure
- LD_FIELD = local field
Function module parameters have to stick to the following rules:
- I = importing
- E = exporting
- [C = changing -> never used]
- IT_ITAB = imported table type (itab)
- IS_STRUC = imported structure
- ID_FIELD = imported field
- ET_ITAB = exported table type (itab)
- ES_STRUC = exported structure
- ED_FIELD = exported field
Depending on their semantics TABLES parameters look like:
- IT_ITAB = imported data
- ET_ITAB = exported data
- XT_ITAB = changing data (import & export)
Here are the conventions for FORM routine parameters:
- UT_ITAB = using itab (data are usually treated like constants; no changes will be transfer - although possible - to the calling program)
- CT_ITAB = changing itab (if it is semantically an exporting itab then one of the very
first statements in the routine is: REFRESH ct_itab. )
- US_STRUCT
- UD_FIELD
- CS_STRUCT
- CS_FIELD
Conventions for class/interface parameters:
- IT_ITAB = importing table type
- IS_STRUC = importing structure
- ID_FIELD = importing field
- ET_ITAB = exporting table type
- ES_STRUC = exporting structure
- ED_FIELD = exporting field
- RT_ITAB = returning table type
- RS_STRUC = returning structure
- RD_FIELD = returning field
Conventions for class/interface attributes:
- MT_ITAB = table type
- MS_STRUC = structure
- MD_FIELD = field
- MC_CONST = constant
<b>Question</b>: Are there any advantages of such elaborated naming conventions?
My answer to this question is: Yes, definitively.
I believe that the advantage of semantically differentiating TABLES parameters of function modules is quite obvious:
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_BAD_NAMING'
TABLES
itab1 = ...
itab2 = ...
itab3 = ... .
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_GOOD_NAMING'
TABLES
it_itab1 = ...
et_itab2 = ...
xt_itab3 = ... .
I also believe that my naming conventions clearly enhance <b>readability </b>and <b>maintainability </b>of my programs.

HELP remembering VIEW names and USAGE - any tips?
Hi
Ive got my 1Z0-031 exam comming up this friday and after each topic section self review i do, im finding that i cant answer the questions which quiz me on the use of either V$ and regular DD views.
Remembering the actual names will be OK, but then i strugle trying to remember within WHICH contexts they are be used. If it were to ask a definition of a particular view i would be OK with that also, but i know the exam will not be like that...and from practice questions, there are quite a few questions on views within each section!!
For example, Which VIEW could you use to query users with the ALTER ANY ROLE privilege?
Now i know the answer is DBA_SYS_PRIVS, but from remembering the defintion of this view, it did not help me - in that I find it hard to relate the VIEW name and its usage in conjunction with the definition...(DEF: DBA_SYS_PRIVS - lists SYSTEM PRIVILEGES granted to USERS and ROLES)
Any tips or adivce would be really appriciated! :)
Thanks again!

Well.... you need to find your own "method" but some tips that might help:
- since you dont have much time, write down the names of the views related to this exam (narrow down the number of views) and try to create some structure from there
- try to think in objects: tables, columns, views, synonyms and indexes. Tablespaces, data files, segments and extents. Users, privileges and roles.
- use the views and learn from it; do describe on them, and select from them to see what info each view delivers
- dba/all/user views ends very often with an s, v$ does not (dba_tablespaces and v$tablespace)
- v$ has dynamic performance/"run-time" info e.g. processes, sessions, sql, statistics, memory, etc. and you can use some fixed tables/views already when the instance is in nomount (v$system_parameter, v$session, ...) or mount (v$controlfile, v$datafile, v$log, ...).
Hth,
Fredrik
btw, I suck at remembering such details, I use the describe command and know where to find the docs ;-)

Sql developer not showing table/view names
I just set up a new machine, the database settings are same as in the old machine. But I cannot see the table/view names when expending the "+" sign before Tables or Views. When using "select * from tab", the result of all tables/views returns correctly. Is there any other settings I missed?
I'm using Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, and Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.5.The same issue exists in 2.1.1.64.39
All of a sudden: list of tables empty, views still viewable, tables are still there though.

Best practice how to retrieve & update data w/o any jsf-lifecycle-overhead
I have a request scoped jsf managed bean called "ManagedBean". This bean has a method annotated with "@PostConstruct" that retrieves data from a database. The data is shown in a jsp "showAndEditData.jsp" in <h:inputText /> components - so the data is editable.
The workflow is as follows:
First, when navigating to "showAndEditData.jsp", the ManagedBean is created, the "@PostConstruct"-method is invoked, and the data retrieved from the database is shown to the user.
Second, the user changes the data.
Third, the user presses the submit button, the ManagedBean is created again, the "@PostConstruct"-method is invoked again, and the data is retrieved from the database again. Then the data is overridden by the changes the user made and passed to the business-tier (where it will be saved to the database).
Every step that i marked with "*again*" is completely unneccessary and a huge overhead.
Is there a way to prevent these unneccessary steps.
Or asking in other words: Is there a best practice how to retrieve and update data efficently and without any overhead using JSF?
I do not want to use session scoped managed beans, because this would be a huge overhead as well. The first "again" is neccessary, because after successfull validation, you need new object in request to store the submitted value.
I agree to the second and third, really unneccessary and does not make sense.
Additionally I think its bad practice putting data in session beansTotal agree, its a disadvantage of JSF that we often must use session.
Think there is also an bigger problem with this.
Dont know how your apps are working, my apps start an new database transaction per commit on every new request.
So in this case, if you do an second query on postback, which uses an different database transaction, it could get different data as for the inital request.
But user did his changes <b>accordingly</b> to values of the first snapshot during the inital request.
If these values would be queried again on postback, and they have been changed meanwhile, it becomes inconsistent, because values of snapshot two, do not fit to user input.
In my opionion zebhed has posted an major mistake in JSF.
Dont now, where to store the data, perhaps page scope could solve this.
Not very knowledge of that section, but still ask myself, if this data perhaps could be stored in the components and on an postback the data are rendered from components + submittedvalues instead of model. -
Best practices to configure files to display and play in order?
I'm looking for best practices to get saved recordings (songs and business trainings) on my PC correctly configured so they will show up correctly (artist, song title, track number) and play incorrect order.
I have lots of MP3 files (and other formats) on my PC but when i transfer them to iTunes and sync to iPod they don't play in correct order or show up as unknown artist (and other issues).
I typically have them in a folder by artist name then folder with name of course or album then each song begins with a number.
EXAMPLE: Eagles (folder) - Hotel California (folder) - 1.HotelCalifornia.mp3, 2.NewKidInTown.mp3, etc etc.
I've also right-clicked and went into properties and add the track number, artist name, album name, contributing artist etc but it still comes up with these issues
--it's also very time-consuming to do this.
EXAMPLE: instead of it being track 1,2,3 etc it will be 1,10,11,2,21,3...
I've tried dragging them or copying them into the "automatically add" folder and also adding to library in iTunes.
Any help is much appreciated.Hi Narendra,
Oracle User and the FTP user are 2 different users.
I'm assuming you'll be reading the file from R12 through File Adapter and writing it to Bank using FTP Adapter.
Oracle User is able to login into R12, do some operations, submit some concurrent programs/requests based on responsibilities and generate the file to be transferred (like in my case it did by running a Concurrent Request). The file so generated should be placed at a location from where File Adapter can read it within the BPEL process. Now to read the file, the user that is used is a SOA server user (again different from R12 user). This is the same user that you use to login into your SOA server physical box. Hence to be able to read the file, your file should have appropriate privileges (we set that as 777) so that it can be read by the SOA process (using SOA user).
FTP user, on the other hand, is the user that allows connection to Bank FTP server. This has absolutely no connection with R12. Bank who hosts the FTP server must give you the FTP user details that you'll use inside your FTP JNDI Configuration on Weblogic. When you deploy and run your process (you don't deploy adapter), it picks up the connection details from FTP JNDI properties that you defined in weblogic.
Hence both the jusers can be different and I don't think any best practices are required or do exist for this.

How to suffix user name and password remote pc in shutdown /s command
Hi,
We can shutdown a remote pc using " shutdown /s /m \\ipaddress " command, only if password of remote pc is stored in windows credential manager.
But how to add user name and password when i execute the command for example : when we map a share folder on our pc we use below command with user name and password
"net use * \\ipaddress\share password /user:username "
can we give user name and password of remote pc while we give shutdown command to turn off a remote pc (without adding user name and password to windows credentials).
Thanks in advance..........Hello Jayanth kundar,
Based on my test, I can use the command shutdown /s /m \\10.157.21.77 to shutdown the remote computer when the have the same username and password.
Do you mean that you want to add user name and password when you want to shutdown the remote computer?
I can't find a user name and password in Windows Credential Manager, please share us a screenshot.

Query to find all the view name and their size in GB
Hi,
What is the query to find all the view name and their size in GB.I am aware of joining all_views and user_segments but this is not serving the purpose.is there any table i need to join to get the desired result
ThanksYou could of course be thinking of views as they are stored in other RDBMS' as some of them actually create the view as a table on the database with a copy of the data in it and maintain that data as the base tables are updated.
As already mentioned, Oracle just stores the SQL of the View and executes that SQL when the view is queried.
Alternatively, Oracle also has "materialized views" which are created as snapshots of the data and will have a size. This data is updated (refreshed) based on the parameters used when creating the materialized view which means that it will either be, commonly, when a commit is issued or when a refresh is explicitly requested (refresh on demand). -
How to change the name and description of a wim using DISM
With Imagex we could update the name and description of the wim with on easy command:
imagex /info img_file [img_number or
img_name] [new_name] [new_desc]
e.g.
imagex /info Win7Combined.WIM 1 "Win7(x86)" "Windows 7 x86"
Since the ImageX tool is deprecated in Windows 8 and has been replaced with DISM, can someone explain how to update the name and description with one easy command using DISM like we could with Imagex? It looks like this person had the same issue. Have you seen this
link
It talks about exporting an Index into a new WIM. Which, in a way, would be renaming it. It's really recreating it and you have to give it a name. But it seems to work.
