Best Practices in DB Consolidation using RAC
Dear all
I'm looking for recommendations on DB Consolidation using RAC.
I mean:
Assuming to have different serious production databases which availability is a serious requirement.
Which is best: to have different small RACs with one DB on each, or having a big RAC and put all the DB's into it.
- What is recommended
- What are limitations & issues
e.g:
- Supported DB version (assume we can force developers to support a certain version)
- Different Startup options (I heard this one for conslidation in an stand alone DB Server with multiple instances. Is it an issue for RAC architecture?)
- What are challenges and how to overcome
- When to have One RAC with multiple instances & when to have multiple RAC with one instance per RAC
- What DB's are better to be consolidated in one RAC, and when it is best to seperate them
And many other considerations that surely have'nt gone through my head :)
I need a comprehensive view and need some references.
looking forward to your kind replies
cheers
Mehdi Sarmadi
Hi Mehdi,
Which is best: to have different small RACs with one DB on each, or having a big RAC and put all the DB's into it.
It will be better to have DB for OLTP type application seperate than the DB for DSS type appllication. This way you'll have more control over their performance.
What is recommended
- What are limitations & issues
e.g:
- Supported DB version (assume we can force developers to support a certain version)
- Different Startup options (I heard this one for conslidation in an stand alone DB Server with multiple instances. Is it an issue for RAC architecture?)
As far as DB version is concerned 11gR1 is the latest version and is stable also. So it is always advisable to go with the latest stable version. This will make your support from Oracle last longer.
I didn't understand what u exactly meant by different startup options. But the startup options will remain same for RAC DB also as far as DB is cocerned.Only the additional task will be the Cluserware components startup and ASM instance (if used).
- What are challenges and how to overcome
- When to have One RAC with multiple instances & when to have multiple RAC with one instance per RAC
- What DB's are better to be consolidated in one RAC, and when it is best to seperate them
There are not any chalenges to overcome in RAC other than the pre-requistes required by it . For the requirements go through oracle docs.
Having one node RAC doesn't make much sense other than when u have only one server and u plan to add other ones later on.You'll be able to use RAC benefits with multiple instance only. How many instances u need is a matter of observation of the type of load your aplication will have.
For installtion docs of RAC go u can view the link below and choose appropriate option according to your OS:

Best practice for oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM
Did any one tried/installed Oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM and CRS ?
What is the best practice?
1. separate home for CRS, ASM and Oracle Database?
2. separate home for CRS and same home for ASM and Oracle Darabase?
we set up the test environment with separate CRS, ASM and Oracle database homes, but we have tons of issues with the listener, spfile and tnsnames.ora files. So, seeking advise from the gurus who implimeted/tested the same ?I am getting ready to install the 10gR2 database software (10gR2 Clusterware was just installed ) and I want to have a home for ASM and another for database as you suggest. I have been told that 10gR2 was to have a smaller set of binaries that can be used for the ASM home ... but I am not sure how I go about installing it. The first look at the installer does not seem to make it obvious...Is it a custom build option?

Best Practice for SOA-oc4j using more than 4 GB
Hi,
is there any best practice how to use the SOA container with more than 4GB?
Oracle ships only java with 32 Bits...If you need to modify the myRIO FPGA personality you have a few options.
The best option is to start with the myRIO FPGA sample project, add and remove components as needed and then build your bitfile. Any registers (LV FPGA controls / indicators) you don't modify will still work with the Advanced IO VIs and Express VIs. In order to use the new bitfile (FPGA Personality) you'll need to update the Open FPGA VI Reference in myRIO v1.1 Open.vi (LabVIEW 2013\vi.lib\myRIO\Common\Instrument Driver Framework\myRIO v1.0\myRIO v1.1 Open.vi).
After doing this any time you use a myRIO Express VI or Advanced IO VI it will use your custom bitfile. Any peripheral channels you've left in place will continue to work. Any channels you've removed will still show up in the VIs, but will not work (they will probably throw errors at runtime) and any new channels you added will not show up in the VIs. For new channels you'll need to use the FPGA Read / Write nodes to read and write the configuration and data register you created in the FPGA personality. These changes will persist on that computer until you change the Open FPGA VI Reference back to the original bitfile.
Let us know if you have questions about any of this.
Thanks!

Best Practices for creating PDFs using PLPDF?
Does anyone have any suggestions for Best Practices in making PDF files using PLPDF?
I have been using it for about a month now, and the best that I have come up with is to use MS Access to prototype the layout of a report. Once I have all the graphics areas and text areas lined up how I would want them, I then write PLSQL code to create a procedure which is called from an HTMLDB page. MS Access is handy in that it provides the XY coordinates for each text area and graphics area. It also provides the dimensions of the respective cells. So long as I call plpdf.Init('P', 'in', 'letter') at the beginning of the procedure, both my MS Access prototype and my plpdf code are both using inches - this makes the translation relatively easy.
Has anybody found anything else easier/better?
Regards,You can make it happen by creating a private connection for 40 users by capi script and when creating portlet select 2nd option in Users Logged in section. In this the portlet uses there own private connection every time user logs in.
So that it won't ask for password.
Another thing is there is an option of entering password or not in ASC in discoverer section, if your version 10.1.2.2. Let me know if you need more information

Best Practices for Team Collaboration using Adobe Captivate
With a team of 6 Instructional Designers, how can Adobe Captivate be approached where we can collaborate while producing e-learning material while maintaining a consistent look and feel of the e-learning we produce?
What are the best practices for a team of 6 IDs working and creating e-learning material in Captivate? Is there anything build-in that allows us to connect to the same libraries, templates, etc to share?
Please advise.
Thank you!
SusanneOnly some tips, never collaborated with someone else, being the solo teacher. You didn't mention which version you are using, what I write here is meant for CP7.
Be sure to prepare a theme and/or a template that will be used by everyone. A theme consists of master slides, object styles, skin editor. Master slides can have custom navigation shape buttons. In a template you can eventually also prepare different slides with placeholders, and eventually advanced actions etc. For CP6 and earlier that is the only way to reuse advanced actions, in Captivate 7 you can export shared actions that can be imported in any project for reuse.
A feature that few users know about are the external libraries. You can open the library of any project as an external library in another project. That is a good idea to store assets that you want to use in different projects: images, audio clips, video clips, eventually equations. The shared actions in a library can not (yet?) be used in another project however.
If you are on CP7 you have automatically the roundtripping with source Adobe Photoshop files and source Audition files, both from CC. That can also make collaboration lot easier if those assets are prepared in those applications. Will not expand on that, because I'm not sure you have the Creative Cloud applications.
Those are my two cents.

Best practices for building menus using resource bundles?
Greetings; I am curious to find out what the current best practices people are using to build menus/menu bars using resource bundles, specifically ListResourceBundle.
What I am trying to figure out is how best to write my Swing application so it does not need to know what menu items it needs to grab from the resource bundle.
The only idea I have come up with is this:
class MyBundle extends ListResourceBundle {
private Object[][] contents = {
{"menubar", { {"menu.file.item", "blah"}, ....} }
}Inside the GUI class:
Object[][] menubar = resourceBundle.getObject("menubar");I would then iterate over the menu bar items and build the menu. I would have to use a naming scheme and then parse appropriately to know when to start a new menu, when a submenu occurs, etc.
Is this the common practice, or does anyone know of a more clever way of doing this? I've searched various FAQs and googled about, but I have yet to come across any sort of tutorial or page that covers this.Anyone have any input on this? Am I close to the solution people are
using out in real production environments? -
Best Practices for multiple authors using single project?
We are having many issues, particularly with moving, renaming, and multiple check out warnings. We have a single project with many authors and it seems like RH is not designed to work that way. There is an article in the RH devnet-archive in an article entitled "Sharing RoboHelp Project Among Multiple Authors" that says"
"At first there may be the temptation to let every author work on every file in a project. This is certainly not a best practice. Regardless of source contraol, it is always best to designate certain authors as owning certain content-related sections, folders, or topics within a project -particulary at the folder level."
This statement, and our experience seems to indicate that RH is not a true CMS as we had envisioned. What are the best practices for this scenario to avoid stepping on each others toes and having problems with source control.I have moved this to the source control forum for the gurus there to answer.
Meantime I must admit I read that statement the same way as you first time. However, on rereading I think what the author is saying is not that what you want cannot be done, rather it is best practice to guide authors to work in discrete areas.
I will leave it to the author or another guru to give you a more complete answer.

Best practice for modelling rediects using the threat modelling tool
I'm in the process of modelling systems using the threat modelling tool.
There services in question do a lot of redirecting and handing off to one another on the client side, including things like ACS and identify providers.
If Web App A redirects to Web App B what is the best way to draw this?
1) App A (process) > HTTPs redirect > browser > request > App B (process) or
2) Can I just model it as HTTPS from A to B?
Obviously 2 simplifies diagrams hugely , but does that then exclude a range of potential threats or does the tool cater for this implicitly?Storing documents outside the web root and using
<cfcontent> to push their contents to the users is the most
secure method.
Putting the documents in a subdirectory of the web root and
securing that directory with an Application.cfm will only protect
.cfm and .cfc files (as that's the only time that CF is involved in
the request). That is, unless you configure CF to handle every
request.
The virtual directory is no safer than putting the documents
in a subdirectory. The links to your documents are still going to
look like:
http://www.mysite.com/virtualdirectory/myfile.pdf
Users won't need to log in to access these documents.
<cfcontent> or configuring CF to handle every request
is the only way to ensure users have to log in before accessing
non-CF files. Unless you want to use web-server
authentication. -
Best practice when developing APEX apps and using a SVN repository
Hi experts,
I wanted to get your opinion on best practice regarding how to use SVN and APEX combined.
The idea is basically how to structure and how to save APEX apps the best way in a repository.
I am currently working with a custom SVN structure, not using the default TRUNC/TAGS one : every app has a folder , under every app folder i have PAge number folders, and for each page reports, regions and global objects separated.
This helps me because its more readable then saving the whole page export, its good for small changes and i have a clear overview of every bit and piece.
What is everybody else using or is there a best practice to follow here that i dont know?
Kind regards,
Alex@tomaugerdotcom
Something like this might help: https://testflightapp.com/
Concevably, you could roll your own internal service if that particular one doesn't suit you. (I don't have any knowledge about how they are doing it, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out since Apple's constraining rules would only allow a few possibilities.)
USB app install and debugging isn't supported on iOS. You have to use wireless.
Another option specifically for multi-touch dev/testing, is to use an Android device. -
Migration Best Practice When Using an Auth Source
Hi,
I'm looking for some advice on migration best practices or more specifically, how to choose whether to import/export groups and users or to let the auth source do a sync to bring users and groups into each environment.
One of our customers is using an LDAP auth source to synchronize users and groups. I'm trying to help them do a migration from a development environment to a test environment. I'd like to export/import security on each object as I migrate it, but does this mean I have to export/import the groups on each object's ACLs before I export/import each object? What about users? I'd like to leave users and groups out of the PTE files and just export/import the auth source and let it run in each environment. But I'm afraid the UUIDs for the newly created groups will be different and they won't match up with object ACLs any more, causing all the objects to lose their security settings.
If anyone has done this before, any suggestions about best practices and gotchas when using the migration wizard in conjunction with an auth source would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Chris Bucchere
Bucchere Development Group
[email protected]
http://www.bucchere.comThe best practice here would be to migrate only the auth source through the migration wizard, and then do an LDAP sync on the new system to pull in the users and groups. The migration wizard will then just "do the right thing" in matching up the users and groups on the ACLs of objects between the two systems.
Users and groups are actually a special case during migration -- they are resolved first by UUID, but if that is not found, then a user with the same auth source UUID and unique auth name is also treated as a match. Since you are importing from the same LDAP auth source, the unique auth name for the user/group should be the same on both systems. The auth source's UUID will also match on the two systems, since you just migrated that over using the migration wizard. -
Best practice for the use of reserved words
Hi,
What is the best practice to observe for using reserved words as column names.
For example if I insisted on using the word comment for a column name by doing the following:
CREATE TABLE ...
"COMMENT" VARCHAR2(4000),
What impact down the track could I expect and what problems should I be aware of when doing something like this?
Thank You

Whatever benefits you may get from naming the column COMMENT rather than, say, CMNT or EMP_COMMENT (if the table is called EMP) will be insignificant compared to the extra debugging you will certainly need. -
Best practice for component layout?
Hi,can people tell me their views on best practice in this area, using JSF.
Eg, say I want this:
LabelSml InputField
LabelLarge InputField... ie 2 labels, 2 fields, vertically alligned, and with some space between the label and the field.
and this one:
Field Field... ie 2 fields with a lot of space between them.
Finally, are there any examples on the web of UIs with many discrete fields on them (as opposed to logon/helloWorld and matrix data control), where I can look at how the design has been done.
MarcI don't know if our solution is a best practice. We are not using the label property of input components because the alignment does not satisfy then. Instead we are using a <h:panelGrid> and nest <ui:label> and <ui:textField> (Studio Creator components) components in it. Multiple components in one cell are surrounded with a nested layout or grid panel. The number of columns is set by the attribute "columns" and width is controlled by the attribute "columnClasses". Best practice on integration message augmentation via user exit or rfc call
I am looking for documentation that would provide best practices on whether to use user exits to augment the data on an IDOC or to forward the standard SAP produced IDOC to PI where rfc calls are made to augment the data as required for the specific target system.
I am sure there are pros and cons for both solutions, but I am hesitant to use user exits since we now have moved the knowledge of what a target system wants from the integration layer to the source layer. If a second target system comes along in the future, the user exit becomes more complicated with additional target specific requirements.
Any links to best practice documentation on this subject is greatly appreciated.
Edited by: Sean Sweeney on Oct 15, 2009 6:59 PMHi Steve,
Might be trying for solution for a long time, If i understood your question clear let me clarify you few points.
You are trying to access the bex query which is designed with the exit's in the background based on the logic and trying to call the entire dimensions and key-figures in a single connection. Then you are trying to map those data in the charts.
Steve, try to make more connections based upon the logic and split them. use the same query but split them by sales per customer group, sales per day, sales per week by making three different connections and try. You can merge the prompts from all connections.
Hope this Helps!!!
Sorry if i misunderstood your question.

Best practice for standard security role
Hi, I'd like to know which is the best practice for standard role use, some people tell me that a standard role should never be used, that a copy must be made and assign the users to the copy, but then, why should SAP bother creating the standard role?
They are provided as a template for you, and you can copy them into a different namespace and make changes there before generating the profiles and authorizations.
Why you should use a copy of them is because SAP will also update them sometimes. If transactions change in the standard menues with SP's and upgrades, then you will find them in transaction SU25.
If you do a search on "standard AND roles" in the SDN then you will also find more detailed infos and opinions on the use of them.
Cheers,
Julius
