Best print-to-pdf settings for news articles

Hello, can anyone recommend appropriate settings to use for print to pdf of newspaper articles from a web browser? I archive articles from news sites as pdfs, which I then later use for both reading on pcs and portable devices and as print-outs. Specifically, what pdf standard is best to use in this case? I'm asking mainly because text in the pdfs I've made so far is much less smooth and difficult to read than I thought it would be when viewing on pc, even with acrobat 10 smoothing turned on. It makes the right edge of letters appear to be cut off. Mind you, i'm looking at the pdf at 86% (fit to height); when I zoom to 100%, the text becomes smooth again. And the pdfs also look very sharp on my portable devices. My screen is 1920x1080.
Cheers

If it is a graphic, then a higher resolution would be useful. You should be able to tell if it is a graphic by zooming out and checking the pixels. If you are capturing the fonts, then they should look about the same at any zoom. You might want to be sure the fonts are embedded. Just as a check on some of the issues, try the press or print settings to see if things improve. The other option is to go back and modify the settings to a custom form, but good to start with one that look reasonable first -- or at least compare some of the settings files. There are other issues of the print resolution (the default 1200 dpi is typically a lot more than you need).

  • How to set tagged pdf settings for batch process

Framemaker doesn't allow me to set tagged pdf settings without opening a file (i.e. *.mif/*.fm/*.book).We are using .MIF files to generate PDF in an automated process.( .MIF files will be sent to FrameMaker as a batch file using DZBATCHER then it it uses distiller to produce the PDF).
How can I set tagged PDF settings for this kind of operation?

Tagged PDF info is a document level property, i.e. you need to define it in the MIF. Check your MIF manual for: <DPDFStructure and <DPDFStructureDefined statements.
Note: If you're using any FM version earlier that FM9 and not the FrameServer version, please read your EULA very carefully (Section 2.2 - 2.4) concerning automated creation of PDF files. With FM9, the restriction apparently has been loosened to only how the process is intiated (Section 2.3).
Copies of the EULAs can be seen here: http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/

  • Where is best place to make settings for printing on 8"x10" paper?

Does PS interpolate (scale?) my final print image when I set the size paper I'm printing to? I would like to avoid that.
I want to combine several photos into a single image and print on 8"x10" paper w. 1/2" borders. Where is the best place to make these settings in CS6?
Do I set my canvas dimensions in the "New File" dialogue box to Width: 7 inches and Height: 9; and then choose 8 x 10 paper size when printing, which leaves 1" for borders?  Or do I go to "Image Size" and make the settings there? Or in the Print Dialogue box?  Thanks.

I would suggest the Print Dialog. Here your printer would be set to 8 x10 paper (borderless),but in the print dialog under "Scaled Print Size",you would set the print size you want without resampling.
At least that's what I would do for a single project. Start by checking "Scale to fit media" so that you start with the entire image.
Keep "centered" checked. Then uncheck "Scale to fit Media" and dial in your settings.

  • PDF settings for unknown printing conditions

I create material such as flyers, that are sent out to various recipients as PDF. They print these PDFs on whatever printer they have access to, mostly good quality office lasers, but also inkjets; none of these PDFs are headed for offset press.
Now I want to ensure reasonably good colour fidelity under these uncertain conditions. I let ID output RGB composite in the sRGB colour space, the document is created in RGB, too. By using sRGB and leaving the CMYK conversion to the printer, I'm hoping to get the least surprises and testing in my office and with printers in the neighbourhood seems to confirm that.
Does that sound like a good strategy?

Actually, forcing all content to sRGB on PDF export is an exceptionally bad idea. Our strongest recommendation at Adobe is to use the PDF/X-4 PDF export settings such that all content is appropriately color managed, RGB content isn't prematurely converted to CMYK, and transparency is maintained as “live.” When you print from Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat versions 9 or greater, output from these PDF/X-4 files will be optimal compared to the mess you would have from a file in which all objects are forced to sRGB.
Converting all content to sRGB on PDF export kills the available gamut for RGB imagery that is natively Adobe RGB or any other wide gamut RGB space. It also leads to your black and gray text and vector objects being converted to an RGB gray (R=G=B) which often will print out as rich black, i.e., something other than CMYK=(0,0,0,k). Pure CMYK cyan, magenta, and yellow will print polluted. And you also find transparency flattening artifacts that occur due to use of an RGB transparency blending space.
By the way, in terms of “desktop printers,” except for photo printers which often have a few extra colorants, all printers are basically CMYK. For PostScript printers, printing PDF files from Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat yields CMYK only to those printers when default settings are used; RGB, LAB, and spot color content is appropriately converted to the target CMYK color space using Adobe's ICC-based color managment with profiles found in the PDF file. For non-PostScript devices that have drivers that only understand RGB, content is converted to RGB by Reader/Acrobat likewise using the profiles provided.
Bottom line is that you shouldn't prematurely convert any color spaces whether to RGB or CMYK!

  • PDF Settings For Industrial Touchscreen

    Hi,
I am creating an instruction manual and parts manual to be used on an industrial touch screen. OS is  Windows XP
We are using bookmarks on the left hand side and want the user to be able to use the bookmarks and have a page displayed.
Screen sizes on the industrial machine vary from machine to machine.
    Questions:
    best display settings to use
    image settings
    pdf file size
Anything else that will make the user's experience pleasant.
    Thanks much,
    Doreen

    Hi Doreen,
    In my humble opinion :
    Best display settings to use:
These are generally controlled by the workstation, but for Acrobat it is best to use large, bold type for any text, images that are sized to the most common size monitor you will be using (if you make images very large, they will appear pixilated and distorted when Acrobat has to scale it down to fit on a small screen), and feel free to use more pages than if you had to print them
    Image settings:
You sort of have to take a "lowest common denominator" approach here. You don't really need more than 72dpi of resolution for an image—at the correct size for the document. I also recommend RGB as the color mode.
    PDF file size:
Smaller is usually better, and the PDF optimizer (File: Save as other: Reduced Size PDF) will help to shrink your PDF's file size. Although, you needn't worry too much, as the files will be sitting on the system. If they were served via a web server to a browser, then the size is much more an issue.
Likely others may weigh in on this forum post as well?
Let us know how it goes!

  • Best rgb and gamma settings for external monitor with mountain lion

    Hi,
I'm using an LG LED 22 inch monitor with my MBP mid 2010 via minidisplay to hdmi. on OS X side the settings have been default. On the LED side the settings , if set to preset RGB it tends to fade the whites a lot. when i set to user definied and let the preset rgb be at it is, the colors are quote decent. currently they are on R 50, G 58 and B 59 and Gamma 1. Which is the best RGB and Gamma value for OS X Mountain Lion?

    Welcome to the forum.
First off, you need to go and buy a hardware monitor calibrator, such as an OptixXR or similar. This will build a custom monitor profile for your specific screen. Without this starting point you can forget ANY attempt at accurate colour matching.
Never (and I mean never) use a working space such as sRGB or Adobe98 as your monitor profile, that's not what they are designed for. Working spaces control what colours are possible in the image, monitor profiles control how those colours are shown on screen. Aperture uses it's own working space so you don't have to worry about that too much.
To answer the rest far too briefly, I'd suggest setting the proofing profile to sRGB and of course use sRGB for the export preset. The gamma setting you will have to adjust depending on how dark the Lightjet prints look compared to your screen. You will have to do test-strips to start with.
Your images looking crap on flickr on Windows machines is partly because Windows web browsers generally do NO colour correction, and only partly to do with the different gamma.

  • Recently bought new printer. All works fine with one OSX user. However, cannot print anything on other OSX user, including cannot print Adobe PDFs or to new printer. Puzzling!

    computer = Mac PowerPC G5
    OS = 10.4.11
    Adobe Acrobat 7
    HP laserjet M1212nf
I recently bought a new HP printer. I was on an admin user when I installed it. All works fine with this admin account/user. I can print to the HP, print to Adobe PDFs.
However, when I then go over to another user account, I cannot print *anything*. I cannot print to Adobe PDF, cannot print to the new HP. If I try to print an excel file, it says "cannot communicate with the printer" along with some useless suggestions. If I try to print a page on FireFox, nothing happens. That is, sure I get the usual dialog box, click the appropriate choice of printer, click the number of copies, then click the OK button ... and nothing happens. No pdf process is started. Nothing is sent to the HP printer.
The fact that both printer options are not working suggests it is some kind of OS problem, not specific to either printer "device".
    Any assistance is appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit leery of trying that. I would think that if the driver was not installed, then none of my users could use the printer. However, both admin users can use the new printer. The list of available printers is:
    Adobe PDF 7.0
    New HP Printer
I also used to have Old HP Printer, which I  removed. Before, Users A, B and C could use both the Adobe PDF and the Old HP printers. Then, after I added the New HP Printer, it showed up in the list of printers for all three users. However, after I added the new printer, only the two admin accounts, users A and C, can actually print anything. Both users A and C can use the Adobe PDF printer AND the New HP Printer. But I get error messages with user B, for both the Adobe PDF printer and the New HP Printer.

  • Best PE7.0 export settings for Youtube HD, Vimeo or Smugmug?

    Hi all,
I'm really new to video editing and I can't find any recommendations on the best Premiere Elements 7 export settings for Youtube HD, Vimeo or Smugmug. It seems like most of them want you to upload in 1280x720.
My original source is 1920x1080 30p AVCHD from a Canon HF100. Obviously, I would like to keep it at the same frame rate. There doesn't appear to be a preset in PE7 (or a way at all) to output 1280x720 30 into an MPEG container with H.264 encoding. When I go into the advanced properties of a preset like "H.264 1920x1080i 30" or "MPEG2 1920x1080i 30" and choose 1280x720, I no longer have an option for 29.97 fps - the only options are 23.976 or 24 fps. It seems bad to change this, right?
I see the preset for "HD 720p 30" which appears to be MPEG encoding of the video stream instead of H.264. This seemed to work OK, but I wasn't sure about it, because when I choose it I see in the description a line that says TV Standard: NTSC. A number of web sites indicate that H.264 is preferred, but I don't really understand why.
I also found a way to do H.264 in a Quicktime container. This seemed a little suboptimal because you can't do variable bitrate. When I unselected the "select bitrate" checkbox, it seemed like a quality of 50 yielded a .mov file with a bit rate of 2.87Mb/s, and a quality of 100 yielded a .mov file with a bit rate of 26Mb/s. It is confusing to me how the quality setting affects the bitrate on the quicktime containers.
I'm leaning towards using the "HD 720p 30" preset and working with the bit rate choices, but am open to comments. What do others think?
And on a related question - assuming we choose the "HD 720p 30" preset as a starting point, given the 1GB file restriction at Youtube, it seems to make sense to choose a bitrate that allows both good quality and reasonable file size. I don't know much about whether VBR 1 pass, 2 pass or CBR would be best for this kind of online HD video. Google is a little unhelpful here: http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=132461
This page (http://webvideotechniques.com/123/bigger-and-better-encoding-for-youtube-hd) seems to indicate aiming for a bitrate of 8Mbps with a minimum of 4Mbps, including 2 pass VBR.
So, basically, I'm confused and a little overwhelmed. I think I have solutions that work, but it's hard to tell. What does the greater community think? Thanks.

Thanks very much E Mann, that was a very helpful thread. I think it actually would apply for youtube as well. For other users, here's a direct link to the settings for Premiere Elements:
    http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2007/12/08/exporting-with-adobe-premiere-in-720p/
    Roughly, the answer is:
    Quicktime container
    Video codec: H.264
Quality: 80 (I used 100 and it just takes longer to encode)
Frame Rate: 29.97 (I guess if you are shooting in 24p, this might be different)
    Bitrate: 5000 (I might try 8000)
    Audio codec: AAC
    Output channels: Stereo
    Frequency: 48kHz
Now, my own personal changes to this recipe are:
Quality: 100 - takes longer to encode, no file size difference
    Bitrate: 8000
    Frequency: 44kHz (recommended by youtube)
One final note is that for Vimeo it appears you may have to try encoding in 29.97 or 23.97 and test to see which you like better. Apparently Vimeo caps fps at 24.
The nice thing about this is that you can get a quality video directly out of Premiere Elements and you don't have to pipe it through another program.

    Hi SAP Gurus,

  • Print to pdf: Asks for name of file, but does not actually print a pdf file.

Printing to PDF:  When I have text in MS Word, or Notepad and I want to print it as a PDF file, when I attempt to do so.  The widget stating now printing foo.txt comes up  (in the printer spooler window foo.txt - Notepad is seen), then the save as insert filename hit "save" button ( foo.txt no longer in spooler window) and in notepad I get invalid handle.
If done in ms word.  same as above accept spooler shows foo.docx. and no invalid handle diagnostic.

    Hi kernwh,
I checked for the same but it only asks once for the file name.

  • Best FCP QT export settings for HD video to Keynote?

I am exporting 3-5 minute long HD video clips shot at 1080i and then deinterlaced in FCP. These short vids will be embedded within Keynote, which is starting to have a problem with these 1gb to 2gb files (when exported at h264.)
HDV already reduces image sharpness it is. I want to keep the quality/footage sharpness up as high as possible. The selected video size ends up being about 1065 x 569, but that is a size, not a sharpness, one of the things I always found confusing when referring to it as "resolution".
So what settings would you suggest when outputting via FCP?

I found (via a friend who is experienced in Pr & En) that it all comes down to the export/authoring settings.
In Pr, my export settings needed to be adjusted as follows:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Preset: PAL Progressive Widescreen High Quality
Selected 'DVD' in the Basic Settings section of the
Multiplexer tab (this creates a single mpeg file rather than a m2v file which has a separate video and audio file)
Selected the highest possible quality (5) in the Basic Video Settings section of the Video tab, changed the TV Standard to PAL (to suit Australian TVs) and then
Set the minimum/target/maximum bitrate settings to 8Mbps (when I set it at 9Mbps, the final file had too high a bitrate for DVD)
In the Audio tab, I selected PCM as the audio type.
I also ensured that the Use Maximum Render Quality checkbox was ticked at the bottom of the export settings window.
    Then I exported.
    Once encoding was complete I opened Encore, started a new project, selected DVD as the authoring mode and PAL as the Television Standard within the Basic settings for the new project. I then imported the final mpeg file as a timeline into Encore, set all the appropriate first play/title button/end play functions as necessary, then I opened the Edit Quality Presets window from the File menu and made the following settings;
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
Presets: PAL DV High quality 8Mb CBR 1 Pass
Basic Video Settings - Quality: set to maximum (5)
Basic Video Settings - Field Order: None (Progressive)
Basic Video Settings - Pixel Aspect Ratio: Widescreen 16:9
Basic Video Settings - Bitrate Settings - Bitrate [Mbps]: set to maximum (9)
Basic Audio Settings - Audio Format Settings: Audio Format: PCM
    click OK
Then I authored the DVD and was quite pleased with the result. Still not quite to the quality I was hoping for (i.e. the quality of a DVD movie), but still a significant improvement on my initial attempts using default Pr & En settings.
    Hope it helps

  • "Stocks" App posts wrong dates for news articles

I often read the news articles shown under the stocks that I own. I have noticed that with the iPod's included Stock app, the date of the news articles are not accurate. I go to read what I think is a recent news article, only to find out that it is a month old. I also notice the same old news headlines each day being refreshed with the current day's date again and again.
Just reporting this as a bug and an annoyance, making the Stocks App provided with the iPod basically useless.
Are there any known solutions other than using a different Stock app?

I know i posted a similar post earlier this week. But the tutorial I got pointed at didnt work for what im trying to accomplish...

  • PDF save settings for new Firefox reader

I have seen discussions on how to change your own settings in Firefox so PDFs display correctly (Viewing PDF documents in Firefox 19+) however I am looking for a solution on how to save PDFs so they display correctly within the default new Firefox reader. Our PDFs are looking bad and I can't go into each clients browser settings and fix (http://www.cherrybekaertbenefits.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/ACA_Infographic_072114.pdf). Are their any settings within the Acrobat Distiller that will fix this without the viewer having to go into their own settings? My team uses Creative Cloud so any updates or setting solutions would be greatly appreciated! I will report back if I find anything on the Firefox forums but so far I've seen nothing.

I believe I've found a solution. I had inquired on both the Mozilla and Adobe forums hoping someone out there was having a similar issue.
    Kudos to jscher2000 on Mozilla!!
    The Solution--
'Optimize for Fast Web View' appears to be the issue.
Note: When you uncheck this option the PDF becomes significantly larger but no more bad color. I've found if you also uncheck 'Preserve Illustrator Capabilities' and 'Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers' as well then the file size goes back down quite a bit.
    Optimize checked= 183k
    Optimize unchecked = 923k
Optimize, Preserve and Layers unchecked = 566k
