Best Quality importing 8mm analog and 8mm Digital Video Tapes

Hi folks,
I have imported several 8mm analog and 8mm digital 8 video tapes using a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and firewire cable into my iMac. As referenced many times, the quality is so-so due to the loss of half the lines; a deficiency in iMovie 8.
I just acquired a copy of iMovie 6HD to address this. Both are now installed on my iMac.
Would I lose any video quality if I first import into iMovie 6HD and then export from HD to iMovie 8 using the "Import from iMovie HD" option. In other words, does using iMovie HD as an interim step address the "line loss" problem associated with video tape input that exists in iMovie 8.
For diehard HD users this may seem counter-intuitive but I like some of the title and transition capabilities in iMovie 8 and am willing to sacrifice some editing function/capability if the original video quality is not compromised.
TIA,
Ed

Bengt,
Thanks for the reply. So importing first to HD doesn't solve my problem. I need to edit in HD and publish in HD or lose half of the interlaced video.
I am aware that importing from tape directly to iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 loses half the video. I was hoping that using HD as an intermediate would solve my problem.
Guess I need to learn editing in HD.
Could you please just confirm. I have become very comfortable editing in '08 and my first few looks at HD aren't getting me there....yet.
Thanks again.

  • Best quality import from VHS

I'm importing some VHS tapes into iMovie09 using an ADVC-55 and then MPEGstreamclip to break the project into small clips. However, I'm new to MPEGstreamclip and want to use the best quality settings for the data transfer. Rather than spending many hours trying different strategies, can anyone recommend what settings will, in general, give the best quality?
The tapes, and output DVD, are PAL.
    Thanks for suggestions and tips.

As a new user, what is the best channel for obtaining iMovie 06, given that it's the best method for maintaining quality?
I understand your frustration. Actually, once you get the work flow down, it is pretty easy. I think it's fairly well established that iMovie 06 will give you better quality with DV video to make a DVD.
Obviously, it seems a little complicated to have 2 versions of iMovie. I can't think of any other cases where I have 2 versions of the same program. However, in the case of iMovie, iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 are vastly different.
I use both of these iMovies on a regular basis. But on the project that you are describing, I would definitely use iMovie 06 for better quality. Someday, when you're dealing with high definition and are sharing these videos on the internet, you may find iMovie 09 to your liking.
I found iMovie 06 to be very intuitive and easy to learn. My video editing goes back to the film days, so I find iMovie 06 quite natural to me.
If you buy the iLife 06 disk, only install iMovie 06 from it. iMovie 06 will not delete anything and it works fine with iDVD 09.
Basically, connect your camera and import into iMovie 06, then share to iDVD 09. Do a 5 or 10 minute project first to establish your work flow. Do this a few times and you can zip along thru the remaining work.
You can get iMovie 06 in a number of ways. You cannot download it FROM APPLE any longer (it was free for a time). You can also find iMovie 06 on the iLife 06 install disc. You can buy iLife 06 on Amazon or eBay.
But be prepared to pay about double the cost of iLife 09 (but well worth every penny). Seller's are becoming aware of its value.

  • Best Quality import when editing with a DVD master?

I have been on a project, that is nearing online, that has a large amount of footage that I have had to import off of DVD. I have been using Streamclip's "Apple Motion Jpeg A" setting at 100% when I have converted files to QT. Anybody know the best way to get this material off DVD and into QT at the best quality? The footage is so bad, that it may not make a difference, but I thought I would try. Anybody use any treatment tricks when working with old, home movie type footage, to "spruce it up" and help it not stand out so much?
    Thanks for your input.

The question would be; is the footage bad only because it is from heavily compressed DVD-Video? Or is it bad because it's old home movie footage? Or a combination of the two.
Since it is old home video footage, I'd suspect a fairly low quality camcorder was used. If that's the case, I'd convert the footage to the Apple DV/DVCPro codec using MPEG Streamclip. Or simply capture the footage through a DV device while playing the disc in a DVD player.
Once it's on your system, try using the 3-Way Color Corrector filter to enhance the contrast and control the chroma levels.

  • Best Quality Importing

I am a high-end audio user and would like to know which format should I use to import my high resolution CDs. I shunned MP3 players for a long time because I was told they truncate files to fit and that ultimately sounds horrible upon playback on a killer audio system such as the Levinson I use.
I read "iTunes help" but am still not sure which format (AIFF, WAV, AAC, Apple Lossless) to use for the best reproduced, uncompromised sound. I'm not concerned with disc space as I am with sound. I imported using AAC and I could hear on my car audio system that the bass was bloated and the treble dry. It sucked and that was in my truck using only its decent stock system.
Taking the advice of an Apple salesman, I re-imported a known recording using a WAV format and it was so much better but still not the same as an actual CD in depth and dynamics. (I did a comparo in my truck using the iPod and my CD player). Something is not right here.
Could it be the cable connection to my iPod as I am using the headphone jack to my car audio AUX input? Would using the iPod's docking connection on its bottom to the back of the radio clear this up? I get conflicting advice at the Apple store and a vague answer using iTunes "help."
After using MIT cable for many years, I know cables and their connections make a big difference in sound but at the iPod's level, would this matter?
I don't want to use a custom setting where the computer will add or subtract any info from the recording. I want all of what's on the disc to end up on the iPod, no more no less. I want to get this right before I import the thousand's of songs I have in my library. It would be a drag to have to do it all over again as my Powerbook is as slow as a snail and it is cranky too.

I developed an ear for sound for the years I have been listening. When I fire up my home audio system, there is nothing but smoothness, effortlessness, wide and deep soundstaging, good micro and macro dynamics etc. All combine to a relaxing and involving exerience which becomes mroe obvious after I listening to my iPod.
I have read the compelling arguments for and against certain formats and on paper it might mean they should pass the music on w/o degrading or changing it. I use my ear as a guide. The iPod sounds cupped or hollow. Years ago jitter was the big problem in audio until FIFO (First In First Out) was developed by Levinson. I found that leaving the CD as it is w/o introducing any anomaly upon playback is key. I finesse the cables and components later until it sounds "there."
A few years ago I read an article in Stereophile about a test of the iPod's settings for recording and playback, exactly what we are discussing here. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what settings they recommended but they felt the unit came close to really good sound. It's low price relative to the hideously expensive high end market, compelled the reviewer to give the iPod a higher rating and a recommendation. The reviewer largely used his acute sense of hearing for his critique and compared his results to known equipment in A/B testing. Again I cannot recall what cables and connection he chose, but the iPod has improved since then and so has iTunes software which I felt would solidify my purchase decision toward MP3s.
I went to the Alpine website and found they do not have a cable to support the data link port in the new Classic. So for now, I have to deal with the trippy sounding recordings if the cable is the culprit.
The older the CD medium gets, the more it seems to hold up to newer technologies such as what is inside an iPod. This is ironic because the CD was never originally designed to sound amazing, just to be more convenient over LP. Today, it really does sound good for its paltry 16/44. When I can get them, I purchase only labels like "Telarc" and "Chesky" etc., who are fanatical about the recording process and it really pays off with great sound. That's what I want in my iPod.
It's taken 20+ years to get the big companies to come up with a better sounding disc and I hope not another 20 to fix the iPod.

  • Which is the best way to record full hd on digital betacam tape?

    Hello,
I'm capturing and editing full hd size but the final product has to be delivered on a digital betacam tape with Edit to Tape option to record. I have tried doing so with the following 2 ways:
    1. Recording from HD timeline on a HD tape. Then capturing back on the machine from the same HD tape as PAL. Then recording on a Digital betacam as final product.
    2. Exporting from HD timeline with current settings as a qucktime movie. Importing the same movie on a PAL timeline. Then recording on a digtal betacam.
My timeline setting for HD is : Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 1920x1080 HDTV 1080i 16:9; Pixel Aspect Ratio SQUARE
My timeline setting for PAL is: Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 720x576 PAL CCIR 601/DV Pal 5:4; Pixel Aspect Ratio PAL CCIR 601 (720x576)
The problem is when the episode is broadcasted on tv, the quality of video looks bad and a little jarred. Can anyone suggest any other way to record on a digital betacam?
    Thank you.
P.S. I've tried dragging the hd sequence to a PAL timeline.
And also exporting using qicktime conversion to Custom size 720x576 without preserving pixel aspect ratio with Uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 compression and then changing the distort setting to -33.33 to fit on a PAL timeline with black bars. These 2 options look better than the ones i've mentioned above but I'm not sure if it is right. Please Advice.

Go into the AJA Control Panel. For secondary output, choose 525i 29.97. Right click on the output option you want (they are on the right) and choose SECONDARY or 525i.  Then a little box should appear between the Frame Buffer and the output option that says DOWNCONVERT.

however, i can't invite my brother to a one way video chat...when i invite him, his end shows up with a white screen...no video, but audio...
he has a g4 quicksilver...he is running tiger...we both use the aim account for ichat...
any ideas??? we really need some help on this because we both have 4 year old daughters who want to video chat...
he is going to get a camera if we can get this thing working...

    Hi Seusman,
Sounds like you have cracked it.
Framerates are detemined by what processor you have, with some adjustment on a chat by chat basis depending what the other person can manage.
The Bitrate is controlled by what Connection Speed you have, The System Preference > Quicktime > Streaming tab setting and iChat > Preferences > Video section Bandwidth Setting, plus any adjustments to match who you are talking to.
The up speed is more important than the Download speed when we are talking ADSL connections.
Any spped test will tell you get about 80% of what the ISP says they sell you.
iChat will use about 80% of what is left (depending on settings)
It is somewhat lowered depending on the framerate your Mac can do and what other things yuo are asking the Procesor to do and how much RAM you have obviously can effect that as well.
The framerates you quote are the same as mine.
The bit rates if often what I see in iChat based on my 1Mb down /256K up service.

  • Best Quality Settings for a 24pa 16:9 Video

Need DVDSP setting for best quality 10 minute DVD shot with canon xl2 24pa in true 16:9. Exporting from FCP to compressor. Cand seem to get DVDSP to recognize 24p. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for your response. After exporting 24 pa sequence from FCP, using compressor 90 minute 16:9 2 pass (dont see a 60 minute in Version 2) - asset displays as 29.97 - not 24. Also - there is no setting for just 16:9 - its either letterbox or pan-scan.
How do I know if DVDSP is importing the asset as 24p. Also - letterboxing still appears which indicates to me that DVDSP is not recognizing the true 16:9 shot with the xl2.
This is a great 10 minute production shot in 24pa- want to get the best quality possible to be compatible with most popular DVD players. Looks ok - but not what I expected.
    Thanks for your help.

  • What's the best way of importing, editing, exporting and watching AVCHD videos without losing quality?

Whenever I import AVCHD (.mts extension files) to Final Cut Pro X (via Import from camera), iMovie, Adobe Premiere Elements 10 or Adobe Premiere Pro CS4; when I later export those videos to any format I can imagine, I can't get the same quality than when I play them through the camera connected by HDMI to TV (the camera's movements are not any smooth).
How have you solved this problem? Is it just me?
By the way, maybe the problem is in watching: what apps do you use to play the exported media? Do you watch the final videos just on TV? Do you create blu-ray discs?
I was also wondering what would happen if I created a blu-ray image, have you tried this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pol

My video was shot by a Canon HF100 at 1440x1080 25fps 1080i 25i (interlaced) and imported to Final Cut Pro X without transcoding to ProRes (1st time) and transcoding (2nd time).
The project settings are set to: set automatically based on 1st video clip (so they're 1440x1080 1080i 25i) and I used to leave Audio and Render to default settings (Surround, 48kHz, ProRes 422), but I have also done a few tests with ProRes 422 HQ and Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2. Should I try with ProRes 4444?
I usually export the project using Current settings (in video codec), and I've also burned an AVCHD DVD (I plybacked it on PlayStation 3 - also looked choppy). I've also exported to H.264 codec.
The video looks choppy on Mac played by Quicktime and VLC. The video I could export to MP4 also looked choppy on PlayStation 3 and Samsung LED TV.
    Thanks for taking your time,
    Pol

  • Procedure for achiving best quality converting 8mm to dvd

In advance I understand the crap in crap out thoery. Having said that I am looking to enhance old videos with FCP X. My first question is should I convert the project to progressive, thinking more lines are better? When I do it bloats the file size and appears to blur the clip. I'm trying to keep a natural feel while improving the look as best as I can. Are there basic steps I should follow to active this?
    Thank you for your time
    Rick Pratt

    Hi Alex,
    no conversion needed:
iM works with dv, a dvd has finally mpeg2 - any "inbetween conversion" means loss of quality!
in case, you have many stills in your project, many recommend here NOT to use the export button in iM, but simply drag'n drop the project (that file with a star) onto an open iDVD project, so rendering is done by iDVD......

  • Best Plug and Play Digital Video Camcorder

  • Why did iphoto reduce the quality of my photo and turn my videos into jpegs?

I messed up my iphoto library by moving what i thought were the originals to an external hard drive. i've been told that i should have just made a copy of iPhoto file instead of going inside and taking what I wanted. it reduced the quality of all my photos so that they went down from about 3-5 MB each to being 30-50 kb each. The videos have all been changed in jpegs.
Anyway, I only have one back up (for an unknown reason) and the videos in that back up are the proper videos, but the video dimensions are tiny.
Any idea how I can piece it back together again and end up with what I had before?
    Thanks,
    Tom

Folks, I have the same issue.  Here is a sample image:   http://i.imgur.com/BkFelpt.jpg
1- this has nothing to do with nikon; I shot that on a Canon camera
2- this has nothing to do with disk space; I have 150GB of free space.
    I am running a 2009 iMac (2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo) runing Mavericks - OSX 10.9.2
    I am using "iPhoto 8.1.2 (424)"
This problem happens randomly.  There is nothing that my wife or I have been able to determine to be the cause of iphot doing this.  The truly annoying thing is that you don't even notice it until you export the photo for use in facebook or some such
    The procedure goes like this:
      - hook up the camera and import photos
      - browse through the photos and edit the photos to touch them up (using "enhance" or "crop" or "adjust") until we're happy with the photo.  The photo looks fine at this point.
      - finish editting and the photo thumbnail that you see in your catalog of photos STILL looks fine.
      - now export the photo and look at it outside of iphoto and discover this horrible vertical affect
      - Go back into iphoto and the thumbnail STILL looks fine.  But double-click to bring up the larger size image and NOW you see the vertical bar.
We NEVER had this issue before upgrading to Mavericks.
Yes, I could upgrade iphoto.  it's not that much money. But the principle of the matter is very irritating.  This was caused by Mavericks.  It is some sort of a bug!

  • Storing analog converted to digital video for editing later

Okay, so I am still experimenting AND learning. I was hoping I could use the DVD as a storage medium and later pick, choose and edit clips. I tried but now I have a movie of all the clips I took on that tape and I can't access them. What is the best way to store the video for later use in editing and compiling?

Sorry I have been busy with other non tech projects lately. I think I was supposed to mark the replies as helpful or solved or something so all of you people who gave input could accumulate points. I am new to these discussion groups.
I am going to try the following:
    1. convert small chunks of video
    2. Store as QT video on DVD
    3. Store as QT video on hard drive
    4. Then try editing each
Thanks for all your help. Let me know how to give points!

  • Supplying 26 Analog Outputs and 104 Digital Outputs

I am a graduate student in CWRU and trying to control 26 brushless DC motors independently that requires 26 analog and 104 digital outputs. I couldn't find any card that is capable of this task. Can you please suggest some solution to my application?

Hello. I would recommend 7 NI-7344s. Each 7344 has 4 analog outputs to drive servo motors and 32 configurable digital input/output (DIO) lines. However, if you don't need the trajectory control from the 7344 (ie, you're just running your motors with a constant voltage or your feedback loop is slow enough for software), then you could use a few NI 6704 Analog Output boards (each with 16 AO lines) and a few DIO boards (such as the 6503 which has 96 static DIO lines).
If you can give me some more details about your application (what the DIO is used for, what kind of feedback you need, etc), then I should be able to recommend exact products for you.
    Cheers,

  • Getting best quality Hi-8 to DVD transfers

I'm getting ready to transfer old Hi-8 home videos to my computer. The camera the video was recorded on is kind of tired. I'm thinking of buying a Hi-8 deck for the project. Does anyone have experience with this? Nicer used decks on e bay with a TBC are a little pricey. I might not mind spending the money if I would get substantial results over a cheaper plain vanilla deck. Also I was told archiving from Hi-8 to i Movie an back to Mini DV would look better than burning to a DVD. Is the format on DVD and Mini DV tape not the same?
I've got a fair amount of experience using both i Movie and Final Cut Express. I'm just not sure about getting the best look I can out of my old video tapes, and I don't have the equipment to do my own comparisons. Thanks for any info. Steve.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Steve,
You might look into getting a Digital8 camcorder. Many (but not all so be sure to check specifically) will play back old Hi8 and 8mm tapes, doing the convertion to digital on the fly into your Mac. I use a Sony Digital8 and play back my old 8mm and Hi8 analog tapes directly into iMovie 4 without any problems. Probably a much cheaper solution than a dedicated Hi-8 tape deck.
As much as I respect Lennart's opinions and comments, I do have to disagree with his statement that "no principal difference between VHS and Hi-8". I would argue there is about 150 more lines of resolution in Hi-8 tapes (400 lines) over VHS (240-250 lines) and better color.
As mentioned in this thread, DVD is really a display/viewing media, not an archive media. For long term archiving, you want to keep your newly digitized footage in DV format so you want to export to either Digital8 tape, Mini-DV tape, leave it on a hard drive, and/or wait for Blu-Ray DVD drives to become afforable.
I import my old analog tapes, edit slightly the now digitized footage, then make a archive copy back to tape on my Digital8 camcorder. I then also make a DVD version, but that is to have a convienent way to watch out home movies, not as an archive I would want to use later to edit or work from. I will use the digital tape for that.
