Best Sequence settings for JVC Everio files (TOD format)
I own a JVC Everio camcorder, and I recorded some videos if Full HD (1920 X 1080). I loaded the TOD files to my computer and converted them to MPEGs using the bundled PowerDirector program. When I play these HD MPEG files in Windows Media Player, they look fantastic. Very smooth color and no pixelation.
I loaded these files into a Premier Pro CS4 project because I need to perform some simple editing (trim in/out points, small rotation, and color correction). I created a sequence using the AVCHD 1080p square pixel preset, which has the following settings:
AVCHD 1080p square pixel
29.97 frames/second
Square pixels
Progressive scan
30 fps Drop-Fram time code
48kHz audio
I-Frame Only MPEG
Maximum Bit Depth, Maximum Render Quality
When I play the video files using either the Source or Project Monitor, the quality of the files appears degraded compared to what I see through Windows Media Player. I'm concerned that I'm not using the correct settings to best work with this source video format.
Should I change either the Program or Sequence settings to optimize for this file format, or is Windows Media Player performing some magic in the background?
Thanks,
Matthew

This ARTICLE might offer some tips on the TOD files.

What are the best sequence settings for editing a movie made on your iPhone
I have a lot of footage taken on my iPhone 3Gs. I want to make a summer fun movie and compile all the clips together. What are going to be my best sequence settings to make editing of the footage easy and viewable in real time without the need to render. Is this possible?
Open the videos in QT Pro player and export to a codec and frame rate consistent with any easy set up such as NTSC DV and edit that.

What are the best sequence settings for a movie to be put on youtube?
I am making a video that consists of mainly jpegs and audio. The final movie needs to be crisp and fairly high resolution because the pictures have some house plans that need to be easily read.
I have tried the following settings only to get a blurry image result in the end:
Frame Size: 960x720 Aspect Ratio: HD (960x720) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 DV 720X480
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Quicktime Video Settings:
Compressor DVCPRO50 - NTSC
Quality: 100%
This seems to me like it should be a crisp enough image result but the end result is very poor. When I use the H.264 Compressor instead of DVCPRO50 - NTSC, the image is much sharper but the faded transitions are sometimes choppy, and you have to render the timeline with each change you make. Please help me find the best overall settings for smooth editing and sharper image.
Thanks,
CalebYour settings -- between the Compressor, Pixel Aspect Ratio and Frame Size -- are oil-and-water.
If this is going to YouTube (meaning not going to be viewed on traditional TVs) and it's mainly Photos, try using this:
Frame Size: 1280x720
Aspect Ratio: HDTV 720p
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
Editing Timebase: 29.97
Compressor: Motion JPEG A
Quality: 100% (though in a lot of cases, you could drag this down to about 75-80% and quality will not suffer)
Unfortunately, you won't get much (if any) real-time effects. Unless, of course, you're on FCP 6 or later, where you can use a ProRes compressor instead. But with your signature saying 10.4. something, I wasn't sure if it was safe to assume that. The Motion-JPEG setting should work in all versions. -
Best sequence settings for editing HD video material from Nikon D3S
Hello there,
My quesstion is, what are the best settings in FCP for editing material from the Nikon D3S?
At this point I had a sequence (automatically generated from FCP) with settings
Frame Size: 1440X1080 Aspect Ratio (1440X1080) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD 1440 X 1080
Field Dominance Upper (Odd)
Editing Timebase: 25
QuickTime Video Settings
Compressor: HDV 1080i50
Now, when I place a video clip form the D3S into the timeline, in the preview screen it does not fill the frame. I have to grab the corners and pull it to fill the gaps.
I opened the same video clip in QT to check on the inspector and this is what is telling me:
Apple OpenDML JPEG, 1280 X 720
FPS: 24
Normal size: 1280X 720
Current size: 1280 X 720 (Actual)
What do I need to do, so that the sequence settings are very similar to my AVI files? Or to make the same? I assume that if I pull the corners to fill the frame, I am loosing quality? Is that the case?
Since I need to deliver this today I will continue working on the sequence as with the former settings, but I am wondering that if I have to change the settings, will this affect my already edited material? Do I then need to start a new sequence from scratch?
Sorry, I guess too many questions, but they all lead to the same thing
Thanks a lot!
EmilI have a D3s. I'm using FCP7, it's been awhile since I used version 5 so all I can do is let you know my workflow with ver.7 If you convert to ProRes 422 1080x720 24fps, it works very well, change the audio from 44 to 48kHz and set the frame rate to 24 instead of 23.98
Here's what I do.
1. Copy the CF card to the HD of the computer
2. Open Compressor, in these next steps we'll make a custom Droplet.
a. In the Settings tab, select Formats > Quick Time > Apple ProRes 422
b. Drag this to "Drag Settings & Destinations Here" and click it
c. In the Inspector, select Encoder
d. Select Video Enabled, then hit Settings. Frame rate 24 > OK
e. Select Audio Enabled, then hit Settings. Choose 48 kHz
f. Save As. Name it. It will be in > Settings tab > Custom
g. Click your new Cutom setting
h. File > Create Droplet
i. select your new custom setting
j. save it to the desktop, leave destination as source.
3. open the Droplet,
4. drag all you D3s clips in, change destination to a new folder
Now you have all your original .DVI and the converted ProRes clips
5. Open FCP, select Final Cut Pro > Audio/Video Settings
6. in the Sequence Setting tab select Apple ProRes 422 1280x720 48kHz
7. Clip Duplicate and give it a new name
8. change the Editing Timebase to 24 > OK
9. select the summary tab click Create Easy Setup
10. name it, give it a description > Create
11. the next time your open FCP use this Easy Setup
12. your D3s clip should not need rendered now.
13. When your done editing use Send to Compressor
14. Vimeo will accept a wide varity of formats
15. I use Quicktime H.264 with settings set to best
16. For Blu-ray I use Export to QT Movie and use Sony DVD Architect to author the BD at 35 mbps, but that's another story. -
Best sequence settings for imported video
I created a simple screencast of a powerpoint slideshow with another piece of software, and exported it as .mov (H264). The screencast was created at 25 FPS with no audio.
When I import it to Premiere CS5, the video quality is pretty bad. I can't read someo the smaller letters on the slides, and when the slides are static, the graphics on them pulsate. Bottom line is, I need the quality to be better.
I think the problem might be that I am not matching my sequence settings to fit the imported file. When I create a new sequence, there are dozens of different presets, and I have no idea which one is the best one.
The reason I want import to Premiere is so I can add audio...etc., and export, and upload to Youtube, burn to cd...etc. But, I want the quality to be good, and it is quite simply...terrible.
Any help would appreciated. For CS5 and later, the easy way to insure that your video and your project match

What are the best sequence settings for anamorphic?
sorry for the long explanation....
i have a project that was shot 16:9. my question is what is the best sequence setting to use so that when i export it to tape it will look right on a regular TV? on the FCP viewer it looks right with either setting. the difference is that if i choose a regular sequence setting ("anamorphic" unchecked), the video clips need to be rendered (it's green, but it will limit my ability to add effects and watch them without rendering). therefore i would prefer to use the anamorphic setting that does not need rendering. However, when i export the movie it comes out stretched (and only works with TV that has an anamorphic setting).
Can i edit the whole project with the anamorphic sequence setting and in the end copy it to a regular sequence without it becoming stretched?
i tried this on a little test sequence and it appeared to work, but i'm afraid that if the project becomes elaborate... well, last time i tried editing an anamorphic sequence (a while back, on FCP 2) i had to redo my whole film cut by cut with a regular sequence setting and then render it anamorphic so that it will look right.... it simply didn't work to just cut and paste the project onto a new regular sequence (could this have happened because i had many effects?). it came out stretched as it would when you merely uncheck the "anamorphic" box. has this been solved in the newer versions?Your settings -- between the Compressor, Pixel Aspect Ratio and Frame Size -- are oil-and-water.
If this is going to YouTube (meaning not going to be viewed on traditional TVs) and it's mainly Photos, try using this:
Frame Size: 1280x720

Best Sequence settings for Panasoic Dvx100a...still trying to slow mo.
Ok, so im editing this guys film. He filmed on his Dvx100a at 24p with this Scene advance look thing on....not to sure that the Scene advance look does...
Anyways. We are..as we have posted a few times before trying to slow a few shots...everything looks like it could be better. What should are Sequence settings be set at? right now they are
Frame size 740-480
Pixel aspect ratio NTSC_CCIR 601/DV
QuickTime Video setting
Compressor DV/DVCPRO-ntsc
Video Processing
Render in 8-bit YUV
We read that we may need to use Cinema tools tools to do something to it?
I hope that gives you the info you need to help figure this one
We also tried to use shake...but we couldent do much, its my first time using it.
Thank....you guys need to get paid for thisFCP has a distinct slow motion look, I personally find it distinctly unappealing. As previous posts have suggested, you should do the slow motion work in shake.
shake is a completely different beast than final cut. I recommend taking a look at the below link- it's a wonderful tutorial by the captain.
http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/pagewrapper.cgi?forumid=8&page=http://www.creativecow.net/articles/mench_michael/slo wmotion/index.html
In conclusion, Getting a really good film-like slow motion look is going to be impossible because there just are not enough images being captured on the tape per second when shooting in 24Pa mode. But shake will do a better job at it than final cut.
Good luck. -
What are the best export settings for a HD video in Premier Pro CS4?
Hi!
I've been having so much trouble with this issue and it's something that continually frustrates my boss. I have a HD video the settings for it are
FPS 23.98
1920 x 1080, then a few lines down it says 1408 x 792
16 bit,
2 channels
48000 Hz
What should the settings be when I make a new sequence?
When I look at it in the window in Premiere Pro I have to contantly 'shrink' the image to fit the window, is that something I should be doing or does it indicate the sequence settings are incorrect?
But more importantly what should the export settings be? I exported a 4 minute long video and the size was 1 GB, I know that's too big.
I need to export it without loosing any quality and export another one that meets the Youtube and Vimeo limits on size.
Vimeo is 500 MB per week, sometimes I upload 4 videos per week. I think Youtube you can only upload 500 MB at a time.
I need to get smaller sizes with loosing the least amount of quality possible AND the best export settings for quality, so I guess I have 3 separate questions-
What are the best sequence settings for HD video?
What are the best export settings for HD without loosing any quality?
What are the best export settings for the size to come out around 500 MB with loosing the least amount of quality possible?
Thank You!

On the above thread I used the 5th anwer, and it's going to take about 7 hours to export a 4 minute video :/It Stands for "Coder Decoder."
Your format is like a container for your video file. Certain containers can hold certain codecs and not others. Other containers can hold other codecs. Sometimes different containers can hold the same codecs.
This might be a bad analogy but I'll give it a try.
A coffe cup (container) can hold pretty much any liquid you drink, where a red solo cup (container) won't hold scolding water. So, the coffe cup would be your container of choice most likely because it has the most options for liquids (codecs). But, you might want a red solo cup for just a single crappy beer at a party (a moderate quality streaming video on the web). In that case, you don't need all the optoins of another container.
In Premiere Pro CC H.264 is a Container and the Codec in one option. This has been streamlined for web distrobution of video to be played in browsers without things like Flash or special players.
Were as if you choose the QuickTime Container there are over 40 codec optoins (at least on my machine with additinal ones installed) but you may run into an issue where your browser doesn't support QuickTime playback.
I would say that your container is for compatability with players and your codec is taken into consideration when looking at the quality of the compression.
Yesteraday I wrote a blog entery on Exporting from Premiere Pro and found that the MPEG-4 codec inside of the QuickTime container gave me much richer colors than the H.264 container/codec option.
I posted the link before but here it is:

Sequence Settings for HD to SD DVD
I have an HD Camcorder that records to a flash 8 GB memory card. Once I import the files into Final Cut Pro, I need to export using Compressor with the "DVD Best Quality for 90 minutes" option. The problem is that Compressor takes forever. Over 60 hours estimated.
I've tried changing the sequence settings before I add the footage to the timeline, but no matter which settings I use for the sequence, it still takes over 60 hours to export.
I've tried matching the video settings with the sequence, and almost any other combination I can think, but there are simply too many "Trial & Error" options to go through.
Is there a setting(s) for the sequence in Final Cut Pro, that when you export to Compressor it doesn't take that long?
Any suggestions would be great?
Thanks.David, I'm using a Samsung HMX-H100. An example of the file name is: HDV_001.MP4
I'm shooting in HD, 1080i. Overall, the length of the footage is about 45 minutes. Sometimes I use an external scratch disk, but I couldn't tell a difference when I was using one and not.
My sequence settings have been varied. I have let the sequence match the video clip settings, I have changed the sequence settings before I added the footage and then let the sequence settings stay like that.
In Final Cut Pro in the sequence settings, I've used the default presets, and changed it as well. Since my final goal is to burn an SD DVD, I'm looking for the best sequence settings that will allow for the fastest export from Compressor, and still maintain the HD clarity that the footage was shot with.
Let me know if you need any more details.
Thanks. -
Hello
Which is the best sequence settings in Premier Pro CS4 to work with MPEG files (720 x 480)?
I wish someone can help me because there are no presets available for this format and my redering times are huge.
Thank you in advance.I will go on working with the red line. It is true that I have a slow
machine and that causes problems in the preview, but for export it is OK.
Thank you very much for your useful advice.

As Harm points out, Rendering (the need for which is indicated by the "red
line.") is ONLY for playback. I complete many Projects, and never need to
Render, as things play fine. Other times, I might Render a Keyframed section
dozens of times, looking closely at what I have done, as smoothly as is
possible). Don't be put off by the red line. Only Render if playback starts
to stutter, etc. Then, you might only need to Render part of the Timeline,
and that can be controlled with the WAB (Work Area Bar) to limit the area of
the Render. Note: if you do adjust the WAB, it's always a good idea to hit
the \ [Backslash key], and then Dbl-click on the little "box" in the middle
of the WAB to reset it to full, before you do an Export. Though most Export
options can be set to WAB, or Full Sequence, I've found a few, that got
confused and try to Export just the WAB, regardless of the setting. Maybe
CS4 has finally fixed this 100%? I still do that reset of the WAB out of
habit.

Best Sequence Preset for Canon HG 10?
Hi guys, i have a Cannon HG10, but i am confused on which Sequence Preset to choose when starting a new project.
My settings for the Cannon are 1920x1080, 15mbps, PF25 (frame rate), 1080i
I want to choose the best settings possible for the best quality
also once my video is edited what are the best export settings for me?
i'm so confused
thanks for the the helpI you have no idea what to choose drag a file from the Project Window into the New Item Icon. That will setup the correct sequence.
On the whole it would be AVCHD 1080i50 non anamorfic. -
Best Compostion Settings for DVD output
I am working on a project that does involve some regular DV footage but the vast majority of the footage will be animation movs exported from After Effects. These movies are simply pans and zooms on still photos done in After Effects.
What I'm wondering is what sequence settings I should use.
The final output will be to DVD and it will be viewed mainly on TVs, not computers.
One thing I hate is when I do these still pics and on a TV they look jittery or shimmery or alias-y or whatever it's called.
Is there some way to avoid this?
Is it possible to do a movie in progressive scan even though some of the footage is DV?
How about when exporting from AE? Should I use the DV setting or the progressive setting?
Any thoughts will be very helpful.
Thanks,
SDavid,
Your answer "Depends on what is causing the problem. Could be one of (or a combination of) many things; resolution too high, areas of fine detail in the image, poor scan, dimpled/textured photo paper, patterns within the image, areas of high contrast within the image, etc. Each of these problems needs to be addressed individually for each photo." intrigues me.
We are scanning the photos as high res (3000x2000 in some cases) TIF files to allow for panning and zooming. They are B+W and do often have high contrast. They also often have areas of fine detail. I don't think poor scanning or dimpled paper are issues.
Could you offer any ideas on how to fix these images for TV viewing? I will say that I have read other posts on here about using deinterlace, flicker filter, etc and I am never pleased with the way the image is degraded with these filters.
The best I have found is to use a slight blur. On this forum people often say less than .5 pixels but that is never enough to eliminate the flicker, shimmer, what-have-you. I am often forced to use a gaussian blur of 1 to 1.5 pixels.
What I don't like about this is how it then looks on a computer monitor (should people pop the DVD into watch on their home computer). On a TV the images generally look fine.
Any ideas?
Do you think just sticking with regular NTSC DV sequence settings is appropriate?
What about sequence settings for video processing? Would it help at all to use "high quality YUV" rather than "8 bit YUV" since these are animation movies of still pics?
Thanks for the help,

Best export settings for video for web
Can anyone give me some advice on the best export settings for a short video that is to be viewed on the web? I have some short, say 2 minute videos that need to be placed on a website and need a reasonable file size. What would the best Format and Preset options be in Premiere? Would it be helpful to utilize After Effects to reduce file size? Thank you in advance to anyone who has some advice!!
For now, it would be on my own website or a clients website. But there may
be another possibility, I have a client that already has some videos
available for viewing on their website, looks like they are YouTube videos
that play on their site, and there is an option to "Watch on YouTube". So I
guess I would love some recommended export settings for a straightforward
video clip on my website, and if I need to explore the YouTube preset in
Premiere, let me know. Thank you, I really appreciate your answers and

Best Streamclip settings for iPhone 4 Video - to edit in FCE
First, the problem: iPhone 4 records HD video in h.264. But Final Cut Express doesn't have sequence settings for editing h.264 or iPhone video clips.
The solution: I'm using Streamclip to convert all of my iPhone 4 videos to a format FCE lets me edit in.
Question: What are the optimal settings to insure that my final output retains quality almost equal to the original video shot on my iPhone? (More specifically, I plan on uploading to Youtube as a HD video).
I've read somewhere that I should convert to Quicktime Movie format, with Apple Intermediate Codec 720p 30fps. Is that the best compression type to convert to for editing iPhone 4 videos in FCE? If so, how should the other settings in streamclip be jiggered? For instance, does it make much difference if I set the Quality slider to 100% (As opposed to the default at 50%?) What about audio compression settings?
(P.S. I think it's very annoying that I can't directly edit a video from iPhone 4 on another consumer Apple product, the FCE. Does FCP let me directly edit h.264/iphone 4 videos?)The slider makes no difference as AIC is variable bit rate within a specific range. No audio compression in FCE ever. Uncompressed stereo 48k, the video standard sample rate.
It would be truly miraculous if FCE worked with iPhone media as the current version predates it by three years, which in computer lifetimes is two generations, basically the equivalent of your grandfather having developed an app for a smartphone when he was a young man. FCP is a mere year old, well before the iPhone did video. Furthermore, if you'd read the forums, you'd see that H.264 is an acquisition and delivery forward. It is not used in production. The codec is not suitable for efficient production and really should never be used there. It's very unfortunate that camera manufacturers have taken the cheap way out and used this codec, rather than actually developing and using a suitable intraframe production codec. -
Best export settings for HD video playback on computer?
I have shot my video on 1080p witha DSLR and edited it in premiere pro. I exported the video in .mp4 format.
Now i imported the video in after effects and added loads of animation. I want to export it to the best quality for playback ON COMPUTER ONLY. Which is the best export settings for this purpose.
I rendered it in .avi and my 12 minute video had a size of 55GB after render and did not play smoothly in the computer.. PLEASE HELP WITH THE BEST SETTINGS for the above purpose. You messed up. You should NOT have rendered MP4 out of Premiere to use in AE. You're adding compression and quality loss in between stages. BAD video person!
The easiest thing to do would be to import your Premiere project in AE. That way it can use the original footage too. If, for some reason, you can't do that, you should render a lossless file out of Premiere. Speaking of lossless files, that's what you rendered out of AE. This page explains your large AE file issue.
Anyway, take that large file you render out of AE into the Adobe Media Encoder and render out your final compressed file. Either H.264 or WMV should work well for playback.
