Best way to cut clips out of a long long capture

Hi all,
I shoot underwater footage. I don't usually stop/record/stop during a dive and most of the time my camera is always shooting. As a result when I capture, I get a long clip which really has multiple scenes (descent, swim around, wreck penetration, different rooms, zoom levels, light, ...). It seems that a good way for me to cut those long shots in smaller clips would be to use markers which would basically be:
<in>-subclip1-<out><in>-subclip2-<out><in>-subclip3-<out>
Whether I use extended markers or not, it seems though that the subclips I get do not have enough handles to use transitions properly. What's the best way for me to do this and still have good handles ? Create the markers knowing that the in point won't be the beginning of the sequence so work a margin in ?
Thanks in advance !

Don't subclip right on your cut point. I never do this anyway. I will capture full tapes, then use markers to mark a change of scene or topic, label that marker, then make subclips. I use those subclips as clips...load them into the Viewer, look for the spot I want, mark IN, mark OUT...cut into the sequence.
So treat your subclips as regular clips and you will be fine. Don't mark too close to the start point. Subclips in FCP do not act like the ones in Avid, where you can go beyond the edges...

  • Best Way To Cut Texture From Logo Graphic?

Hello. Can someone please advise me on the best way to CUT a texture from a graphic AND still be able to use mutiple colors on the new graphic? To more specifically illustrate my question/problem, here are the steps I've taken:
    1) I created a map graphic as seen here:
    2) I was able to cutout a grid shape from the map graphic, using the pathfinder tools. As seen here:
    3) I then found a texture that I want cut out of graphic I just created. Since this is for a logo, I need the texture to actually be cutout of the shape, not just sitting above it as a white colored layer. As seen here, this is what the map graphic looks like with the texture layer over the top of it.
    4) The only way that I know of, to cookie cut the map graphic with the new texture is to hold the "alt/command key" while pressing the "minus front" option found in the pathfinder tools pallette. The only problem is that when I do this, a compound path is created, which converts the entire graphic to a single color as seen here:
I need the graphic to be the original 4 colors. The odd thing is that I was able to cut the globe grid lines out of the map layers just fine (and still able to change colors), yet now I can't when I'm trying to cut the texture from the entire graphic.
Summary: Can someone please tell me how to achieve the graphic below. I need the texture to be cutout of the graphic. The only way I can figure to cookie cutter the texture from the graphic is to create a compound path via the pathfinder tool. This leaves me with a proper cutout shape I'm looking for, but all in brown and with no ability to change the graphic back to the original 4 colors.

    Hello Jacob, Mike, and Erica,
Thank you very much for your replies to my question. I really appreciate it. Mike, in regards to your suggestion about just changing the white layer's color as needed, that is an option, but really only suitable for web use. My concern would be if the logo were to ever be printed on non white colored paper. Trying to match the color of the texture layer to that of the paper color could prove to be quite a challenge without test prints. If the matching is not done correctly, the transparent effect would be lost. That is the main reason I need to cookie cut the texture from the logo graphic.
In regards to the suggestion by all of you, I did try to use the transparency option, but the "make mask" button is grayed out and unclickable. The "clip" and "invert mask" options are also grayed out. I'm assuming it's because I am not grouping or merging my layers as needed. I've tried everything I can think of but no luck. Again, I need to maintain the 4 colors of the logo, so I can't use compound paths (which convert everything to a single color).
Here are the steps I took to try to create a transparency mask:
    1) Selected my finalized world graphic.
    2) Selected my texture layer (on top of the world graphic).
    3) Opened up the transparency panel, in which it won't let me create the mask?
    4) I tried different variations of my layers (grouped, ungrouped, merged, united) but no luck.
If I'm misunderstanding things, my apologies. I'm obviously doing something wrong. This is just not something I've dealt with much in Illustrator. I watched the video and see how she is able to use the transparency mask but for whatever reason I can't get it to function for my task?

  • Best way to remove clipping

What is the best way to remove clipping?  I have tried
    effects/restoration/clip restoration(process) and...
In some cases. it does not remove the distortion, although the graph of the sound wave "looks good".  I have just tried the presets.  Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Not really - and it's not really surprising that this doesn't work in all cases; in fact it's quite surprising that it works at all, in many ways. Clearly, the worse the clipping the less information there will be about missing peaks, and when the clipping gets to the point where distortion is audible, then quite a lot of reconstruction data simply isn't there for the software to make guesses about - so no cure for it is possible.
A single peak isn't too difficult to reconstruct - you have the slope of the waveform either side of it, and all you have to do is work out where the intercept points of the two slopes are, and that will effectively rebuild it - probably quite accurately. But the moment your clipped signal effectively encloses two or more peaks, especially if they are part of an extended harmonic, then reconstruction can actually make the distortion that you will inevitably get, worse. This is because the software only attempts to reconstruct the waveform from the slopes either side of the clip, (all the information it has) and any harmonic information that should have been there gets altered, to all intents and purposes - hence the increased distortion.

  • Best way to achieve fade out-in pages

I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the best way to
    build this --
I want to have some kind of lovely transition between the
pages of my website (why not; it's Flash) -- I've thought about the
    following three options:
    - old page's text flying off the right side while the new
    text flies in the right
    - old page's text fades out and a background animation (like
a turning page or something) plays before new text fades in
    - old page's text simply fades out as new page's text fades
    in
In all of them I ran into a problem -- how to tell two or
more sequential things to happen on a button press. For instance,
if there was some kind of nifty flying-away of the old page's
content, how do I tell it to do that and THEN fly-in the new page's
content? It would be a pain to simply animate every possibility,
    like page a to page b, page a to c, a to d, b to a, b to c, etc...
there has to be some way to script it prettily.
I've come across the following ideas:
    quote:
    on (release) {
    myClip.gotoAndPlay("fadeout"+pagename);
    outerClip.gotoAndPlay(1);
Where you define a 'pagename' variable for each one and have
    frames labeled accordingly
    or:
    quote:
    button02.onrelease = function() {
    movieclip01.fade(0,10);
    movieclip02.fade(100,10);
    movieclip03.fade(0,10);
    //etc, etc, etc....
where you clumsily fade out everything else possible when you
    load each one.
or I was even thinking about making the old page content
'retreating' animation for each page and trying to code it to play
that and then play the requested new page, in one long timeline.
Does anyone have a more elegant way of thinking about this?
I've looked all over for examples, but most tutorials seem to stop
short of the scripting I'd love to use. Code examples would be
highly, highly appreciated. I'm a total AS3 newbie, but willing to
learn if that's the best way.
Thanks in advance to all the brilliant people out there who
    might add their 2¢!

Thanks again NedWebs! For this thought experiment, I'm just
talking about a simple fadeout current clip - fadein new clip. But
I run into the same general question lots of times, for instance
for a current project I wanted to unload the clip, play a 'page
flip' looking transition movie, and then load in the new clip...
So are you advocating the button action as being fade out all
other movie clips (as a catch all that works no matter which is
loaded), then load requested movie clip?
How do you tell the actionscript to finish fading out 'a'
BEFORE starting to fade in 'b'? Or in the pageflip example, how do
you tell it to complete the whole fadeout, THEN play the pageflip
movie, THEN load the requested clip? If I put the actions within
the same handler or whatever, won't the instructions complete all
    at once?
Sorry for my tangly questions; I'm learning!

I have a component that will hold a Tree. In that tree are

The Observer pattern is a good one for this. Luckily, Flex's
    binding
architecture already implements this pattern. Create a model
    object that
you change a property of based on what object has been
    clicked, then bind
all the views to that property.

  • PE 13: What is the best way to cut out an unwanted segment and leave a fade-out/fade-in overlap?  Without multi-track overlaps?

I have a long video segment and want to remove unwanted segments and replace them with fade-in/fade-out transitions.  I know that I can do this between two separate video tracks by fading out Video 1 and fading in Video 2 and having the two tracks overlap during the transition.  Is there an easy way to do this on the same track?  The way I've done this before is to cut out the unwanted segment, then move the two segments to separate tracks and overlap them.
To compound the problem, I have a separate audio track for the wireless microphone I'm wearing. I need to pull that into the fade transitions.  So that's Video 1 and Audio 1 with Narration, all cut at the same time with overlapping fade-out/fade-in in the fewest steps.  Can Premiere Elements 13 handle that?

    billsbayou
Add On...I am weighing the merits of applying an audio transition directly below the video transition. Considering Crossfade's  Constant Gain or Constant Power with a forced alignment of Between Clips. According to Adobe documentation
Adobe Premiere Elements Help | Applying transitions to clips
Adobe Premiere Elements includes two audio transitions in the Crossfade category: Constant Power and Constant Gain. Though both provide fades, they differ slightly. Constant Power creates a smoother-sounding fade, while Constant Gain, though mathematically linear, often sounds abrupt.

  • Best way to handle audio out of sync?

    I've got a Panasonic PV-GS120.
    Easy Setup is set to:
    - DV Panasonic DVCPRO
    - DV-NTSC 32kHz FireWire Basic
After doing some digging, it appears the properties on my captured video show an audio rate of 32000.3. Whereas my sequence shows 32kHz even. Couple of questions:
    1) Can I stop this from happening?
    2) Here's what I did to "fix" it, but I don't know if it's best or if this will even work when I start adding multiple captured clips (could be quite a pain to do it with each clip).
I used the slip tool to offset the audio to +3. That put my video at a -3. I then selected Modify > Mark in Sync to get them aligned.
So all looks great, but dreading the thought of doing this every time, for every clip. As I understand it, this only applies to the timeline portion and not the actual clip as represented in the bin. Meaning, I can't do it just one time. I would have to do it every time I add a portion to the timeline. Ugh.
    So in summary:
    1) How can I stop this from happening?
    2) Am I handling it in the most efficient way (if I can't prevent it from happening?)
    Thanks.

Well, albeit very coincidental, it appears that the problem is actually with my camera. I say coincidental because this just started happening at the same time I bought FCE and started using it. But, I am able to now record a segment (2 minutes or so), play it back through the camera, and choppy audio will start to emerge. I have changed audio settings and even used a couple new tapes, but it is still occurring. So, time to get a new recorder, it would appear.
I'm not too upset though because I learned a lot more about FCE and video capture settings through the process. thanks for everyone's help!

  • What's the best way to cut annoying mid-range frequencies?

Does anybody know how to eliminate/cut mid-range frequencies that cause the speakers to "buzz"? Hi-cut and low-cut filters don't help much.
    Thanks
    Anya

hi, anya, how is your cd going?
there are a number of reasons for spiked upper mids.
inferior conversion, inferior monitors, small square rooms, inferior mic/mic-pre.
i heard your original demos when you posted them here, so i'm guessing it's your speakers, as i didn't hear that much wrong with the demo over my monitors.
the region of frequencies you are refering to are what superior gear addresses.
check out the "airwindows plugin' by chrisj. (kagi-airwindows plug-ins)
he has some fee ones which i'm now using a lot.
his commercial ones are well priced.
i have noticed quite a sweetening of the "presence range", which is where your problem is, using his channel and channel eq.
i like his stuff and will buy some more soon.
also try sonalksis' eq, it's very sweet sounding and subtle.
the udder cause of "buzz" could be sub bass overdrive, ie: too much bass that your speakers cannot handle and is making them vibrate. this sort of bass boost does nother for your mix except subtract from its headroom/dynamics.
again, this is due, generally, to using headphones or small bookshelfs to mix on.
    best, david r.

  • Best way to bring clips over from iMovie?

    Greetings,
I’m stuck with iMovie as my only way to capture from my camcorder; it or my Firewire jacks or something’s gotten flaky and only iMovie will see the camera. SO...any thoughts on the least painful way to bring the clips into FCP6? Got FCEHD, too, which I’ve been using so far, but I want to use FCP...
    Thanks for any ideas!
    dc

Last night I finally upgraded my G5 to 10.4.6 and since then, I have not been able to get Final Cut Studio 1, Final Cut Express OR Final Cut Pro 3 to "see" my camcorder which it did quite well before I upgraded my system software. FCP will control the camera but when I click on capture, it says no device is selected. When I go to AV Setup it shows my firewire as missing.
The problem isn't the firewire cable or my Canon camcorder. There is obviously a conflict between 10.4.6 (and higher) and Final Cut. But that problem only seems to hold true when you have FCP installed and THEN upgrade your system software. At work I have a new computer already loaded with 10.4.10. I loaded Final Cut Studio 2 on it and have no problems. Thank goodness the problem is here at home and not at work!
I have tried trashing Final Cut (preferences, application, and receipts) and reinstalling. No good. I'm going to try trashing QuickTime and reinstalling and see if that works. If not, then I don't know what to do.
We shouldn't have to import through iMovie. There is obviously a bug between OS 10 and FCP that Apple needs to find and correct. Please!!!! Or at least help us find a work around.

  • What's the best way to save clips for general viewing on the web?

I am new to iMovie, but not to Macs or file formats.
I have taken some video of kittens at a local cat shelter, hoping to post the clips at the shelter's website in efforts to get the kittens adopted.
I managed to work through iMovie myself, saving the clips so that the person responsible for the website can post them. I first saved them as .mov files - the web person can view them, but others cannot. (They are all using IBM-compatibles) She is trying to get them to launch from an html page. So I tried saving them as .wmv files, but the little fade-outs I placed at the ends of the clips were truncated... the fade-ins were there, but not the fade-outs.
The video started out very good quality, and I would like to retain as much of that quality as possible, while of course keeping them small and manageable. But first of all, I need the web person to be able to post them, and then need everyone to be able to view them.
Am I asking too much, given there are so many ibms out there?

you ask for a solution of a very common problem: the universal video format...
due to sheer market power, .avi and .wmv are the most used standards.
avi is just a container, little supported on Mac; you can choose it as an export option in iM, but it offers just a few compressors (dv/bmp = nice looking, but large, cinepak=small but ugly...)
for export to .wmv, you need, as mish mentioned, to buy a plug-in from flip4mac, we do read enthusiastic responses on that product... but, Mac-users need additional software to read these files (the free plug-in from flip4mac or the free wmv player for Mac from Microsoft)
RealPlayer needs costly encoders, and again special players...
a nice option is .flv, flash-video... needs investment into FlashMX, $$$$ or shareware as VisualHub...
finally, which works for me and my few PC friends, is usage of mp4... without .mov container; choose "mpeg4" in the expert options... your friend has to open that file once in Windows MediaPlayer manually once and save it again, to get rid of some meta-data "Quicktime needed" (which isn't true)... some PCs open these mp4 by double-click, some PCs demand for QT4Windows.. but, as said, manually (open dialog from within WMP) these mp4s are compatible..
better pic results are earned with that little free app iSquint, I LOVE to recommend, it has an excellent algorithm...
sorry, lots of tech blabla... difficult issue...

  • Best way to export clips with effects, like project manager

First of all I would like to say hello to everybody, cause this is my first post, thanks in advance for your help.
    The problem:
I'm running adobe premiere pro cs06 on a mac and what I want to do seems simple but is very difficult. I import material from an Alexa camera, putting all the clips to the timeline and add some effects to the clips, too.
Now I want to export all changed clips with the same codec, filename and timecode, just like I can do, when I use the project manager to consolidate my files.
So the goal is an easy way to add effects and export same as source?!
    Again thank you very much
    Cheers
    Bird

Thank you for your answers so far,
First I dont want to export to the arriraw format, what I want to export to is prores444. The reason why is simply because there are some effekts that might speed up my workflow, let me explain:
Most jobs I do the following, I work as a DIT and colorcorrect footage from lots of cameras on set and export them to any kind of codec using davinci resolve.
The most time consuming progess is the neutralizing of all the different camera models..
With plugins like re:match from re:vision it could save me some time, due to its good auto correction, which would give me a good starting point for my further colorcorrection.
But in order to be faster than my normal way, I need to have some auto or same as source export funktion. Although when the clips match the original metadata I will have no problems in the later stages of my workflow.

  • Best way to update 8 out of10 million records

    Hi friends,
I want to update a table 8 million records of a table which has 10 millions records, what could be the best strategy if the table has a BLOB column with 600GB worth of data. BLOB itself is 550GB.  I am not updating the BLOB column.
Usually with non-BLOB data i have tried doing "CREATE TABLE new_table as select <do the update "here"> from old_table;" method .
How should i approach this one?

    @Mark D Powell
To give you a background my client faced this problem  a week ago , This is part of a daily cleanup activity .
Right now i don't have the access to it due to security issue . I could only take few AWR reports and stats when the access window was opened. So basically next time when i get the access i want to close the issue once and for all
    Coming to your questions:
So what is wrong with just issuing an update to update all 8 Million rows?
In a previous run , of a single update with full table scan in the plan with no parallel degree it started reading from UNDO(current_obj=-1 on event "db file sequential read" wait event) and errored out after 24 hours with tablespace full on the tablespace which contains the BLOB data(a separate tablespace)
To add to the problem redo log files were sized too less , about 50MB only .
The wait events (from DBA_HIST_ACTIVE_SESS_HISTORY )for the problematic sql id shows
    -  log file switch (checkpoint incomplete) and log file switch completion as the events comprising 62% of the wait events
    -CPU 29%.
    -db file sequential read 6%.
-direct path read 2% and others contributing a little.
30 % of the samples "db file sequential read" had a current_obj#=-1 & p1 showing undo file id.
Is there any concurrent DML against this table? If not, the parallel DML would be an option though it may not really be needed.
I think there was in the previous run and i have asked to avoid in the next run.
How large are the base table rows?
    AVG_ROW_LEN is 227
How many indexes are effected by the update if any?
The last column of the primary key column is the only column to be updated ( i mean used in the "SET" clause of the update)
Do you expect the update will cause any row migration?
Yes i think so because the only column which is going to be updated is the same column on which the table is partitioned.
Now if there is a lot of concurrent DML on the table you probably want to use pl/sql so you can loop through the data issuing a commit every N rows so as to not lock other concurrent sessions out of the table for too long a period of time.  This may well depend on if you can write a driving cursor that can be restarted in the event of interruption and would skip over rows that have already been updated.  If not you might want to use a driving table to control the processing.
Right now to avoid UNDO issue i have suggested to use PL/SQL approach & have asked increasing the REDO size to atleast 10 times more.
My big question after seeing the wait events profile for the session is:
Which was the main issue here , redo log size or the reading from UNDO which hit the update statement. The buffer gets had shot to 600 million , There are only 220k blocks in the table.
