Best way to do a light glow highlight through a graphic in FCP?

Best way to do a light glow highlight through a graphic in FCP?

Hi -
Lots of ways to do this, here is the method I use- gives lots of control:
Place/edit your graphic on the timeline. Do any motion keyframing you need to do.
Select the clip on the timeline and copy it.
Place the copy directly above the original +2 tracks higher+ (leaving an empty track between them).
Click on the clip you've copied and type Shift-A to mark In and mark Out on the duration of the clip.
Targeting the empty track between the two graphics, go to the viewer and from the Generator button (the button on the lower right of the viewer with the "A" on it) select Render > Highlight. That will bring a soft highlight shape into the viewer. Edit that to the empty track between the two graphics. Don't worry about what things look like at this point.
Now go to the top graphic and from the effects tab, apply Video Filters > Image Control > Brightness and Contrast and also apply Video Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur to you clip on the timeline.
Double click on that clip, and in the viewer select the Filters Tab. Adjust the the filters to get a nice soft glowing bright image of your graphic.
Once you have that, move back t the timeline and Control - click on the +top graphic+ on your timeline and from the drop down menu, choose Composite Mode > Travel Matte - Luma.
As soon as you select it, you will see that the highlight shape in the middle track in now cutting a matte shape for your glowing soft graphic on the upper track.
Now double click on the Highlight clip on the middle track. In the viewer, using the control tab, rotate the bar, change it's width and shape to your liking. To make it sweep across the graphic, switch to the Motion Tab and keyframe a move with the highlight bar starting off to the graphic, moving across it, and ending off the graphic on the other side.
Depending on the horsepower of your computer, you may have to render to see this effect playback while you are working - you will definitely need to render when you are done. The nice thing about doing the highlight this way is that it gives you a lot of control over the apperance.
Hope this helps.

I need to color correct shots that were taped under fluorescent lighting. The ugly kind!

    Thanks in advance. Be well.

I've already gotten into a fight with the producer
for giving me such bad footage, but aside from
    quiting... whatelse can be done?
exactly what you're doing and then some. the three-way auto white capabilities are quite good and it'll provide a base to start from. do that first and then reapply the three way and mess around with luma, black, chroma levels. you may find after auto-white that all you need is a simple hue shift which the regular color corrector does with great aplomp.
once you get things to where you think you like them, duplicate the sequence and find a scene you like the best. place a marker. other scenes in the same location with the same fluorescent lighting, place more markers - i'll tell you why in a second - and then apply another three-filter to use the match hue functions and that may dial you in even closer. another tool great for this is G Super Levels from graeme nattress in his filter set one.
when i match cameras for live shows, i have the benefit of routers to toggle the imagery through my monitors and scopes. no router exists in fcp but if you learn the keyboard shortcuts for navigating to and from markers, you can watch the waveforms while you toggle between scenes which will tell you were to surgically perform more correction.
document your time and submit a huge invoice to this producer for providing you with this crap. you can't perform miracles without getting paid!
    good luck, post back.
if you need further help, you can email me offlist with some problem stills and i'll see what i can do.

  • Best way (folio/bounding) to display a printed portfolio? (Graphic Design question)

    Hi all,
Apologies if this isnt posted in the correct forum (but I wasnt able to find any mainstream graphic design forums, I know there is ultrashock but that's more flash based, if anyone could point me to some would be great.)
Any how my question is what is the best portfolio type (paper/binded folder/display sheets) to display printed graphic design work in to potential clients or employers etc?
I had been using protective sheets, but then a client of mine showed me what someone else had done for them and it was displayed in a huge thick A3 bound portfolio (you couldnt see or tell how each peice of paper was bound to the edge). I'm thinking that's what I really need and really professional type looking folio presented like that, but I don't know of what you would call that type of folio/bounding etc.
    Any help would be great

I prefer to do wire-o because you can change the pages out as your portfolio changes. I also like to have vellum slip sheets in-between because it looks more professional as well has assure that the prints do not stick together. I prefer to go with printed plastic transparent covers with an emboss as well as foil stampings with double hit blacks consisted of gloss UV coatings in patterns of textiles, but that gets costly.
Other then that, I think you will have more success creating an on line portfolio. Most people don't have the time to look at hard copies, but it's good to have a back up hard copy for face to face situations.

Hi, I don’t have too much time to research this one (sorry if its already been posted, I’m in a rush!) .. but I’m editing using ProRes LT on my timeline. I have a standard definition DVD and need to extract footage form it so that I can edit it into my timeline.
Without using expensive tools, is there a recommended method to doing this and still retain maximum quality (or as near to maximum quality?)

  • Best way to draw thousands of graphic objects on the screen

Hello everybody, I'm wanting to develop a game where at times thousands of graphic objects are displayed on-screen. What better way to do this in terms of performance and speed?
I have some options below. Do not know if the best way is included in these options.
1 - Each graphical object is displayed on a MovieClip or Sprite.
2 - There is a Bitmap that represents the game screen. All graphical objects that are displayed on screen have your images stored in BitmapData. Then the Bitmap that represents the game screen copies for themselves the BitmapData of graphical objects to be screened, using for this bitmapData.copyPixels (...) or BitmapData.draw  (...). The Bitmap that represents the screen is added to the stage via addChild (...).
3 - The graphical objects that are displayed on screen will have their images drawn directly on stage or in a MovieClip/Sprite added to this stage by addChild (...). These objects are drawn using the methods of the Graphics class, as beginBitmapFill and beginFill.
Recalling that the best way probably is not one of these 3 above.
I really need this information to proceed with the creation of my game.
Please do not be bothered with my English because I'm using Google translator.
Thank you in advance any help.

Thanks for the information kglad. =)
Yes, my game will have many objects similar in appearance.
Some other objects will use the same image stored, just in time to render these objects is that some effects (such as changing the colors) will be applied in different ways. But the picture for them all is the same.
Using the second option, ie, BitmapDatas, which of these two methods would be more efficient? copyPixels or draw?
Thank you in advance any help. =D

  • Best way to adjust lighting in video clips

Is there a "best" way to adjust lighting conditions within a video clip?  I have a clip with terrible lighting conditions and cannot reshoot the scenario.
While I don't expect a perfect solution, I am hoping that there are better approaches than the ones I've been using.  If recommendations include third-party plugins, I would appreciate hearing about them, as well.
I have been using the gamma corrector and luma corrector filters.  The gamma corrector adjustments in greater values, but seems to only work in discrete steps.  So, if the gamma needs to be stepped up or down within a clip, there is a very visible and sometimes jarring visual effect.  The luma corrector seems to only be able to increase the brightness level (through a combination of all 5 or 6 variables including brightness, gain, gamma, etc.) before the clip looks washed out.
    Thanks,
    Steve

All CC and Grading should start with "Levels"
You could then go into 3-Way Color Correction.
You could also look at a more powerful CC such as Colorista 2

  • Best way to do a news-style person highlight effect

as in when there is a large group of people but one is highlighted by an oval, sometimes in a contrasting colour.
would the best way be duplicate the clip on a higher track and cut out a mask shape, and lighten the underneath clip? what filter do i use to put on a solid oval outline?
    cheers all
    Hugh

You really don't even need to duplicate the clip if you use Andy's Region blur from the link below.
Just apply Andy's blur set it for your oval, make the appropriate adjustments to tint, feather, and positioning and then simply Invert the blur

  • Best way to fix lighting

What would you guys recommend as the best way to fix a darkened image? i.e. - adjust brightness/contrast or gamma levels, etc. I'm sure this changes depending on the image, but just seeing if there's a general rule of thumb. Would it be best to leave the images untouched in premiere and export them to After Effects and adjust the lighting levels there? Thanks for any help.

  • Best way to make a highlight movie?

I am making a highlight movie of our bb season. I currently have 9 games that are about 10 gb each. I would like to take short clips from the games and put into a new movie of highlights. I am wondering the best way to do that. I did two games and I see that when I copy a six seconds from a 3 min clip into the highlight movie it copies all 3 min into the new movie. This will get incredibly big as I would like to take about 15-20 very short clips from each game. Is there a way to just copy part of a clip into another movie without getting the whole clip.
If not, what is the best way to create an imovie out of short clips from other imovies.
    Thanks.

you stumbled into the 'non distructure' feature of iM .. when you copy/paste 3secs into another project, the whole import, from which these 3secs are originated, get copied..
    use this workflow:
    highlight clip in timeline
export/Quicktime/Full Quality.. check box 'selected clips only' ...
the new file is the 3secs only.. drag that/import that into your 'master edit' ..
    what I would do...
    import 1 game..
do a very rough cut .. no 'frame precision' just a selection of scenes, plus 10-20secs 'beef' around it..
    again, Export/QT/Full Quality ..
delete project, create a new one..
    repeat for game 2-9
import these roughcuts into your 'master edit', finish&polish the finale scenes there ...

  • Best way to light photos for printing

    Hi All,
I previously posted on the forum on what to do if my prints are too dark. After getting helpful feedback from other forum users and confirming with the pringint company, I made sure that my monitor is calibrated to 90 lumens. Now am wondering the best way to lighten the photos for export (as I can't see the impact of gamma like in the print dialog.)
    Backgound:
I setup my macbook pro to get the correct color calibration to print correctly. (I am exporting to sRGB colorspace to send to the online printing company). After calibrating my laptop lcd, it is apparent (by sending a few test photos) that the prints still come out a little too dark. As I am working on a laptop, I am limited to how much the screen vs exported photos can be adjusted. Therefore, I am looking on the best way to retouch the photos for exporting. Also note that I am using apple aperture.
Which is the best way to lighten up the photos (or a group of images that are taken under different lighting situations exposures, that would also keep my workflow streamlined?
    1. Adjust the images on export using a gamma adjustment. (easiest to implement but since aperture only shows gamma adjustments on printing and not exporting, setting this correctly will be a guess.)
    2. Use a curves adjustment to lighten the photo. (Might be the easiest to implement and see the results but need to create separate version for viewing on screen vs printing which isn't hard but adds a layer complexity).
    3. Use some of the exposure/brightness/showdow recovery sliders. (Unsure of the best sliders to use and each photo needs separate adjustments. In addition, like 2 above, separate versions would be need to display on screen vs printing).
    4. (Other ideas?).
    I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • What is the best way to kill/stop a data load?

    Hi.
What is the best way to kill/stop a data load?
I have a data load from my QA R/3 system that is extracting 115.000.000+ records. The problem is that the selection in the function module used in the data source does not work, and the problem was not detected because of the nature of the data on the development system.
I could kill processes owned by my background user (on both R/3 and BW) but I risk killing other loads, and sometimes the job seems to restart if I just try to kill processes. If I remove transactional RFCs in SM58 the load does not terminate; I only skip one or more datapackages. I have also tried to change the QM-status in the monitor to red, but that does not stop the load either...
So isn't there a nice fool-proof way of stopping a dataload?
    Best regards,
    Christian Frier

    Hi,
There r 2 ways to kill the job.
One is using transation RSMO locate the job and display the status tab double click on the yellow light that is shown on the line total, a pop will come 'set overall status ' is displayed select the desired status that is red and save it. Then return to the monitor page and select the header tab double ckick on the data target right click and then goto 'manage',there should be request sitting there probably with yellow lights , highlight the line with the faulty request click the delete button then click refresh button.
Second is goto SM37 and click on the active selection and enter the jobname and then click excute the particulr job should appear highlight the jobname then click on the stop iconthat appears on the taskbar( 3 rd from left)
    hope it is clear.

  • Best Way to Stack 2d and 3d in a Composite

Hey everyone, it seems I'm really on a 3d binge with Photoshop CS6. It's just a blast! Anyway, I'm looking to figure out the best way to stack 2d and 3d items together in the same document, and maximize the editibility...
I'm working on a digital room setting, and I have part of the room in 3d and part in 2d. So, for example, the walls, ceiling, floor, table, chairs and corner hutch are 3d, but the regular hutch and buffet server are in 2d.
    - The table and chairs need to be in the foreground
    - The regular hutch and server are behind the table and chairs
    - The corner hutch needs to be behind all other pieces of furniture
So, you may be catching on by now to my little dilemna... I want all the 3D items to have the same lighting and reflect off one another, however, I need the 2d layers to somehow fit "inbetween" the 3d objects. The simple question is, how can this be done? Is there a way to mask the foreground 3D objects so that they appear to be in from of the 2D objects? My only current solution is this:
    - Move the whole 3D layer (the scene layer) all the way to the back
    - Make the final decision on the position of the table and chairs
    - Hide all other meshes in the scene besides the table and chairs
    - Render, so the edges are clean
    - Load the newly rendered 3D layer as a selection (which loads the table and chairs only)
    - Either create a new layer from the selection of the rendered 3D layer, or mask the 3D layer so that the table and chairs appear to be in the foreground
I didn't anticipate this post being this long, so I apologize,... but as you can assume, the method above means I can no longer edit/reposition/scale the 3D at all, so if there's a better way to stack these room elements I would be extremely grateful to whoever knows how!
    Thanks!
    Andy

First, I was wrong about layers needing to be hidden to prevent their appearance being included in a new Postcard. I misunderstood something that happened when working with a 3D document a while ago.
Materials support transparency/opacity. A material has an opacity control that can use a texture. The material opacity percentage is multiplied by the opacity of the texture.
When a Postcard is created, its default material's opacity control will contain an instance of the texture that's in the diffuse control, which is a PSB file containing the 2D layer (pixels, Shape, Smart Object or Group) from which the Postcard was created.
Here is an example. Two solid Pyramid meshes and a Postcard of a cloud Shape layer:
The Shape layer from which the Postcard was created is in the document that can be opened by picking Edit in the dropdown of the buttons highlighted above:

  • Damaged magsafe charger still working (light glows even when not plugged into MBP) - safe to use?

    Hello,
This is going to sound ridiculous but i accidentally let the end of magsafe 85w charge fall into a bowl with some melted ice cream left in it..... i didn't notice at first until i saw it lying with the charging light glowing despite not being connected to the macbook. i turned it off at the mains and cleaned it out as best i could with a q-tip and a toothbrush to try and get away any excess - there still appears to be some balck residue around the pins, im not sure if this is from the ice cream, or something to do with the electronics being fried in some way.
Anyway, apart from an occasion when i was cleaning it and there was a small spark and a very small stream of smoke (almost unnoticeable) as I initially forgot to unplug it from the mains , it seems to be working somewhat normally again. it charges my macbook and the light turns off when its disconnected but it changes from orange to green randomly sometimes when it is connected.
My main question is, is this dangerous to my macbook to use in this state and if so how? i intend to replace it eventually regardless but at the moment i cant afford to pay the steep £65 price tag for a new charger.
i understand that the charger may eventually stop working but i dont want it to short out my macbook or something - apologies if any of the steps taken above seem idiotic, i really dont know what im doing in the area of fried electronics.....
    thanks for any help.

So long as the charger is NOT connected to a AC wall outlet, soaking it in penetrating oil will not harm it.
    mattmackay wrote:
is the electronics cleaner you are referring to the kind that uses a straw to expel pressurised air into the device to clean it?
Some do come in that configuration but I doubt that you can use the 'pressure' to your advantage.  The objective is to get the liquid behind the pins and I think you can only do that by soaking it in a container that  is well sealed.  The liquid otherwise will evaporate quickly.
Understand that this is what I would try to do if I were well up the Amazon River with no other alternative.  A new charger guarantees that it will work.  This may not.
