Best way to format text: HTML tags or CSS?

Probably a silly question, but...  I can format the text within a div using CSS Styles (Font-size, Font-Style, Font-Weight, etc.) or by applying an HTML tag, such as <H1>. (Or, I guess a combination where I use CSS to format the tag, but let's skip that one for now.)
In general, is one approach better than the other? Thanks!

+1 Nancy. The specific tags exist today simply because of the meaning it adds to your site at the backend - especially for search engines to understand what's going on with your site. And since search engines dont 'see' your page, but 'read' your code, these tags are the only hope for them to figure out what your site contains and how to place it on their results.
On a sidenote, the first method of using inline styles is time-consuming and results in larger filesizes since you'll end up doing it for each div tag. The second method is much simpler as you can style each individual tag in CSS and re-use them anywhere you want on your site.

  • What is the best way to add text to an image

    I used the draw ap div to add text to an image.  will that cause any problems?  If so, what is the best way to add text to an image?  Thanks!

    APDivs will kill your design unless you fully understand the css behind the scenes and plan accordingly. They really are completely unnecessary in the vast majority of situations.
    An easy way to add "web text over an image" would be to use the background-image attribute in css for a standard <div> tag, then just add the text within that same <div>.
    Something like this in the css (if you are using a 300x300 pixel image)...
    #yourdiv {
         background-image:url(yourpic.jpg);
         width:300px;
         height:300px;
    And then this in the html...
    <div id="yourdiv">Your text here</div>
    You would then position the <div> using css margins, floats and padding. Using position:absolute (APDivs) is typically something that will blow your design to pieces if the viewer changes their browser settings.

  • Best way to handle text files in OD10g

    We have a requirement to store reports in text format into a database field, to be able to view the reports, and to print them if desired using Forms 10g. What is the best way to handle this?
    - define the field in the database as clob or blob?
    - if CLOB is the choice, what tools to use to upload CLOBs to the database (since webutil transfer is for blob only)?
    - in Forms 10g, can one use the Forms data type LONG for CLOB?
    - can you do Forms search on clob and blob fields?
    - how can reports that are stored in fields be viewed without first downloading to the client workstation?
    - in Forms 10g, what is the best way to view text files residing in local PCs: "host notepad myFile"?
    Thanks much for your reply!

    Take a deep breath. Relax. All is fine.
    iDVD does not look at the size of your video file, it looks at the length. iDVD can accomodate up to 2 hours of movie
    iDVD gives you different options depending on the length of your movie. Although I won't agree with your friend about reducing the length of your movie to 15 minutes, if you could trim out a few minutes to get it under an hour that setting in iDVD (Best Performance though the new version may have renamed it) gives you the best quality. Still, any iDVD setting will give you good quality even at 64 minutes
    In FCE export as Quicktime Movie NOT any flavour of Quicktime Conversion. Select chapter markers if you have them. If everything is on one system unchecked the Make Movie Self Contained button. Drop the QT file into iDVD

  • What is the best way to display text?

    Hi,
    I am developing a full screen presentation. I like to know which is the best way to display text with different styles and fonts.
    When i use JLabel, i have to use HTML. But the presentation is not good as it does not have anti-alias property. Also i want the background to be seen behind the text. Note that all the text in a paragraph is not of same style. I want some words to be in different color and style.
    Thanks,
    Mathan

    It works alos with JTextPane:
    Try this :
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class MyTextPane extends JTextPane  {
         public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
              Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g;
              g2d.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING, RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_ON);
              super.paintComponent(g2d);
         public static void main(String[] args) {
              JFrame f = new JFrame("test");
              f.getContentPane().add(new JScrollPane(new MyTextPane()));
              f.setBounds(200,200,300,400);
              f.setVisible(true);
    }Denis

  • What is the best way to manipulate text?

    What is the best way to manipulate text in Photoshop?  Let's say I need to edit an "A" and I want to stretch out the bottom corners of the letter, while not moving the upper portion (wide bottom, skiny top)... what is the best way to do this?  I know the "skew" function somewhat moves corners, but I want to take the binding boxes (while in the skew function) and move them individually so it doesn't affect another corner. Is this possible (or am I just crazy?!?!)?

    Not sure I get all the nuances of what you want, but have you tried invoking Free Transform, (CTRL+T) then holding down CTRL while clicking/dragging a corner handle?

  • Best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

    best way to format my 16GB flash drive for Mac and PC transferring large power point files?

    format flash drive in Exfat for transferring files between Mac and Pc.
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
    Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
    You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
    Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
    To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
    For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
    Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
    AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
    You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
    HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
    Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
    To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
    You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
    Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
    Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
    AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
    You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • Best way to format a second hard drive in a MacBook Pro?

    I put a SSD in my MacBook Pro and I am wondering what is the best way to format the hard drive that i am putting in the place of the optical drive. I could set it put in raid configuration but I'm pretty sure that it takes the speed from the slower drive. Making my upgrade pointless. Should I put the hard drive in and format it to Mac OS extended (journaled). Is this my best option. Will i only be able to put applications on the second hard drive or will i only be able to put on files such as media, word docs ect.?

    Hello,
    I read some of your responces to other computer issues. Do you have any thoughts that may help my situation. I posted this earlier. I try to use my OS X HD to reinstall but I only get so far and I am told install can't go any further.
    Detailed Discription;
    Everything is running-phizz-black screen
    Start button-enter password-gray bar at bottom of screen-
    Gray bar fills 1/4 - computer shuts off
    So I looked around on wifes computer and find a few sequences to try and fix.
    didn't work.
    So I am here now after accessing reinstall  from my os x disc and a couple other discs to choose from.
    Nothing is working-need help
    Past history;
    from the begining my mac never carried a charge. Then it stopped charging completely.
    I just lived with it-but now this-christ man it ticks me off.
    Anyways I would appreciate all the hel I could get, thanks
    Thank You

  • What is the best way to format a novel w headers  w/o changing the ...

    what is the best way to format a novel w headers w/o changing the following pages. I've used Microsoft office initially, but publishing house uses a program called word perfect. I find that I have too many blank white pages no matter what i do! Have to fix pagination as well...Paul

    When you start you are offered templates under 2 categories "Word Processing" and "Layout", choose wisely.
    For header and footers yes, you will have to:
    +Menu > Insert > Section break+ at the bottom of the last page of the section you wish to preserve.
    Then you can change the next section and the 2 will stay different.
    Please read the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf, you need to know a lot more than this if your novel is ever to hit the streets.

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

    What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

    Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
    Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
    Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

  • Best way to view Text files from Mac on iPhone 4?

    What is the Best way to view Text files (loaded) from my Mac onto my iPhone 4?
    Will any of the "readers" (e.g. Kindle, Kobo) allow me to put my own text files onto my iPhone and read them easily?
    Thanks

    I actually purchased GoodReader because it is easy to transfer files without iTunes.  I dislike the file sharing through iTunes.   You can use a Mac or PC.  Once I was in the app I clicked the "Wi-Fi" symbol which brings me to "WiFi-transfer."  It will show this --
    "WiFi status: ON
    Use one of the following addresses exactly as you see them
    1. IP-address: http://192.168.0.98:8080 <-- Local LAN address the iPhone is broadcasting on.
    2. Bonjour-address http://Myname-iPhone.local:8080"
    All you have to do is type one of those addresses into your browser. (Safari, etc.)
    It will take you to a page that has iPhone Connection and a list of options.  You can either create a new directory within the application or use an existing one to upload a text file.  It's rather simple, you just select "Choose a file to upload" > Select your file > Press upload > Start the app and see your text/pdf/whatever file.
    You can also connect to a server to download a text file, browse the web, or enter a url.  I see it also has an ICloud folder which I'm not sure if it integrates with Apple's iCloud or not, I think it does.  I'm not affliated with the app and I'm not saying you have to buy it, I'm just a happy user.
    If you don't want to buy this app let me know I'll keep looking for a free or cheaper one for you if you want.

  • Best way to format an internal drive for storage

    Hello,
    I have an early 09 8 core Mac Pro running both 10.9.3 and windows 7 (boot camp 5.1). I have two extra 2TB WD SATA drives I like to install for video storage. What would be the best way to format the drives for both OS. exFAT or FAT32. I understand both format have several limitations. Just wondering which format is the better way to go for video storage and working back and forth with video editing programs on either OS platform. I normally copy the videos or files from the storage drive to the main drive when working with the programs and viewing. Any input would be great, thanks. z

    I would NOT ever use exFAT, not when Paragon Software has excellent and supported NTFS driver for Mac OS X (they have equally good HFS+ for Windows). Using both and both work seamless and invisibly. And inexpensive.
    I access from Windows and Mac to a common set of storage data drives in both NTFS as well as HFS.

  • Import(insert) formatted text(HTML) into document

    Hi guys, I have faceed with folowing problem:
    how to insert into text frame formatted text ?
    At Indesign desktop version this feature was able through pasting HTML from clippboard with appropriate settings of clippboard preferences. But at server version there is no such function.
    I have also invesigated XML import:  you can set up text and paragraph styles and map them with tags but this technique doesnt support nested styles for instance if you have <b><i>xxx</i></b> and appropriate styles "b" and "i" i will be applied to "xxx".
    So I need to insert html as it did clipboard pasting.
    Any thoughts ?

    Questions:
    1. What version of SQL Server are you using?
    2. Are you required to use a specific DTS package or do you simply need to import data from a file to a table?  You might also consider using the bcp utility or, if you are using 2005 or newer, integration services.
    3. Is the uploading of files and the import of data a manual process or is it automated?  Is there a user uploading one file at a time to your server or do you receive files in batches.  Can you describe the work flow?
    You might try the following if you are required to use DTS:
    1. Upload your text file with CFFILE, putting in the directory expected by your DTS package.
    2. Rename the file to the name required by your DTS package
    3. Use CFEXECUTE to run the DTS package by calling dtsrun at the command line.

  • Best way to edit text in Motion 5?

    I am using Motion 5 and a Template (from Motion VFX), and had trouble editing the text in this one text field. I couldn't just click in the Canvas and edit the text; it would just create another text box.
    I am trying to get out of the habit of just clicking on the canvas, and I want new ways to edit text.
    I searched and I found one way. I would use the "Find and Replace" tool (Command and F), and then search for the text string, and have it edit it. Is this the best way in everyone's opinion? Are there other ways I can edit text fields? Any tips?
    Thanks,
    Craig G from DC

    Select the Text "layer" in the layers column; select the Text tab in the inspector; select the Format button at the top and change the Text in the Text field at the bottom.
    BTW, that text field is publishable for FCPX from the disclosure triangle that appears when you mouse over that space with the "Text" header.

  • Is there a way to format text in Small Caps?

    I have just installed Photoshop Elements 11 for Windows and am wondering if there is a setting to format text in small caps?

    No, PSE doesn't recognize small caps as an option. You can do all caps, but small caps only happen by accident. For some reason it's not uncommon for the text tool to decide on its own only to do small caps, but there's no way to make it happen at will, at least not without an add-on like elements+ from simple photoshop. (There may be others that include small caps, but that's the only I can think of right now.)
