Beta SP via SDI?

I have a multi-Betacam format Sony J30SDI player which has SDI outputs and also Firewire, S-Video and composite analogue outs as well.
It is normally used to capture from Digital Betacam via SDI into an AJA Io. If I needed to capture some Betacam SP footage using this deck, would it be OK to bring that in via SDI as there are no component analogue outputs on this deck?
If so, I presume the most appropriate capture preset would be the Io SDI 8-bit uncompressed and not the 10 bit we use for DigiBeta?
Any advice would be most welcome, thanks.

Yes you can capture SP tapes over SDI from a J30 with no problems. In fact the J30 probably has better dropout compensation than an 1800 or 75. As for capture settings, if you are working in a 10-bit timeline, capture at 10-bit. For an 8-bit timeline, capture at 8-bit.

  • Monitoring 2k footage via SDI, Premiere CC, Decklink Studio

    Hello all,
    System specs:
    MacPro 4,1 2.26Ghz 8 core, 32 GB RAM, OSX 10.8.4
    Adobe CC
    Resolve 9.1.5
    FSI LM-2461W
    BM Decklink Studio 2
    BM Desktop Video 9.7.7
After searching the forums, I'm here seeking the collective wisdom of the Adobe CC user base.
I'm working in a 2048x854 timeline and I'd like to be able to monitor the timeline in Premiere on my external monitor with a Decklink Studio via SDI. No flavor of 2K sequence preset seems to work. If I take my 2048x854 timeline and nest it in a 1920x1080 timeline, boom, the image shows up and plays back on my external monitor.
Both Resolve and After Effects are capable of sending a signal to my monitor that will play back, while still working in 2048x854 timelines and comps.
Thoughts? Workarounds? Both AE and Resolve work, which makes me think this is a Premiere thing, like it isn't capable of downsampling to 1080, but I could be wrong.
    Thanks for your time.

Yep, that's what I figured.  Kinda lame, considering the other two thirds of my post workflow, After Effects and Resolve, seem to handle this without a hitch.
Should have spent the extra $300 for the Decklink 4K, although I have a feeling I would still be in a similar situation, given that my monitor supports 2048x1080 and I'm working at 2048x854, not to mention that it leaves me high and dry if I need to work with 4k in Premiere.
The workaround would be to work in a 2048x1080 timeline, but since we're working with different flavors of resolution, 1080 Phantom and 2K, 4K and 5K Epic footage with all different kinds of resizing, reframing and cropping, I would need a 2.40 matte over the edit/finish timeline to have some sense of the actual framing and then either nesting the sequence in a 2048x854 sequence or copy and pasting the final piece from the 2048x1080 timeline to the 2048x854 timeline.  Neither of these options is very appealing to me when I could just be working natively in 2048x854 and skip all of this, like I am with AE and Resolve.
I'm liking most of what Premiere is offering, but there are some details that make me think the people engineering this software don't actually use it.  Like needing to have the Program monitor in focus for the "create still" key command to work or some key commands that should always work, regardless of what window is in focus, like toggling targeting.  For some inexplicable reason, the "Show in Finder" command does not work in the timeline.  It works in the project tab and "Show in Project" works in the timeline.
Anyway, off to the Adobe feature request/bug report site, which incidentally crashed my browser and lost my request the last time I tried to submit one.
    Good times.

  • Timecode via sdi from timeline

I am a bit frudtrated seeing that i can not get timecode from timeline out via sdi to my pdw-hd1500. In fcp7 you can crash record straight to xdcam disc and the timecode comes right through the sdi. anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!

I already have contacted them beforte you and they said from what they understand, premiere does not send timecode via sdi and they even had 3 technicians check into it and could not get it to work. So i'm at a standstill- with now both sides pointing fingers, and no resolution.- Are there any settings i may have missed? I had a bad feeling about getting answers on this issue. Is there anyway you may also make the "should be" a confirmed yes. I appreciate your attentio, time, and help in this matter. I am a recent adobe user, switching from fcp7 and avid previous to that. I was hoping to continue using premiere at my post house, but if this issue can not be resolved it will unfortunately be a deal beaker to our company.
    Thanks again

  • Can't Update to iOS 6.0 Beta 2 via OTA

I purchased the iOS developer license today and have been trying to update my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 beta 2 via OTA, but every time I check for the update, it says that 5.1.1 is the latest version.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks in Adance.

You can NOT Update from 5.1.1 to 6.0 Using OTA! You need to use the .DMG File that is alailable to Paid Developers Only @ http://developer.apple.com/ You can however update from Beta 1 to Beta 2 using OTA. Just FYI.

  • Outputting via SDI to DigiBeta thru Blackmagic Decklink Extreme

I'm running Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 on MacOS 10.4.8. I've edited a 23.98FPS - DVCPro50 sequence. I can preview using the Decklink Extreme card fine. I can output via compenent out to a regular beta deck (UVW-1800) just fine, which is also the deck I use for monitoring while I am editing. I plug the SDI output from the decklink card into our digibeta deck (DVW-A500). I also send the audio over SDI. I see both the audio and video in my digibeta deck. If I just PLAY the sequence out, the digibeta sees and hears it fine. No problems.
This is my problem. Whenever I try to 'edit to tape' it usually starts out fine... then I get A LOT of digital drop outs / squares / digital distortion on the digibeta. They come up randomly and it also digitally distorts the audio when you play the tape back.
The digibeta deck is fine, as we use it to output via our Avid Media Composers every day...no dropouts or problems. It has to be with FCP / DeckLink Card when you try an 'edit to tape'. I've also tried a 'print to video' with the same results. Have you guys heard of this problem at all? Hopefully you have a fix for me...
    thanks.

Awesome - the Out Ref fix did it!
When I did the edit to tape I tried both insert editing and assemble editing - both ended up the same.
On a side discussion - how do you sync the FCP machine with the black burst generator? I'm still a bit new to this - what exactly does the genlock do on the Decklink Extreme card? Is this where I sync with the black burst?
I assume the digibeta deck will also get synced with the same black burst generator. Does this go into the reference input on the back?
    Thanks for your help,
    -Grant

  • Selecting "better performance" vs "better battery" via desktop icon

Several months ago, I recall being able to click on the battery icon on the top right when I'm running on battery power to allow me to select the type of battery consumption I wanted to use. I believe it was something to the effect of "better performance" and "better battery life." Now, when I click on the battery, I can not switch my power/performance preferences via the battery. Did I do something or did a software update remove this feature? How do I get it back?

Is this a Unibody MacBook Pro? It appears so, if so this setting is controlled in the Energy Saver preference pane ONLY now, because of the logout required to switch graphics processors.

  • Is "Advanced|Subscribe to Podcast..." better than via iTMS?

Am I right in thinking that if I subscribe to a podcast via the subscribe button I do not link directly to the podcast's feed but to an Apple server that redirects me to the feed, and that there is a significant delay between a podcast appearing on the feed and it's appearing on Apple's server, whereas if I subscribe manually via "Advanced|Subscribe to Podcast..." I link directly to the feed and hence get my podcasts all the sooner?
    Gosh what a long sentence.
    Gordon

    Sometimes.
Apple runs an extra review pass on XML feed files that can result in a podcast no longer updating in the store. Maybe the author adds an iTunes tag incorrectly or something like that.
Also, Apple does appear to cache some of the more popular podcasts. This does often result in a delay in seeing new podcasts compared to using a direct Subscribe URL. But it can also mean that those podcasts download much faster for you since they come from an Apple sponsored location.
For a couple podcasts I now subscribe to both the iTMS feed and the podcaster's direct feed. When the iTMS feed starts working again, I'll unsubscribe from the direct feed.
The bottom line is that podcasts come from a variety of sources and you need to check the podcaster's web site now and then to make sure your feed hasn't fallen behind for some reason.

  • Capturing from Beta SP via Canopus ADVC110 into FCP HD - HELP!

please help - desperately trying to capture into FCP HD using DV PAL 48 preset. I have BNCtoRCA adapter out of the beta SP video out going into the RVC video in of the canopus converter. Then 4 pin firewire out of the converter into my firewire 400 port. Have switched to all the correct relevant settings on the bottom of the canopus ...... but ... in my log & capture window the video appears to have no reference. i.e. black & white, scrambled. Any ideas?

Unfortunately I am sure... very confusing because you're right - that's exactly what it looks like the problem is! Sound is coming in scrambled also. If I try to capture it for longer than a couple of seconds I get an error saying there is a "problem with the source tape" Have tried every combination with the switches on the canopus box, changed cables, everything I can think of.

  • (CS4) Why is Premiere CS4 modifying TIFF files in a sequence?

    Hello,
decided to post here, because I didn't find any old postings of this subject anywhere.
I'm composing 2-d drawn animation on AE and editing in Premiere, then importing to
Avid media composer for exporting to Sony Digital Beta tape via SDI. When working in
CS3 and earlier, everything was nice, AE made about 1730 kB TIFF files and Premiere
kept them the same size, you just needed to select export -> movie... Tiff sequence,
deselect recompress, select best quality and optimize stills. File sizes were the same,
and I could rest assured that the original AE image quality was still there.
Now in CS4, something fundamental has changed. AE CS4 still makes perfect TIFF
animation frames (at 1024x576 same as CS3, about 1730kB and at 1050x576 about
    1770kB).
    So far, so good.
In Premiere 2.0 and 3.0, you could select a preselection 720*576 pal widescreen
composition and when exporting the edited animation would get the same pixel-level
IQ as from a custom Desktop: 1024*576 square pixel composition, when using the
Export movie described above. This to me looks like Premiere uses the original
    TIFF material.
But in Premiere 4.0, something weird happens. If I use a 720*576 pal widescreen
preset (with AE CS4 1050*576 animation sequences) and export 1050*576 pal
widescreen square pixel image sequences, Adobe Media Encoder chops off 330
square pixels and stretches the image horizontally for blurred, sad results.
    EXPORT MOVIE never did this!
Having found that out, I use only custom-> desktop: 1024 or 1050 projects now,
but here again something weird happens: Adobe Media encoder adds about 600kB
to every TIFF frame, and I'm almost unable to notice the difference, but I would say
that the images certainly don't look any better than the ones that were imported to
Premiere, more on the opposite. So, in every option but when exporting one TIFF at
a time Media Encoder alters the superb AE TIFFs.
Why on earth does Adobe want to add a huge amount of useless bits, in animation
the disk space required increases very significantly. What was wrong with the
    EXPORT MOVIE option?
I'm asking should I just edit in Premiere 3 if I want unchanged, superb AE quality
TIFF sequences? Premiere gives it when I export only 1 frame, but as soon as I tick
"Export as sequence" it starts Adobe Media encoder which affects all frames, even
those with no Premiere effects on them. Premiere 3 preserved original IQ even in
PAL editing mode (export movie uncompressed) but Encoder in CS4 either
loses 30% of the pixels or adds about 600kB more air!?!?!
1050*576 is not a must for me because I want web movies to be 16:9 sqpix and
the Avid where I work in prefers 1024*576 over 1050*576 in Digital Betacam tape
    exporting for uncompromised broadcasting results.
This issue is affecting many animatiors here in Finland, in CS3 and earlier there
were no problems because Premiere respected AE quality work, but now this Media
Encoder has messed things up, not selecting Custom-desktop-1024/1050 will ruin any
animation movie image sequence and selecting it makes files A LOT bigger without any
    improvement in IQ.
I hope someone from Adobe could explain what on earth is going on in Premiere
development? Many animation professionals in Finland are awaiting your kind reply.
Anyone with a clue what's going on in the altering can give a hand!
    Olli Laamanen, Finland

I did additional testing by comparing exported frames from Premiere
to the AE frames. Only when I delete all render files before export, do I get
the same image pixel-wise. But then there's the extra ~600kB of data.
Does anyone know what that is, a colleague suggested it might be the color
profile or some metadata added by adobe media encoder. I'd really like
to know what it is! Someone who knows something about this Adobe
Media Encoder might have the answer.
So if you are using AE and Premiere to make animation and want to
keep your master footage unchanged, the equivalent for CS3 export ->
movie -> TIFF uncompressed is to
    -work only in desktop mode
-delete all render files before exporting media through the encoder
otherwise CS4 will change your images.
Like this it doesn't change the images but adds over 30% additional
    data (somekind of tags/metadata)?
Anyone with a guess what it is, please help!

  • HD SDI versus Component... Which has a higher bit rate?

New system is up and running! I'm importing HDCAM footage through my decklink HD Extreme. Wondering what would yield a higher bit rate- the HD SDI input or the component input...? SDI is giving me about 95 mbps, but 4:2:2 uncompressed 8-bit HD is supposed to be as high as 150 mbps.
Side note: I'm using a BNC cable for the SDI input.

Same bit rate, only better quality via HD SDI.
Make sure you are using an HD SDI BNC cable...not just any BNC cable will do.
If you capture via Component...then HD SDI...you'll note the same bit rate.
SDI is giving me about 95 mbps, but 4:2:2 uncompressed 8-bit HD is supposed to be as high as 150 mbps.
    AS HIGH AS...meaning there is a range. uncompressed 10-bit HD ranges between 150 and 180 MB/s...depending on the frame rate...23.98, 29.97, 59.94...and the size...720p, 1080p.
    TOO MANY SECRETS...er...OPTIONS.

  • Digi Beta-DV editing- DVD for reproduction....Best workflow

I have access to 3 digi beta cameras to film a concert of band....
I would like to then edit it in FCP V6....
I have a mac book pro Intel.....and a E-sata drive attached to the Macbook pro..
    vias PC express card.
I know that I would have to get some kind of box to convert it to DV for editing..
Just wabnt to know what format,etc...
Then I would like to out put it to DVD studio pro for production...
Its all a bit new to me at the moment.....any thoughts or advice would be appreciated
Mac book pro 2.33 Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

You'll need a way to capture the digi beta... i.e. a deck... which do you or will you use?
You could just take the analog out from a betacam deck, and capture that signal via a DV camera, but it wouldn't be as good as using an Io for the job via SDI...
You'd need a keyspan adapter to capture the timecode correctly if you use a DV deck or camera for the transcode.
After capture to DV, the rest of the wrokflow would be pretty much the same as any DV workflow.
All that said, you'd have a much better looking edit if you captured the digibeta thru an Io HD to Pro Res 4:2:2 or to uncompressed 10 bit SD (which would require a faster drive setup)... but that won't be available until July sometime.

  • Firewire dv vs SDI

Is there a difference between footage Shot on DV Cam and digitised via firewire or digitised via SDI uncompressed? It looks as if there is but does any one know the technological differences? Id DV firewire still broiadcast acceptable - a 50 min Documentary combining PD 150, and DV Cam (DSR 570) for UK Broadcast.
    What about colour space ?

No difference. You gain nothing in terms of quality, in fact, if you go in SDI you are losing quality...as capturing over firewire is a lossless transfer.
BUT, you can do lots of things capturing via SDI. Your text and graphics improve dramatically as they have a better color space (4;2:2) DV will be 4:1:1 no matter how you capture it, but with filters you can push it into the 4:2:2 color space (with nattress plugins like G-Nicer) and make it look better. But the main gain is in the text and graphics that you work with in the project.
If you have the option to do it, do it. Your text and graphics will love you.

  • Unable to capture via Blackmagic UltraStudio Express

    Hi,
I'm having trouble capturing into Premiere Pro via UltraStudio Express.
I have a macbook pro 15” retina, Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014,  Desktop Video 10.1.4 (installed after PP), Ultrastudio Express, Ultrastudio Mini Monitor, Media Express, DaVinci Resolve 11 Lite.
I can capture from a camera via SDI into Media Express.
I can use LiveView and get monitor output with Resolve.
In Premiere Pro preferences, Device Control I can see 'Blackmagic Device Control'.
But I can't get any capture in Premiere Pro.  Following the directions in Desktop Video Manual February 2014, as I setup a new project in Premiere Pro, I click on ‘Settings’ under ‘capture’, but get no feedback.  If I proceed into a project, go to capture, I see no video from the connected camera.
Any advice would be wonderful.  I’m trying to use this system for a green screen shoot on Monday.
    Herb

To my knowledge, if CC is up to date, it's up to date.  I checked and there are no updates.  Thanks.

  • Final cut pro to canopus to beta deck

i can't get the firewire output to the beta deck. have an ADVC-110 media converter. so the setup is firewire (4 or 6-pin, have tried both) video/audio output of the mac, into the canopus, then from the red/white/yellow outputs there is a stereo pair of RCA cables with XLR adapters going to a Beta SP deck. I've gotten other signals in and out of the decks and input/outputs on the canopus. problem has definitely been narrowed down to the mac, or final cut pro. i've set every setting i can find to apple firewire but still can't get it.
    any ideas?...

Can you get a preview out to a monitor.
So go FW out of your Mac to the ADVC-110, then output analog S-Video for video and RCA red/white for audio out to a monitor.
If you get a preview to the monitor, then it should load up to the Beta deck via S-Video and RCA cables fine.
Make sure your Beta deck is setup correctly as well.
And i have seen plenty of S-Video cables go bad. Make sure those badboys are in good shape and/or new ones.
    Let us know...

  • External SDI Monitor Not Receiving Signal

I have been Premiere Pro CS6 with no problems in getting a video signal via SDI using the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Monitor. Moving to CC I have the exact same setups, but the image will not come through to the monitor at all. (sending SDI signal to Flanders reference monitor)
All the Premiere settings in Preferences >> "Playback" and "Device Control" are identical between CS6 and CC. The Black "Desktop Video" driver is the latest version (9.9.3) and settings are same when trying CS6 and CC.
What else might open up the video output signal and be different in CC setup than CS6?
    Thanks!

Check the cable  does not have an air gap at either end.
    Sorry ... no other ideas.
