Big news. No Netflix or Skype!!!!!

Why have either of these not been implemented yet?
This beta tablet has been on the shelves for almost a year.
Where is android app support?
I can't even sell this thing.
Man bb is going to be hurting once the long term phone contracts are up.
What other tablets have Netflix and Skype? Besides the apple products?

I do not wish to go into sarcastic discussions.
Your tech support :
- for your 9800 is exclusively through your carrier (Maxis)
- for your PlayBook is through the direct support (toll free for Puerto Rico) : http://us.blackberry.com/support/playbook-support/contact.jsp or the 90-day complimentary support.
That being said, this discussion is about Netflix and Skype, which are edited by third parties so RIM support has nothing to do with that.

  • Got my big new hard drives in hand - Now, what don't I know?

Got my big new hard drives in hand - Now what?
Have 2 old iMacs that I need to upgrade with bigger HDD’s and then upgrade the OS. I am experienced with hard and software upgrades since MacSE days (got all the tutorials marked) but not so much with recent OS10 permutations. Certain that all this has been posted here numerous times, but quite tired of searching for it after a couple hours and have probably unnecessarilly confused and frightened myself in sorting through the scary posts. Perhaps its all in an FAQ at another site?
    1. M9290LL/A G4 iMac 20” 1.25 Ghz 2GB RAM OS10.3.9
    2. M9845LL/A G5 iMac 20” ALS 2.0 Ghz 2GB RAM OS10.4.11
Presuming that I would clean up the existing internal HDDs, install the new drives (1TB & 500GB) in their appropriate external enclosures, initialize them with the apropriate HFS (know I saw that here somewhere), drag and drop the existing internal HDD onto the new external drive, boot from the external HDD for an appropriate test period (all 5 family users) and only then install the new drives in the iMacs.
With the files and user settings safely backed up on the old HDDs in the external enclosures, I can safely attempt OS upgrading. Already have family packs of newer OS versions, just never desired the weeklong headache of reconfigging 5 users and the typical screaming lost settings sessions.
I am not looking at a clean system and software install because of all the user settings. We have a fortune in legacy PowerPC software, some of which never worked right on the G5 with 10.4, but Safari for 10.3 is now very unstable and I have printers with no 10.3 drivers available.
    Questions:
1.What should I do to clean up the existing HDDs prior to copying over besides running Disk Utility. Didn’t Disk Utility. used to include a de-frag function? Hopefully there is shareware and this doesn’t require a $100 software suite.
    2. Do I need special cloning software due to windows-like traps in OS10 or can I just copy the entire old drive, sludge and all?
    3.What are the ultimate OS10 versions for these machines;
at what point am I installing lots of Intel code that simply slows these machines down or kludges up the legacy software?
    4. What else did I forget to ask? What would the pros at my local mac shop charge me fortune to do?
    Thanks

The prevailing answer to my posts is that I should either attempt a clean install and migration over using SD to clone copy the existing internal drive.
How good is the current migration experience? I've been doing OS upgrades since Mac SE days and never had a clean one in my life. Always lost the whole email folder or all the bookmarks or the address book files or the entire iTunes library or something that resulted in long hours of cursing and frustration. And that was with a single user.
And I know that these units will boot and be functional with upgrades to 10.4 and/or10.5. Unanswered is whether these computers will work faster or slower and more or less reliably?
Am not concerned with OS9 apps; have a couple old CRT iMac doorstops if the kids are overcome with a wave of nostalgia for Marathon or Pod Racer.
Does this or any other site maintain a master list of 10.4 / 10.5 software version compatibilty, or do I have to track down 50 different vendors' current websites?

  • How to Connect new Smart tv to Skype

We just bought a new Sharp Smart TV andtried to connect with the Skype APP included but could not, I called Sharp and they led me thru a reset process of the entire TV system and when we set everthing up it worked camera and all  I set up the account and everthing was OK but the next day it would not work the message was Not Ready Try again , called Sharp again but they have no trouble shooting solutions The TV is Ok with all other APPS? Please hepl we would like to Skype with family over the Holidays.
    Thanks
    Ron

    I have the same problem.
Sharp 70" Smart TV. Skype (w/ camera) doesn't work. As soon as a launch is attempted, a message comes up "Not Ready. Try Again". The message is so immediate, and the font is like a system font from the TV, and the screen doesn't even change at all from the previous app. So I'm assuming that the message is coming from Sharp, not even from the Skype software.
Resetting the whole TV makes it work, for a day, but when the TV powers off/on, the problem returns.
Phoning Sharp was no help, they just told me that some Sharp firmware update has broken Skype, and its up to me to get new software from Skype. Anyway, anyone heard of any new software from Skype, or if there is even a way to find out what version of Skype on Sharp that I have?

  • Is there a way to disable the new message notification in Skype Meetings?

Is there any way to turn off the notification at the bottom of our whiteboard that there are ### new messages.  It says Read directly to the right of the message.  You can X out of it but then the count starts back up again.  This is just an annoyance to our group and we would like to find a way to turn it off.

  • New block system on skype (PC)

With the latest update of skype , you can still see someone's messages even when you have them blocked from your pc. They can call you and it will ring on their end but you won't get any calls. And they can even see your information from date of birth to the number of contacts if u have it in public. They can even see if you are in available mode, away mode or busy mode. It doesn't show offline for them.

Hi, AvishekCasca, and welcome to the Community,
Thanks for this information.  For Skype to be able to reproduce this, the following information is needed:
    - Hardware use (laptop/phone/tablet brand and model)
    - Operating system (version and updates installed)
    - Skype version used
    - Internet connection used
    - The steps you took which led you to find this occurring
    - Screen shots depicting what you are seeing -- as long as no account names or other personal information is displayed.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Iexplore makes a problem (big news?)

    Hey all:
The following code is the basis of the index page for my new
website. Note the 6 orange rollover image buttons at the top. I
want these buttons to appear right together, as rendered in
Firefox. Iexplore, however, doesn't want to cooperate - it spaces
the buttons out grotesquely, ruining my design. The second block of
code is my external style sheet. If somebody can give me some help
with this I would really appreciate it!!!
    Page code:

    > The 6 roll over buttons are flanked by empty table cells
    on either side.
    > The
    > empty table cells, both
    > <td width="22" class="table_bkgrnd_main">
    > collapse in IE when they don't have any content
No, they don't. An empty table cell CANNOT collapse - the
    rest of the
column/row would prevent it from doing that. However, it
    looks like it's
collapsed since it does not show borders or background
    colors.
    > Also table cell height is an invalid attribute
No, it's not. Table cell heights have been deprecated, but
    they will
validate in the transitional doctypes, I believe. What is
    invalid is table
height, and that attribute has never been part of the HTML
    standards.

  • Post Interesting Things You Find That Weren't Big News

    1. You can take a screenshot by holding the home button and pressing the top power button. Goes to Photos.
    2. When you type in a password, you can now see the last character typed.

Good posts a lot of information I needed or to know, or more so wish I'd known prior to purchasing the 6280. Came across this post while trying to find resolutions to a number of the 'problems' with this model that you've listed, or for accuracy's sake functional and features missing from this phone or poorly develop, in comparison to other models.
Fact: One 'bug' that hasn't been raised in these posts is the management of a contact thumbnail's through PC Suite does work. Adding a thumbanil on the PC doesn't appear on the phone, and adding a thumbnail on the phone doesn't appear on the PC.
Oppinion: The lack of management/handling of Company name & Birthday were the killer for me!
Fact: Also I've only had the phone about 2 days now and I've had it just stop and mysteriously restart on me about 4 times. Admittly I've been using it a lot but not doing anything out of the ordinary to expect that.
Oppinion: On the plus side the screens resolution great, and the photos very good for a phone. Neat little cropping tool, but nothing to rotate. Although the camera doesn't have a protector the case can be replace fixing and scratches! The phone is generally pretty responsive, boots and shuts down very quickly too.
Oppinion: I'm probably being over critical here but the video call's camera at half arms length barely shows your whole face, at full arms length it's 'closer' to what you'd see on a passport. Although at this distance viewing the person your calling is more difficult. The phone has a good digital zoom in-out feature during a video call. But given the small portion of you shown under normal circumstances I don't imagine this would get used often. Admittly it was entertaining to keep the phone where it was and zoom in on my eye, but it's entertainment value will wear off (or maybe i could call me iridologist).

  • DCIM: More Than a Patch Panel

    Big News from Netflix
It’s official: Netflix has acknowledged plans to close its last privately owned data center in the next few months. This decision means the company will be one of the first of its size to rely solely on public cloud storage.
If you’ve been following updates about Netflix’s IT infrastructure over the past few years, you know that this shift has been happening since 2008. (One source says it began eight years ago after the company experienced a significant hardware failure at its own data center.)Netflix’s provider of choice is Amazon Web Service, but it’s interesting to note that Amazon doesn’t run its own business entirely on the cloud. Amazon also competes with Netflix on some level with its video streaming services.Netflix’s intriguing decision to move 100% to the public cloud brings some fascinating conversations...

After purchasing the rights to use the Commodore logo and branding, two Italian entrepreneurs are preparing to release a new Commodore PET. But where the iconic Commodore PET of the late 1970s was a personal computer, the new Commodore PET is catching up with the times and features "a customized version of Android 5.0 Lollipop, a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS display, and a pair of emulators for running old Commodore software." In other words, the new Commodore PET is a smartphone.According to Ars Technica, the PET is "powered by some respectable hardware, [which includes] ... a sturdy slab of Gorilla Glass 3, a 1.7GHz Mediatek 64-bit octa-core processor with ARM Mali T760 GPU, 3GB of RAM, and a large 3000mAh battery." • New 'Modern' Skype in Windows 8 Terrible!

    I hope Microsoft/Skype are listening.
I don't know about all you other forum users, but am I the only person who thinks the new so-called 'modern' Skype in Windows 8 is terrible?
The useability is so unintuative and frustrating. It seems that one can't do anything simply with this 'new' version.
Apart from being big and in your face without the option to minimize, running away in the background, I list the following 'problems'.
    1. Call quality has suffered. I seem to be 'cut-off' from my conversation a lot more frequently than below on the Windows 7 desktop version.
    2. After being cut-off and trying to contact the person with whom I was speaking again, they are inevitabily trying to call me thru' at the same time. This causes great confusion for the 'new# Windows 8 system, which keeps ringing (calling) in the background despite being reconnected!!
    3. You cannot seem to delete conversations, read messages and previous caller records as before.
    4. Adding a contact initially seems impossible! Only after 'faffing-about' for 10 mins did I realise that you search for a new contact via the Windows 8 slide-in right section. However, this does not seem right and hence why not obvious as it just looks like you are doing a search in the desktop/My Computer, despite not actually being in desktop mode.
I am certainlt not one adverse to change and welcome it. However when it comes to computing upgrades, change is support to be 'better', 'more helpful', 'easier', but above all, have continuity. Windows 8 Skype App has none of this.
I think Microsoft need to take a look at redesigning the Skype App for Windows 8 in order to incorporate once more the features that we have all been intuatively used to for so many years before the dawn of Windows 8.

I totally agree.  I just finished using skype on my windows 8 laptop and was very frustrated.  We had a group meeting and when messages were sent and/or documents forwarded, I could not find anyway or instruction that would allow me to share in those presentations.  Even after the group call, when I searched for an answer, I could not get instructions that would work on the screens I was using.  Everything that was presented, did not either work, or I could not find the area to click on to get to where I wanted to go.
Why can't I get the old skype screen back, where when a message came in, it popped up on the bottom and I could open and read, or I could type a message and direct it to whoever I wanted.  All I could do was listen and talk while watching all these huge pics and icons staring back at me.
I don't mind change, as long as you can get the same features you are used to and a way to easily use them.  Bad job Windows and Skype!

  • New Skype update

Just been forced to update Skype when I opened it. Put simply... looks terrible, looks like made for a phone and not a desktop. Everything is big, the contact window is half the size with bigger images/text. Chat windows has bigger text, lots of white spaces between messages and top half of window is wasted space that could have been smaller. There's also still the same annoying feature where when you click on someone to start a chat, their name stays highlighted and the only way to make it go away is to go to recents, click on an offline buddy, then go back to contacts.... way too much just to remove the name highlight which looks bad and could just be done with a click on a blank space (like many other programs do).
Overall I really don't like this update and want to know how to go back to the previous version.

I believe your computer selectively downloaded the  new GUI release of Skype, the standard version of  Skype can be downloaded here:
    Skype 6.20.0.104 standard desktop
    http://download.skype.com/3c96eaf2d0d77a29ff363d4357841955/SkypeSetupFull.exe
If you still don't like the appearance of that version, the lowest functioning version you can downgrade to is 6.14.

  • Why does new Skype work with one user, and not another?

Running 19.4.5, I installed the latest version of Skype. (I do not activate it on login) This opens, but crshes/unexspectedly quits on "sign in". I tried the same with a "new user", and the app opened fine. I compared the two users to make sure that Skype was correctly featured in my usual user. No difference. Still crashes.
Does anyone have an idea what could be conflicting with Skype?

Right, problem solved! . Am posting this as it may help in future. I use a useful little app called Window Dragon,(a haxie) which helps resize windows with the mouse. This was causing the conflict, but had not with earlier versions of Skype. All I had to do was exclude Window Dragon from working with the new updated version of Skype and everything back to normal.
Solutions to apps that "quit unexpectedly" or crash often mention that haxies can often come into conflict with apps. So best to start with any haxies one has installed, disable, test etc..

I recently got a new computer - a lenovo. It had skype pre packaged, I think. When I opened it up, it had this insane new-looking version of skype in it. It looked so bad to me. I could barely use it, and I couldn't even go see my old conversation from before I downloaded me. I really don't like this version.
I've wanted to try to download an older version. Is that allowed? how can i do that?
