Binary file of unknown formats

Hello everybody,
I posted a message earlier today but unfortunately I missed to give more details about my problem. I am sorry about that. I am a new user of LabView so I still have many things to learn. What I am trying to do is use LabView (8.2) to read a file that was created by UVP Monitor, V3.0 (*.mfprof file).
This package saves fluid velocity information. There are 65 channels that form a velocity profile in a pipe. Also, there are 4096 velocity profiles, each velocity profile was captured at a time rate of 9 ms. I don’t know what is the format of these values.
At present, I obtain a text file from UVP Monitor, then process the data using FORTRAN and finally plot the results. I want to avoid this and read the UVP file, process, analyze and plot the data using only LabView. I want to read individual experimental parameters as well as the bulk of the data. In this way the user has different options to choose from before processing and plotting the results. I actually built a VI that processes and plots the text files and it runs great.
The problem I am facing now is that I want to read the UVP file but I have no information about the structure of it. I am assuming it is a binary file but that is all I can say about it.
The header and footer seem to be in text format, that is all I can read; however, the body of the file I am not yet able to read.
The information from the file is sent to the type cast function. Then I set a string indicator in the “Normal” option in Properties. I can read the header and footer but not the body of the file; for the body of the file all I can see is characters of the type
“C¾ Ü Qþ  X@ “. One of the other options, Password, seems to provide an output of just the characters that were originally written, but then again, I can not read the characters because it is only asterisks and I can not copy them onto a word processor either.
I have tried other options as well, such as Variant to flattened string and flattened string to variant, flatten to string and unflatten from string. Unfortunately none of them worked.
I am attaching the VI I wrote and a sample UVP file , I would appreciate if someone could explain to me how to deal with  complex binary files in LabView and share an example with me if possible.
Regards,
Roberto

OK, here's a quick draft how you could do it in LabVIEW. Modify as needed, e.g. slice out the interesting columns, etc.
The header has some binary data that may, or may not, mean something useful.
See if the data "looks" about right.

  • IDVD: Files exported from iMovie 11, one works, one "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format"

I used footage from the same camera (taken on the same weekend using the same settings) in several different iMovie "projects". All were shared from iMovie 11 as "File" using the quality setting "SD 480p".
In Quicktime Player, all ".mp4" files will play and they show the following info in its inspector:
    Format: H.264, 854 x 480
                  AAC, 48000 Hz, Stereo (L R)
    FPS: 29.97
One exported file will drag, drop, and burn in iDVD just fine. The other two files show the error "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format" as soon as I try and drag them into iDVD.
The only difference I can find is that the one file that works is about 803MB, while the files that don't work are 1.87GB and 3.98GB.
All files and the iDVD project are in the same folder on my startup volume. I've tried deleting com.apple.idvd but that didn't help. I've tried rebooting and starting the iDVD project from scratch but I get the same results.
    Mac OS 10.9.1
    iMovie 10.0.1
    iDVD 7.1.2
    Any ideas?

Hello Bengt and thank you again for the replies.
As I mentioned in my previous posts, I'm using iMovie 10.0.1 which has very limited quality adjustments. In every case I chose the smallest size, which iMovie 10.0.1 calls "SD 480p (854 x 480)". I used this same setting on all exports.
I still have iMovie HD (6.0.4) and iMovie '11 (9.0.9) on my iMac so I tried both of them. In both cases, they could import only the file that works in iDVD. Both older versions of iMovie choked on the longer movies shared from iMovie 10.0.1.
I have many many hours into the editing of these clips and I do not want to have to go back and redo everything in an older version of iMovie. Might I be better off going with a different DVD creation software? Or am I out of luck? Because I can't really change iMovie 10.0.1's export settings, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do to get it to export it as something that iDVD can use (really, I can't even tell why it's different and why iDVD doesn't like it).
The software "WonderShare DVD Creator" has no issue with any of the files I've exported from iMovie 10.0.1.

  • Importing .mov "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format" error

I have a .avi video from a camera and wanted to burn to a dvd to watch on dvd player. I converted the video to .mov but when I dragged into iDVD I received an error stating "Unsupported File Type : Unknown format". I converted to a .mp4 hoping that might work and had the same error. As far as I remembered .mov and .mp4 should work in iDVD and iMovie but I had the same error in both programs.
Converted to .mov with iSquint, and to .mp4 with Quicktime.
    Any suggestions?

    hi,
thank you for responding...  i followed your instructions and this is what comes up when i try to open the movie:
    QuickTime Player can't open_______.mov
To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More.
i've done nothing different with this movie.  it's the 2nd part of a longer project that i had to break into two parts.  the first part was successfully burned to disk.  i'm at a loss as to why this one is 'different' and why anything else might be required to make it work properly.
btw, here's the info from the entire project:
    format: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (853 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    fps: 29.97
    data size: 42 GB
    data rate: 30.31 Mbit/s
    current size: 853 × 480

  • Unsupported File Type : Unknown format - idvd surely knows .mov

I have just installed IDVD 7 03 (ilife'09) and it won't take in .mov or .mp4 or any other video format.
    I'm on macbook pro 10.5.8.
Unsupported File Type : Unknown format - comes up when I drag it over.
Begging for help here! Have a client waiting on a DVD i promised!

I don't really know but feel doubtful as
DVD is as standard - interlaced SD-video with a frame rate of 25 fps (PAL) or 29.97 fps (NTSC)
the feeding it progressive material in HD and in some cases as 24 fps  - must be problematic.
    I would
    a. Import my movie into iMovie
    b. Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res. as result will suffer)
    c. In iDVD import from Media button and Movie and here find Your movie and drop it into iDVD menu window

  • Trying to import dvd into iDVD,it says Unsupported File Type:Unknown format

    Hi there,
I just had a home movie transferred from vhs to dvd. Now I am trying to import it into iDVD and when i try to the message appears : Unsupported File Type :Unknown format
    Logical Volume Identifier/VIDEO_TS.
I wanted to put the home movie to music (it allowed me to import the song, not the video).
It says the kind of file is UNIX Executable File.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

to do this you would first need to convert the DVD (mpeg 2) to QT so you can import to iDvd which btw involves a quality hit. There are apps out there that can do this at a marginal level ... for example:

  • Unsupported file type: unknown format

When importing .mov file into IDVD i get the following error messeage
    unsupported file type: unknown format

    Hi jdydel
Welcome to apple discussions. I see this is your very first question / post to the iDvd forum. I need to point out that we've been having others asking about files that originated as copy protected video (which we can't advise on due to apple's TofU) and then somehow where eventually converted to a .mov from their original source. We're assuming you aren't one of these folks and that when you post a question to this forum that we are NOT dealing with any copy protected material. You may wish to confirm this for us from the very start of your question/s.

  • Unsupported File Type : Unknown Format - ac3

i used Compressor 4 to create audio and video DVD files for use in iDVD.  The video (M2V) imports fine, but the audio (ac3) does not and instead pops up the error message in the title.
In Compressor 4, the audio settings used were: Dolby Digital Professional.  There are no other audio DVD choices.
My iDVD and Compressor 4 are up to date.
How do we get iDVD to read the ac3 audio file or Compressor 4 to code it so that it will work?

Solved my own question, in part at least.
Copied the Dolby setting in Compressor to creata custom one, changed the file format to AIFF, bingo, iDVD takes it.
Now the big hassle, Import in iDVD seems to do nothing.  The audio is there, but the video is nowhere to be found. This is getting effing tiresome.
Anyone know where imported movies go before they expire into the ether?

    Hi Gang
Still don't care as much for iDVD 08, as compared to iDVD 06. I realize there are stability improvements, but something else always gets thrown out the door. Now the latest is that I cannot load QT files into any of the themes. These are legitimate files created in FC6.

What codec are they in? If not sure, open the clip with QT Player and hit Cmd + I.

  • Bookmark file is of unknown format..?? :(

I have firefox 3.6 installed on my system.I uninstalled it and during that i created backup of bookmarks.Didnt realize in wht format it was saving them.
After reinstalling firefox 3.6 i restored from the backup file. Two three days later my pc screwed up.I had to redo windows and now after installing 3.6 when i went to restore boookmarks the file of unknown format and it fails to restore.

A JSON file needs to have a .json file extension, otherwise Firefox won't recognize it as such.<br />
You may need to add quotes around the name ("bookmarks.json") to force a new file extension on Windows.

  • Binary file write cancatenation during writing

    Hi,
I'm trying to write a 2D array into a binary file and save the whole complete array in 2D.  As shown in the picture, data is written and appended to the binary file during each loop.  However, each loop would generate a 5x800 2D array (5 rows, 800 elements in each row).  Right now I have to use another vi to process the binary file I saved to concatenate all the arrays in the binary file to finally obtaion a 5 x 800n (n is the number of loops) array.  Is there a way to save the data into binary file in that format during each loop instead of writing into different segments and I have to concatenate different segments together after that?
On the other hand, if there's a way to do that, would that increase the loop cycle time because it's more computationally expensive?  Thank you very much for your help.
    Thank you,
    Charles

    See the attached examples.
If you have the file open you can basically just write data to it whenever you have it available, just do not include the length. It can cost a bit to write single elements so the row option is more commonly used, but it depends on how large each row is (if they are huge then it will cost to much to keep them in memory and you write parts of each row instead...).
I have not covered cases where you need to close the file and add data later, but the difference then is just that you need to set the write position after you have re-opened the file.

  • Unable to open .eps file "unknown format and cannot be opened" ?

A client sent me an .eps file (logo). I tried opening it in Illustrator AND photoshop (just to see if it was saved in one vs the other program) - however to no avail.
Illustrator gives me a message "unknown format and cannot be opened"
Photoshop gives me a message "photoshop was unable to parse the postscript".
I'm using Adobe CS4, and I've never seen this message before—would love to know what this means and how to resolve?
File attached if anyone is able to open / fix it?
    Thanks kindly,
    Chemol

Thanks for the advice Scott - does compression improve the .eps?  Is it
silly for me to ask them to compress it since the file is only 766 KB
(that's how big the attachment is in my email - though I am unable to open
    it)?
My friend is able to open it on his end - however the 3rd person (client) is
the one who sent it, and I have already requested a different version - no
response from them yet.  Unfortunately what the company "has" is what he
will likely give to me again (ie: same file / unable to open).  So ... I am
curious about how I can resolve this issue on my end - if possible?
Do you know what the AI and Photoshop error messages mean? Could the issue
be a mac vs PC concern? Or is it a corrupt file? Could it be a software
version issue (old vs new) ... or Quark incompatibility?
.... just guessing at this point....Any insight as to what different
scenarios may apply in this situation would be greatly appreciated ..thank
    you.

I can think of two possible stumbling blocks:
What are your 8.6 options for "byte order" and "prepend array or string size"?
Overall, many file IO functions have changed with LabVIEW 8.0, so there might not be an exact 1:1 code conversion. You might need to make some modifications. For example, in 7.1, you should use "write file", the "binary file VIs" are special purpose (I16 or SGL). What is your data type?

  • Binary file format

    Hello!
What is the binary file format for files created by Labview's example High
Speed Data Logger? The header information comes first, but how is the actual
logged data written in the file? I have logged two channels.
    Thanks in advance for advice.
    Best regards,
    Antti Ryhänen

The LV code first converts the I16s to U16s and casts it as single-precision floats. It them multiplies the result by a scaling factor that's stored in the data header and adds an offset that's found in the same place.
