BIND appends my domain to remote host names when querying

I'm running BIND v9.3.0 on Solaris 8.
All the zone files, named.conf, resolv.conf etc seem to be properly
configured.
I get normal name resolution for hosts located inside my v-lan.
Sendmail works inside my v-lan.
However, when I try to hit an internet site outside of my v-lan it
won't resolv.
So, setting nslookup to debug mode, I did a lookup of a remote host.
The result is that, when my local dns is queried, the host name alone
is used, like its supposed to
i.e.
;;res_nmkquery(QUERY, hostname, IN A)
This is a remote host so, obviously, my DNS has no record of it, so it
tries the remote server. This is where the problem comes in. When
the remote server is queried, my domain gets appended to the host
name:
i.e.
;;res_nmkquery(QUERY, hostname.MYDOMAIN, IN A)
Since the host does not reside in my domain, obviously this fully
qualified domain name will never resolve because it isn't correct.
How do I make it stop????!!!!!

I notice the following error logs in server :
EXCH.xxxx.org.xx in the personal store on the local computer. Therefore, it is unable to support the STARTTLS SMTP verb for the connector Default Frontend EXCH with a FQDN parameter of EXCH.xxxx.org.xx. If the connector's FQDN is not specified, the computer's
FQDN is used. Verify the connector configuration and the installed certificates to make sure that there is a certificate with a domain name for that FQDN. If this certificate exists, run Enable-ExchangeCertificate -Services SMTP to make sure that the Microsoft
Exchange Transport service has access to the certificate key.

  • Bind to RMI registry on remote host

    Is it possible to bing to a RMI registry on remote host. I get a Access exception when I try it. Is there is any work around for this?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    :Like I say, JINI uses a different model to RMI, and you can probably have a look at the forum for that here.
    but a way around it is to create a server which listens for requests, accepts a remote object and a remote object name, and binds those into the registry on which its running - remember that the restriction only applies to registering objects, not to looking them up, so, once the object is registered on the remote host, it can be retrieved quite easily.
    This of course leaves the problem of exception ahandling aside, but I trust the problems there are obvious

    This is the same problem I ran into. Unfortunately there is no way around this. I had to abondon using RMI registry and instead I changed my program to use the tnameserv/orbd stand-alone naming services in a typical JNDI fashion. This tutorial has some examples, good luck:

  • 10.5 server changes host name when changed to be member of 10.4 OD Master

    Hi,
    I have a Xserve with 10.4.11. This is my working OD master hostname: AAA, FQDN: AAA.domain, realm DOMAIN. Now I have a PowerMac G5, hostname BBB, FQDN BBB.domain, where I install 10.5 server.
    When it comes up as stand alone, the hostname is BBB (FQDN BBB.domain), but when I then connect it (as domain member) to my OD master, it promts me to say that "AAA" is a used hostname and that it changes hostname to" AAA (2)".
    In my DNS it is still identified as BBB.domain, and it is bind to the realm as BBB.
    Why does it act like this?
    Subsequently I can't get kerberos to work and SMB does not want to be a member of the domain (always get back to standalone instead of becoming member of the domain).

    Here comes a bit more on this one. I waited and maybe this had to do with having a OD master in Tiger and the OD member on Leopard. But now both are in Leopard. And things are the same.
    I have thou been studying the Console after some tips. And I'm changing the host name in Server Admin/Network to BBB (what it should be). And it seems to work fine. Name of the server changes where supposed to (what I can see). And in Console I can se that the administration tool changes host name in a variety of places.
    And now I wait.
    If I do nothing (the network is pretty small), nothing happens. But after a while, I login with for example Remote desktop the followingapears in Console:
    +Jan 3 12:58:02 emil mDNSResponder[30]: User updated Computer Name from AAA (2) to AAA+
    +Jan 3 12:58:02 emil mDNSResponder[30]: afpovertcp.tcp. service renamed from "AAA (2)" to "AAA"+

    "AAA (2) to AAA" may as well be "BBB to AAA". But I'm very surprised over that the logg claims that "User updated Computer name..." For all I know, I haven't. And note in the middle here that the mDNSResponder changes to AAA (which indeed is used - it's the OD master!!!), discovers that the name is in use, and then changes to "AAA (2)".
    But why does it at all initiate a change from AAA to "AAA (2)"?
    Why can't I call the server BBB?

  • Can you refer to the original host name when using a challenge redirect?

    I have an authentication scheme that uses a challenge redirect to cause authentication to happen using https instead of http. However, this seems to break some of our monitoring scripts because now the credential challenge is coming from a different host name. Is it possible to refer to the original host name with some type of variable in the challenge redirect parameter? Below is an example:
    1. User accesses secured URL at http://appstenv2.company.com/testurl
    2. This webserver is hosting several aliases (appstenv2.company.com, appstenv4.company.com, appstenv6.company.com) and has a main name of appsdev.company.com - but is a single apache webserver where there is an application server plugin installed which will route to the desired application server environment based on the original hostname. So if a user accesses it with a name of appstenv2.company.com/testurl they will be routed to the "test 2" environment application server. If they access it as appstenv6.company.com, they would be routed to the "test 6" environment application server.
    3. This webserver listens on both http and https.
    4. The current challenge redirect can only redirect to a specific URL so it is set to "https://appsdev.company.com" which works fine interactively but the recorded monitoring scripts suddenly see a new hostname doing the prompting for credentials even though it is the same webserver - just a different alias.
    5. If possible, I would want to do the redirect in a relative fashion rather than absolute by using the original hostname from the URL being accessed. So, if the user was accessing http://appstenv2.company.com/testurl, I would like to redirect to https://appstenv2.company.com for the basic authentication. but with the same authentication scheme, if the user accesses http://appstenv6.company.com/testurl, I would want the challenge redirect to go to https://appstenv6.company.com. I'm hoping it's possible to use some system variable like SERVER_NAME to do this.
    Challenge Redirect: https://$SERVER_NAME
    Does anyone know if that is available in OAM 10.1.4.3 or some other way to accomplish the same thing with a single authentication scheme?

    No, there are not multiple policies - the host names for all aliases on that single webserver are together in a single host identifier. And I realize I can only have a single challenge redirect, I just want to use a variable to redirect to the host name that was accessed as opposed to a static name.

    Hey all,
    I am trying to accessing the IR and ID at my client however the wrong host name is being called. For instance the

  • Network Error []: Cannot Get Host Name when running business rules

    Guru's
    We are getting the following error intermittently when we are running business rules (Planning Application >>Tools>>Business Rules) or running SmartView refreshes:
    Network error []: Cannot Get Host Name
    The following is then logged in the Essbase Application logs:
    Local/Application/Database/admin@Native Directory/Error(1042022)
    Network error []: Cannot Get Host Name.
    A quick look at the Essbase Error Messages Doc says it is a network error and we have to consult the network documentation. Unfortunately this is not very descriptive so we logged an SR with Oracle but we don't seem to be getting a resolution.
    The environment is 11.1.2.0 and the architecture is as follows:
    Server 1 - MS Server 2008 x64:
    Planning, Calc Manager, Foundation Services, Framework Web Services, EAS, APS, Web Analysis, FR Web Services
    Server 2 - MS Server 2008 x64:
    Essbase Server
    Server 3 - MS Server 2008 x64:
    Framework Services, FR Print Services
    We have tried doing the following:
    1. Put in the server host names into the hosts file on the Hyperion Servers
    2.  Applied the following TCP/IP settings on all the Hyperion Servers and one of the user machines as a test:
          - Added a new DWORD Value named TcpTimedWaitDelay and set it to 30.
         - Added a new DWORD Value named MaxUserPort and set it to 65534.
         - Added a new DWORD Value named MaxFreeTcbs and set it to 6250
    3. Confirmed that there are no packet drops by monitoring the server NICs so no packet loss could be the cause of this issue
    4. The Essbase Config file has the following settings:
    NETDELAY 2000
    NETRETRYCOUNT 2500
    Has anyone come across this issue and if you managed to resolve it, how did you go about it.
    Thanx

    Hi Rahul
    The issue is happening to a number of calcs so it it not one calc specifically. I will ask the functional consultants to enhance the logging in the business rules so that we can see if the issue happens on a specific member\block etc and yes we do use Xrefs
    We can run this as a calc in EAS without any issues and it's intermittent because this business rule runs 95% of the time in Planning Application >> Tools >>Business Rules without any issues.
    Thanks

  • Domain Name, Host Name and VPN help

    When I connect to my office VPN and try to ssh to one the machine I always have to put domain name, for example:
    ssh -X snorlax.xx.yy.com
    Recently my office changed their VPN settings and this started happening. Earlier I was able to just use snorlax instead of typing snorlax.xx.yy.com
    My mail client has also stopped working from home saying same thing: host cannot be resolved .
    I was reading online about domain name but I'm not too sure how does this work.
    Is it possible to append xx.yy.com before host name before resolving?
    Any help or suggestion would be appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Shivam

    You could also directly assign the IP to the hostname and skip the dns lookup if you add it to /etc/hosts.
    If you need more fine-grained control over hostname resolution you can use a local dns server like dnsmasq, bind (named), pdnsd, or unbound

  • How to detect remote (client) host name or remote host address?

    Hello!
    I need to receive remote host name or remote IP address in the BSP controller DO_REQUEST method. How to do it?
    In Java I can use getRemoteAddr() or getRemoteHost() methods of HttpServletRequest class. But in the BSP I can not find analogues of these methods.
    Please help
    Best regards,
    Eugeny

    Hi,
    I guess there is something "cleaner", but here is a solution:
    DATA l_host TYPE string.
    l_host = me->request->if_http_entity~get_header_field( '~remote_addr' ).

  • How to resolve a host name from IP using JNDI/DNS service provider

    Hi
    I got two questions on JNDI/DNS service provider:
    1) How to resolve a host name when i got an IP
    I understand How I do it inverse.
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://"+server+"/"+domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(host, new String[] {"A"});
    2) This example above works when I specify the domain in the provider url.
    If I am not specifing a domain but only the dns server I got an NameNotFoundException.
    What should I do if I don't got the domain?
    get the availible domains and loop on them?

    Hi,
    if your DNS server supports that, you can do a reverse DNS lookup. This works as follows:
    String server = "your.dns.server";
    String domain = "in-addr.arpa";
    String ip = "4.3.2.1";
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://" + server + "/" + domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(ip, new String[] {"PTR"});1: Use the pseudo-domain in-addr.arpa
    2: Use the reverse IP address for lookup, i.e. if your host has 1.2.3.4, use 4.3.2.1!!
    3: Request the PTR attribute

  • Host Name Character Restriction

    Hi Guys,
    Is there any way to over come the 13 character specific as the max num of characters allowed in the host name while installing NW
    I am trying to install NW2004s.
    But my system is having a host name which includes the domain name and obviously goes beyond 13 characters.
    Anyway to overcome this.
    Thanks in advance
    Helpful anwsers will be awarded.

    Hi Rosin,
    Generally it will look like this:
    Computer Name: <name> (max 13 chars)
    Domain <domain>
    Full computer name: <name>.<domain>
    Why your host name includes the domain name?
    Also make sure that your computer name (host name) contains alpha-numeric chars.

  • BusinessObjects Enterprise HOST NAME PROBLEMS

    As we can find in other posts, we know that BO has problems with underscore in the host name.
    I read in some posts that the problem can be solved by writing the IP address instead of the host name when we use Infoview or whatever we need.
    I've done two BO enterprise installations in two different Vitual Machines (made with Virtual PC).
    I know that SAP guarantees that BO works fine only on VMware platform with the host name without underscores.
    The host on the first Virtual Machine was named correctly, but after the installation I changed it inserting an underscore; after this the Infoview login interface didn't work. So I tried to write the IP address and It worked properly.
    Trying to use Designer and Translation Manager I had  only to use the IP address instead of the current host name.
    The host on the second Virtual Machine was named with an underscore, and after the installation I launched the Infoview login interface that didn't work. Again I tried to write the IP address and It worked properly, but in this case I couldn't launch the Designer and I couldn't import the universe from cms with the Translation Manager!!!
    I got this exception opening the Designer:

    I got this exception importing the universe from cms in the Translation Manager:

    I'd like to know if:
    1) Is this a problem because of the Virtual PC virtual machine?
    2) Is this a problem because of the BO problem with underscore in the host name?
    and
    3) How can I resolve this problem without changing the host name?
    Thank you for your attention,
    Giorgio
    Edited by: Agliano Giorgio on Jul 21, 2009 12:28 PM

    Hi Agliano,
    changing the Hostname of a Server after BO is installed is a bad idea ! The WAR files for your Tomcat are in some sort "hardcoded".
    I would suggest re- deploying your war files on the Tomcat would fix this issue. Check SAP Note - 1308027 for assistance.

    Error:
    unknown smtp host: hostname

    and the one included in the code blow.You have written "hostname" in the code below. Since "hostname" is certainly NOT a valid SMTP host name,
    that's why you get the error: unknown smtp host: hostname.
    What did you expect? You must provide a valid SMTP host name, NOT "hostname". You see the difference right?
    Try with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) SMTP host name.
    It should be something like: stmp.somename.com.
    That's the one you must set in your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Eudora, Lotus Notes, whatever) to send your emails.
