Bind variables in java

Hi, anyone knows how to do bind variables in java using a contains sql statement. I have the following sql statement:
SELECT mytable.text FROM a_table mytable WHERE CONTAINS (mytable.text, '? WITHIN text',1) > 0
Here is couple of lines of my java code
PreparedStatement ps2= conn.prepareStatement(mysql);
ps2.setString(1,"bond");
ResultSet rset = ps2.executeQuery();
Every time I execute this query I get
ORA-01006: bind variable does not exist
Please help
thanks

user,

• What's disadvantages when using bind variables always in java?

Hello everyone .. Could someone tell me what's the disadvantage when using bind variable in java ? I heard it somecases since before.. Thanks in advance!

99% of the time, you should be using bind variables. If you have columns which are highly skewed, however, you may want to consider using literals (assuming CURSOR_SHARING=EXACT), since that may allow the CBO to make a better decision.
If you have an orders table, for example, you may have a status column that specifies whether the order is complete, in transit, or new. If you've been running for a while, 99% of your orders will be complete, so
SELECT COUNT(*)
FROM orders
WHERE status = :1should do a full table scan if you specify 'COMPLETE'. If you passed in 'IN TRANSIT', though, an index scan might be more appropriate. If you want to pass in different values and get different query plans, you need to use literals. 99% of the time, though, you want the same plan, so you want to use bind variables.

• Java.sql.SQLException occurs in bind variable

Hi.,
I am using jdev11.1.5
I had created a vo based on the following code
select count(*) "var_count",aj_appl
from appl_journals
where
aj_status = :status and
aj_appl = :ajappl or :ajappl is null
group by aj_applIn this i am passing status ,ajappl is a bind variable Status has a initial variable 'N'
while i try to run this vo in my business component browser i am getting the error
(java.sql.SQLException) Missing IN or OUT parameter at index:: 1
how can i resolve this error

Database Table:-

Name Null? Type
DSBRSMNT_PRMTR_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(38)
INS_SYS_ID NUMBER(38)

CRTD_BY VARCHAR2(30)
CRTD_DT DATE
LAST_CHNGD_BY VARCHAR2(30)
LAST_CHNGD_DT DATE

What exactly are you trying to do? If you're trying to run an update statement, it's simpler if you do this:
PreparedStatement pstmt = null;
Connection conn = ?????;
String updateStr = "UPDATE D9T652_DISBRSMNT_PRMTR " +
"SET " +
"Stmnt_Page_Wgt_Ozs = ?, " +
"Chk_Page_Wgt_Ozs = ?, " +
"Flat_Envelope_Wgt_Ozs = ?, " +
"Half_Fold_Envelope_Wgt_Ozs = ?, " +
"Last_Chngd_By = TRIM(?), " +
"Last_Chngd_Dt = ? " +
"WHERE " +
"Ins_Sys_Id = Ins_Sys_Id_Constant_For_Compass AND " +
"Last_Chngd_Dt = (SELECT MAX(Last_Chngd_Dt) " +
"FROM D9T652_DISBRSMNT_PRMTR " +
"WHERE Ins_Sys_Id = Ins_Sys_Id_Constant_For_Compass) "
From the String constructed above, the first ? mark will be bind to 1, second to 2..... etc and you can set the appropriate types.
pstmt = conn.prepareStatement(updateStr);
pstmt.setString(1, request.getParameter("formValue1")); // this is assuming you want to store string value in DB field
pstmt.setInt(2, Integer.parseInt(request.getParameter("formValue2"))); // this is assuming you want to store int value in DB field
pstmt.setTimestamp(3, new java.sql.Timestamp(new java.util.Date().getTime())); // this is assuming you want to store current time in DB Date field
..... etc
..... etc
...... etc
int rows = pstmt.executeUpdate();
Hope this helps!!

i m getting the following error
java.sql.BatchUpdateException: ORA-01027: bind variables not allowed for data definition operations
can any1 help me with this.

Can you explain what you are trying to do from a business perspective?
If you are creating a view, it doesn't make sense to pass bind variables to that DDL statement. The view definition itself is going to have to end up with hard coded date values there. So what possible benefit is there to using bind variables?
As an aside, if you are using bind variables and you have DATE columns, you really want to pass in the proper data type (i.e. setDate or setTimestamp rather than setString). Otherwise, Oracle has to do implicit string to date conversion, which depends on the session's NLS settings, which is likely to be different on different client machines and lead to all sorts of odd errors and behaviors down the line.
Are you trying to build a view that takes parameters? If so, there are a few options for that sort of thing.

• Problem with Bind Variable not updatable.

Hi all,
I'm using Jdev 11.1.2.3.0. In my VO, I created a Bind Variable and set it NOT UPDATABLE. Then I created a View Criteria with some other Bind Variables.
I use this View Criteria in a search page, but at runtime I see also an inpunt text for the variable that is set NOT UPDATABLE and I can change its value.
Of course if I try to change the value and I do the search, I get an error.
This is the VO source:
<Variable
Name="UlssVar"
Kind="where"
Type="java.lang.String"
IsUpdateable="false">
<TransientExpression>adf.context.current.sessionScope.get('ulss')</TransientExpression>
</Variable>
Is it a ADF bug?
Thank in advance.

Hi,
try selecting the bind variable and open the Property Inspector, under UI Hints, set the "Display Hint" to hide. This should hide it (No bug for this reason)

• LOV query with bind variable

Hi,
I have a LOV with a query has a bind variable:
select comp_plan_id,name from cn_comp_plans_all
where sysdate between start_date and nvl(end_date,sysdate+1)
and org_id = : 1
So I create a CO for this LOV , and in processRequest(), I pass the value of this bind varible.
Now in the base page,
if comp plan crteria is blank, this LOV works fine.
if comp plan criteria has value: 2007 PTE COMP PLAN 1001
I get this error:

and org_id =:1) QRSLT WHERE (( UPPER(NAME) like :2 AND (NAME like :3 OR NAME like :4 OR NAME like :5 OR NAME like :6)))
Because '2007 PTE COMP PLAN 1001' has 5 tokens, the generated query automatically add 'Name' 5 times.
Can anyone help?

• Ora-01008 error with bind variable

Hi,
We have a test program which have one bind variable on a column which is varchar2(20), in the test program we've passed a 20 character string to the variable. The program returns error in one of the databases but all others are successful. We've checked the column is same in all of them.
Exception in thread "main" java.sql.SQLException: ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1
ORA-01008: not all variables bound
Could you please advise how to troubleshoot this issue?
Regards

We aren't going to be able to help you if you won't post the database code that is giving the error.
And now we need the Java code that is constructing the query that you are using.
Your error is saying there is a second variable that you are not providing a value for.
And you said
>
We have a test program which have one bind variable on a column which is varchar2(20), in the test program we've passed a 20 character string to the variable.
>
But you are using a string that is 23 characters long
"a3g34-b13fd-efaie-f83fk"How does 23 go into 20?

• ADF Groovy Expression with bind variable and ResourceBundle

Now I have ViewObject which have WHERE clause with bind variable.
This bind variable is for language. Within bind variable I can change Value Type to Expression and into Value: I put +(ResourceBundle.getBundle("model.ModelBundle")).getString("language")+.
Now if I run Oracle Business Component Browser (on AppModule) this works. In my ModelBundle.properties there is language=1 name-value pair. And with different locale I have different language number.
Now if I put that ViewObject on one JSF, this bind variable expression does not work any more. Error:
*oracle.jbo.JboException: JBO-29000: Unexpected exception caught: java.util.MissingResourceException, msg=Can't find bundle for base name model.ModelBundle, locale my_locale*
Any ideas?
10x

The most wierd thing is that, if I make ViewObjectImpl and insert this method
public String getLanguage() {
return (ResourceBundle.getBundle("model.ModelBundle")).getString("language");
and call it in Bind Variable Expression Value: viewObject.getLanguage()
IT WORKS!
But why with groovy expression it does not work?

• Using bind variables in the model view for master detail

Hi all,
I have a master-detail views setup on the following two queries.
In the first query below - I use two bind variables to collect the start and end date.
you have to add (and :startDate = :startDate and :endDate = :endDate) or you will get errors - bind not defined in sql
I then use the viewQueryCriteria to collect the data on a search panel - so far so good. (Make the bind variables required) along with the other criteria.
The bind variables are displayed in the search panel and the data is entered correctly.
The query executes and all is happy.
VIEWOBJECT1
SELECT DepositAccounts.COA_ID,
... ChartOfAccounts.ACCOUNT_CODE || ' ' || ChartOfAccounts.ACCOUNT_TITLE as description
FROM DEPOSIT_ACCOUNTS DepositAccounts, DEPOSIT_ACCOUNT_DETAILS DepositAccountDetails, CHART_OF_ACCOUNTS ChartOfAccounts
WHERE DepositAccounts.ID = DepositAccountDetails.DEP_ACC_ID
and ChartOfAccounts.id = DepositAccountDetails.COA_ID
and :startDate = :startDate and :endDate = :endDate
Now I add the summation of a value (AMOUNT) to the view object (java - create view impl) to the VOViewRowImpl
and everything works - the value is shown in the transient attribute formatted and looking nice.
VIEWOBJECT2
SELECT PostingBatchAccounts.AMOUNT,
FROM POSTING_BATCH_ACCOUNTS PostingBatchAccounts, POSTING_BATCHES PostingBatches
where PostingBatchAccounts.PB_ID = PostingBatches.ID
and PostingBatches.SOURCE_DATE between :startDate and :endDate
Now I need to add the start date and end date to the child query - before the view executes (or the summation is calculated).
The attributes are in the where clause (PostingBatches.SOURCE_DATE between :startDate and :endDate) in VIEWOBJECT2 which is the child.
I need the child records and the summation to work with the date restrictions.
I would assume you could get access to the child view in the VOViewImpl file and set the bind variables there.
Everything I find is based on the JSF - not the model layer - this should be fairly easy (and common). can anyone give me a hand on this?

• Bind Variables in SPARQL Queries

Hi,
I am interested in bind variables and their use between queries, however while I see the concept behind the example given in the documentation (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e25609/sem_jena.htm#autoId15) I am not able to grasp how to exactly pass the results of a query_1 for an ?x variable to another query query_2.
Would it be possible to offer a more detailed explanation and a working simple code about how to do this using Jena Adapater.
Thank you.

Hi,
I am using the Java API to run SPARQL update queries, this is an example of what I am trying to achieve :
public static void runTestUpdateBinding() throws SQLException {
String[] modelNames = new String[] { };
String[] rulebases = new String[] { };
OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
ods.setURL("ORACLE CONNECTION STRING");
OracleConnection oc = (OracleConnection)ods.getConnection();
Oracle oracle = new Oracle(oc);
Attachment attachment =
Attachment.createInstance(modelNames, rulebases, InferenceMaintenanceMode.NO_UPDATE, QueryOptions.ALLOW_QUERY_INVALID_AND_DUP);
GraphOracleSem graph = new GraphOracleSem(oracle, "in_oracle", attachment, true);
ModelOracleSem model = new ModelOracleSem(graph);
//Insert few triples
String updateQuery = "INSERT DATA {                                        " +
"  <http://sub/a>  <http://pred/a>  <http://obj/a> .\n" +
"  <http://sub/b>  <http://pred/b>  <http://obj/b> .\n" +
"  <http://sub/c>  <http://pred/c>  <http://obj/c>    " +
UpdateAction.parseExecute(updateQuery, model);
//Run the update query
updateQuery = "PREFIX    ORACLE_SEM_UEAP_NS:    <http://oracle.com/semtech#s$RDFVID%20IN(ORACLE_ORARDF_RES2VID(?),ORACLE_ORARDF_RES2VID(?))> \n" +
"PREFIX    ORACLE_SEM_UEPJ_NS:    <http://oracle.com/semtech#s$RDFVID> \n" +
"PREFIX    ORACLE_SEM_UEBV_NS:    <http://oracle.com/semtech#http%3A%2F%2Fsub%2Fa,http%3A%2F%2Fsub%2Fc> \n" +
"INSERT { <http://sub/UPDATED_SUBJECT>    ?p    ?o } \n" +
"WHERE  { ?s    ?p    ?o }";
UpdateAction.parseExecute(updateQuery, model);
model.close();
Basically, I am expecting only "<http://sub/a> <http://pred/a> <http://obj/a>" and "<http://sub/c> <http://pred/c> <http://obj/c>" to match, however, "<http://sub/b> <http://pred/b> <http://obj/b>" also matches as you can see from the following results
| s                            | p               | o              |
===================================================================
| <http://sub/c>               | <http://pred/c> | <http://obj/c> |
| <http://sub/UPDATED_SUBJECT> | <http://pred/c> | <http://obj/c> |
| <http://sub/b>               | <http://pred/b> | <http://obj/b> |
| <http://sub/UPDATED_SUBJECT> | <http://pred/b> | <http://obj/b> |
| <http://sub/a>               | <http://pred/a> | <http://obj/a> |
| <http://sub/UPDATED_SUBJECT> | <http://pred/a> | <http://obj/a> |
Also, in the underlying generated SQL, there is no restriction on s$RDFVID as in SELECT queries (i.e: ...where (s$RDFVID IN(ORACLE_ORARDF_RES2VID(?),ORACLE_ORARDF_RES2VID(?))) )

• Dynamic view object loses bind variables after passivation

I am creating a view object definition/view object programmatically in Jdev 11.1.1.2.0. The query requires a named bind parameter. All was working fine but now I am testing with app module pooling disabled and the bind variable is not being restored after passivation -- it's like the definition has disappeared or something.
Here is my VO creation code:
ViewObject vo = findViewObject("FinalistsWithEvalDataVO");
if (vo != null){
vo.remove();
ViewDefImpl voDef = new ViewDefImpl("FinalistsWithEvalDataVODef");
// I add a bunch of viewAttrs here...
voDef.setQuery(fullQuery);
voDef.setFullSql(true);
voDef.setBindingStyle(SQLBuilder.BINDING_STYLE_ORACLE_NAME);
voDef.resolveDefObject();
voDef.registerDefObject();
vo = createViewObject("FinalistsWithEvalDataVO", voDef);
vo.defineNamedWhereClauseParam("Bind_SchlrAyId", null, new int[] {0});
vo.setNamedWhereClauseParam("Bind_SchlrAyId", new Number(1)); //For testing
vo.executeQuery();
The query executes fine right there and then the VO seems to passivate fine. I even see the bind var in passivation:
<exArgs count="1">
<arg name="Bind_SchlrAyId" type="oracle.jbo.domain.Number">
1
</arg>
</exArgs>
But then when it reactivates prior to rendering the page, it invariably throws a missing parameter exception and this in the log:
<ViewUsageHelper><createViewAttributeDefImpls> [7409] *** createViewAttributeDefImpls: oracle.jdbc.driver.OraclePreparedStatementWrapper@1af78e1
<ViewUsageHelper><createViewAttributeDefImpls> [7410] Bind params for ViewObject: [FinalistsWithEvalDataVO]AwardViewingServiceAM.FinalistsWithEvalDataVO

<ViewUsageHelper><createViewAttributeDefImpls> [7412] java.sql.SQLException: Missing IN or OUT parameter at index:: 1
I have worked on this for hours and can't see anything wrong. Like I said, it works fine when not forcing passivation...
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
-Ed

@Jobinesh - Thanks for the suggestions. I have read all the documentation I can find. Everything works fine without passivation. Everything still breaks with passivation. I have given up on trying to get the bind variable to restore after passivation and am currently just building the query with all values embedded in the query rather than bind variables. This is bad practice but avoids the problem. However, now that I avoided that obstacle, I'm on to the next issue with passivation of this dynamic view object, which is that the current row primary key apparently cannot be reset after activation. I get the following error:
<Key><parseBytes> [7244] Key(String, AttributeDef[]): Invalid Key String found. AttributeCount:1 does not match Key attributes

• How to get value in data control at run time based on bind variable in VO

Hi,
we are capturing the value of customer id at run time. we are associating the captured value of customer id to bind variable of the view object.
View object is returning the data of that customer id, this view object is part of the application module ,this application module is exposed as data control,so than we have drag and drop this view object response on the
page from data control.
How ever after assigning the customer id to bind variable but still it is not showing on jsf page,even we refreshed the data control manually with the help of java code so kindly provide some solution for it.

Hi,
If i got your post correctly,you can filter your VO using defining view criteria see following samples

• Getting error 025036 while setting bind variable value

Hi,
I have created a view object (ViewObj) having bind variable (Bind_Val).
I am writing custom java method in AppModuleImpl.java, so that I can use that in serviceInterface.
my method is:
public void Met(String a){
ViewObjImpl vo=new ViewObjImpl();
vo.setBind_Val(a);
I tried the below method also:
public void Met(String a){
ViewObjectImpl vo=new ViewObjectImpl();
vo.setNamedWhereClauseParam("Bind_Val",a)
But when I am running the AppModuleServiceImpl.java and select the Met method and pass the value for a. It is giving me error 02036.
How to set the bind variable value in AppModuleImpl.java??
Thanks,
Rohit

Hi Frank,
Thanks for reply. It was helpful.
Please go through the below mentioned two queries.
My sql query is:
SELECT Message.MESSAGE_ID,
MessageProp.VALUE,
MessageProp.MSG_PROP_ID
FROM MESSAGE Message, MESSAGE_PROP MessageProp
WHERE (MessageProp.Key='From' OR MessageProp.Key='To')AND Message.MESSAGE_ID = MessageProp.MESSAGE_ID And MessageProp.Value='B'
and I have created one view criteria where I am giving the condition as MessageId=:Bind_MessageId.
And then I am executing my findViewCriteria method from AppModuleServiceImpl where I am passing the value for Bind_MessageId and I am getting the output as I want.
Now I am modifying my query as:
SELECT Message.MESSAGE_ID,
MessageProp.VALUE,
MessageProp.MSG_PROP_ID
FROM MESSAGE Message, MESSAGE_PROP MessageProp
WHERE (MessageProp.Key='From' OR MessageProp.Key='To')AND Message.MESSAGE_ID = MessageProp.MESSAGE_ID And MessageProp.Value=:Bind_Value
and setting the value for :Bind_Value programatically as:
public void test(String s){
ViewObjectImpl view = this.getViewObj1();
VariableValueManager vm = view.ensureVariableManager();
vm.setVariableValue("Bind_Value",s);
**Note- I have written this custom method in AppModuleImpl.java class
Then firstly I am executing test method from AppModuleServiceImpl to set the value for :Bind_Value. After that I am executing findViewCriteria method but then I am not getting any record.
**Note-I am not getting any error.
I want to set Bind_Value programatically and then I want to execute my FindViewCriteria from serviceInterface.
Thanks,
Rohit

• Bind Variable : required - no message, not required - error

hi
Please consider the example application created using JDeveloper 11.1.1.6.0
at http://www.consideringred.com/files/oracle/2012/RequiredOrNotBVarApp-v0.01.zip
It has these View Objects defined
- EmployeesReqNoValueBVarVO which has a required Bind Variable, and where clause "last_name like '%' || :LastNameBVar || '%'"
- EmployeesNotReqNoValueBVarVO which has a NOT required Bind Variable, and where clause "(:LastNameBVar is null or last_name like '%' || :LastNameBVar || '%')"
The Bind Variable in both View Objects does NOT have a value (no default value, not programmatically set, not entered by the user, ...).
This "no value set" aspect could be the result of a "development error", but the resulting observed behaviour is at least "peculiar".
- scenario (sc1) : run "try tryEmployeesReqNoValueBVarVO", see a table filled with rows and NO message about the required Bind Variable
- scenario (sc2) : run "try tryEmployeesNotReqNoValueBVarVO", see "No data to display." in the table and the "Missing IN or OUT parameter at index:: 1" error for the NOT required Bind Variable for a where clause that can deal with null values
- question (q1) How can be explained that scenario (sc1) does not result in an error message about the required Bind Variable (and scenario (sc2) does result in an error message about the NOT required Bind Variable)?
- question (q2) What does the "Required" checkbox for a Bind Variable really mean for Bind Variables used in a where clause of a View Object?
If the described behaviour can be reproduced (using RequiredOrNotBVarApp-v0.01.zip), confirmations are welcome.
(Aspects of these scenario's could be related to forum thread "Bind variable required/not required: strange behaviour".)
many thanks
Jan Vervecken

Thanks for your reply Frank.
Frank Nimphius wrote:
... your query actually is dependent on the existence of the bind variable because the bind variable is used in the where clause part. ...Sure, and the Bind Variable does exist (in both (sc1) and (sc2)).
... This has nothing to do with whether the bind variable value is checked for NULL and if the value it contains is NULL performs an "all you can eat" type of query. Because the existing, NOT required Bind Variable has not been given a value in scenario (sc2), the check for NULL only makes more explicit that NULL is a valid value for the SQL statement.
... Non required bind variables are used in the context of view criteria to avoid missing IN or OUT parameters. ...The "Required" checkbox for a Bind Variable is also available/enabled when the Bind Variable is not used in a View Criteria (in both (sc1) and (sc2)).
... In the case of a view criteria, the VO query may be executed without the view criteria applied and for this reason should not fail only because the defined bind variable is not provided. ...No View Criteria in the scenario's (sc1) and (sc2) I descirbe.
... If you run the query in the tester, you get
(java.sql.SQLException) Missing IN or OUT parameter at index:: 1
and no query is executed at all for EmployeesNotReqNoValueBVarVOSure, that matches scenario (sc2), but the Bind Variable can be configured as NOT required, how can it be missing?
The JDeveloper help page "Create or Edit Bind Variables Dialog - Variable Page" says:
"... Alternatively, you can use the SQL Statement page of the Edit View Objects dialog to enter a parameterized WHERE clause. Note that the bind variables you enter in a parameterized SQL WHERE clause will require a valid value at runtime or a runtime exception error will be thrown. ..."
So, null as a valid value, seems to explain the behaviour in scenario (sc1).
"... In contrast, when you create a view criteria filter condition that references a named bind variable, you can specify whether the value is required or optional. ..."
But, the "Required" checkbox is also available (to uncheck) for Bind Variables that are not used in a View Criteria.
Specifically for the "Required" checkbox the help page says : "... Select if you want to make the value of a name bind variable required for any usage the references the named bind variable. For example, when the value is required (default), all view criteria items that reference the named bind variable will fail to execute unless a valid value is supplied at runtime. Alternatively, you can leave the value not required and use the Create View Criteria dialog to specify whether or not individual view criteria items require the value. ..."
Again, the focus is on View Criteria, although it can also be unchecked (configuring as NOT Required) for Bind Variables that are not used in a View Criteria (which does not seem to be something you should do).
But, still, there is a perspective here that makes this possibly very confusing:
- a View Object where clause with a required Bind Variable, no value set --> results in rows, and NO message about a missing value
- a View Object where clause with a NOT required Bind Variable, no value set --> results in no rows, and a message about a missing value
regards
Jan
